@terdon Okay. I'll know for the future :)

The GPU fan is not moving
and it seems to exist

@Zacharee1 Hmmmm.
Hardware problem! :)
Speedfan isn't the best software though.
Open Hardware Monitor is way better.

That looks like GNOME 3

Q: Good Software center for linux?

pikachuI need a good software center for linux that a I can install/update/remove apps from it I have used ubuntu software center and deepin.. this one https://www.sendspace.com/file/f1ihki is good also but I think they're not as good as possible thanks

so idk if it is

1:05 PM
@Zacharee1 I edited my comment to say:
That looks like Kali. Are you using Ubuntu GNOME?
@Zacharee1 - What's difference between ending a process and killing it?

Why Kali, specifically?

ending lets it shut down normally and save stuff, clear cache, etc
killing just stops it

@terdon That's what came to mind.
@Zacharee1 Thought so.
@Zacharee1 So which does xkill do?

dunno

Kill?

1:09 PM
I really think we should always assume Ubuntu unless we have compelling evidence to the contrary. First because 90% of all problems are distro-agnostic and second because the desktop environment is just a skin over the system. Any distribution can run any desktop environment.
@AndroidDev Makes your cursor into a cross and kills any GUI app you click on

DEATH

@terdon But does it end or kill?

user136984
> Xkill is a utility for forcing the X server to close connections to
clients. This program is very dangerous, but is useful for aborting
programs that have displayed undesired windows on a user's screen. If
no resource identifier is given with -id, xkill will display a special
cursor as a prompt for the user to select a window to be killed. If a
pointer button is pressed over a non-root window, the server will close
its connection to the client that created the window.

user136984
Don't you people ever read the manpages?

@ParanoidPanda Uuuuuhhh...
man xkill?

1:11 PM
@ParanoidPanda no never

user136984
Yes

> This command does not provide any warranty that the application whose
connection to the X server is closed will abort nicely, or even abort
at all. All this command does is to close the connection to the X
server. Many existing applications do indeed abort when their connecā€
tion to the X server is closed, but some can choose to continue.
So it might kill, it might end. Depends on the process.

@terdon Notice that I asked if it was Ubuntu GNOME :)

@AndroidDev Oh, yeah, I wasn't whining about your comment this time.

@terdon :)

user136984
1:13 PM
@AndroidDev: If you have no evidence of it being anything other than Ubuntu GNOME, then posting such a comment is a little bit odd...

Although, if I were to whine, I'd point out that there's no reason to be running Ubuntu Gnome just because you use Gnome :P

user136984
@terdon: Sorry, but to use whine.exe you need WINE! ;P

@ParanoidPanda Well, the only distro I've used with GNOME is Kali. I didn't actually know there was such a thing as Ubuntu GNOME till now.
@ParanoidPanda +1
@terdon I once tried to install KDE on 14.04. That was the worst idea ever.

@AndroidDev You can install any desktop environment on any Linux. AFAIK, Ubuntu/Debian is a bit odd in that its packaging system is very badly set up and you can have minor conflicts but (and again AFAIK) those are mostly about the flavor branding and not anything important.

KDE is great

1:16 PM
I always have more than one DE on my system.
I used to always have Gnome, KDE, WindowMaker and sometimes more

@terdon KDE Would freeze after 5 seconds.

user136984
@terdon: I thought that Debian/Ubuntu was meant to have the best packaging system around?

@AndroidDev Could be due to any number of things.

@terdon - And then I couldn't get rid of it!
I tried to remove it,

how?

1:17 PM
@ParanoidPanda Certainly one of them. But the way they've packaged the desktop environments so it's hard to install multiple ones is completely idiotic.

but it only freed like 25MB out of the ~500MB downloaded.

Yeah. The joys of meta-packages

what did you run?

I have to say, I do not miss the Debian packaging system since moving to Arch

@terdon I HATE meta packages.

1:18 PM
Yeah

@Zacharee1 Don't remember :P
@terdon Is it hard to install?

In my experience rpm/yum < apt/dpkg <<< pacman/yaourt

because you should have removed kde-* and kubuntu-*

user136984
@AndroidDev: You should have a look at the flavours list by the way. ;)

@terdon wakka wakka

1:19 PM
@AndroidDev Yes and no. If you follow the beginners guide to the letter it should work perfectly. But there's no GUI installer and you need to know your way around the command line.

