1.4 million US dollars , e league championship . . . .
people be making money by playing games. . . .

@Serg You ever heard of professional soccer players?
Bunch of idiots paid offensive amounts of money to run up and down a field kicking a ball.

yes . . . those people who run around field kicking balls . . . .
2
meanwhile, I don't have money to even pay for my next semester of college

@terdon at least they use their feet to kick the ball.

9:13 AM
@Rinzwind I wish. They often also use their heads. Presumably in the vain hope that it might help them come up with an idea.

they do not use their heads to kick the ball :+)

The point is that they get paid a lot to play a game . . . .

I am facing same problem as in question

@CodeX And yet, you haven't even upvoted the question.

Thanks for the feedback! Votes cast by those with less than 15 reputation are recorded, but do not change the publicly displayed post score. xD
@terdon

@CodeX Ah! Sorry, I saw your chat rep here and assumed it was your rep on the site.

i was editing that . . .
anyway, same stuff

@CodeX did you try the linked solution?
@Serg Sorry!

9:56 AM
no worries :) we were adding same stuff

@terdon Yeah .thanks .. tried it now .. that solved the issue
at least it made nemo work.. nautilus it seems to be not working

Personally, I think that's either a bug in nautilus or ayatana/bamf daemon

seems like it

i'm probably gonna go sleep soon. Not much stuff done today though

10:14 AM
it ends with:
> Now i'm going to try to get grub working through this articles: [two ask ubuntu links]

lol that question has a lot of -1 votes

Damn it, that's the sort of question that makes me hate the EOL being off topic rule. The OP is forced to use 10.04. The people who would best know how to help them work with that are here and yet we've decided that we don't want such questions.
Can't someone at least explain that the problem is the outdated repos or something, before closing?

10:31 AM
@terdon the problem is the tr. they already are at old releases. I'll comment them.

@Takkat The tr?

@terdon the turkey mirror has issues with the old releases.

Ah. I see. Cool, thanks

Cool only if that solved the issue... ;)

That misspelling is new: Uauntu @Zacharee1
You could make an image with the aunt of Tux for that...
Pink dress and hair rollers should look nice :D

10:36 AM
@ByteCommander how did that misspelling even happen ? a and b keys are far apart on the keyboard

Uauntu? I want to too!
2

@ByteCommander 1040 Google search results for UAUNTU @.@
wy did we not hear of ot before?

i just lost a little faith in mankind again

me too

There is an issue with Stack Chat. Investigating.

10:42 AM
@Takkat How many are actually related to Ubuntu?

that's interesting, what sort of issue ?

@edwinksl I'm surprised that you still got that faith...
@Serg Maybe that we discovered Uauntu...

people in AU chat do great work, so that tends to keep the faith up a little :D

now i want to learn it
i never use linux before

Welcome, Sandro !

lol yeah welcome

Sure, one minute, I'll find the link

10:52 AM
you know i want to put my php file on the server

Actually no need for link . It's just one command , sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

ARGV!
This fly is driving me nuts!
Now it's sitting on top of my fly swatter! o.O

10:55 AM
Server or desktop doesn't matter. Both can do the same thing. You just need the right software installed.

@ByteCommander it is clearly laughing at you :(

Ha! Finally I managed to smack it. Human 1 : 0 Fly
Actually Man vs. Fly made it on TV: youtube.com/watch?v=w8eMRVycbpI

@ByteCommander I believe you meant @ARGV.

@Serg i get this error Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Why @ARGV?

10:59 AM
@ByteCommander german show? it looks interesting

> maybe run apt-get update

@ByteCommander perl style probably

@edwinksl Yes. On Tele5.

array of arguments
@terdon we're python folks, we do it sys.argv way

@Serg Oh of course, never settle for one character where three would do. The Zen of Python.

11:00 AM
no love for String[] args?

@Sandro run apt-get update first, if that still gives you error, post an answer on the site and people will love into it
@edwinksl nuuuuu . . . .

