Hello Everyone! :)

That moment when you inadvertently "nano some-large-file" and freeze everything.

@NathanOsman nice

32 bit chipsets are horrible! askubuntu.com/q/803326/367990
I also have one in my desktop. Such a pain.

probably OP's fault for not checking bitness of chipset

@edwinksl bittiness

I'm following the template of swappiness

@NathanOsman does it match brand and clock speed of the current RAM?

No, the stick that is in there now is some generic brand.
It looks like the clock speeds match though... if I'm not mistaken.
Speed: 1333 MHz
SPD Speed: 1333MHz

then you should be fine

12:14 AM
Brand should not matter, only clock frequency, timings and type must be compatible.

They are both DDR3, so type matches.

good

I'm not sure what the clock speed on the Corsair one is though.
Speed Rating PC3-12800 (1600MHz)

The tech specs say 1333
that's probably the OC speec

@ThomasWard When will it be then?

12:20 AM
28th

@NathanOsman But the latency?

@Serg What do you mean by "your bellowed desktop" o.O? askubuntu.com/a/608287/367990

@AndroidDev How do I find that?

@NathanOsman Uhhhhhhh.... have no idea.

@NathanOsman ping your RAM

12:22 AM
@Zacharee1 :)

nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ ping /dev/shm
ping: unknown host /dev/shm
@Zacharee1 nothing :D

@NathanOsman Found it.

darn
:p

10-10-10-27 latency

That's for the Corsair one?

12:23 AM
@NathanOsman Correct.

what does that mean?
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN

@NathanOsman

Memory timings or RAM timings measure the performance of DRAM memory using four parameters: CL, TRCD, TRP, and TRAS in units of clock cycles; they are commonly written as four numbers separated with dashes, e.g. 7-8-8-24. The fourth (tRAS) is often omitted, and a fifth, the Command rate, sometimes added (normally 2T or 1T - also 2N, 1N). These parameters specify the latencies (time delays) that affect speed of random access memory. Lower numbers usually imply faster performance. What determines absolute system performance is actual latency time, usually measured in nanoseconds. When translating...

@Zacharee1 They are the CAS latency.

@ByteCommander ohh

12:25 AM
---=== Memory Characteristics ===---

Medium time base                                0.125 ns
Maximum module speed 1333 MHz (PC3-10600)

Got that from running decode-dimms.

@NathanOsman But that only gave the command rate.
Which is not very helpful

---=== Timing Parameters ===---
Minimum Write Recovery time (tWR) 15.000 ns

Minimum Read to Pre-charge CMD Delay (tRTP) 7.500 ns
Minimum Four Activate Window Delay (tFAW) 30.000 ns
Is that what you're looking for?

not the same I think

Nope.

12:26 AM
It needs to be x-x-x-xx
For example, DDR3-1600 is usually 9-9-9-24.

9-9-9-24 sounds close enough to me :p

Isn't that what "tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS 9-9-9-24" is?
It's in the first paste.

@NathanOsman OOOOOH.
Missed that!

lol

But wait a second.
Corsair rates it for 10-10-10-27...

12:28 AM
Is that bad?

@NathanOsman No.

yes, your computer will blow up

Oh whew.

@NathanOsman That means it's performing better than spec!

@Zacharee1 Don't tell the insurance company :D

12:28 AM
and then a Zedd concert will appear in your house

@AndroidDev So it will work with my other stick if I add it then?

The mem controller should automatically adjust timings to comfort the slower brick, I think.

how many slots do you have?

Only two unfortunately.

@NathanOsman Although, maybe not necessarily better, since you're running it at 1333, which is a step down from 1600. So maybe it's right on spec then.

Q: Ubuntu theme gone wrong (Macbuntu 16.04)

SoujiroSo I recently downloaded ubuntu to do a dual boot with windows 8.1. Everything went perfectly fine, smooth as butter. The I went to set up ubuntu to my personal liking, which happens to be the OSX style UI. http://www.noobslab.com/2016/04/macbuntu-1604-transformation-pack-for.htmlI used this, wor...

@NathanOsman What's the latency of your other stick?

@NathanOsman aw. I was going to suggest that you just put the other stick in the non-matching slot or something

@AndroidDev I'm not sure. What am I looking for?

wait
ignore me

@AndroidDev BTW, I really appreciate your help with this. I am a software engineer, but I know so little about hardware it's embarrassing.

12:31 AM
@NathanOsman Wait a second. I came it late to this conversation. Which stick do you have in now?

I'm turning into @ThomasWard
@AndroidDev generic

@AndroidDev I have a generic brand 8 GB stick in there now.

Hmm... It's 2:30 and my battery is getting red. I think I should try to get some sleep now.

Anything I've pasted from the terminal is about that one.

Good night folks.

12:31 AM
I'm thinking of adding the Corsair stick,

@NathanOsman Oh.

@ByteCommander Goodnight.
Sorry for the confusion :)
@AndroidDev BTW, I really appreciate your help with this. I am a software engineer, but I know so little about hardware it is embarrassing.

@NathanOsman Hmm. Well, just FYI, I'm running 16GB of DDR3-1600 on a motherboard that officially only supports DDR3-1066 :)
@NathanOsman No problem!

So I should be okay to use both of those sticks together?