@ParanoidPanda Oooh.

Arch is not for those who want an easy to set up system. it's great if you want to spend some time setting it up and if you want a system that's exactly how you want it.

@terdon As long as I don't have to use parted from the CMD, I think I'd do OK.

Most people, understandably enough, would rather it just works.
@AndroidDev You will if you haven't already set the partitions up beforehand.

@terdon And if I pre-partition in Gparted?

1:20 PM
Is Arch like Build-your-own-Linux?

@AndroidDev Then you won't need to partition in parted.

user136984
@terdon: Which distro did you say you used again?

@Zacharee1 Not quite, no. It's just a much more hand-on installation process.
@ParanoidPanda Arch for the past year or so

@Zacharee1 Might you know where the most current guide on making a custom Ubuntu ISO is located?

nope

1:22 PM
@Zacharee1 it is for masochists :=D

agh
the pings

@AndroidDev I do :=D

@Rinzwind :)

user136984
@terdon: Have you tried Fedora?

1:23 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yes. I spent a few years with first RedHat and then, when it came out, Fedora at work.

@ParanoidPanda CentOS you mean. Fedore is payware

I also used to have SuSe and then openSuSe at home.
@Rinzwind No it isn't! RedHat is payware

oh sorry >:-)
now explain the gunzip comment you made >:=)

@Rinzwind - So where is it located?

thought you never asked ;-)
server or desktop

1:25 PM
$ gzip file
$ mv file.gz file
$ gunzip file
\gzip: file: unknown suffix -- ignored
@Rinzwind

user136984
@terdon: I might be duel-booting with Fedora soon. Who knows, if I like it enough, I might even switch to it for a while. A change is good.

@Rinzwind Both would be helpful.
But desktop more so.

@ParanoidPanda Sure. Distro hopping is a good thing. Most of you kids who've only ever tried Ubuntu think Ubuntu == Linux :P

@terdon that is stupid and windows mentality :(

@terdon Debian is the original flavor...
Right?

1:26 PM
@Rinzwind Yes. But that's the way it is.
@AndroidDev Of what? Of Linux? Of course not.

basically also useable for desktop since all you need to do is include it into it ;D

@Zacharee1 Ugh, probably. I would guess the underlying issue is configuring his webserver to run and not display php files but it's hard to tell.

@terdon zcat is far better >:-)

1:29 PM
@terdon Okay, well RedHat and Debian are the big ones.

@Rinzwind I'm sure there's a reason they made gzip behave that way. Might be a stupid reason, mind you.
@AndroidDev And slackware. In terms of age, anyway

@terdon race conditions probably

@terdon - Say, want to know what I have sitting in my stuff closet?

if "file" has a file named "file" in it ... problem

@AndroidDev As long as it's not edible...:P

1:31 PM

@Rinzwind That wouldn't be an issue here, gz only deals with single files, it doesn't make archives
@AndroidDev Oh wow :)

aha

@terdon But I can't install the stupid thing!

Well, yeah, it's probably older than @ParanoidPanda

@terdon I tried to install it in a VM, but the installer just freezes right after booting :(

1:33 PM
This has to be too broad askubuntu.com/questions/803589/…

that doesn't make any sense

@Zacharee1 I know.
Is he using Kali or not?

well Kali uses GNOME
but that still doesn't make sense
he can't use Kali so he's using GNOME?

@Zacharee1 See my next comment there.
@terdon - Judging by your comment you think it's Kali?

1:38 PM
@AndroidDev Heh, now yes. The OP basically said so.
Im basically screwed , kali forums captcha wont let me through for some reason and ubuntu guys probably wont answer :'( , guess ill be using gnome for a while — Abdul Rehman 6 mins ago

*swoon* at that graph
sweet sweet data

user136984
@AndroidDev: Maybe because of your comment he tried to go on the Kali forums but that didn't work.

@Zanna lol :)

user136984
Perhaps he's just some Unity-lover who's stuck on GNOME and only did anything with Kali because of your comment. But I don't know.

