one of the changes involved removal of a constructor parameter in the Declaration class, ..which is kinda central to the whole thing

Tony JThe code below that I wrote for a lab works perfectly. It gives the desired output. That said, it's over 200 lines of code to reach the result. Clone is the too slow. Never use it unless you have no other choice. — sᴜʀᴇsʜ ᴀᴛᴛᴀ 34 mins ago
^^ talking about Java array's .clone() method

10:26 AM
yea... it's faster to use System.arraycopy

Well, I always have the chance to use the .clone() method :P

@Vogel612 is it though?

clone isn't native
and you get the useless stuff around it, too.

he linked to a post by Josh Bloch who ends up recommending it, if I'm reading it right

copy-constructor != System.arraycopy

10:29 AM
> You should use clone to copy arrays, because that's generally the fastest way to do it.

hmm...
let's go benchmark it.

I'm envisioning this as a conversation about a car's performance and then asking to race it to prove who's the winner

In any case, I never said it's the fastest way. At all. It's a simple, idiomatic way to copy an array (shallow), compared to what's in the OP. I honestly don't know the fastest way, and it might depend on a lot of things (JVM, version, platform, ...) — janos 11 secs ago

let me fire up something quickly

ok, but speed was not relevant. Instead of nit-picking on other answers, answerers could focus on delivering what's best for OP
oh, unexpected positive outcome:
Exactly. I remember I saw a benchmark (Not for array, that is for an individual object) where the statics changed from JVM to JVM. Trying to find it, but no need I guess. Thanks for correcting me. — sᴜʀᴇsʜ ᴀᴛᴛᴀ 1 min ago

@Jamal I disagree. While this question is not really a good fit for the site I don't consider it off-topic. The cards are fully implemented and represent the domain model of the Game Dominion. @CaptainObvious doesn't work as intended

Hi @jwill, going with your house building analogy, it's true that the building foundation should be reviewed too, but the review board might separate the reviews of different stages to specialized departments. We're the one specialized on the complete house. But as both Jamal and Vogel said, your question can be reworded to make it a better fit, by explaining more about the background. I think that's natural, to help better understand your design choices. Anyway, I sense this discussion might get long, please come join us for a chat: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/8595/the-2nd-monitorjanos ♦ 31 secs ago

@ZaheerAhmed while the reasoning is correct, and this question really is better off on Code Review, the reason you vote-to-close with is incorrect. Just because a question is on topic on another site, it's not neccessarily off-topic on this site. Instead of "belongs to Code Review" you should instead VTC as "too broad" and flag for migration. — Vogel612 51 secs ago

hmm I may not even reach the 30k character limit, which isn't even the limit anymore.

@Vogel612 - that benchmark is frustrating me. I am getting a Java JIT issue where it is essentially compiling down the tests to no-ops. .... completing in 0 nanoseconds ;-)

that explains the significant difference...
could I leverage the checks to prevent the no-op compilation?

I did that, but it seems the checks are being compiled down as well ;-0
There are some testing problems you have, like for example, each sample size is getting a different function to test... you are not testing the same function multiple times, but different functions each time.

so the lambda bodies should be extracted to methods that can be invoked?

This is the main method I am currently running, for example:
    UBench bench = new UBench("Array Copying Comparisons");

    Function<int[],int[]> syscopy = data -> {
        final int[] result = new int[data.length];
        System.arraycopy(data, 0, result, 0, data.length);
        return result;
    };

    Function<int[],int[]> arraycopy = data -> {
        return Arrays.copyOf(data, data.length);
    };

    Function<int[],int[]> arrayclone = data -> {
        return data.clone();
    };

    for (int limit : LIMITS) {
        final int[] sample = new int[limit];
Note, I added in a third Arrays.copyOf test
I have to run, got a few hours of driving to do.

@Mat'sMug re no-op overrides...

don't tell me they're required?

they are

gosh what a funny UI framework
why?

oh you have no idea

lol

2:08 PM
that's actually a Java thing
aside from the fact that the interfaces usually suck big time
have you seen the confirm dialog?
it returns an int.

