10:02 AM
sixty-four GB RAM modules? Holy bajesus.

@tombull89 Cisco UCS B460 M4

I saw the Lego Movie on saturday which was excellent. It's one of those films you'd have to watch a few times to get all the references

Dan
@TomO'Connor I would like 10 of those, please.

@Chopper3 I got Second Assault. The only one I like is Caspain Border. Oman - I do not like the standstorm. Metro is still a clusterfuck. Firestorm is just full of snipers.

@RobM once I read a rage comic where the it guy goes, "so we bought the new domain" and the boss goes "is that an HTML5 domain?"

10:08 AM
@tombull89 the sandstorm is amazing though - SA has finally got me excited about BF4

@strugee exactly the sort of leadership we all know and love!

annotated "I hate when management learns new buzzwords"

@Chopper3 Naval Assault is the big one for me - 2142 is still my most-played Battlefield game to date with 250 hours logged, mainly due to Titan Mode. With Titan Mode "re-imagined" in Naval Assault I am looking forward to it. ETA 18th March, I think.

I'm still looking forward to Watch_Dogs, and Thief is out this week too

@tombull89 not read much about that, I played a LOT of 1942 - often as a sub, hoping something similar

Dan
10:10 AM
@Chopper3 Once I have some capital I think I'll be treating myself to a next gen

@RobM I don't want Thief, I already have Dishonored :)

I love dishonored

@Dan the PS4 is SO well put together, feels like it was designed by one person, best controller ever too - if you could only switch off the light...
@RobM me too, didn't like the dlc though

@Dan Why stop at 10?

Dan
@Chopper3 I'm tempted

10:11 AM
DLC? didn't see that @Chopper3 what was bad about it?

@Dan been reduced a bit too - such a lovely physical design and the UI is great

Dan
@TomO'Connor Any more than 3 terrabits of bandwidth is just silly

@RobM just didn't feel like an extension of the main game, like a complete training level

ah... what a shame

@Dan I don't know what I'd do with that much power.

Dan
10:13 AM
@TomO'Connor Serve 4K porn?

@Dan not if you're an ISP. or Google.

Dan
@strugee Nope - up to 10 is absolutely fine, any more is just gratuitous

My website is down.
So's the colocation company's website.

@Dan we've been doing 4k streaming trials using h.265/HEVC, not that impressed yet

Dan
10:14 AM
@Chopper3 Is that the one that's meant to be able transmit 1080p at half the current bandwidth or whatever? What hasn't impressed you

@Chopper3 viva VP9!

@Dan 26% it is

Dan
@Chopper3 Sounds impressive! So is it the 265 you're not keen on, or 4K in general?

@strugee we helped design HEVC, can't really turn around and use something else can we :)

@Chopper3 what's that? streaming protocol?

10:16 AM
@Dan both really, I prefer high-frame-rate (115fps ideally) 2k over 29.95/25/24fps 4k but really I'm just not happy with the trancoding engines at the moment
@strugee no, our labs contributed towards the spec of HEVC

Dan
@Chopper3 Fair enough - I still query the relevance of 4K on domestic TV, but I did see a stupid huge £35k 4k in curries and that was nice

@Chopper3 I don't know what HEVC is

@Dan me too - especially given 8k isn't that much further away and is proper game changing, 4k is a half-way-house that's not worth it
@strugee sorry, it's the proper name for h.265, the main open-source competitor of vp9

nvm. now I do

sounds like 520p vs 1080p all over again

Dan
10:18 AM
@Chopper3 Yep, though I think they'll always be chasing the movement from CRT SD to LCD HD and I don't think we're going to see that kind of difference anytime soon

@Chopper3 H.265 isn't open source. it contains patents.

Dan
@strugee He never said it was?

