@nitsua60 It was I think some changes are "[doge meme]" = "much wow" (as in I didn't realize it was necesary), some changes are good (:thumbsup:) and some changes are great ("Kreygasm" is a twitch emote that conveys that)

@NautArch I may be missing the point you are making but it seems he doesn't really need to explain "spellcasters" when it already fails the "with slots" right?

Q: What is a "spellcaster" for the purpose of magic item attunement?

sadaqahSeveral wands and other magic items in the DMG cite "spellcaster" as an attunement requirement, specifically "requires attunement by a spellcaster" while others list multiple spellcasting classes (e.g., a Staff of Fire "requires attunement by a druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard" p. 201). Howeve...

But the XGE doesn't require a spellcaster?

@Rubiksmoose It does indirectly since you need to know the spells
Just doesn't use that word explicitly

@Rubiksmoose yup, just deleted

6:06 PM
@DavidCoffron Does it? I haven't looked but the current answer doesn't even imply that.

@Rubiksmoose also XGtE distinguishes between spell scrolls, potions, and other magic items. It's very different
Regular magic items don't require spellcasting at all. Just a formula, tool/arcana proficiency, and magical ingredients/quest

@DavidCoffron Interesting. I think that either the question needs to be scoped in, or the answers need to be exanded then.

@Rubiksmoose and you can craft potions and scrolls without spellcasting

@DavidCoffron Only if you go with the optional Xanathar rule, though, right?

It's just scribing and brewing don't require as many resources at straight crafting (but have greater prerequisites)
@NautArch thats what I'm discussing, yes

6:16 PM
Well I left a comment and it seems they are updating the answer.
So good work team?

@Rubiksmoose I wish I could leave an answer. It's a messy topic bc the rules are so different and not well defined. Too bad I'm mobile and at work.

@DavidCoffron It sounds like it. I was beginning to think I was just silly for being confused here. I also haven't looked at the book about this recently at all.

@Rubiksmoose I pulled up dndbeyond on my phone (thanks @NautArch). It is messier even than I remembered

@DavidCoffron and they've cleaned it up a bit :(
the app is the worst thing ever

No I meant that XGtE rules are messier. I love dndbeyond
I just open it on chrome. Works like a charm

6:49 PM
What is a "potion of supreme healing" from XGtE healing potion brewing rules? Do we have stats for that somewhere?
Oh. They are in DMG. I don't know how I missed that

7:13 PM
healing pots in 5e are odd to me
with the way their pseudo magic missile logic

7:32 PM
@goodguy5 you mean the fact that they always work?

well.. that... and the d4+1
2d4+2
4d4+4
etc, right?

@goodguy5 ...what?

how do all of the potions of healing work?
minor through supreme

the supreme has 2x meat and cheese, and it comes with all the toppings

The dmg has base, greater, superior, and supreme, and they all restore amounts equal to some number of d4 + something, what about it?
Random tidbit I just read: Potions of invisibility are actually invisible
2

7:40 PM
@GreySage I'd like some source with that claim please

DMG, potion of invisibility: "This potion's container looks empty but feels as though it holds liquid"

@GreySage yea. just like magic missile is +1 for each d4, so are healing pots

@goodguy5 Except for Supreme, which is 10d4 + 20

o.O
ah
didn't know that

@GreySage That's fantastic, I try to use a system for determining potion appearances, but that's a good exception

7:46 PM
@GreySage hah!

7:57 PM
@MikeQ Is it called Nethack?
@GreySage So what if you dribble some potion of invisibility while drinking it in a hurry? And it dries and leaves an invisible residue on your face?
That only people with true sight can see?

@Yuuki That's how you get invisible ants

So it seems we have a wrong answer on one of our Fate questions here (seconded by Fred Hicks): rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/115825/…

@Rubiksmoose Get out the pitchforks?

@GreySage Naturally! I might put a bounty out there so that it can be corrected, verified, and a better answer given rep (if the current corrected one isn't good enough).

I don't know enough about Fate to get my pitchfork

8:15 PM
I know I read through the rules once or twice, but not enough to really do anything right now. But a bounty should attract the right eyes. I know there are people here who can certainly answer it.