WinForms has a DialogResult enum

which would've been applicable if at creation of that class, java actually had had enums

aw

@Vogel612 Don't we need to graduate first?

enums are available since Java 5
and swing is older than that
@Mast SO swag != CR swag

@Mat'sMug actually the "share your story" swag

@Vogel612 they never made a "revamped" framework?

JavaFX

I also got a swag form for #SOreadyToHelp :)

2:12 PM
did I mention that JavaFX requires you to implement Application as entry point, which jerks your code back into the static context?

hmm

the only sensible way to do good UI in Java is going through OpenGL...
because swing is fugly and JavaFX kills your application architecture
Interestingly swing defines a WindowStateChangeListener
which only has a single method.
but that change-listener isn't fired on close.....
MouseListeners are even worse.

what's that? oh look! it's my thoughts of ever writing UI code in Java - leaving my mind forever!
5

the only way to override a single method of these is to introduce an intermediary interface with default no-ops or an abstract class
let's say Desktop UI for Rich Clients
oh yea, there's awt....

So anyway I thought I'd leave a few future-proofing recommendations to your code :-)

2:21 PM
so many problems, so little solutions :(

another nice zombie kill by our rare JavaScript reviewer Joseph:
0
A: AngularJS inheriting from a base directive

Joseph the DreamerAnything that makes each instance of a directive different should be delegated somewhere higher up. You make a "wrapper" directive. Generic logic stays down the hierarchy, while specific logic wraps and provides for it. Assuming each of your directive has a hierarchy of something like: page -> ...

@janos He's on a roll.
If I read it correctly, it has some very good design advice.

@Mast I hope so!
we really need more JavaScript reviewers

3:16 PM
if JS is so popular, then why isn't JS the top tag?

@Mat'sMug There's just a lot of zombies.

cuz java and c# devs know about maintainable code.
7

and JS devs know about broken code huh

meh. they haven't even properly defined that yet.
3

lol

3:18 PM
the whole js ecosystem is moving too fast to get clear readings

I may start reviewing JS... but then I'd have to use it more and first read some good code in it
and I don't like js..

I don't like JS, but I get rep from it.
I should try to review it more.

Our amount of Java zombies is growing as well.

hmm...

3:23 PM
But overall we aren't doing too bad. Remember our total amount of questions is growing quite rapid as well.

and the amount of reviewers is, too
just at a slightly slower pace

@jwill hi J Will, looks like 3 users already voted to reopen your question, so it will that will happen probably pretty soon. In the meantime, if you could improve it following the hints by RubberDuck and Vogel, that would be awesome

@Vogel612 Ok, I can add some more details about the game. I put a link to the game description, rules, etc. Is that normally not enough?

4:37 PM
Links can rot. It's much appreciated if you could write one or two paragraphs

@RubberDuck I did add one implementation, but I could add a couple more implementations for the other classes. Would it be best if i took the question down until i finished them?
@Vogel612 ok, thanks vogel!

no need to take down, you can just add them

@janos but it may be a while till i get to it

if you keep it there, you might actually get some reviews in the meantime
maybe not, we don't have a lot of Scala reviewers
it doesn't matter much either way

Could someone please review my application briefly and tell me what was the worst mistake in my code. I am interested in improving myself but it's hard for me...

@CaptainObvious I'm not surprised he got rejected...
Code behind link is fixed it seems though
I'm well aware that everyone needs to learn, but I'd cringe if that code was in my codebase

.... and I closed it back: I don't think it's reviewable without the problem description
his main question is "what was the worst mistake in my code", and I think it will have a lot to do with the specs

@janos There's a lot of mistakes in that code.

This user just posted an off-topic question which instantly got -2 and went RBA. May start trolling in response, that's kind of his MO.
Keep an eye out.

@Mast It's not too broad, it off-topic. There is a specific site here for code reviews. — rmaddy 43 secs ago
