First pass at a mass Gardening migration list is up (pinging @waxeagle):
0
A: What questions should we migrate to Gardening

BMitchA few things we should do: Clean up any dups on DIY. Check for dups on Gardening. Decide if drainage, french drains, and other runoff questions belong on DIY or Gardening. Decide if ponds belong on DIY or Gardening. I've reviewed the following tags: chainsaw drainage excavator french-drain ga...

I think the next step is to start making a reject list, I'll move those questions down to the bottom of the post and cross them out (just in case we want to change our mind)
@BMitch Wow!
@BMitch looks like a pretty good list, I don't have time to go through it all right now, but I'll put something up on our meta tomorrow.
Thanks, I'm exhausted, time to call it a night
:)
I looked through the tags Sunday; I had , and as well.
@NiallC. Feel free to add them in. I sorted the questions by the post id so it's easy to catch yourself adding a dup.
03:08
Sorry for not helping more, but I've been researching closet shelving systems...
03:20
Added a few more migration possibilities.
There might be some stuff in and as well. I'll take a look after I get back from walking up and down HD's shelving aisle

@Tester101 i dont understand what you mean :(
@lsiunsuex I don't understand what you're talking about ;P
"I like when @lsiunsuex leaves, it reminds me of gravity."
Look at your gravitar, then watch what happens when somebody leaves chat. Then you'll understand.
ahh
thats kinda funny

STOP HANGING S**T FROM FRIGGIN' DRYWALL!
2
Q: Should I be worried if I missed the studs while mounting my TV?

Annie SI think I missed the studs based on how easily the drill moved through the drywall. My LCD only weighs 27lbs and the mount itself is 5lbs (rated to hold 165lbs, and uses 4 8mm lag bolts). I pulled as hard as I could downward on the tv and nothing moved at all, everything seems pretty sturdy. Sho...

DIY should really give away an annual darwin award
Public Service Announcement: Just because you had the opportunity to hang your Christmas decorations, does not mean you have to turn them on.
Yes it does
Christmas lights can not be turned on until after you've eaten your turkey.
I ate turkey in 1973 - any lights I turn on are after I ate turkey
so there
13:16
The whole point of Thanksgiving day, is to mark the beginning of the holiday season.
That's a subjective interpretation
We're all giving thanks, that we haven't had to think about Christmas yet.
Live like every day is a holiday! ;)
If we lived like every day was arbor day, lumber would be cheaper.
can everyday be a newegg.com sale?
13:22
@Tester101 You have no respect for Halloween? What kind of person are you?
Halloween is the official beginning of the holiday season, and anyone that says otherwise missed out on a key part of childhood.
The Fourth of July comes before Halloween - I think it starts the Holiday season. Anyone who disagrees is a Communist
That's a different holiday season
arstechnica.com/business/2012/11/… now when someone calls for help why their internet is so slow, you can honestly say, its your magnetic hard drive thats the bottle neck
Halloween is when the people who I've been giving money to all year, actually come to my house and ask for a handout.
@BMitch It's all one holiday season, Commie
13:29
But I guess at least they got up and did something, for a change.
NSFW, Jonathan Coulton, First of May which kicks off the summer holiday season:
Things I've learned in the last 24 hours (yes I'm changing the subject)
Clean your effing grout lines out before the thinset hardens
we spent 3 hours last night cleaning them up cause we let them solidify
Drywall anchor may be rated for 79 pounds but not if the drywall itself crumbles.
sigh
@TheEvilGreebo we did that in the kitchen :( let it harden - the grout in the granite tiles we used is black and it dried white
I'm not sure I understand drywall anchor ratings. Is that how much they can hold in drywall, or when the machine used to test their strength rips them apart?
@Tester101 dunno
13:43
probably the strength of the bolt
i think it would be nieve for the anchor company to assume the strength of the drywall
Indeed. 1/4" drywall is going to be loads weaker than 5/8"
also distance from the closet screw - i'd think the rip out force of the bolt in the drywall would be greater if close by a stud near a drywall screw then if it were in the field between 2 screws in 16 inch on center studs - to many variables
then again, the wife was adjusting drapes on a rod hung with the shitty plastic push in anchors, lost her balance, fell, grabbing on to the curtain rod and ripped it right out of the wall, scoring an awesome bruise on her thigh
@lsiunsuex I don't see that mattering much. Damaged gypsum is damaged gypsum
14:01
I like @BMitch's answer. "Your TV is being supported by two pieces of paper. That should be all you need to know."
3
@Tester101 If I don't have a picture, a crazy mental image is the next best thing. :)
Don't take that out of context.
0
Q: What type of wall construction is shown in these pictures?

flamingpenguinThese photos were taken through a small hole in the wall of a house. They are of the inside of the cavity. The hole they were taken through is at a height of about 60cm from the internal ground floor level. The left of the photos is the inside of the outer leaf of the external wall of the house. ...

