@NathanOsman you should have a nice sound system not hearing all that...

My dual-boot laptop can't load Ubuntu after some update yesterday. I can get to grub and Win7 but not Ubuntu =/
What can I do?

Black/Purple screen:
http://askubuntu.com/a/162078/169736

@Braiam Thanks, will try

12:15 AM
WTF! I just removed quiet and splash from the grub entry and it booted fine.

12:44 AM
@Braiam Yeah, it's noisy.

12:59 AM
Yay! My debian testing was broken for 15 minutes :D darn mutter don't started thanks to apt-get ignoring clutter dependencies :S

Q: Can't enable bluetooth, 12.04, Shuttle desktop

KirstenI have a home-built Shuttle desktop. I'm running 12.04. I'm confused about some very basic bluetooth truths. I just built the desktop last year, with pretty respectable components, from a Shuttle barebones system. It was my first build, and there's a lot I don't know, but I did manage to make...

Learned a lesson: always deactivate Windows before transplanting a hard drive.

@Roland I think that someone think that your answer show no efforts :D — Lucio 39 secs ago
@NathanOsman what do you mean with deactivate

@Lucio There's a special command that will deactivate your copy so you can install it on another PC.

Oh, I don't know who does those systems works :/
Thanks for telling me :)

2:46 AM
@gertvdijk LOL I have the 8560w.. it.. has problems :S

3:24 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy sometimes... is bound to happen...
ehhhh? we get badges in the meta site too?! meta.askubuntu.com/help/badges/52/enthusiast?userid=169736

we always have
@NathanOsman it depends. Mine has 3 fans, and between the built in fan control (In windows) and 2 of those fans being 200mm, and the third being a specifically low noise model, its surprisingly silent)
I think there's a tool for speed control in linux, but I mostly run linux in a VM or another box

KrishnaYesterday I have encountered one problem, when I turn on my PC it took a long time to boot. After booting it reached to command line with <initramfs> (It is unknown to me what it is) I thought it is some asking for GUI so I typed exit and ENTER. Here it comes a big issue now, It displayed one me...

7:26 AM
@NathanOsman I'm on 1 :D
who's seen @jrg?
Ohh pardon my manners. Morning, someone please ask @jrg to come to chat

8:13 AM
@mojo706 james should be safely tucked up in bed at this time in his time-zone.

@fossfreedom whats Jame's timezone?

USA

ok Thanks

8:33 AM
@karel - what's up with all your answer deletions - cleaning up?

@jrg when you do come to chat I already solved the minor problem I wanted to ask you about. But just to know. do you still use rbenv

3 hours later…
11:14 AM
In this link stackoverflow.com/help/privileges/close-questions I'm getting some garbage symbols, specifically: "If you select off-topic, you will need to select an additional sub-reason explaining why the question is off-topic." both sides of the first off-topic has ?, what are they?

2 hours later…
jrg
12:52 PM
@mojo706 yes, I do still use rbenv.

1:04 PM
@jrg my church is looking to setup a dhcp (or domain server?) the limit of the wireless boxes is around 20 users (so they need a server to manage it instead) - what was that distribution you were using to handle the awesome setup you had?

jrg
@Mateo we use zentyal.
it's a pain to deal with, but we're also looking at pfsense.
pfsense has a book on how to use it.

@jrg well if it does the trick, I'd say we mostly have phones and iproducts some various tablets/kindles connecting
setup wise? or strange quarks...

jrg
setup wise.
strange quarks is there, but mostly due to the fact that we need a real router, not a software router.
When you have a 1GB symmetrical connection to the outside, and you're actually trying to make use of it, you run into problems when you're dealing with a software router.

wow.
I don't think we have anywhere near that bandwidth

\o/ just noticed my app made it onto the front page of webupd8 \o/

jrg
1:17 PM
Again, anything with an atom CPU will be fine.

