@Seth I think system bans users after certain number of spam post :S

@Braiam Yeah.. so?

hm, is there a better minesweep program...

@Seth spammers aren't like weed in AU, they die naturally after being weed out ;)

@Braiam No, their accounts stay around until a mod deletes them

@Seth but the question ban should be in place, no?

ah man, there is a 3d one...

@Braiam It might be.. I forgot we had that (we didn't use to) however, just because once you kill a monster it can't hurt you is no reason to leave it's dead body lying around... if you know what I mean ;)

hm, is there a way to deauthroize software center from using a Ubuntu one account from making "purchases" aka - I signed in to "buy" a money free app and want to remove my account from this machine

edited my question please see

running in vmware?

no on base machine
no on base machine

ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 2013-08-30 10:10 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall

I heard that polling for changes in sass really drains the battery life.

@fossfreedom any clues?

Oli
@mojo706 ?

8:29 AM
@Oli any suggestion for my problem?

@Oli compass watch <directory/file>

@Tarun sorry - talking to a work colleague
why have you got a vmware package installed?

@fossfreedom no prob
@fossfreedom I dont know ya I have virtualbox installed in it but not Vmware

ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall

ls: cannot access /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall: No such file or directory

8:36 AM
ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/*VMwareTools*

anyone know how I can use libevent to reduce battery drain when using compass watch?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 191 2013-06-15 10:07 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall

you need to make a symbolic link to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall

ohk and how can I do that?

@Oli - can you help - I'm running windows not 'buntu at the moment to check the syntax - he needs to make a symbolic link from /etc/initramfs-tools/modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall

Oli
8:41 AM
Is that not just sudo ln -s /etc/initramfs-tools/modules /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall

there is a sudo ln -s somewhere in there probably

ya I got that

Oli
Well quite. I said it in my head but seems the fingers didn't get the memo

yes I did that successfully
ln -s /etc/initramfs-tools/modules /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall

@Oli have a clue on my above question?

8:44 AM
sudo apt-get --reinstall install initramfs-tools

@fossfreedom still the same error

huh? ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall give what?

Oli
@mojo706 Yeah. I've just checked the source and it does appear to poll... Which seems bizarre when there are so many options for interrupt-style notification. That will use up more battery than not polling.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 2013-08-30 10:10 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2013-08-30 14:13 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

:/ I remember someone talking of success with libevent but I don't recall where :(

Oli
8:49 AM
@mojo706 I would run the watcher manually with inotifywait: while inotifywait -r /my/path/; do compass compile; done and that should roughly do the trick.
And that should be less intensive on the battery.

@Tarun oh dear ... that's what I was afraid of - the symbolic link was made the wrong way around

Oli
Ah. That's my bad.

ohh and how to correct it?

Oli
But it shouldn't have worked if /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall had existed before. Or is that the problem.. Am I still reading this backwards?!

no /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall didnt existed before

Oli
8:54 AM
What was /etc/initramfs-tools/modules before?

I have to create a symbolic link from modules to AfterVMwareToolsInstall right?
ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 2013-08-30 10:10 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall

Oli
@Tarun Is that before we started meddling?

yes

Oli
Right, give this a shot: sudo ln -sf /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

yes did

Oli
8:57 AM
And does that help?

root@vijay:/etc/initramfs-tools# ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules && ls -l /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 2013-08-30 14:26 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2013-08-30 14:13 /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.AfterVMwareToolsInstall -> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
tried to reinstall but again error

Oli
The content of my /etc/initramfs-tools/modules is essentially blank. I'm wondering if we're not just better-off trying a blank file.
sudo mv /etc/initramfs-tools/modules{,BAK}; sudo touch /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

@Oli yeah - sounds about right. @Tarun - you may have to reinstall virtualbox later.

ya I think its a blank file
ya I can uninstall it thats not a problem
the main problem is the ubuntu software centre doesn't starts when I click it nor does libreoffice
I think its all because of the problem in the packages here
root@vijay:/etc/initramfs-tools# dpkg --configure -a

@fossfreedom thanks to you and Oli :)
@fossfreedom can you suggest me some good books for advanced linux? that will be really helpful I know it takes dedication but I want to become a pro in linux just like you and Oli :)

hehe @Tarun takes time and lots of problems to be a pro

Oli
I don't think I've ever had a Linux book, certainly not one I've read... All my knowledge comes from breaking Ubuntu in various ways and desperately trying to fix it. And then helping other people when they do the same.

@Tarun I'll be honest with you ... I've never read a linux book in my life. Hang around here for long enough, you'll pick up stuff quickly.