I'm thinking poured concrete with steel bolts inserted that the wall in question is attached to
@BMitch I get it. This is what the TV is hanging from.
@Tester101 slightly thicker paper - like... cardstock
kinda
@TheEvilGreebo In any case, these are what the TV should be hanging from.
14:08
@Tester101 so hes doing it right then! the white gaps in between all that brown shit
well good cause I sure hope you didn't try to hang the TV from one of these:
@lsiunsuex What white gaps? I only see studs.
@TheEvilGreebo Criss Angel?
I dunno who that is, just a generic "stud" picture from google
wtf. i thought my facebook profile was private. how'd you score my picture?
@lsiunsuex My google-fu is strong
Your google-fu is weak.
14:13
@TheEvilGreebo Your search habits are questionable. When I do a google image search for "stud", there are no pictures of guys anywhere in the results. In fact, this is the first image in the list...
@Tester101 You're* google-fu is worse.
*yes i did that on purpose
That image is from a forum thread, talking about Subaru extended wheel studs.
14:43
Anyone feel like getting a VTC in on this before I wack it as a legal question?

already done bmitch
Sooooo 8 seconds ago
:)
I'M JUST THAT FAST, SLOWPOKE!!!
Dang. I was excited about being able to quote from article 625 of the NEC.
I bet you were, too bad the Q wasn't about DIY.
14:47
talk about jumping on the bandwagon - the tesla was just announced as car of the year yesterday. buying one already ?
Two rules with electric cars.
1.) Always lease an electric vehicle.
2.) Never buy a used electric vehicle, unless the battery has been replaced. See also 1..
meh - 3 year (of 5) into my prius - was 1 year old when i bought it - 78k miles right now - no problems so far (knocks on wood)
reminds me to google if a prius will still drive with dead batteries
"Like all batteries, the amount of energy that the high-voltage “propulsion” battery can store will decrease with time and miles driven. Depending on use, the battery may degrade as little as 10 percent to as much as 30 percent of capacity over the warranty period." Chevy warranty information.
Warranty is 8 year 100,000 mile.
15:04
we have a prius and a highlander hybrid
my highlander's inverter converter went bad a few yrs ago - still under warranty
if it hadn't been under warranty (and it isn't anymore) -the PART alone cost 8 grand
15:18
@TheEvilGreebo do you live in a cold climate or warm ?
@lsiunsuex Yes
Temperate - it gets cold - it gets warm
sometimes in the morning in the winter, i go to turn on the prius and its like it doesn't fully turn on - then i have to hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it off - 2nd time, starts just fine - random - could be cold and happens, could be cold and starts just fine
Or you're just not engaging the button fully. That happens w/ my Highlander if I don't turn the key fully for about a second
hard to describe it - its like all the instrument panels are dimmed and the cooling pump doesn't turn on
I chalk it up to user error
15:20
hmm
probably
PEBCAS
(problem exists between car and seat)
You're pushing it wrong :)
2
Of course, if there's a wrong way to push it, I chalk the problem up to bad design.
Why do we have button starts anyway? What's wrong with turning a key?
@TheEvilGreebo you dont happen to have a car starter on either of the 2 hybrids do u ?
@ChrisCudmore because lock cylinders can break / sieze / require taking your keys out of your pocket?
What's the difference between these questions:
8
Q: What are the implications of driving a drywall screw too far into the sheet?

oscilatingcretinI'm not gonna lie. The early stages of my very first home improvement project completely smacks of novice DIY'er. I did so many things wrong that I've since learned from, but the first mistakes are still glaringly obvious, one of which being how I drove screws too far into drywall. Some do mor...

