@mojo706 So it was said it isn't ad driven. It should be. Not putting ads in lenses, but a way to get something google-esque with an ad framework integrated in to the app framework. Say I want to make a cool app for u-touch and not get paid for it. Ad funding should be an option. Maybe it still is, but ad is a hot-word so they left it alone and said it's not a thing. Just saying... A framework should be in place. It isn't. This is a way to get there from here.

I agree so long as the ads aren't distracting

We see each others points. It's probably best to let it rest now then.

the dash isn't for ads it's for search results
it just so happens that amazon ones are commercial
but if it was say, askubuntu results ....

@JorgeCastro We aren't talking dash. I was talking what if the initial foray in to amazon submissions turned in to something like the google framework and got customizable from dash. Evidently the framework is mostly already written and it would take less to make a "here's a relevant in-app ad than ever" thing.

oh oh I see

6:07 PM
How much do you think would break if I upgraded to Saucy today?

*dont

you don't already have a saucy vm? that makes me sad. i do

also it depends on what you are upgrading from

i also already have a source build recipe that builds successfully for saucy.

@hbdgaf I do have a Saucy Vm, but it's SLOW
My graphics card is awful.

6:09 PM
if i run saucy on raw hardware, it would be for a devbox not my daily driver. and i don't have a devbox again yet due to life circumsances

Yeah I don't have a devbox either...
Which is why I'm hesitant.

I have a devbox! but sadly with windows :(

i don't run anything but mainline and ppas on my daily driver.
@mojo706 then you have a problem. there's a relevant bug i'm sure.

LOL

indeed...

6:12 PM
So... I think I'll wait.
Maybe.

hehehe
school and work dictate my life

the problem with installing edge on bare metal is that i have to take an old laptop and put it on gpu intense os to do it. school is over for me, but work still is a thing for the time being.

@Seth yes wait at least for about a month and a half

@mojo706 lol.

@mojo706 that seems sane for a daily driver
has anyone else seen this or is it just me? askubuntu.com/questions/338110/…

6:15 PM
I work for experience at least thats what I tell myself because the pay is very bad

@mojo706 i work to eat

Qt really needs to work on their docs... It disgusting. I'm about ready to give up on QML and QtQuick

the qt docs are better than most.

@hbdgaf I think I'm better off

@Seth they really need more examples ported though

6:17 PM
@hbdgaf heh. Even if they are better, which I disagree on, I've been able to pick up other things with books (my preferred method). There are no QML books, and very few Qt books.

give it time. if they're not there, they'll come

@hbdgaf this is good documentation laravel.com/docs

@Seth evidently you weren't looking amazon.com/s/…

compared to qt and qml
its light years away

5 GOOD books on a topic is better than a thousand bad ones.

6:19 PM
@hbdgaf Well I did neglect to look on Amazon, but come on.. 4 books?
@hbdgaf I have yet to come across a bad book published by O'Reilly

@Seth i'ld be interested to see release date of coding software -- qt 5 and some other -- to book ratios. seems like they're doing a good job to me

@hbdgaf MS had all their docs finished by the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and at least 3 books already published. 1 year later look how many books are out amazon.com/s/…
QML has been out for at least 2 years.

MS doesn't count. they abridge their docs.
this hidden api - etc. qt fully exposes their api

@hbdgaf No they don't. They have some of the best docs I've seen. Very good.

yes. they. do.

6:26 PM
Anyhow, if I'm going to learn anything I can't be arguing with you.

if you read enough msdn posts you see that there are hidden arguments, reserved data blobs, undeclared flags, or undocumented apis. entire rootkit books are written on undocumented apis.

hehe

Yeah, there's no argument about the old docs being bad.. But the new 8 ones are quite good.

you don't write to ten percent of the population.

The main point is: Windows 8 has been out 1 year (we'll say 2 for the previews): over 10 books already. Qt has been out since when? 2005 and they only have 4 books (maybe 5)
And sure, MS gets more media attention, but 4 books in 8 years is not good.

6:30 PM
no. not correct at all

Ah, I see 8 books now.
Better

you fail at web searches if you only get 8 books. i get ten pages. qt5 specific -- it's still in beta or recently adopted. qml, it's one revision old ad people don't get it yet. qt is here to stay, from a gtk guy.

I still see no Qt 5 specifics..
I see 4 and 3
Much better than your earlier link though.

qt5 is not two years old. your argument is invalid

@hbdgaf I didn't say it was... Did I?

6:34 PM
nope

not yet, but only trolls make arguments and then say they are invalid.
or marketing managers, who are in fact trolls

If anyone is trolling it would be you.. All I said was the docs are awful.

well that escalated quickly

i made an argument. i'm not saying it's invalid...it's just an argument that can be easily debunked. now i'm calling you a troll because you called me out. end of discussion.

I must say, you have for once succeeded in making me angry.. I need to go cool down, or this will continue.