@terdon the comment says he can't use Kali so he's using GNOME
but Kali uses GNOME

user136984
1:39 PM
And I wish my keyboard would type faster! It can't keep up with me! :D

so it makes no sense

@Zacharee1 It's a sort of circle.

No, it says the Kali forums won't let him post 'cause he can't get through the captcha. They probably have one of those "paste the output of this command" things.

user136984
He probably just doesn't know what he is talking about, we should ask him to run the lsb_release -a command.

@ParanoidPanda Yes.

1:40 PM
@terdon which implies he has an issue with Kali, which makes me think he's probably using Kali. But then he says he'll be using GNOME for a while. What did he have before? GNOME is default on Kali

user136984
On the lichess site they have an awesome captcha which makes you play a final move in Chess! :D

user136984
If you win it lets you through, otherwise you are stuck there.

@ParanoidPanda That's cool.

user136984
@Zacharee1: Was it always the default? Maybe he's just got some really old version of Backtrack?

dunno

1:41 PM
@Zacharee1 I read that to mean that he'll just use it despite the very minor annoyance he's facing.

hmm
but then that makes me think he was trying to get away from GNOME
which makes even less sense

But what difference does it make what the default is? He could have installed anything.

Much confusion I sense! - Yoda, 2016
@terdon But if he installed something else, why would he not know what he's talking about?

For one thing because he's speaking a foreign language. And I don't see why you think he doesn't know. He just said that he'll be using Gnome for a while. That doesn't imply he isn't doing so now.

but his screenshot is GNOME, so why would he post that screenshot if he wasn't having problems in GNOME?

user136984
1:45 PM
I'm just downloading Ubuntu Studios now, has anyone tried it? Is it any good?

user136984
Also what exact DE does it use?

@Zacharee1 This.

@ParanoidPanda looks like GNOME

nah

1:46 PM
@Zacharee1 Why not?

:p
no, we should

He probably wouldn't get back to us though.

Funny gif here - i.imgur.com/5VrFZhT.gif
grr
ah

@Zacharee1 Huh? What's that from?

Imgur?

1:57 PM
@Zacharee1 What is it supposed to be? It's so small I can't tell.
I'm not on my desktop :)

just click it

post a HTML5 version please

it's a GIF
wat

Bye for now.

@Zacharee1 Do you have any idea how large that is?

2:00 PM
?

I'm downloading it now and it's at 4% at 3MB!

lol
why are you downloading it?

Curious. All I see here is a loading circle.

and it's only 2.4MB
oh the GIF is 63MB

@Zacharee1 nope
@Zacharee1 Yeah.

2:01 PM
click it and download the MP4 then

You know what, I'm pretty sure that's just not worth posting.

user136984
Why did someone downvote this? :(

That gif is slowing things down here.. Can we stop the onebox?

you're the chat mod

Is gnome-maps only broken on Ubuntu or is it the upstream version with the issue?

user136984
Oh dear... My dreams are getting worse and worse... Donald Trump is appearing in them more and more!

Just out of curiosity, is there a sharepoint, Google Docs like alternatives? Preferably open source...

Hello :)
@ParanoidPanda gnome maps is "broken" on every distro ! Please read this -> mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2016-July/… ... and this -> omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/07/gnome-maps-dead-end-mapquest ... you can sudo apt purge gnome-maps ... good afternoon my friend ! :)
@ParanoidPanda I compensated the downvote with an upvote just right now ! :)

user136984
2:21 PM
:)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Do you know what the ID of the upstream bug report is?

user136984
Also, are you on Tox?

@ParanoidPanda yes ... in a few minutes :)

Can someone star my last comment? That's something I'm really looking for!

user136984
:)

2:27 PM
Er, this is ironic...

what

heh

:(

user136984
2:48 PM
Does anyone know when FF48 will be released by the way?

Q: How to recover a clobbered LD_LIBRARY_PATH on Ubuntu Linux 16.04?

FrankI would like to find out how to recover a clobbered LD_LIBRARY_PATH on Ubuntu Linux 16.04. I clobbbered it a few days ago by setting the global environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /home/frankc/DevelopmentX64/Debug in the file /etc/environment and rebooting. Any help is greatly appreciated.

@NathanOsman But they fixed it in a day. That's pretty good

True.

user136984
Maybe you are imagining things.

@ParanoidPanda they're being dispersed right now :P