@lsiunsuex you mean a remote starter?
15:24
0
Q: Are the drywallers I hired countersinking ceiling drywall too deep at 1/8"?

oscilatingcretinMy past experiences have shown me not to countersink the screw too deep, just enough to create a dimple. The drywallers I hired to do my ceilings are driving the screws in at around 1/8". I posted a question here a few weeks back asking about the implications of driving screws too deep. Perhap...

an actual engine starter
remotely
(not just unlock / lock but start)
no we don't have remote car starters. I'm not sure they exist yet for hybrids - since hybrids start differently
@lsiunsuex Really? How often does that happen.
@lsiunsuex buttons aren't exactly fool proof either
i mean i can "start" my highlander and the gas engine stays off
15:25
@TheEvilGreebo damned keyboard
also if your keys are in your pocket (or purse) you'll be less prone to locking them in the car
@waxeagle sure, it's the tools fault
;)
@lsiunsuex people lock their cars?
And if I take my keys out of my pocket, then I know where they are. I heard a story about a guy who got stranded when he started the car, and the car started because the keys were in his wife's purse. Then he dropped her off.
@ChrisCudmore lol nice
15:27
In the Mini, I have stick the key-fob in the dash for it to start. I don't see any real advantage to that.
But at least you can't leave them behind.
I don't lock my car. It's cheaper to replace my CDs than it is to replace a window.
wtf is a CD ? :)
@lsiunsuex damned if I know
My car is a 2006. And I'm not wasting time to rip hundreds of discs.
@ChrisCudmore I drive a 99 civic, still has a (non-working) tape deck.
I don't have any tapes left. I've still got some vinyl, but no tapes.
15:33
@ChrisCudmore I don't think I do either. if anything I'd use a tape adapter to go to my phone
I had one of those. I'd plug my sony discman into the tape deck.
10:30. Time for me to go to church.
@ChrisCudmore I don't even bother with the tape adaptor in the civic though, I just use the speaker on my phone
St. Timothy of Horton.
@ChrisCudmore lol, enjoy your coffee...say hi to Dave
Dave from Canada? I think he's on vacation this week.
15:37
@ChrisCudmore naw, Dave Thomas the Wendy's guy...(Wendy's owns TH)
He's dead. And I think Wendy's sold it off.
goto tim hortons every morning. next building over
I'm not a huge fan, but it's close to work.
I prefer a chain called "The Second Cup" but there isn't one nearby.
i prefer starbucks - much fuller flavor
It's similar to Starbucks, but they know when to turn the roaster off.
Starbucks has one roast - Dark.
Which kills the subtleties in a coffee.
15:51
pikes peak isn't to strong
and we had the thanksgiving blend last week - wasen't to strong either
do you use sugar / cream or no ?
i went black a few years ago and never went back
Milk and sugar.
I used to use cream, but I cut that out. It's unnecessary fat.
i was using just an unhealthy amount of sugar and cream - thought my teeth were gonna fall out (or i'd get diabetes) so i cut both out cold turkey
even a a little milk / cream tastes like crap now
@lsiunsuex I just switched to black a few months ago, and I really prefer it now
@waxeagle biggest downside of drinking black coffee - now the quality of coffee is actually important. theres nothing to hide a shitty coffee when you drink it black
got a french press and only drank blacked pressed coffee for a few weeks. that was all I needed to accustom my taste buds to it
@lsiunsuex very very true. Need to get me some good stuff again. I've been out and drinking the office stuff
15:58
this weekend i think, i'm gonna boil water in a kettle - put a paper filter in a funnel and try to make it that way
the kurig at home is garbage and i returned my technivorm cause i was getting chest pains from drinking to much
I found the 12oz french press to be just right. need to get a burr grinder so I can get it more consistent.
never heard anything bad about french presses - just haven't gotten around to trying one
@BMitch One is about messing up your own drywall installation, the other's about paying someone to mess it up.
I love my french press. I also have a burr grinder. But it's messy.
@ChrisCudmore definitely a mess. Worth it for an awesome cup of coffee
16:01
I usually use it on the weekend. I'll use the preground during the weekday morning rush.
Can't wait until the kids can make their own damn lunches.
Anna dresses them while I make lunch and coffee.
@ChrisCudmore lol yeah. I don't have to pack lunch, but getting a 4yr old wrangled clothed and out the door is a lot of work. I grind and press at work :)
plus an infant fed and carseated
Thank god I'm past the infant/toddler stage.
I miss the cute, but life is a lot easier now.
@ChrisCudmore yeah. I was just getting used to being past that, when bam, nother baby
@waxeagle Damn babies just popping out of nowhere. Wish there was a way to prevent that from happening.
@Tester101 if only :)
16:11
Here's the story about my nephew. He's getting really cute.
Damnit google! Thanks for the 3D view of Furby, but I want to look at the bottom too. google.com/shopping/product/…
@ChrisCudmore he looks good :). I can't imagine the tenseness of having a kiddo in the hospital for that long, we did 5 days in the NICU with our first and it was agonizing, I wouldn't want to do longer. Glad to hear that he's just on Oxygen now. Premie care has come a long way.
It was pretty tense for a while there. He came out at 25 wks, Just as my brother was loading the car to come visit for Christmas.
I went up to Ottawa twice that winter, once just to take care of them, and once to do a whole whack of necessary house repairs. 6 trips to Home Depot in one weekend.
We had to install a dedicated circuit for the Oxygen concentrator.
He should be off the O2 during the day tommorrow, after the appointment with the respirologist.
But on nighttime o2 until spring.
Apparently, it takes 2 years for a premie to catch up.
The news staff at CTV Ottawa bought them a parking pass for the hospital. Most thoughtful gift ever.
16:31
@ChrisCudmore that's awesome
@ChrisCudmore srsly
any signs of developmental delays? or is he developing normally?
Yeah, he's doing well. Came down for Canadian Thanksgiving. He looked fine. He's developmentally where he should be based on his due date. But he's three months behind if you go by his actual birth date.
Which is to be expected. Lungs were the big issue.
And they were lucky. My Sister in law did a great job doing what mammals are known for. They had to buy an extra freezer to store it all.
And high fat too.
16:53
6 days from fanatic