Reading package lists... Done
wht happened
what did i do

@ByteCommander i just watched a man vs fly video, hilarious although i don't understand any german. i think you are ready to challenge fly too

I think i installed graphical ubuntu
where can i access it

Oh holy NOOOOO!
That fly brought its friends! >.<
Now there's another one.

11:04 AM
RIP Byte

fly reminded me of a particular breaking bad episode

@Serg RIP fly #2
I think...

11:21 AM
@ByteCommander they shall return from the depth of hell to haunt your dreams . . . . or your room at least

As long as they don't start to dance on my head (or any other part of me), I'm fine.

ok guys, im out probably
gonna go take a nap
o/

good night Serg

@Serg i think i installed desktop how can i login in

@ByteCommander he was up all night
it's morning

11:39 AM
Shall I say good morning when he goes to bed?
Anyway, let's use UGT.

i see our headache guy is awake

with no more headache

Seen Uauntu already?

yes

11:46 AM
lol

Or like this

that's the CP reporter, not an aunt

finally i could find this u tube tutorial
i install desktop
vncserver
gnome-panel
now the problem is that i cant run this command
vncserver
it says this command isn't avaiable

@Zacharee1 That is Aunt Arctic

but she's not an aunt

12:01 PM
I don't care... ;P

that's fascinating @edwinksl - I use python3 as a calculator all the time so good to know!

yeah it is surprising on first sight that 8//0.4 doesn't give what is expected

"As you and khelwood already noticed, 0.4 cannot be exactly represented as a float. Why? It is two fifth (4/10 == 2/5) which does not have a finite binary fraction representation."

seems to me the take home message is // is fragile when used on floats
floats as in the float type in python

yeah

12:36 PM
but i don't think that is explicitly mentioned in most tutorials about python i read

import decimal haha ^_^ long live python

rare to see 11 upvotes in 1 hour for a python SO question

1:17 PM
@Serg you here ?
@edwinksl - can you help me ?
My root environmental variables are set to CC=icc and CXX = icpc. Does this mean that my kernel utilities such as X are built with icc ?

@gansub By default?

@BharadwajRaju what do you mean by default ?
In my bashrc as root I have CC = icc and CXX = icpc
does that mean /usr/bin/X uses intel libraries ?

@gansub As in, on a fresh install

no existing Ubuntu

Are you using Ubuntu?

1:20 PM
take a look at Knud Larsen's comment herer
» /usr/bin/X : error while loading shared libraries : libimf.so ... « : The X server or part of it seems to be compiled / recompiled with the Intel icc compiler. In your other posting unix.stackexchange.com/questions/298109/… you mention /opt///[intel]/ ... Possible solution : Make a copy of libimf.so to /usr/lib/Knud Larsen 54 mins ago

Ubuntu (like nearly every other distro) has GCC by default.

yes I know that
but I have in root CC = icc
and CXX = icpc
how does that kernel utilities ?

Also, 1. X is not a kernel utility, 2. AFAIK only GCC can build the Linux kernel

2
Q: X windows hanging during Ubuntu boot

gansubI was able to figure out the cause of this problem I was having Unable to boot Ubuntu 14.04. The X server is refusing a connection. I was able to boot by pressing shift continuously and I was able to boot but it does not open the graphics display of Ubuntu trusty. I tried sudo service lightdm r...

@BharadwajRaju - take a look at Knud Larsen's comment
X is a service on top of the kernel right ?

Well, Ubuntu is most probably not ICC-compiled. Can you post /root/.bashrc and /root/.profile?
X is an application on top of the kernel. By that definition, every app runs on top of the kernel

1:26 PM
it is another machine
so can be X be compiled with icc as Knud Larsen is suggesting ?

@gansub I don't know :( Never really looked into either X internals or ICC.

where can I find how X is built ?

1:44 PM
which cpanel is free in linux

Ubuntu has rescued skype ?

wtf serg you are back already?

i can't fall asleep
spend like 2.5 hours lying in bed

@Serg - did you see Knud Larsen's comment ?

1:48 PM
try reading manpages
that always makes me sleepy

hahaha >_<

@edwinksl People fear change, even if it is for the better.

he is saying that X is being partially built with icc
hence move libimf.so to /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib
In my root .bashrc I have CC=icc and CXX=icpc
could this have caused a recompile of X using icc ?