6:37 PM
no it won't. you're on ignore

@hbdgaf Whoa whoa.. You called me out.

calm down fellas

Anyway, bye.

jrg
Gentlemen!

i'm calm. if you order me to unignore i will. i think i made salient points all around.

jrg
6:40 PM
i can't order anyone, i just think that you guys should calm down, take 5 and rethink this later...? :P

by order i mean suggest from a person i might respect. i don't mean post an image from a person who might have trolled with a stallman post that already had a rebuttal from sabdfl

hehehe

@foss grats on your app making it on to webupd8 too
i'm going to play some thief3. i'ld like to solve problems, but it seems that's a non-event for the day. signing off. -- honeybadger

I apologize if I rattled you the wrong way @hbdgaf

7:04 PM
Haha that meme always makes me laugh for no reason.

Is there a question alá "Don't use the darn wubi in windows 8"?
or more like: why not using wubi in windows, and what are the alternatives?

@Braiam Well, we have this, I'm not sure if it's sufficient:
2
Q: How to boot WUBI installed Ubuntu within Windows 8?

benzodmI have Windows 8 Release Customer Preview on my laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu on it with Ubuntu Windows installer (I have always used this to install, although that was on Windows 7), it installs and asks to reboot, then immediately Windows 8 boots up. I do not have the option to choose what...

someone could dupe askubuntu.com/q/339002/169736 with this ^

Do we really need a tag?

some companies really like to block usb?

7:14 PM
It's still a relatively uncommon thing for someone to want to do, though. And we only have one question tagged with it so far. Unless there are a whole bunch of other USB blocking questions that are not duplicates, I don't see why we'd need the tag.

but, um, probally not - it only has one and it should be usb-blocking if we want it...
@EliahKagan ah, you type much faster than I do.

Ah. :)

in Ubuntu Regulators, 3 hours ago, by Braiam
system sometimes is stupid... what the heck is doing blocking tag there?

Q: Swapping <esc> and <caps lock> in a way that persists with external keyboards

evilsoupI have a file called ~/.speedswapper which contains the following: ! Swap caps lock and escape remove Lock = Caps_Lock keysym Escape = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Escape add Lock = Caps_Lock ...when I run xmodmap ~/.speedswapper, this switches the esc and Caps Lock keys. I have this line in m...

@hbdgaf cheers!

7:25 PM
@fossfreedom which app?

@fossfreedom i might have helped with that on the including binary assets question ;P glad it got to a "final" stage

yes - yes - yes! I've defeated HP and their stupid efi bios!

efi bios would be a win if we could get a locally stored key repo to be publically available. it's a short toss, but it seems impossible.

well this one was a pain - they had hard-coded to boot windows 8 from a strangely named efi file and folder - made dual booting a 'mare

7:35 PM
i mean, when you can say "here's my trusted keyfile. make my personal kernel work" with a button.
@fossfreedom understand completely. i just turned it off and booted a regular instance. it's not like there isn't a universally trusted key floating around anyway. just saying that efi could be a win if there were a way to say only trust my personal keys.

yeah agreed. This hard-coding meant the only way to boot into ubuntu was having to press F9 all the time at startup otherwise win8 always started. Try teaching my 11 year-old to do that - it will never happen.

if you could add your keys to the global key store and auto-sign things it wouldn't be an issue though would it? and you would have edge kernels booting on your desktop with no keypress?

no - there was nothing wrong with the ubuntu key - the hp laptop was ok to boot into ubuntu from F9 - just you couldnt get grub to be the default boot loader.

that makes sense. if you could add personal keys, you could add the ubu key though
it would be subject to memory snopping during process though

had to find the windows efi filename - back-it up, replace with ubuntu efi, create a grub entry to boot the backup efi to enable grub to recognise windows again. What a faff.

7:43 PM
taffer. just turn it off. it doesn't protect anything anyway since the keys are compromised now anyway. <-- no disrespect intended. it was a joke at the system, not at you

yeah - been playing with this damn laptop for two weeks and was just about to reformat it when I had a brainwave on how to do it.

i more meant that if we could do more with private key-stores that as a person, i could say only trust my personal build. assuming i'm using all open source drivers and build a monolithic kernel it seems like i should be able to sign everything myself.
i didn't but a woefully broken intel video card laptop for no reason. nvidia and ati both provide better performance, so i was skeptical. i was still hoping though.

anyway ... I can now get on and install all the edubuntu packages for my son. lets go and do something useful now :)

of course I can drop rows or colums at will, but heck! I become a mess whenever I use pseudo-complex operations
even modifying others examples is difficult...

You only need to know how to design a database. Not more..

That is a nice site :)

A client requested I touch up their logo, but all they could provide was a business card with the logo on it. As such, I had it open in Photoshop when the client asked for status update. I took a screenshot of the logo on a transparent background (which appears as a gray and white checkered pattern) before I sent it the client’s way.

CLIENT: This is great! I love the background.

ME: That background’s transparent.

CLIENT: Checkered, transparent, whatever - I like it!
LOL
