12:07 AM
I have no idea

5th century BC, between Persia and the Greek states.

@Cerberus Persia?
SWISH

Ding!

@Cerberus I would have guessed 3rd century bce

Pretty close!
The Opium Wars?

12:16 AM
Wait, it's a quiz? Aww, I missed it.

You can still participate!

@Cerberus It was more than 100 years, IIRC, and was anchored at one end in the 14th century.
Edward the Black Prince was involved.

Correct!
But which end?

Beginning.

Ding!

12:18 AM
Ask me a hard one.
BTW, I believe the War of 1812 was ended by the Treaty of Utrecht.

Aww, if I knew there was going to be a quiz I would have studied.

You had your whole life to study. The bill comes due today.
If @Cerberus is going to make with some more quiz questions, that is.

I prefer to be a life-long-learner.

Slacker.

In which case, the bill never becomes due and the interest just keeps growing :-)

12:26 AM
I see the doggy is slacking as well. Back to my video games, which are even now in progress.

I never liked tests anyway in school.
Have fun!

@Robusto It is possible. I only know the Peace of Utrecht of 1713.
The Treaty of Utrecht, which established the Peace of Utrecht, is a series of individual peace treaties, rather than a single document, signed by the belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession, in the Dutch city of Utrecht in March and April 1713. The treaties between several European states, including Spain, Great Britain, France, Portugal, Savoy and the Dutch Republic, helped end the war. The treaties were concluded between the representatives of Louis XIV of France and of his grandson Philip V of Spain on one hand, and representatives of Anne, Queen of Great Britain, the Duke of Savoy...
@Robusto You never answered the Opium Wars...

@Cerberus how did you un-onebox that?

12:45 AM
I removed the m for mobile.
You can see it in the history of the line.

1:05 AM
@Cerberus You mean the Greek wars

Umm.
No.

Actually you're right. The Persians hardly even bother to think about it.

1:31 AM
@Cerberus icic
so you are on mobile?

1:46 AM
No, but Wikipaedia loads faster on the mobile site.
@Mitch But we do.

@Cerberus Oh, I think I meant the Treaty of Ghent then.

At least I can pronounce "Ghent".

Yep, that was it.
The Treaty of Ghent (8 Stat. 218), signed on December 24, 1814 in the Flemish city of Ghent, was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The treaty restored relations between the two nations to status quo ante bellum — that is, it restored the borders of the two countries to the line before the commencement of hostilities. The Treaty was ratified by Parliament on December 30, 1814 and signed into law by the Prince Regent (the future King George IV). Because of the era's lack of telecommunications, it took...
I remember now that the Battle of New Orleans was fought after the war was technically over.
@Cerberus What was the question about the Opium Wars?

Mr Shiny was guessing in what year or period those wars began and ended.

@MattЭллен Hello Matt! How are you?

I'm fine thanks. How are you?

user116848
Good, thanks :)

8:52 AM
@Cerberus proof that the merger will destroy the Internet. DESTROY, I say

The only thing that can destroy the internet is an international ban on porn.

Ha! I bet that would speed things up a lot :D although it might cause riots...
all that built up testosterone

Indeed.

9:39 AM
@skullpatrol @skullpatrol

And most of those men are in power.
The rich and powerful do not want the public to riot.
So what better way to keep them quiet than to allow them unlimited porn?

International ban on porn is just like to put ban on smoking and drinking.

Children are not allowed to smoke or drink in any country that I know of.
Or even watch porn.

What you think, does any one follow it?

I don't think so.
Porn has funded the growth of the internet.

9:51 AM
If porn is ban internationally, than illegal porn will cost more then illegal drugs. lol

True dat.
It will never happen.
Too much big money involved.

why you two are discussing on impossible stuff?

We were talking about what could destroy the internet.

If that gonna happen then my condition will be same as guy in the video.

@RutvikSutaria You should read full discussion.

9:56 AM
One more thing can do that. That is online poker games.

That is not too much popular. Means i know how to see online porn but don't know how to play online poker.

10:10 AM
ban on advertisement, may destroy interney.
you can find advertisement on most of the sites.

10:41 AM
@skullpatrol Even without porn, there is plenty of things on the internet.

true dat

@skullpatrol Today I went out for a long walk again.

good for you pal

Today I feel that I would be able to recover by the end of next year. I hope this feeling does not disappear tomorrow.

me too

10:55 AM
Do you have problems too?

we all do

Today there were moments I felt I was 16 again, before I went mad.
I am now going to watch TV.

That is a very good sign.

Today's Listening | Electronic / Trap / Beats (Mixsets day 28)

12:16 PM
@JasperLoy I meant that I hope your feeling doesn't disapear. I do have problems, though. Nothing too serious, though.

12:26 PM
@MattЭллен You certainly have spelling problems. You misspelled disappear, lol.

the p diappeared!

@MattЭллен Indeed, since it appeared twice. Good thinking!

Wow, that was a really deep joke that only I can understand.

well, that time the s disappeared :D

12:48 PM
I am going to think very hard about my reading list next year over the next few weeks.
I still have difficulty deciding exactly which books to read to prepare myself.
I am currently thinking of getting 9 books by the late Serge Lang.

What is this, your personal diary?

@Robusto Yup, sorry!

@skullpatrol Interesting that it creates cycloid arcs in ever-increasing size (no doubt exactly corresponding with the ratios of the Fibonacci series). Here's a single, constant-value cycloid:

I am sorry to bring this up again, but I think that @robusto and @kitfox should make up and talk to each other again. It would be bad for them to fall apart over a jasperlol.

@JasperLoy Stop trying to provoke drama.

1:02 PM
@Robusto This is not intended as drama. Not everything in this chat is drama, lol.