@MikeQ just join the angry mob. You don't need to agree with them (or even understand their arguments)

just talk loudly and indistinguishably and look really upset. Look for cues to raise your pitchfork and maybe yell louder.

@Rubiksmoose rabblerabblerabble

That's the spirit! You all aren't paid to talk pretty. You're here to make noise and look angry.

8:39 PM
Is it mean/uncalled for/unreasonable to tell someone that they need not put spaces before all of their punctuation in a comment under their question? They do it every single time.

@Rubiksmoose I don 't think it 's mean /uncalled for /unreasonable . But consider that it might not be purposeful . Sometimes , keyboards glitch out and do weird things and people can 't be bothered to fix it .

@Yuuki But every time though? This user posts many questions here and I don't think I've seen a single post without this error in it. It gets frustrating after a while. But then again, it is a really minor thing overall and probably only bothers a few people. And is also relatively easy to fix. But still. It would be nice if the user would take care of it.

@Rubiksmoose Actually , if it happens every time , then it 's maybe more believable that it 's device error .

you are evil lol
(I mean that in the kindest way.)

I spilled some stuff on my keyboard awhile ago and I would inadvertently add spaces in front of every 2 , 3 , or period .
I took it apart and cleaned it and it was fine after it dried .
@Rubiksmoose : D

8:48 PM
@Yuuki That would be pretty annoying lol.
With all the numeric input I do it would absolutely kill me until I fixed it.

@Rubiksmoose Just convert every number into a base that doesn't require 2s or 3s for that particular number. Easy peasy

@ACuriousMind Genius!

@ACuriousMind too many judgment calls. Just convert all numbers to octal, but use 01456789 as the set of characters.

@nitsua60 No judgement calls. Just determine the lowest base for which it works
...at which point I guess you're writing in binary
I admittedly didn't think it through :P

"Judgment calls" was the wrong way to put it. More "too many evaluations."
=D

8:52 PM
This would make my spreadsheets look absolutely amazing. And very intuitive.

(Come to think of it, I may have to do this in a class next year. See how long it takes the kids to catch on.)

@nitsua60 You'd have to defend "4 + 4 = 6" at that point, which has a rather Orwellian feel to it

Just stroll into a math class, introduce yourself as the subtitute "Mr(s). Hector", and then proceed to never use 7 in any of the problems you demonstrate.
And also don't use 9.

@Yuuki Better, everytime 7 comes up, spell it out. "seven3+3.4seven9"

No, never use seven. You are Mr. Hector after all and 7 8 9.

8:56 PM
hey there @ACuriousMind

I'm not getting the connection between Hector and 7

@nitsua60 I am probably going to add to my answer on the CoC, given how icky the prose style is, but then I looked at the two linked examples and wondered if that's even worth the effort.

@Shalvenay hola

how're things going?

@GreySage Hector -> "hecto-" -> Greek numeral prefix for six -> "why is six afraid of seven?"

9:01 PM
@Yuuki ..."hecto-" means "hundred"...

I blame Wikipedia.
"Sixth" not "six", but still.
@ACuriousMind According to the table, that's "hecato(n)-".

@Yuuki "Hecto-" - the SI prefix - is a corruption of "hecato-", which comes from Greek hecaton, meaning "hundred". The prefix for "six" is "hexa-", coming from Greek hexa, meaning "six".
Which Wiki page are you quoting from?

Numeral or number prefixes are prefixes derived from numerals or occasionally other numbers. In English and other European languages, they are used to coin numerous series of words, such as unicycle – bicycle – tricycle, dyad – triad – decade, biped – quadruped, September – October – November – December, decimal – hexadecimal, sexagenarian – octogenarian, centipede – millipede, etc. There are two principal systems, taken from Latin and Greek, each with several subsystems; in addition, Sanskrit occupies a marginal position. There is also an international set of metric prefixes, which are used in...