@RobM but 2k really is a major step up, overall, not on a per-pixel basis, over SD, and 8k is just amazing, has to be seen to be believed, it adds a 3d feel to everything, like a bit retina display, but 4k just seems like a bit-but-not-enough-better

Dan
@strugee Cos you're new and seem cool, I'll let you into a secret - @Chopper3 knows two things. How to make women throw up in their own shoes and video streaming ;)
5

@strugee erm..ok, good point, being a bit biased here :)

10:20 AM
mutters something angry about the w3c's patent policy being upheld
@Dan yes he did

Dan
@strugee I know, I went and looked and hoped nobody would pick me up on it. I thought you'd responded to him saying they'd contributed

> h.265, the main open-source competitor

Dan
@strugee Yes yes, no need to rub it in

what to do after installing windows 7
?

never been too worried about patents (note I don't mean patent trolling).

10:21 AM
sorry, we sent at the same time

Dan
@Utkarsh Updates? Serious question?

@Utkarsh remove it and get a real system

@Utkarsh format c:

@strugee Like?

Dan
@strugee Agreed, Windows 8.1 is great

10:22 AM
delete system32

@Chopper3 mad or what?
@RobM mad?

@Dan seconded, love 8.1 - or server 2012r2

@Dan done the updates. now?

@Utkarsh GNU/Linux or a BSD flavor
some *NIX system

Dan
@Utkarsh I dunno, crack and hookers?
@strugee I think he wants an OS to do actual work on

10:23 AM
@Utkarsh so you've come from ask ubuntu, to ask about w7....I smell troll blood

@Dan WINE

@strugee why are you not writing unix fully?
@Dan viruses and trojans?

if you're desperate, VMs

@Utkarsh can I recommend OS/2

@Chopper3 no man! i love both

10:24 AM
OS/2 is the real deal

Dan
@Utkarsh Wouldn't know, not had to deal with one in years

@Chopper3 see my profile why i hate linux

Dan
How about Vax VMS?

@Utkarsh ah yes, we have a troll folks, feel free to use the ignore button ok

@Utkarsh UNIX is a very convoluted name, historically speaking. and because I feel like it. it doesn't really matter

10:25 AM
!!google vax vms

@Dan our cleaner was using one of those just yesterday

Dan
@Chopper3 I like Dyson

no bot?

@Dan me too but that one washed the carpets or something - remember me moaning about the noise?

Dan
@strugee I thought *NIX was short for "Unix derived / unix style?"
@Chopper3 Ah, clever

10:26 AM
@Utkarsh SU only

PIZZA! time bye everyone

Dan
Jane sent me an e-mail with a cleaning service - I replied asking if she could find out if they'd dress up how I wanted and to send pictures of the maids.

@Utkarsh right, that's all very nice and all but off you fuck

@Dan yes. it is. also, technically the name UNIX is a trademark of the Open Group (SUSv3, POSIX). so *NIX is theoretically to avoid copyright infringement.

Dan
Anyone, @strugee, I don't think I've seen you before?

10:27 AM
@Dan ask them if they can clean via email

Dan
@Chopper3 I might just move to a hotel

@tombull89 technically, our bot is a fork from the JS chatroom ;p

@Dan Lawyerbot. Gonna sue your ass for improper use of the UNIX term.

ach, he's gone. I was gonna suggest BeOS

@strugee: If you're going to use BeOS, might as well run haiku

10:29 AM
@Dan yep. I'm new here.

Dan
@strugee I have to check, I suck at names and people change their names too

@JourneymanGeek yeah, that's what I meant. it's all in the family

Dan
Will people think I'm a total twat if I buy this

People might think so anyway?

10:31 AM
(Thats actually pretty cool)

Dan
@JourneymanGeek Fair point

Pfft. I had a 8GB sandisk cheap jobby that went through the washing machine, still work OK.

@tombull89:I have a little imation that went through a washing machine, fell apart, and then was glued back together. Twice.

Dan
@tombull89 I didn't say I needed it

@Dan I think you're a twat for even considering it. no offense.

10:33 AM
@Dan why do you want it?

when would you possibly bring a USB drive 200m underwater?

I sometimes have buyers guilt. Buy stuff I don't need (but want) and then regret it for a bit afterwards.