@jrg oh, so It doesn't need much resources?

jrg
Nope.
@Mateo you could theoretically run the whole network off of a netbook.
Use zentyal and the builtin WiFi card, plus the eth0 interface.

cool, thanks for the info

jrg
performance wouldn't be great, but if you have a residential line, you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

@fossfreedom you maybe should merge it with rhymbox source code, it's actually nice

1:23 PM
@Braiam I've tried small patches in the past - no joy. I would expect equal silence if I proposed something as large as this to be merged.

@jrg I think it is a few megabits, we recently upgraded from normal dsl

jrg
don't we have a list of questions about "how do I install $desktopenvironment"?

jrg
thanks
also, somebody should gamify email.
How many emails can you send that aren't readable by anyone else?
and you earn points for sending GPG-encrypted emails to other people.

1:45 PM
I gamify email ... with the archive key. :)

O_O

@jrg hm, wonder if it could run on an arm processor

Whoops, over 3k reputation :S

2:05 PM
@Braiam grats \o/

jrg
@Mateo they don't have a ARM build, last I checked.
but don't see why not.
Just found this: A X-Wing, entirely in CSS. tridiv.com/d/px

2:24 PM
Can't wait for Firefox to support this stuff.

@Braiam COngrats, that's a hard one!

2:49 PM
@JorgeCastro I dunno if I can make the discourse session... Pretty early over here

no worries!
Any issues you want me to deal with?

Not that I can think of now..
So no :)

@JorgeCastro I have a complex feeling with your congratulations :S

AHH 200 close votes.

@Seth I'm hunting those dupes :S

2:53 PM
@Braiam Good for you. I hate dupes... they take so long to go over.
I think the queue could use a little more diamond right about now...

@Seth bad thing is that most of them I flaged em myself :S

lol

Why are hardware problems being closed as "Too Board"?

Good grief.

Too many boards!
Yeah so I found an issue
The number of people doing "No action needed" on first reviews is crap

3:03 PM
@JorgeCastro Is there a way to get an stats kind of what got Shog9 on SO? meta.stackoverflow.com/a/170697/213575

he's using data.stackexchange.com to get that probably

If you ask Shog.

you can write SQL queries there to find out all sorts of things

Firefox 25.0 on Ubuntu scored 424+10 points. How well does your browser support HTML5? html5test.com

3:05 PM
@Braiam Ah. Give him some time. He's a busy guy.

@JorgeCastro yeah - not sure what the answer is. From my perspective I've only got the "sledgehammer" approach to ban "reviewers" who are not reviewing. No mod has ever used that privilege

or maybe an occasional audit or something

@fossfreedom Hmm.. is it against policy to refund this guy's bounty? askubuntu.com/questions/335546/…
I've asked 3 people now and nothing as happened.

@Seth refund for what reason? Its not a bug nor a dupe which is the normal reason to refund

Well mostly because he reinstalled so the bounty is moot
He can't know if someone resolved his problem since he doesn't have it anymore

3:09 PM
so let the bounty run. The bountier has had the visibility of the question. The fact that they have "reinstalled" may have been the answer for them - but the bounty should still stand.

That's what I kinda thought.. Go figure.

someone show where I can get the schedule
for uds for today

@Seth Actually I was to say the guy that probably he was better of reinstalling... I think I did in chat...

@Braiam yeah - I said the same as well.

3:11 PM
lol.. cause I told him that too XD

great minds think alike

thanks

That's probably why he ended up doing that.

man, windows way sometimes is useful :S

jrg
3:15 PM
Windows isn't bad for things.

quick question
can I install zsh and still have bash?

yeah

ty
another question. does Ubuntu one actively watch a directory that I choose to sync or does it check for changes after a set time?

i think it's realtime

actively watches

jrg
3:27 PM
it actively watches, but it sometimes can be really slow to get it going.

what app can I use the way sass actively watches a directory and immediately sync a file with another computer?

jrg
dropbox.

on the same network - or via "the cloud" ?

via the cloud possibly on different continents

U1 or dropbox

3:30 PM
Skydrive.
Oops.

thanks guys
@seth I think you are hungry
I'll try with U1 first then dropbox

U1 is ok between "ubuntu's" - dropbox is better for sync across different platforms

jrg
Right.

the 2 machines are Ubuntu's 12.04 and 13.04

jrg
you could try U1, but it still goes to the cloud.
And it's not as fast as dropbox with that.

