@kviiri This thread lists several African authors who have recently won awards.

Thanks
I'm a bit too tired to really remember any of those names for now though :P
I want to sleep but I still cling on to the hopeless fantasy of getting something done today
I guess I'll just retire to the bedchamber and try to read the paper enough so tomorrow's work will be easier
Thanks for the interesting chat day
See y'all again

@NautArch @nitsua60 At long last, I have discovered a use for a Kender besides shark bait.

I figure the best use for a kender is scapegoat.

@kviiri To be crystal clear, I take actual PTSD very seriously, given the number of people I know with it.

@KorvinStarmast I think that was clear from your post personally. Though I suspect as you said that this conversation will not be a productive one on here. Not least because many of us are not qualified to speak about such matters with authority I suspect
@KorvinStarmast BTW good edit to your answer. It cleared up all my concerns.

@Rubiksmoose Thanks, I was afk for a bit when the browser kicked me out/crashed, as I tried to edit, and a few RL things arose that required attention. Your patience is appreciated. :)

Pardon the obviousness, but considering RPG discussion today I feel a need to say it out loud: If you expect the success of your product will come purely or primarily as a result of its quality, you are in the business of buying lottery tickets, and that’s not a great business.

10:09 PM
@KorvinStarmast I don't know what your analogy is referring to (the football/rugby one). Maybe I'm missing something obvious
You don't throw people at other players in either sport

@doppelgreener You can't just roll +Design, you've gotta also create a lot of advantages with skills like Marketing and Distribution.

@DavidCoffron A self-launched airborne body would be physically identical to a body thrown by something.

@Rubiksmoose not for the purposes of the rules he's referencing. Me jumping at someone does not deal 1d4 damage

@DavidCoffron Refer to my comment on that same answer about physics and D&D

@DavidCoffron If you have never tackled, or been tackled, while playing football/rugby, then I guess you won't understand.

10:14 PM
@KorvinStarmast I have been, I don't know why the analogy is relevant to who rolls the damage die

oh man. @NautArch remember that "i found this homebrew material sword, what do the rules say about it?" question, and our discussion over whether or not to add the homebrew tag to it? this comes to mind as a sibling example of that, replace homebrew material with homebrew maneuver.
(and in case those memories are traumatic, my apologies)
(it was a heck of a long discussion)

@DavidCoffron The half Orc rolls the damage die, the damage is done to the target but not the Halfling. I was responding in part to NautArch's comment.

Ohhh. I gotcha. I was misplacing the analogy. Thought it was connected. It wasn't. Sorry

hey there @KorvinStarmast and @DavidCoffron

@Shalvenay @Shalvenay hey

10:17 PM
PSA: Please do not throw other players. They are trying to enjoy the game. People will get injured. Only throw characters.

@doppelgreener [Picks up DM]
[reads last part of comment] [puts DM back down again sadly]

@DavidCoffron It was better that you asked; I tried to clear that up thanks to your asking so Muchas Gracias, Señor David! 8^D

Can you throw improvised weapons since they don't count as weapons except during an attack?

@DavidCoffron Yes, I cited that part of the rule in quotes, along with the range restrictions.

@KorvinStarmast That is for throwing melee weapons. What about improvised weapons

10:21 PM
@DavidCoffron I disagree with your reading on that. Nowhere is improvised weapon confined to melee attack that I can find. Do you have an errata on that?

@KorvinStarmast I just don't picture someone throwing a dead goblin 60 feet (which you use as evidence that a halfling would be viable) as easily as just beating someone with it

@DavidCoffron Throwing the thing is what makes it an improvised weapon. It was not one before the throw

@DavidCoffron Does 5e have range increments?

@BESW it does

'cause in 3.5 I just gave awkward-to-throw improvised weapons a really short range increment.

10:23 PM
kind of, each weapon has a regular range, and long range
they aren't always incremental

@DavidCoffron but that is a different argument. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. It it RAW? Absolutely not. But it gives the DM a way to handle the situation that is consistent with the way other things are ruled.