1 hour later…
17:58
just ran some numbers
it costs us $3.76 every morning for a large and a medium coffee
we alternate who buys - so its $1015 / year
or $507 each
i spend over $500 in tim hortons coffee, every year, for the last 4 years
@lsiunsuex It's often better to not think about such things.
@ChrisCudmore there are people that will rip your CD library to MP3 for you at surprisingly cheap prices
@Tester101 also, its often good not to tell the wife that figure
@Aaron That's because they already downloaded all the music you'll likely have from the pirate bay, so they don't actually have to do anything other than send you the files.
@lsiunsuex If it were Starbucks instead of Tim Hortons, you'd add a decimal point.
18:03
@TheEvilGreebo yeah no shit
@lsiunsuex Just don't tell her how much you spend on porn each month, and you'll be OK.
I don't drink coffee, and we have a grinder/maker at home, so I just dump the beans in for the wife every week
i quit drinking coffee last year - took 2 days to get over the withdrawl - all day headaches - after 2 days i was fine - felt better, blah blah blah - then you realize how shitty gatorade tastes and how expensive that is - and i never cared for the taste of water so i digressed
@Aaron Same - we were looking at Keurig - $0.50/cup - and I did the math vs. $14/lb gourmet coffee - and after I showed my wife how our "expensive" coffee was $0.08/cup she stopped worrying about that extra $1.00/lb ;)
@TheEvilGreebo thats cause you have to get the keurig adaptor that you can put your own coffee grounds into - then its not so much
18:06
@lsiunsuex Did you figure in the productivity lose without the coffee?
$10 or 20 for the adaptor - then you can put in whatever you want
@lsiunsuex Yeah, except making 1 cup at a time is also woefully inefficient in my world.
The standard cup of coffee is 6 oz. My standard coffee cup is 12 oz ;)
works for us cause the wife doesn't drink coffee, so its just me
@lsiunsuex Not relevant - its not who drinks it, it's how much is drunk in a session :)
If I don't get my 2/3'ds of a pot per day I'm just NASTY to people
If you like flavored stuff, but are concerned about the calories/sugars, Costco has vitamin water knock-off, zero calorie, in 24 bottle packs
18:09
@TheEvilGreebo I just press the button twice. You can make 2 cups from a single k-cup (as long as it all goes in the same cup).
@Tester101 EW NASTY
NEVER NEVER overuse grounds
once you hit a certain amount of water flow over the grounds you start extracting the bitters
bad bad bad
@TheEvilGreebo Sorry, didn't realize you were a coffee connoisseur.
@Tester101 I am, and you, Sir, are a horrible cretin who is destroying wonderful wonderful coffee, and you should be tarred, feathered, and run out on a rail, you cretin!
For shame, Sir! FOR SHAME!!!
(lets see how else can I push this outrage over the top?...)
@NiallC. thanks for the flag, you just gave me a dozen user accounts to merge :)
Should this be two questions?
1
Q: How do I remove a flush mounted ceiling light fixture dome?

Katey HWMy bedroom has a very nice looking flush mounted ceiling light with a glass dome. However, all the bulbs have gone out and I cannot get the glass out to replace them. I'm 5'4" and standing on the bottom corner of my bed I can reach up with my arms fully extended and handle the glass, but I can't ...