@gansub no i didn't. i don't get notifications for that post. I'll go check it

@gansub Ubuntu doesn't actively recompile anything.

1:55 PM
but could an update have caused the recompile ?
software update

@gansub No. Ubuntu updates using pre-compiled binaries
The only distro (I think) that recompiles on update is Gentoo

then why does X ask for libimfo.so ?

somehow it doesn't seem right

@Serg after reinstalling OS tomorrow can I still icc anc icpc as values for CC and CXX ?

@gansub I think this is because something changed the CC, CXX and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH

1:59 PM
Ubuntu by default comes with gcc, gnome c compiler . icc if i am not mistaken has to be installed

@Serg It's GNU C Compiler
AFAIK icc is nonfree, isn't it?

@BharadwajRaju thanks

@BharadwajRaju - nothing changed it

@BharadwajRaju probably free but proprietary license

I use icc and icpc for all my compilations including python

2:00 PM
nonfree as in not-freedom
@gansub Python isn't compiled

@BharadwajRaju - I compiled python source code
are you sugggesting I did not do it ?

@gansub No, but as a fellow Python programmer, I was not aware of such a thing. Can you point me to this tool, please?

@BharadwajRaju - no i mean
i downloaded the python source code which creates the executable python

@BharadwajRaju he installed his own python, he's not using default one

and compiled it with icc

2:03 PM
Ah, I see
OK
But unless X was manually recompiled, nothing could have changed

right

ok, sleep attempt #2. bye again

@BharadwajRaju
I agree with you
it was not manually recompiled

I installed ftp but i don't know what is my username and password

@Sandro Try your Ubuntu username and password

2:05 PM
I just have password
what is my ubuntu username

Does anyone know how to use /dev/mem to read memory?

The one you chose at install. If you don't know/remember, run whoami, which tells you who you are

I can do something like dd if=/dev/mem bs=8 count=8 | hexdump -C, but that gives me the first line
how do I get memory further down?

Try of=something?

That just prints it to a file, but it wont change what I get

2:07 PM
@BharadwajRaju it's says root
and when i trying to log in i get fail login

Are you running in a root shell? Or are you running sudo whoami?

yes im running on SSH EXPLORER
and installed ftp there

@Sandro why not just remove the server edition and install the normal one

im new to ubuntu, can u tell me how, or at least is there a step by step tutorial about your suggestion
i need to run a php site so quickly
on my server
i installed lamp

@CodeX Sometimes that's not possible, also, how do you know Sandro is running Server?

2:15 PM
and now need ftp to sne ddata

@Sandro here is desktop version ubuntu.com/download/desktop/…
@BharadwajRaju because he said so many hours ago

@CodeX I see. But that shouldn't make a difference...

what do u mean about desktop version
i have a server
and server is running
i access to server with ssh explorer
as root

I am lost now

I absolutely don't know what u say

2:18 PM
@Sandro Logging in as root is very dangerous. Use sudo as a normal user.

it's a student project
don't worry
just need a result

so all you want to accomplish is to make a webserver ?

@Sandro Still, best practices and the fact that most software is designed for sudo
A webserver is fairly simple

Q: How do I grant different permissions for each user?

trueCamelTypeSo, I've been using Linux for a few years now, and I really should know this answer, but I'm having trouble finding it. Specifically I've been using Debian based distro's....mostly Ubuntu. If I have a server, that has more than three users, how do I set a different set of permissions to a file ...