@AndroidDev whoa your avatar changed

12:33 AM
@NathanOsman As long as the voltage is the same. Run MemTest from a live CD for 1 pass to be sure.
If you get errors, then you know there's a problem :)
@NathanOsman - I have to go now, but I'll be back in just a bit :)

No problem.

I'm glad this guy's actually taking initiative and learning, but he needs to learn what "formatting" means askubuntu.com/questions/803339/…

it is unclear how that typo even happened

1:21 AM
@NathanOsman what is that

it has a cool name

It's a NEMA 1-15P receptacle.

ok...

But I can't find a decent cheap one. I mean it's basically plastic and metal.
I can get ones at the local hardware store for about $3-4.
Why are they so expensive online?

shipping?

heh

So Amazon is ripping us off :D

@ByteCommander it is beloved XD
i don't grammar anymore

did you ever? >:D

1:26 AM
you used to be grammar?

i think serg is trying to blame us for his sloppiness

in my ESL class they voted me up as the guy with best grammar and vocab
@edwinksl no, i blame years in engineering major

Linux initialism ? maybe if you said Java i could agree but nuuuu
public static void someJavaCarp

I don't think OP realizes rEFInd exists for a very specific reason askubuntu.com/questions/803348/…

@NathanOsman - I'm back :)
Did memtest finish successfully?

@Serg lots of *nix initialisms and acronyms use the centers of words or multiple syllables in one word

Oh, I didn't run it yet.

lol

1:33 AM
I have run it in the past on this stick though.
And it didn't have any issues.

@NathanOsman - But it's important to test with the two sticks together.
To make sure the memory controller doesn't get confused
when you have the different brands mixed.

time to cook up some rice

@Serg With...
Chicken? Beans?

serg is so asian

Are @NathanOsman and @edwinksl icons the same?

1:35 AM
@AndroidDev I don't have the second stick yet.
@AndroidDev Similar but not the same.

@NathanOsman Oh.
I thought you had it on hand

I haven't bought it yet :D
That's why I was trying to figure out if it would work.
Then I would know whether or not to buy it.

wow, this is going to be either epic, or terrible

LOL.

I'm making "Tux Hunt"

1:41 AM
Let me know when you need a tester.

@AndroidDev just rice first, and then i'll add some canned chicken and something else

serg = changed man

i believe so

for better or for worse? :P

i hope for better. I passed C and electronics classes , even though it took me lots of pain. I have learned some python and bash.

How can we know if Seth's computer is real if Seth ain't real?

how do we know if you are real if serg eats rice?

How do we know you are real or a (badly coded) bot?

I mean not that I haven't done that...I am married after all...just not right now...

trying not to make a joke about netflix and chill . . . .
Anyway , I've thrown 2 bags of papers today . . . .that's how my day was . . .

^good point

I have too many tabs open, they are getting in my way...

Tabs Go : gotta close 'em all
Pokemon Puns Go: gotta make 'em all

3:37 AM
hmmm
how do I fix this:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

@TheXed you have something running, apt-get update, or software centre is installing something
wait till that finishes, and then you can use it

THere is nothing running or installing...
at least there shouldn't be...

ps -ef | grep 'apt\|dpkg\|software'

sudo apt-get upgrade...what the heck is it doing?

You have upgrade running ?

3:41 AM
No...
but I guess it is...
I am just going to restart the thing...

no need
just kill all the processes

To late...already restarted...
how do I kill them all in the future?

Exactly how it sounds : sudo killall apt-get
or find their pid first via ps -ef and then kill -SIGTERM 1234 , where 1234 is pid

Oh just apt-get process..I thought you meant all running processes..

3:46 AM

@edwinksl lol , but by default we're sending SIGTERM by default,

Cool!

Not tonight, but maybe I'll try it on the weekend.
The coolest thing ever would be for me to do a screencast when I'm flying this.

my friend proposed to his gf with the ring flown to her on a drone
which i thought was pretty sick

I'll have it written down ;)

that may take some time . . . .

5:29 AM
mess of a question

any python peeps?

em . . . maybe ?
how can i halp

okay what do I need to fix?

5:33 AM
Newline is missing...

add space between ) and except ?
@TheXed can you post some of the code ?

@Serg the code is here:
and that did not fix it.

you need to run the file with python 3
replace python with python3
or just chmod +x it and run ./flickup.py

@edwinksl same error

if len(username)>0 : smtp.login(username,password)
That needs newline
( line 62 )
sorry, 62

5:37 AM
what do you mean new line?

@Serg no newline is needed

My debian is lonely

No ideas?

@edwinksl technically not needed but it's not good formatting
hold on X , I'm gonna see what i can do with it

I shouldn't be working on complex programming issues at 12:30 at night when I have to work the next morning lol

5:41 AM
gaaah, it needs bunch of imports that i dont have , bleh

Don't worry about it...I am about to go to bed @Serg

@TheXed i looked over it , at least so far i see no missing newlines or parenthesis . It's they typical cause of issue

@Serg probably because I don't know what I am doing.
@Serg anyways time for me to hit the hey...or something like that

alright, sleep tight
@TheXed can you hold on ?

Sure...

5:50 AM
That way you get the code exactly as posted on the repo
then do sudo python3 flickup.py

what is the command to rename a file?

@edwinksl yeah , not the prettiest code . pep8 checker just spits out whole page of issues
mv file1 file2
mv my_original.py my_new.py

yeah it catches all exceptions and their mothers