@Dan this is you

Dan
@tombull89 Just looks cool and is Corsair, USB3.0 and big enough

Dan
10:35 AM
@strugee It just looked rugged - I do have a habit of breaking things, dropping things and leaving things in the washing machine

ah you're fine
I just like being condescending on the Internet

Dan
@strugee I think we all do

@Dan I got a sandisk usb 3 stick the other month, man it's quicker than I really need to be honest

There was a rugged JCB phone I saw on Ars Technica recently...I though it looked quite good and something my dad would use.
@strugee no, really? You don't say.

I'd link you to the xkcd that was referencing but I can't be bothered

10:36 AM
@tombull89 Those things are effectively indestructible, i seem to recall

Dan
@Chopper3 I have a pair of old Sandisk ones and they're dire.

@tombull89 shocker

@Chopper3 mind your language please

Dan
Hahahaha
@Utkarsh Do one, prick.

@Utkarsh this is a Server Fault chat room, have fun with that

10:41 AM
He was removed.
For being a douchebag.

he's back

Dan
Eliminated

Evidently.

yeah idk why I said that it was pretty obvious. probably for the quasi-dramatic retort

utkarsh.page4.me/index.html Ugly as fuck website, too.

Dan
10:45 AM
Just a kid presumably?
Oh, heh, yeah his profile says he's 13. Do we have an age limit for the place?

hopefully not

Yeah, needs to be at least 13.
The Comms Room is 18+ though.

He was suspended yesterday so meh. More learning experiences are needed

@tombull89 uhm

@strugee: If you're easily offended, or your parents are... not a good place to be

Dan
10:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm ringing them right now

@JourneymanGeek I called my laptop unbelievably fucked up earlier today. I'm good

Good ;p
I don't think we onebox the lube barrel any more, but.. otherwise..

The Comms Room. Rated 18+ for Language, Adult Humor, Adult Content, Adult Themes, Mild Peril and Sexual Content.
16

@tombull89 you all could get 18+ for attitude alone, not even counting vocabulary or content
starred for "mild peril"

(I donno, of all the chatrooms on SE, this is the one Utkarsh really shouldn't be on)

10:53 AM
oh yeah to be clear I'm totally on board with the decisive action I just find it funny

Should have added "childish humour" as well.

all right, nice talking with you all. I simply must sleep

Dan
11:30 AM
Just ordered that Flash Drive :D

@tombull89 rated NSFW4 :)
user image

Dan
Like it

I think we're only at 3 ;p
I've seen worse

11:51 AM
out of all the chatrooms on SE, this is the one that no-one should be on. Unless they're a sysadmin type who has seen enough of the horror to have had their mind wrenched already

Dan
That's oddly hypnotic

it is, isn't it
its also appropriate for some of the more disturbing chats here. Or some of the crappier questions.

12:08 PM
I just found that in someone's email sig. How unacceptable.

a bit weird
in a sig

Dan
@TomO'Connor Work sig?

@RobM I didn't think mail clients supported anigifs
@Dan Yeah. A supplier's intern.

Dan
@TomO'Connor Okay, that's amazing

@TomO'Connor good point. Maybe just webmail clients?

Dan
12:10 PM
When I worked at RM there was a techie at a school who started including his 1337 h4x04 username, along with teh fact he had a CCNA
Someone googled the username and found a bunch of forum posts where he posted ways around the systems...

oh dear

@Dan I have a policy of googling applicants email addresses when I get CVs

Dan
@TomO'Connor I hope nobody Googles me too hard

I did.

Dan
@TomO'Connor I know :(

12:13 PM
Jesus. I had no idea that there was actually a guy called Max Factor.
Max Factor (15 September 1872 – 30 August 1938), born Maksymilian Faktorowicz, was a Polish businessman. He was the founder of cosmetics giant Max Factor & Company, he largely developed the modern cosmetics industry and popularised the term make-up in noun form based on the verb. Early life Factor, of Jewish descent, was born in ZduÅ„ska Wola, in Poland to Abraham Faktorowicz (1850/52–before 1938) and Cecylia Tandowska. His mother died in 1874 and his father, a hard-working grocer, rabbi or textile mill worker (depending upon the source), could not afford a formal education for his...