@KorvinStarmast It seems fine to me. I'm just jumping in my skin--it's intimidating throwing my first answer up on MSE =)

I'm going to be a player (like in a real long-term campaign, because I'm in love with the group) for the first time in a while, and I need to know how much backstory is too much. (I've written 25 pages and condensed a short summary). Should I scrap my full text or show it to my GM to make sure it fits into the world? Is vagueness better so my GM has an easier time fitting it in, or is depth better so my GM has less work? (I know it depend on the GM, but what are some other GM's opinions?)

9:08 PM
@DavidCoffron 25 pages is probably too much and for me, would be intimidating. But it all depends on how your DM likes to craft campaigns.

@Yuuki Ah, now here's a funny thing: That "hecto-" comes from Greek hektos, indeed meaning "sixth".
Of course, the name Hector derives from neither, but I guess that was never the point :P

@DavidCoffron I suggest doing it like a resume. Do a one page "high points" and as much as you want for the long version. Korvin Starmast's back story was presented to my DM that way. He liked both, and used bits of both. My fellow players included two "TLDR" only sorts, and three who like more meat (including both of the ones who are published authors)
@nitsua60 Heh, the icky I was referring to is the prose style in the CoC, but that's as much a combination of it being a matter of taste and how I used to have to write policy documents ... about half of a lifetime ago.

@KorvinStarmast Huh, I never thought about it that way, but putting together a character resume seems useful.

Sanity Check: Am I being too sensitive to his usage of "competent DMs" in my comment on this answer?

@Yuuki Each DM has their own page count tolerance: find out what it is before you write the back story. :)

9:14 PM
@nitsua60 I think it would be helpful for the pinned message to also include a link to the Code of Conduct draft and a place to put feedback.

@DavidCoffron It is borderline for me, but I think your comment is perfect.

@Yuuki The link is in the meta question, but I had to look twice to see it.

Sure, it's only two clicks to click the message and then click the post above it.
But eh, one click is better.

@DavidCoffron I took serious issue with one answer which said "No DM worth their salt would..." with 5 answers above it saying that exact thing. I just edited that out (also had some profanity in there so I was already editing anyways).

9:17 PM
That's not really what I mean. I'm saying that the current pinned message (this one) should be edited to include a link (or links) to the Meta post that's above it and/or the Google doc.
Not really saying that I can't find it myself.

@Yuuki Yes, that sounds good.

@Rubiksmoose yeah that one was rough

I'm trying to remember if there's a fairy tale parody where the dragon kidnaps the princess, they end up the standard romcom love-hate relationship, the knight arrives on his quest, and then proceeds to try to play matchmaker for the two. And then the knight becomes the dragon's best man.
It sounds familiar.
Might be some random webcomic.

@Yuuki Since I could not edit the message, I did the next best thing. You could star my link to bump it up. (Uh, maybe not, I guess starring is being looked at with some care)

@Yuuki good call. Editing.

9:28 PM
@Rubiksmoose Which answer was that, the "worth their salt" one?

1 hour later…
10:29 PM
Ooh, the Fate SRD now has Codex material!

@KorvinStarmast Ugh. I've been digging out of boredom and I found this reference but no link. Any help @Rubiksmoose

11:24 PM
@DavidCoffron I like a good challenge. Let's see if I can find it.

11:40 PM
@DavidCoffron @KorvinStarmast found it! Can you cast a magic initiate spell using spell slots?

@Rubiksmoose haha. Turns out the questions is relevant to a recent discussion we had. Coincidences are great

@DavidCoffron Right?!
I had to search through my comments page by page until I found a reference to "nice" lol

I tried looking through your be revisions for the week before you mentioned it on chat but didn't find it
I guess I missed it

Yeah I started down that path as well. But then I thought of the comment thing and found it surprisingly quickly.

@Rubiksmoose that answer is also grossly incorrect. Nothing allows spell slots to be used with any spell you know. And the Spellcasting feature is what allows you to use spell slots with specific spells
Magic Initiate is more specific than the general Spellcasting rules

11:52 PM
Good morning...
All...
(My very poorly thought out attempt at gravitas)

@DavidCoffron Very much agreed. Also my comment below the answer showing that the book does indeed limit Sorcerer to casting Sorcerer slots. It was just not good all around. To say the least.

ugh.... had to sign in to do some after hours work... what's crackin on the stack?
