Looks like algorithmic error may be the cause of the 737 crashes: forbes.com/sites/taylorarmerding/2018/11/20/…

@nbro also a good Chinese Room link at Stanford: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/chinese-room/

Still, I think your instinct to ask is correct. We need to build this Stack, and the one thing we have going for us is the high search value of SE in general. A question with a simple title, designed for search, and good answers, breaking down the links, would surely benefit SE:AI.

Ideally one of the answers would be suitable for the general audience, avoiding technical language, similar to how shows like Nova do it.

"DeepMind is asking how Google helped turn the internet into an echo chamber" technologyreview.com/s/613083/…

@DuttaA A very good point, but I'd still argue that Kelly's take is fundamentally flawed. Tech Review did publish a brief counter argument by David Silver in which he concludes that "A baby doesn’t worry about its career, or how many kids it’s going to have. It is playing with toys and learning manipulation skills. There’s an awful lot to learn about the world in the absence of a final goal. The same can and should be true of our systems."

Thanks for compiling that list of Overflow questions. Your initial work listing math questions was instrumental in getting latex formatting for AI. Old questions can't be migrated with standard mod tools so far as I know, but I'll raise the issue in mod chat and see if there are any options.

@nbro I agree with you on Neil and Dennis--I would certainly nominate them! I honestly have no idea when we might expect elections, and suspect it partly has to do with low overall participation (raw daily users), despite our having a good number of experienced and knowledgeable contributors, but that's just a guess. In cognizance of this we're definitely trying to mod in accord with the will of the active and vocal members of the community.

From the wiki:

Arthur Lee Samuel (December 5, 1901 – July 29, 1990) was an American pioneer in the field of computer gaming and artificial intelligence. He coined the term "machine learning" in 1959. The Samuel Checkers-playing Program was among the world's first successful self-learning programs, and as such a very early demonstration of the fundamental concept of artificial intelligence.

Pleased to announce that after a prolonged campaign MATH FORMATTING IS NOW ENABLED ON SE:AI!

This article from Deepmind may provide some insight: theverge.com/2017/7/19/15998610/… You may also want to ask about Neural Networks creating their own heuristics.

@JustinKaz we get people asking about the hypothetical singularity all the time, which is a far fuzzier topic atm than your simple question.
May 3, 2018 19:42
@JustinKaz We do have a few NN experts on this site, just that they tend to be busy, and not generally active on chat.

This is a very interesting theoretical question. My advice would be to post and actual question and use the "theorics" and "ai-basics" tag in conjunction with "machine-learning" and "unassisted-learning" tags. Even if your intent is creative (fiction, etc.), that's a legit aspect of the wider scope of the field of AI, where certain writers such as Asimov have used narrative to convey important concepts to the general public, which in turn supports the serious research by

@DuttaA talk to the neo-luddists. We've been in danger since the harnessing of fire. I take it more seriously when engineers with world-beating track records bring it up, or mathematicians like Hawking who are comfortable with very big numbers.
Mar 5, 2018 20:16
@Mithrandir That sounds like a very good idea. There is a lot of NN knowledge on this Stack, and I've specifically created "ai-basics" and "getting-started" tags for this purpose.

So @DukeZhou I was wondering if it would be of use to have some basic questions about starting to create a neural network. I was thinking of trying to create one, but I know nothing about it, so having AI.SE essentially "walk me through it" would allow having a good resource on creating a neural network for everyone on Google to find.
Mar 3, 2018 17:22
@DukeZhou If it's on topic, don't migrate (with some rare exceptions if the OP requests it). If it's off topic then it's a different story. Instead of sending our valuable content away, try to attract people to answer them. Sending questions away because they didn't get an answer is, to be frank, a really bad idea. Focus on attracting more users instead.

Q: Should we do a mass migration of Data Sciency questions on AI that remain unanswered?

DukeZhouMy personal position is we should indeed take basic questions on any aspect of AI, so I'm not suggesting we end our experiment accepting implementation questions, but, where these questions haven't attracted an answer on AI, should we migrate to SE:Data Science or SE:Cross Validated?

I have a hard time not seeing this robot as "alive": boston.com/news/technology/2018/02/21/…

For perspective, some months ago you made a very salient comment about the need for more math and science on this Stack, which I strongly agree with. (I may have argued vehemently in support of the philosophical and social components of this Stack, but that should not be taken as an indicator that I believe your instincts are wrong--quite the opposite.)

@nbro I've opened up a meta to discuss how AI can be strengthened, and would be extremely interested in your thoughts on the subject: ai.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1296/1671
Apr 21, 2017 20:41
In my own endeavor, I'm more interested in the kid who can figure out how to build that strong tic-tac-toe AI with no schooling, because it indicates a type of creativity that may be useful in tackling non-trivial, and even wildly intractable problems, which are the central concern of this field.

So are we going to rename this or not?

@BenN I have put my points, and that's all I can do :)

I have seen what happens to a site(Hardware Recs) which narrows down scope too much, and I didn't want this site to follow the same fate.
Aug 6, 2016 14:51
That makes sense, but again, it's very important that our site doesn't look the same as CV and DS - the frontpage is just as important as all our meta conversations when it comes to attracting new people

Q: Can we have LaTeX formatting support?

rcpintoI was going to answer a question about reinforcement learning and wanted to show some formulas using the same notation I use on CrossValidated, for instance: $r_{t+1}+\gamma \max_a Q(s_{t+1},a)$ But it is currently not supported, at least the way I tried it. Can we have support for LaTeX format...

Should we rename our chatbots? Retrocomputing has "Annoying Robot", can we top it? :-)