Like, "Okay, you can throw it ten feet without penalty. For each ten feet after that you take -2 to the attack, and you can't throw it as a weapon more than fifty feet."

There is [in-range, kinda-in-range (disadvantage), out-of-range]

@Rubiksmoose It is not ridiculous to throw a Halfling, nor a kender, and you still have to score a to hit with no proficiency bonus. :)
Unless you are a tavern brawler feat user, I think. :)
I am checking SA compendium, however.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, I know his question is RAF; my separate question (regarding one of the statements in his answer) is "could you throw a dead goblin 60 feet as a ranged weapon attack" (Korvin implies that you can with his answer)

10:26 PM
@DavidCoffron I see. Yeah I would not rule that you could throw a dead goblin 60 feet reasonably lol.
@KorvinStarmast ridiculous as in the situation is ridiculous. not that it is impossible to deal with.

@Rubiksmoose I'm just sure whether the "improvised thrown weapon" section is regard to the thrown property effectively on all improvised weapons or if that refers to throwing a melee weapon

@DavidCoffron What I found was this in SA: If you attack with a shield—most likely as an improvised weapon—do you keep the +2 bonus to AC? Attacking with a shield doesn’t deprive you of the shield’s bonus to AC A thrown frying pan also does 1d4 if you successfully hit.

@KorvinStarmast ok, that helps a little. Can all improvised weapons be thrown like that then? That's a little silly

@DavidCoffron Do you disagree that you can throw a frying pan?
@DavidCoffron It is silly that an Halfling can have a 20 strength .. also.
As a max, just the same as a goliath.

@KorvinStarmast No, you are right. I just think its silly (silly, not wrong)

10:29 PM
@DavidCoffron We have an accord; it is indeed a bit silly, but I love the cinematic value of a thrown kender, by a half orc, nailing someone during combat. :)

Any object, no matter how heavy, can be thrown 60 feet now...

That's not what I said, and neither you nor I know how strong a half orc really is ...

Any object can be used as an improvised weapon, so as long as you can lift it, you can throw it per the improvised weapon rules

I can throw a frying pan more than 60', though it hurt when I did.

Sorry... any object that you can wield
which is just to hold and use (as a weapon or tool)

10:31 PM
Reducto ad absurdum is also silly, even though fun. One could rule, as a DM, limitations if one likes.

@KorvinStarmast I just don't understand why they didn't just write: "your GM decides if the improvised weapon can be thrown, if so, it has a range of 20 feet/60 feet"
wouldve saved a lot of headache

@DavidCoffron because they didn't put nearly as much thought into it as we have likely.
So many things are like that for me. I think "Why didn't they just..." for so many things...
Either that or they are secretly part of a Tylenol-selling conspiracy :)
@KorvinStarmast Reducto ad absurdum is also a great Harry Potter spell

Well... a shotput is 16 lbs. A goblin is between 1.5x and 2x that. World record for shotput is about 70 feet, cut that in half and you get 35 feet. And that is the world record (I know that's not quite how throwing works and you could get some torque with a goblin, but I don't feel like modelling it right now)
Now if you spin like in weight throw, you could reasonably get 70-80 feet (top ranking ranges)
Is there a reason behind the jeff tag on this chat?

@BESW I read it years ago. Also there was a 1997 movie adaptation called Get a Clue, not to be confused with a 2002 movie with the same name

@MikeQ Is it any good? I remember it exists once every three years or so but never track it down to watch.

@BESW I haven't watched it in at least a decade, so... maybe

@KorvinStarmast my apologies for the damage comment. That was supposed to be a joke.

@KorvinStarmast +1 for dead goblin and "raf"

hey there @joshusmu, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Thoughts on how to upscale a great sword in 5e?
1d10 for a long sword in two hands
2d6 for great sword
Then... 3d6? Or 2d6+1d4?

I would do 2d8 personally @goodguy5
1d10 averages to 5.5, 2d6 averages to 7, 2d8 averages to 9... it's close

As per 3.x

Sort of. What is this being used for?
