Ugh. I think I screwed something up here: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/164717/… I noticed I confused some terms in the answer so I went back to fix it, but I'm reading the question again and there are a couple of things they're saying that just don't make sense.

2:27 AM
I... think I can make it make sense as part of the answer.

Q: Can a horse really travel this far per day?

Jeffrey WittySpecial Travel Pace (DMG p. 242–243): In 1 hour, you can move a number of miles equal to your speed divided by 10 [...] For a fast pace, increase the rate of travel by one-third. For a slow pace, multiply the rate by two-thirds. Variant encumbrance (pn PHB pg 176) says up to str ×

Q: Can a Battle Smith artificer change the appearance of a Steel Defender after creating it?

Robert Pain VanZantI'm playing a Battle Smith artificer currently, and my DM is a very by-the-books kind of guy. When the question came up of whether or not I could change its appearance, he just said "if it's in the book." From the entry for the Steel Defender, it just says that you determine its appearance and w...

@KorvinStarmast pinged you there :)

@DavidCoffron "Chimeric" just makes me think of the game Nova Drift (...now on GOG! :P). The developer is Chimeric Games. (I'm a mod on their Discord and subreddit, and as of last month I'm contracted as a localization manager for them.)

@V2Blast Grats!!!
@NeutralTax Well, if I don't have a flame thrower, no, that's seriously scary.

6:50 AM
@NeutralTax I only had to look up the word "Kaninchen" (which apparently means "rabbit"). Guess taking German all through middle and high school was useful for something... Though I have difficulty seeing the image as a rabbit given the perspective and the total lack of facial features (if it were a rabbit).
@KorvinStarmast Thanks! :)
It's $10.49 (30% off) for Nova Drift on GOG, or $14.16 (37% off) for game + soundtrack: gog.com/game/nova_drift

Although the "nova means doesn't go" urban legend about the Chevrolet car is exactly that--an urban legend (no va and nova are distinct words)--I'm still terribly amused by the idea of "Doesn't Go Drift."

Hah, I hadn't even heard that one

hm
I swear I've read this somewhere but having difficulty tracking down a statement
I'm almost certain I've seen text re: D&D 5e which states you're not intended to apply weird D&D math rules to real-world values like weight and distance
but it's possible I'm remembering something in the context of previous editions
does anyone have any clue what I'm on about

11:00 AM
@Carcer 5e does have an infobox saying the encumberance rules are unrealistic for the sake of enjoyability and simplicity, in the PHB
Variant: Encumbrance

@kviiri I know the one but it's not what I mean
I'm starting to think I am probably remembering something 3/3.5e-era about stacking multipliers

Yeah, I'm not sure what you're thinking of

ah well

Q: How does the War Caster feat interact with +1 weapons or shields?

OfficerDustSay I take the War Caster feat, which allows me to use my weapon or shield as a spellcasting focus. If my weapon or shield is a +1, then when I use it was a spellcasting focus, would it act as a +1 wand or rod focus?

@Zachiel How are you doing?

@Carcer There's a laser-pure statement to that effect in the Fate rules, which is probably not what you're looking for: "So how much can a character with Great (+4) Physique bench press? How much can a character with Fair (+2) Resources spend before going broke? The truth is, it is unknown and the Fate system is reluctant to pursue a specific answer."

Could a GOO warlock choose Baby Yoda as their patron? Discuss.

@Powerdork Mostly fine, thank you. How are you? It's been a long time!

Out of sorts since Giant in the Playground forum's down. I was getting into a play-by-post game shortly before that.

@Carcer If there's something about it, I'd guess it should be in the same place 3.5e had it, but I can't remember where it is and my PHB is behind some miscellaneous items I don't want to move around now.
but I had a question about multipliers here where it shows that only rolls get the treatment
@Powerdork I have seen that GitP is down, yes. Now I'm sad for your game, look at what you did! (XD)

So I'm a bit confused by this comment, is that really a reason to "downvote"? It strikes me as incorrect that the downvote would be removed if the answer were copy-pasted into a new answer

Well, that person feels it is.

I don't think I'd agree, but everyone's allowed to make their own choices there.

Yeah that's fair. I guess it just struck me as particularly unusual, I'll remove my comment

Q: For the Conjure Animals spells, are the summoned fey spirits 'smart' enough to take a form that fits the summoning locale?

Radioactive_LegoCurrently I'm running Conjure Animals fairly restrictively. The player says they are casting the spell and designates the locations that they will appear (I then label them, as they are designated). I roll which animals take form from a table that was designed to fit the overall campaign. Ho...

From a bit of searching, I've found that the current site logo is by Jin:

A: What does this site's logo mean?

SevenSidedDieThe designer, Jin, explained a bit about it in the original post about it, Design for RPG.se: I'm also subtly using dice as recurring visual elements throughout the site, as seen as the logo, accepted answer background and voting arrows. The hexagon divided into triangles invokes the shape ...

Q: Design for RPG.se

JinThank you for your helpful suggestions in the design brainstorming post. I am very excited to present to the community the design I've been working on. The overall look and feel I'm going after is a warm and welcoming theme that reflects tabletop RPG gaming. It should capture the visual element...

I mention this because I just noticed someone using that exact design as the logo of their subreddit and Discord.
Can/should anything be done about this?
on a totally unrelated note (...well, tangentially related in that I saw it advertised in the same place as the aforementioned subreddit/Discord):

@V2Blast Is it the exact design? They're both d20s with a rust color, but SE does not own the d20 design. Plenty of other TTRPG sites use similar icons.

Well, really, the circle is what makes it seem copied from us specifically.
The circle image (pasted directly into chat above) is in the first link by SSD above

Do we have a circle around ours?

yeah, I'm unsure on that
it looks like the image in SSD's post has it?
but I don't see it elsewhere in the current design
anyway
not really angry that they copied us (without asking), more just an observation

Kickstarter: Ancestry and Culture: An Alternative to Race in 5e by Eugene Marshall is a 32-page set of alternate PC creation rules for D&D 5e that replace Race with Ancestry, Culture, and Mixed Heritage.

anyone know anything about Eugene Marshall or his previous work? He's apparently the author of the PhilosopherGM blog, and he and his wife recently founded the publishing company Arcanist Press. Seems intriguing.
Pledging $5 gets you the PDF, and $8 gets you the PDF and a Print-on-Demand coupon for the product on DriveThruRPG (though shipping and a small print fee is separate). $40 gets you all that plus a custom Ancestry and Culture by the designer; pledging $100 gets you a custom one-shot by the designer on Roll20 for you and up to 5 other friends.

First smell test for anybody these days is, check their Twitter likes and replies.

Q: What is the mechanic of "Keen sense of smell and hearing?"

Victor BThough personally, I thought it would be awesome to play a Lythari (P.106 of SCAG) shadow monk who relies on her smell to scout ahead, I realized that this isn't the only time that a player character might be faced with "Keen Hearing and Smell", as they might: Be a druid who wildshapes as a can...

Q: Eldritch knight dual wield: do I get multiple attacks on my bonus action?

OldenborgI have a level 11 Eldritch Knight with two weapon fighting. The rules say I have 3 attacks per action. The rules say when ever I make an attack action with my main hand I can make a bonus attack action with my offhand. Does that mean I get 3 attacks on my off hand as well?

11:59 PM
@V2Blast conceptually, sounds neat. The conflation of genetics and culture by D&D always bugged me.