Q1.) How can I reach the fixture?
Q2.) How do I change the bulbs?
18:16
@BMitch You're welcome. I didn't realize it was that bad, I only spotted three.
@NiallC. Yup, I was happy when I found they have a mod tool to search for some commonalities, they've had 25 questions over the year: diy.stackexchange.com/users/6141/liantics
Y'all are talking about stuff I can't see, right?
@TheEvilGreebo mod tools, yes, user that makes multiple accounts, no
right
ok then :)
@BMitch Hah, I left a comment on one of their older answers about registering & not creating duplicate accounts... so you'll probably have to keep doing this. :)
18:23
can't decide if this is a redundant tag
@Tester101 levitation. magic. answer: hire a wizard.
@TheEvilGreebo What would you replace it with?
Psychokinesis
@NiallC. hardwood-refinishing maybe
but then that sounds more like floors
@NiallC. I wish SE would autoflag when they found similar user accounts, gotta figure out how I can write that feature request without talking about stuff that cannot be talked about. :)
18:26
@BMitch How would it do that? multiple users can use the same PC.
What if they are accessing from a public library?
@Tester101 or same IP anyway - my wife and I are behind a firewall, we share the same public facing IP
@TheEvilGreebo There's or as well
not that she posts here but...
@Tester101 Well, a flag is just a hint for a mod to review, not an automatic merging process. And there are other ways, but I'm not supposed to talk about it. Anyway, I've got to make some more fliers for our local fight club. :)
Wood finishing refers to the process of refining or protecting a wooden surface, especially in the production of furniture.
18:31
@BMitch DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB
@TheEvilGreebo Why isn't there a rule telling me that?
oh, yeah, nevermind.
@BMitch I can't talk about it
oh well no biggie
I would just change to
but I guess could refer to the actual top coat used, where as would refer more to the process of applying said finish.
18:37
Same distinction as for and
There's also but no , , etc.
Is the goal of tags to have more tags, or fewer tags?
@Tester101 the goal is to have useful tags.
2
Snark aside. A perfect tagging system would be intuitive, and it would give me nothing but relevant results, and all relevant results.
Dear Evil Greebo - can you use <a feature that's been implemented for weeks> to accomplish <some goal>?
18:51
"less tags" but you fixed it.
Dear Idiot User - Why yes, in fact it's been there for weeks.
is it rude of me to describe my edit as "conversion to English" ?
Wait... I don't care.
No thats fine.
It would be rude if it said "Conversion from moron to English"
19:50
You guys are slacking, no VTC's on this yet?

Q: What is the name of this type of stand?

fighaMy headphones' mic stand is flexible like this: You can bend it anyway you like and it (sort of) keeps its shape. What is it called? Also, where can I get something like that of a larger size, or, how can I make one?

thanks for the -1, I see this is a very nice, open and welcoming community! — figha 39 mins ago
DUH!
there, happy now? 1vtc
We could also help this guy get the peer pressure badge, one more -1 and he can delete it himself :)
@TheEvilGreebo yes, much happier, I hate taking unilateral action.
i just gave it a -1 whats that do?
@lsiunsuex It kills a kitten.
19:56
YES!!!!!!!
I think it also killed my lawn, but that's another story
the kitten or the question ?
@BMitch I told you, my cat was never ON your lawn!!!
@lsiunsuex YES!!!! :)
"Welcome to the site. Your question has nothing to do with Home Improvement, so I'm going to down vote it. I've commented as well, so you can direct your argumentative comments as to why you think this is on topic at somebody specific.".
@da01 ;)
@DA01 You can call it a community if you want but I'm still not sitting around the camp fire with you holding hands and singing Kum Bye Ya! — The Evil Greebo 13 secs ago
@lsiunsuex * you're
2
@lsiunsuex How did you do that! ;)
@lsiunsuex And yes, you're
google chrome - view menu - developer tools - resources - get down to the element and double click on the words - you edit right there on the spot
THINK firefox does it also
20:06
slick :)
@lsiunsuex I know firebug could do it, but I've hit stability issues in the past and do all my dev in Chrome now
@lsiunsuex also, Elmo is kind of a dick...
@BMitch the native dev tools should let you do that now. I'm still a firebug guy
just playing with firebug ;)
i am disappointed that I never thought of that m'self - now its a new trick for me to abuse! ;D
During election season, I went on a political website and tried to pledge -10,000 hours to the campaign (that's what happens when you call me during dinner). Sadly, I'm guessing I wasn't the first one to modify their web form's drop-down options and it was rejected by the server.
Well can't speak for that site but asp.net sites will reject any post back that has controls that don't match the viewstate
20:14
I should have tried registering my child's name, little bobby tables, next
@BMitch :)
@lsiunsuex That little trick just came in very handy at work. Thanks!
@TheEvilGreebo Putting the "Evil" in the Greebo again, 'eh?
20:30
@Tester101 told you i'd dominate the visible star wall !
@lsiunsuex nice