@Sandro Whether you need a result or not, compromising system security is a no-no, even for a 'student project'
ask any of my comp sci professors that :P

2:52 PM
@edwinksl seems I have a curse today that something works for me & everyone else but not for the OP - sorry for passing it on to you (thanks for adding the GUI method to that post +1 for that)

@Zanna i can't repro what OP saw too
my apt --dry-run fetched a ton of stuff

ditto

i suspect OP didn't apt update :P

yeah I suggested that to them
I'm really baffled by this askubuntu.com/a/802984/527764 for me atom does this ootb and one of the commenters explicitly says the same, but OP can't get it to happen :(

i use atom too and my atom behaves the same as yours

2:55 PM
<3 atom

so OP's sources.list is messed up

argh how'd that happen

darkness overtook their system, and consumed their /etc/apt/sources.list file

haha ^_^
i hope we're about to find out because I just got an accept on it
haha I just got 'Enthusiast' badge on meta, didn't even realise I'd been visiting that consistently

lots of drama on meta though; i can see why one would visit it consistently ;)

3:06 PM
I want in.

me too

me too, what's the drama?

the one i remember reading was about tags

Serg's translation post proved controver[ts]ial
gotta go work again :) later xx

...[ts]...?
@Zanna That hurts.

3:10 PM
not sure which one it is @jokerdino my spelling is not up to the task ;)

Oh, it's controversial.

thanks :D

I thought you were doing a [sic].

@jokerdino That's commonly known as the cop-out character class :P
4

lol ^_^

3:11 PM
lmao cop-out char class, i am stealing that phrase

:)

Kill the joke for me, please.

Like, how do you spell bureaucracy? Easy: bur[aeouiy]*cracy
@jokerdino A cop-out is (among other things) someone who choses the easy way out. So using a character class for spelling could be called a cop-out.

Wah, I expected something more.

Tsk, not that kind of cop.

3:21 PM
I just let my fingers do the spelling. They are better at it than my mind.

4:15 PM
where can i find ftp user and password

4:32 PM
@Sandro usually it's configured at the config level, or it's an existing user on the system if the FTP server users PAM authentication with the system's user database

\o/
askubuntu.com/questions/802499/… could use a cleanup on the comments :-)

Ah.

it scaled the container with the content ;)

6:14 PM
Yeah, I would say something went wrong there :)

@Mateo welcome to the wonderful weird world of display scaling.
NitroShare had no end of problems with this.

I remember the retina thing ;)
that was fun just trying to force my macbook to display a retina screen to test

It doesn't play nice with Chrome Remote Desktop, I'll say that much :D

Now I've got Traefik up and running and communicating with the etcd cluster...

@HenryWHHackv2.0 ERROR CODE 666: BOOM

@HenryWHHackv2.0 prove it. it's a very poor question that is vague about creating a debian package.

@ThomasWard It's not off topic?

English needs to be translated into English there...

6:42 PM
Hello, and welcome to Ask Ubuntu! It is unclear what you are trying to do here. Can you add to your question what you are trying to ultimately achieve, and what you're trying to do? If your question is how to build Debian packages from source code, you may need to review the Ubuntu Packaging Guide to understand how Debian packages work. — Thomas Ward ♦ 41 secs ago
it'd be "Unclear what you're asking"
not offtopic
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Case in point any of my historic questions about how to create packages or packaging-related things
though those're mostly in IRC logs now
And 16.04.1 just came out.... so direct upgrade is now supported. — Android Dev 1 hour ago
@AndroidDev The upgrade path isn't opened yet. So direct upgrade without do-release-upgrade -d is not going to work. Hence why do-release-upgrade and teh GUI equivalents don't show 16.04 as an LTS-only upgrade target yet

i used sudo mysql service start
and get start: Job failed to start
what should i have to do

@ThomasWard it isn't? I thought it opened yesterday
@Sandro there should be a command it tells you to run to see the error

what is that command

it should tell you

stop: Unknown instance:
start: Job failed to start
used sudo service mysql restart

6:50 PM
@Zacharee1 do-release-upgrade -c returns 'No release found"
on an updated 14.04 system.

@ThomasWard huh
weird

there was discussion about opening the path today, but the last date i heard was the 28th
same day as Wily EOL
so things settle down

that would make sense
2 days
and it begins

which reminds me, in two days, DOOM TO WILY

MUAHAHAHAHA
I really liked 15.10 though, so it's kind of sad

6:56 PM
Quickly push your Wily packages to PPAs, folks.
Soon you won't be able to.

are the archive PPAs RO?