3:35 PM
can you run nitroshare across an encrypted connection?

jrg
meta.space.stackexchange.com/questions/327/… < was just linked in another room, BIG ROCKET SHIPS.
@fossfreedom ew, don't try.
ew. ew. ew.
you're trying to do that over a VPN, or worse case a SSH tunnel. shudders

shame - think it would be useful to avoid storing on a third party server

Q: Reviews for first time posters need to improve?

Jorge CastroSo I was wondering how all these first time posts are getting through but the number of First Posts in the review queue is always low or zero. One reason might be that people are ignoring junk in the review queue and letting it pass. We can't do this! Look at the history of the reviews: http...

@Mateo how goes ? first impressions?

jrg
3:37 PM
you got it to work? :)

screenshot!

not bad, i like the swipe for apps and home part

How is the keyboard?

jrg
I didn't like that, but I know they were working on it.

can I pause something that is downloading in terminal to come back later to it?

3:41 PM
not with wget

jrg
Yes with wget.
@mojo706 ctrl-c it with wget.
and then start it again with wget -c $url
in the same directory.

not its from apt-get

jrg
(discovered that gem a week ago)

oh cool

jrg
Oh, then in that case, can't really.

3:42 PM
:( ok see you in about half hour

eh the delte and enter are switched from what im used to,but it is responsive

@mojo706 pause as "pause" like downloads accelerators, no.
I had to leave this title like that, since I don't know with what change it... I remember that it could be "redirect" but that seems to be the use of > and don't quite fit the content of the question.

Q: terminal update

NatherulIs there any way to change/customize, so when you type (in terminal) sudo apt-get update that all the information (including download and install) is returned in the terminal instead of in a separate window? amphibientI installed Guest Additions on my Ubuntu 10.04 VM running out of VirtualBox in order to enable directory sharing, following these instructions. Q: VNC connection taking a long time to connect (essentially...never)

Rob Avery IVI have my Ubuntu 13.10 desktop with vnc setup and installed. I'm using both a Macbook's integrated vnc remote desktop program and Windows 7's built-in Remote Desktop program to vnc. jrg
do you have a master in mind?

I was personally thinking merge this with this and leave the other one.
"alternatives" is very different from "change"
Though we could put them all in one I think it would be too messy

Install plymouth theme using already packaged themes.
how to Create a personalized plymouth theme?

@Seth although in the question his install method didn't work so...

and Install a plymouth theme manually

5:31 PM
@Mateo Brandon's method didn't work?

I see many answers with upvotes... how could not work?!

the third question
not the answer...

Jeez. What's wrong with the 12.04.3 ISO's alternate and server? Both won't install due to missing packages in the image. alternate fails to missing xorg nouveau and openchrome and server fails on crypt-modules-3.8.0 package already before partitioning menu...

@Mateo So Stephen's answers?
Wait... what?
@gertvdijk

just saying they are all basically the same question...

jrg
5:35 PM
So merge via what @Seth suggested above?

Oh... They're similar. I think the last one should be left alone..

@Seth I cannot believe this is a bug. This should be happening to all of us installing the 12.04 release... :O

@gertvdijk Well I haven't been doing any installing lately... Except Saucy.

Eliah KaganActually, I Know Which File Is Corrupted Trying to combine files from multiple corrupted ISO images into a single, good ISO image is not a good approach to this problem. Here's why. @gertvdijk :(

what? again fail... :( unable to find cryto-modules

@Seth done

I would give a lot to have a lighter laptop.
@jrg thanks

I guess I have to post this in a question as to why booting the Ubuntu ISO fails for some reason on this machine.

@Mateo I'm jealous :p

@Seth What about just the lighter?

5:44 PM
who knew zsh had better command completion :)

jrg
I did.
that's why I use it.

