I would assume they could switch to another provider. It is only subscribers who cannot switch, they are stuck. And they are used by Comcast to extort Netflix. And Netflix has to charge me more to pay for that. And small sites cannot pay Comcast, so they will be impeded in some way, and so only the big ones, like Netflix, survive, and so there will be less competition and lower quality.

But Netflix has servers in Europe, of course, as does Youtube.

And all the big sites. Stack Exchange, too.

So it's complicated.

They took that from languages/cultures that do have such apostrophes, because it sounds exotic, and Scifi likes exotic.

But there are some (real) people's names with apostrophes: De'Andre, um... a bunch of others.

In names it can mean the same thing, such as "O'Connor", where the ' signifies the dropping of the "f" in "Of". However, in made up names it is typically used to separate syllables.