Dan
Hah, no way. Awesome name

Max Mcauley Power (born 27 July 1993) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for League One club Tranmere Rovers. Playing career Power joined the Tranmere Rovers youth set-up at the age of eight and has captained the club at every age group except the first team. A former student at Wirral Grammar School for Boys, after impressing in the Tranmere Rovers Reserve team he was awarded a professional contract in May 2011. Manager Les Parry was confident Power had a bright future in the game, but warned the youngster about his aggression. He compared him to Joss Labadie, another yo...
Similarly awesome name.

Dan
I hear he got it from a hairdrier

@Dan hah

12:19 PM
hah

"Homer to the Max" is the thirteenth episode of The Simpsons' tenth season. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on February 7, 1999. In the episode, Homer discovers that a television show broadcasting in Springfield, Police Cops, has a hero also named Homer Simpson. He is delighted with the positive attention he receives because of the show. However, when the television character is changed from a hero to a bumbling idiot, Homer is mocked and taunted by those he knows, so he changes his name to "Max Power" to rid himself of the negative attention. He gains new frie...

@HopelessN00b I really wanted to find that episode predated the footballer's birth

@TomO'Connor Yeah, pity. Although, in that episode Homer does say he got the name off a hair dryer. Maybe the footballer's parents were readers of fine plug-in appliance as well.

1:07 PM
@MichaelHampton ARRGH!

@ewwhite You tried to use Ubuntu?

Good morning

@MichaelHampton that FHS question is stupid

Extra bold coffee was the way to go this morning.

@MichaelHampton I woke up to that question and had to face palm.

1:11 PM
@ewwhite It is? I didn't think it was stupid, it's just not something you can do right now. Not with RHEL 6. You can do it with RHEL 7.

good morning

@MichaelHampton dude is just going to break his stuff.

@ewwhite I'm sure he will, especially if he uses Ubuntu

but outside of embedded systems, I'm not impressed by people trying to make their install as minimal as possible

@ewwhite Buy more disks, they're cheap?

1:14 PM
even my EL6 installs are reasonably small

@ewwhite Functionality is overrated.

Yeah, but if you have 300 of them....then you start thinking about things like this.
Because the alternative is dedup, and we all know that doesn't work!

hmm...

@MichaelHampton Dedupe works fine. It's supposed to reduce the amount of storage space it takes to hold your data. blowing away all your data is one way to accomplish that.

1:30 PM
Hi Ed.... [produce client] has a lease tenant moving in and they have requested a static public ip address for their network. I looked at the current NAT setup and we would like to move the SSH access to your Produce PRO server from 12.xx.43.140 to 12.xx.43.141 so we can free up the address to assign to them. Will that work for you?

Dan
Why not give them 141?

This client built a new warehouse and brought in AT&T fiber...

Oh jeeeeez.

so they only have a /29
(which is just stupid....)
this is Cisco gear, so they're port mapping as well...
and that messes up SNAT for me
so I connect to server on .141, but its outbound traffic comes from .138
additionally, .138 has no reverse PTR...
so this:
# mailq
                /var/spool/mqueue (5 requests)
-----Q-ID----- --Size-- -----Q-Time----- ------------Sender/Recipient-----------
s1RCkjaa031744    67309 Thu Feb 27 07:46 <rontt@bangbros.com>
                 (Deferred: 421 4.7.1 : (DNS:NR) postmaster.info.aol.co)
                                         <roundlakeproduce@aol.com>
so what's the lesson here? Use IPv6? Always request more than a /29 if you're stuck with IPv4? Don't portmap? Hire better consultants?
(I won't go into the internal IP scheme change from 10.1.1.x to 192.168.100.x during the facility move)

Don't hand out your precious IPv4 addresses to third parties?

1:35 PM
@MichaelHampton You'd agree than no small/medium business in a greenfield installation should settle on a /29 from their ISP, right?

Morning folks.

A lot of my clients will seek out ISPs without asking me, and they get /30 allocations
@DanilaLadner yo

@ewwhite I'd be asking the ISP tough questions about their IPv6 plans. And yes, nobody should be getting anything less than a /29 if they can possibly avoid it. Though even this won't be possible soon.

sup @DanilaLadner

How is it going?