I feel like I found a missing part of my brain :)
@jrg I have rbenv and some settings in ~/.profile if I want to use them do I have to move the setting from profile to zshrc?

jrg
are you using oh-my-zsh?

yes

jrg
then include the rbenv module in zshrc

5:53 PM
how?

jrg
(I'm using rvm, a project i'm on uses such an old version of ruby that it won't compile without patches, and rbenv doesn't ship patches, just straight ruby)

thanks I'll let you know how it goes

jrg
good luck

you say that as if dragons lay ahead

jrg
It's Ruby. Of course there are.
Or rather, just angry unicorns.

@Seth @JorgeCastro Looks like I'm running into askubuntu.com/q/127398/88802 <-- WTF bug. File extensions were cropped in the image!?

Hey @JorgeCastro what's up with this ubuntu-discourse.org/t/this-is-just-a-test-topic/972 ?

@mojo706 use the rbenv plugin on zsh
trust me, just do that.

Is QT pronounced "Queue Tee" or "Cute"?
QT as in the framework

hehe got confused when on the hangout

jrg
6:17 PM
Cute.

@jrg Got it.

jrg
I know a guy who uses QT, and he says cute.
I say queue tee. but i'm wrong, since I don't do QT.

I say Queue tee
because saying cute is awkward

Michael Hall is saying 'cute' on UDS
Which is why I asked

Qt (/ˈkjuːt/ "cute", or unofficially as Q-T cue-tee[6][7]

6:20 PM
yeah I was confused the Allan said Queue tee

says wikipedia

@Braiam Ah cool.

6:33 PM
Hey @jrg still here?

jrg
yes

what about ?

jrg
that's different. it's a very different hardware set, with different functionality.

yeah, but do we need a tag for that?

jrg
whereas the v2 tag was just a "next iteration" thing, this is actually a different device.

6:34 PM
I mean, that stuff should go in the question

jrg
not a different model, because when I took a 3G model apart, it was a different device.
shrug maybe.
it's only 3 questions, so go ahead and edit, and then see if it comes back.

All I'm saying is we're starting to put question info in the tags.

jrg
then kill it.

we should be writing the excerpts instead...

@Braiam uhhhhh

6:35 PM
>:D

this is what I didn't get when I was a new user.. You know.

jrg
Bit randomly off-topic: If you were approached with the possibility of being paid a flat fee each week to work almost-full-time to learn to program and deliver a product, would you consider it?
This would be like an apprenticeship.
but you'd have real client interactions, with a experienced project manager and software developer alongside.

@jrg learn something I like, being guided and also paid, why not?
actually, where is it?

jrg
Cleveland OH, USA.

@jrg then is a no

jrg
6:40 PM
Just an idea.
not actually approaching you guys for this.
just asking what your gut reaction is.

Yes, I noted that.

@jrg ... ¬_¬

jrg
(dunno, might offer this to @Mateo... he and I spoke about something like this in April :P)

That could be a great job for a programmer who is starting.

jrg
@Braiam come north.
and west.

6:42 PM
and then a bit to the north again

jrg
general gut reaction is "why not?" then?
Oh hi Mateo.

@jrg no, that's MY reaction...

yes

@jrg and I love the caribean sea :P

jrg
@Braiam so you don't want to come up here for some good old fashioned snow?

6:48 PM
why not

@jrg someone say my name?

@jrg I travelled once and Snow was nowhere to be found, so too bad for it, since he couldn't be watched by an awesome gaze :P

@jrg hm, sounds interesting

jrg
Wish I had more details, but this is an idea that we've been kicking around at work for months, and finally have a project on a tight enough budget and large enough goal that this might work.

6:56 PM
there was something similar at our school sort of an internal internship - service advertised to company's that the students could then work on projects with

@Seth no you don't >:)

lol

7:57 PM
why would you? I finally got my notebook to a briljant 4.5h on battery. Not going to waste that with lots of widgets :=)

Well I'd rather use applets.. but I don't think those work anymore. Mainly I want a UTC clock somewhere..

@Seth isn't a google search for that?