@mojo ya that too :)
@Oli, foosfrredom True indeed I have learned alot from here and its been around 2 months for m on ask ubuntu

I think I will start documenting my Linux problems in my notebook for future reference

10:25 AM
@mojo706 maybe you will become a bestseller :)

I will buy an Ubuntu specific notebook for all the problems and their solutions I once knew how to configure wireless with ndswrapper now I don't even remember the first step.
@Tarun not for sale if it gets huge I will give it out for free :)

@mojo706 hehe lol

sometimes works alot of time breaks :)

@Oli according to the commands you gave me won't that compile my sass file everytime?
I haven't tried it yet

Oli
@mojo706 Isn't that what compass watch does?

that was the first problem. is there a way to compile a certain amount of (time = seconds,minutes) later?
let me just read the man page for inotify.
I'm sure there's such a flag

Oli
@mojo706 Well for a very basic version, you could just stick sleep 5; in before compass command.
If you're looking for something more expert, I'd ask on the site.

ok.

But someone's gotta.

I've gotta teach @alaa to filter out "Unclear" close... he didn't used that flag and is a bit confussed :S

@Seth Should I try to translate it? I've reformatted it and removed the thanks message at the end. It's a dupe, and the new formatting shows the error message clearly (which is in English), so in this case I'm not sure a translation is needed.

So I use this userscript that nicely formats the links I drop in the comments.
@EliahKagan there was a translation suggested as an edit..

@jokerdino Did my edit steamroll over it?

@EliahKagan I'm not sure that's necessary anymore.. but you can if you want :)

oh, looks like no one suggested Trilobite
Trilobites (, ; meaning "three lobes") are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine arthropods that form the class Trilobita. Trilobites form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (), and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, all trilobite orders except Proetida died out. Trilobites finally disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about . Th...

Is it strange that my simplest answer is the most upvoted.. :S

That's what nabbing a popular (or going to be popular) question does to you

is that even answerable?

Too localized. Oh wait, that's deprecated. Guess we'll have to let it stay.

@Seth because is the most popular :/ stackexchange.com/users/416592/braiam

@ThomasW. It has been recently put in place. — Seth 1 min ago
@Seth link?

@ThomasW. I think he wants something like distributed computation... or cluster... or what...

@ThomasW. Trying to find one.. but can't.

@Seth then your statement is not provable until a mod wakes up

Q: Quality blocks enabled for questions

Shog9Questions are the lifeblood of any Stack Exchange site. But asking good questions can be difficult, for some people entirely too difficult to bother with. When the Trilogy sites reached traffic levels that made manual review and filtering of questions burdensome for the good folks answering them,...

@Braiam Thank you.

that?

There we go.
That's what I was looking for.
@ThomasW. You just haven't been around :P

9:46 PM
@Seth you only wandered your eyes in the pile of questions :S

@Seth Correction: data's been getting hidden under other data

@Braiam True..

and therefore important announcements are missing
i've been checking in the past 7 days, and that data's missing
we need to implement a "sticky" system
or make it an FAQ
so it's easily able to be found :P

@ThomasW. That was 10 days ago ;P

lol, too many things happens in 10 days...

9:48 PM
@Seth and it's been 7 days since i came on, and the information went missing under the other cruft on meta
my point remains: important data doesn't remain at the top of the site long enough.

Which was my point you haven't been around ;P

i'm done talking to you
i'm stuck in a hospital bed right now, with an IV in my arm, because of severe food poisoning.
I'm not able to get on recently because my main system DIED
and i have no way to replace the system, and this netbook is so bad it boots only 5% of the time.

*takes a troat and severe the IV line*

so continue to make the statmenets "you haven't been around" as if that means anything worthwhile

BTW... 5% sucessful boots?

9:50 PM
@Braiam yes, 5% of the time it boots, 95% of the time it fails
the system's 5 years old, i'm surprised it hasn't up and died completely
once that happens i'll have NO internet access
not even from my phone.

@ThomasW. Sorry, I'm kinda sensitive to brusque attitudes at the moment :S
Anyhow, that meta Q didn't make any sense to me...
Did either of you understand it?

@Seth which meta question
and sorry i'm on edge, i've had a REALLY bad day :/
(being stuck in a hospital is awful)

@ThomasW. Yeah sorry..

Sorry, but I cannot comprehend your feelings... I've never been in an hospital after my birth... :S

Lucky you >.<

@Seth I think his meta question doesn't take into account a ton of other important bits of information. Such as that some people abuse upvotes/downvotes, and usually get caught, and that if you continue to post good, not-confusing questions or answers that you won't usually get downvoted. But any confusing question or answer is likely to get downvoted, but the cost is so insignificant that if you're writing good things it'll eventually end up with a net positive rep gain.
and you'll note my answer there kinda took that into account

Yeah... Just a badly written question (unfortunately just like post of his posts :S )
Badly written in the sense of it has no point

mhm

Forbidden isn't code http 409?

@Seth also your comment is old.
@Braiam HTTP:403 is forbidden