1:37 PM
I'd imagine that most small businesses don't know what to ask for in regards to internet connectivity. They just know they want them some internet

@MichaelHampton most of the ISPs are not being transparent about it.

@MichaelHampton The IPv6 question is valid.
Comcast still won't hook me up at home
but the client I'm visiting today has 200Mb Comcast and has IPv6

@ewwhite Did you check the banner at www.comcast6.net? If you hit that site from home it will give you local status.

Your IP address is 50.148.40.99 - Your CMTS is ready for IPv6
@MichaelHampton when I asked on the phone yesterday, they said no.

Your CMTS is not supported at this time.
@ewwhite If you're seeing that, you ought to be getting it very shortly

1:39 PM
woot!

Probably within a few weeks

is port mapping bad?

Define "port mapping". Is this one of those Cisco oddities?

in this context, it's an ASA firewall or a Cisco router... client has 5 usable IP addresses. Typically, I configure these as 1:1 NAT... static inbound and outbound. Instead, client did portmapping/forwarding, where one IP is used by multiple inbound server connections, distinguished by port.

Motherfucker. avaya wants $3k for a 30-channel SIP license for our PBX
license
for a SIP trunk

1:42 PM
but the downside is that the source NAT outbound traffic comes from the firewall's IP

do they have customers who buy PBX'es with out any licenses for external calls????
this makes me furious

@RobM Even some big businesses don't know any better. The one I work for, for example. They just know they want bandwidth, and know they don't want to pay for it.

phone systems are licenced out the wazoo. I'm surprised you don't need to buy an individual licence for each individual key you want to work on a user's dial pad

@HopelessN00b I want faster Youtube!!

@HopelessN00b too true

1:45 PM
@ewwhite More like "we don't want to pay for bandwidth. Can we possibly block the internet, and keep using these T1's until 2050?"

@ewwhite OK, that's the common scenario. Nothing unusual there. And it's bad, but only because NAT is bad.

...followed by the inevitable "why does it take our users 15 minutes to open up our 150 MB Excel spreadsheets from across the WAN?"

@MichaelHampton I'm pretty fixed on the one-to-one NAT arrangement... mainly so that the infected PC situation doesn't break the exchange server's ability to send mail

@ewwhite Yeah, the mail server really needs its own public IP address, shared with nothing else

@ewwhite one-to-one is a luxury sometimes

1:48 PM
Produce servers are that way, too... many send mail

not every ISP will gladly give you more than one IP.. this is why port mapping is used out there

Dan
@pauska Indeed, I don't know of many places that can do 1:1

and there are other services... (EDI transmissions, etc.)
@pauska when ever I portmap on a cisco, it impacts source-NAT. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

@ewwhite impacts how

@pauska the outbound traffic of portmapped/port-forwarded servers comes from the firewall's IP.

1:54 PM
Have anyone dealt with Cogent guys, trying to consider signing a contract with them.

@DanilaLadner of course
depends on where you are... but their pricing is super easy
What are you doing?

our file server just BSODed

100MB fiber to ethernet hand off symetrical
Jersey City

@DanilaLadner So an L2 metro ethernet.
is this at new job?

yeah, new gig

1:56 PM
I've brought up about 20 of these...
so if you're "on-net", Cogent is pretty much everywhere.
in Chicago and NY, it was $1000 + $500/mo per location
so to get from my office to 350 Cermak...
or to another on-net location
they'll give you a switch or VLAN info for the handoff.

Dan
@ewwhite How wouldn't it - if the source IP was the internal IP then how would that work?

i got 1730$
a month for 3 years no installation fee

@Dan Use the example of: 12.xxx.43.138 as the firewall IP. and 12.xxx.43.141 as the IP with port forwarding rules.
if I connect outbound from a server accessed via 12.xxx.43.141, it would show me as coming from 12.xxx.43.138
@DanilaLadner one location... $1000. + $500+ for the other location
it's a little higher than the last time, but that's in-line

what this mean "$1000. + $500+ "
1500?

Cogent would always say $1000 for the first POP. And $500 for any additional
so headquarters and 3 additional locations that are already lit would be $1000 + $500 + $500 + $500.
see the breakdown in your quote... maybe pricing is slightly higher now.
anyway, Cogent isn't the most reliable

2:03 PM
It's also New Jersey.

fiber cuts... core networking equipment errors... Lots of ~45-minute outages.
@MichaelHampton I had Cogent in my Chicago and NJ/NY locations
worst outage was 4 hours... mid trading-day
didn't impact Chicago to NY, but it broke our office to 350 Cermak... so we still couldn't trade

morning

G'day, eh?

I shouldn't open /r/sysadmin until after my first coffee. It's going to be the death of my comment karma... reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1z22sd/…

@DanilaLadner help?

2:08 PM
@ewwhite Other options we have are shit
Xo, MassComm, Reliance Global
all resellers pretty much.
They resell Verizon, ATT
mostly

@Basil Interpretive dance? You owe me a new keyboard.

I did Cogent + Reliance/Globalcom for dual 100Mb to NY for a few years.
Globalcom was primary, COgent was secondary
again, Cogent was fine within a metro area... just make sure you have another means to get to where you need to go?
All Cisco gear? HSRP.

yeah, cisco gear i bought 2900 -> 5520 -> 3750 -> 2 2960 with POE

k. so find a second provider if you need to ensure connectivity... otherwise, Cogent is the cheapest and most convenient

@ewwhite - you should buy one of these for Mark to work with you real time

2:13 PM
@ewwhite I just heard that Reliance/Globalcom has terrible support

@DanilaLadner You know their story, right? Cogent built and bought a lot of fiber in big cities...

@ewwhite yeah, i've read that.

@DanilaLadner yes

What sort of company comes out of nowhere and suddenly buys 13 other companies?

@MichaelHampton exactly...
but it's convenient
most buildings I've encountered in Chicago and NY are Cogent "on-net"

2:16 PM
Probably an NSA front company or something

@MichaelHampton haha
no kidding, they must be all are, to be honest.
@ewwhite So i just need to fight for the lower price.

@DanilaLadner you can try... it's been 18 months since I've dealt with them

Thanks man.

Just got this...

@MichaelHampton It's going to be crusty...

2:31 PM
@pauska Wow, Windows really needs a lot of space these days, eh?

@DanilaLadner If I want to go fully back into finance, I may have to lean on you...

Reading that made me sad.

@ewwhite If you ever want to go back to finance, just come talk to us. We'll try to restore your sanity.

@MichaelHampton It sounds so flashy... but then the reality hits.

@MichaelHampton bug.. I messed around in diskpart before going to the gui

2:38 PM
@ewwhite Sure.

I'm all about the shopping questions! serverfault.com/questions/578675/…

2:49 PM
@ewwhite Nice base.

??
yeah, it is.
I'm unqualified :)

@pauska TechEd finally booked! All the hotels around the convention center was sold out though :\

@pauska They should post those messages in KB, just to piss everyone off even further.

@MathiasR.Jessen try booking.com :)
4

@DennisKaarsemaker Shameless

2:52 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Shill!

@MathiasR.Jessen I have no shame.

@DennisKaarsemaker I believe you ;) But no, they weren't totally booked out, just no more "teched"-reserved rooms left, so had to book across town to obtain the discounted rate.
Or pay triple the rate and enjoy a master suite :D

I've never used Booking.com. @DennisKaarsemaker Do you think it would help me?

Anyone care to render an opinion on the following? Is this request from the boss-man unreasonable, or am I just being a little bitch for wanting to dent his face for sending it to me?

@ewwhite book enough and you'll become a booking genius (that's the name of our loyalty program). Then you'll finally be a genius at something :D
@HopelessN00b can't it be both? :)

@HopelessN00b depends on how many VMs.

@ewwhite a couple hundred.

I'm assuming you have no vCops or anything like that

@DennisKaarsemaker it can be both, sure.
@ewwhite Nope. Dump data with PowerShell script (or whatever), do that shit to the output.

@HopelessN00b the only thing that would annoy me was being told how to colour-code a list of priorities...