OK, let me put it in words of one syllable: butt out.

OK, I won't say this again, but I am disappointed at the way you just responded.

What do you expect? I keep telling you to back off, but you persist in trying to stir things up.

I am just trying to help. I don't think what happened is so serious that you cannot mend the relationship.
I try not to say too much.
But I feel the need to say at least something now and then.

And I'm saying it's none of your business what goes on between me and someone else.
Especially after I explicitly warn you that it isn't.

1:10 PM
OK, since you respond in this manner, I won't bring up the matter again. makes notes
Everyone please take note: never bring this up again. QED

Even now you keep bringing it up. The way to stop bringing something up is to stop talking about it. Period. Make a note about that.

makes notes again
I think it would be good though if you stop acting like a bully. Now don't ignore me because I said that.

How am I acting like a bully? You're the one who is getting in my face.

Well, you know what I mean. Deep in your heart.

I don't think you're making things better, @Jasper
I think you should stop

1:19 PM
@MattЭллен Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better.
@MattЭллен Yes, I will stop now.

What, so it's your job to make them worse?

Feb 7 '11 at 15:07, by Kosmonaut
Oops, am I walking in on a psychiatry session?

1:40 PM
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: The psychiatrist will see you now (no tags)

Not if I see him first.

Who is the psychiatrist?

He's got your name. He's got your ass.
Mmm, coffee and seaweed treats. The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast.

Breakfast must include eggs. Eggs are delicious.

I... just missed how exactly you got from ass to seaweed.
But whatever rocks your boat.

1:44 PM
I used to eat two eggs every day.

@RegDwigнt It's not such a long step. Just cancel the denominators.
Oh, I forgot. You don't have seaweed in metric.

We have °Cweed.

I say °Fuck that.

I say Kick that.

Q: What does this mean this sentence mean

Gma"Something is built at an angle to the line of a wall." What does this mean

1:58 PM
Hmm, I wonder what "angle" and "wall" might mean.
Also line.

I think the most difficult part is the line.
There are infinitely many lines on the wall.

I would say the sentence smacks of ananas. Still, the meaning is quite transparent.

@RegDwigнt So which line is it? It is quite opaque to me.

@JasperLoy I don't know, and I don't care, and I don't have to know or care. If it were important, it would have been specified.
It might even be specified in the context.
The thing is, if the OP doesn't understand it with the context, how are we supposed to understand it without?

Ananas aside, little effort was put into writing the question.

2:04 PM
The title alone should disqualify the question: "What does this mean this sentence mean" is clearly someone fumbling with basic concepts of English and even language.

I would think the asker can write the question properly but did not bother to.

Nah, that's not even language, that's odd language.
And in odd language, that's just how you speak.
> Alternative to idiom “Barking up the wrong tree”?
Here's one: "barking up the right tree". Hope that helps.

A stitch in time saves nine

A lilo in time saves stitch.

I am thinking whether I should start a diary.

2:08 PM
Day 1: quit SE. Day 2: entered SE. Day 3: quit SE.
Save yourself the trouble of writing a diary, write a script.

diaries can help

I think I will just use this chat as my diary.

You've already been.
You can look up the exact moment of every shit you've taken in the last three years.

I will use something else for my dairy.

No diary can give you that.
Yes, dairy can give you that.

2:10 PM
Can a mod be suspended from chat?

Any mod can kick any mod.
And then be kicked in return.

Can he unsuspend himself?

I don't know

Why would anybody know.

2:11 PM
Time to test it out.

That's one of those things where if anybody knows it, there's already something wrong.

Anyway, what are the topics studied in computer science? I am just wondering.

Algebra and analysis. Hardware design. Algorithms and data structures.

Ah, did you get a degree in computer science?

And then the actual CS shit. P = e²NP, and the like.
@JasperLoy no.

2:15 PM
I turn 1 round and I get 360 degrees, lol.

Better than 98 degrees.

I don't understand why they say the body is at 37 degrees. Mine is usually at 36 degrees, lol.

It's in base 10.5.

@RegDwigнt 98.6 is better than 98. 0.6 better, in fact.
Or if you prefer:

And then he went ahead and lied.

2:19 PM
Sophus Lie was a great mathematician.

Confuse Yous was a great mathematician.

Confucius is an idiot.

I am VERY cool with you suggesting novel words and coining new phrases! Absolutely! fact is I am trying to find a new name for my company, That Game Show Guy. Had a comment that it was ok for parties but not professional enough for Corporate Events. So...I need something that explains Training and Team Building that will get the attantion of someone in the Corporate world! Any ideas? — Zakolyte 21 hours ago

@RegDwigнt The statement is itself a lie. He doesn't have to go ahead, he's fine where he is.

How the hell am I the only one closing this?

2:28 PM
You saw it before me.
I like how he wants "a word or conjured word" . . .

Two upvotes. Two.
Two people with 15+ reps want more of this.

those two people need tickling until they pee themselves
2

@RegDwigнt Even I do not upvote such a question.

No, those people need to go support the Naming proposal.
There used to be one.
Of course it never got anywhere, because rather than voting it up, people voted up naming questions on existing sites.

curse them
we should start migrating SWR to the puzzle site

2:31 PM
It seems my sleep has improved. Now I try to sleep 8 hours at night without taking a daytime nap.
The trick is to drink lots of coffee in the day.

@MattЭллен while we're at it, "is this sentence correct?" are puzzles, too.

:D
cryptic crossword clues the lot of them

The titles on Eng SE are much better than those on Math SE, really.

the community works at our titles, even when OPs don't

Where is Kit? Nowhere to be seen today.
@MattЭллен I would like to ask if Further Math is still offered at A levels.

2:38 PM
I don't know. I assume so

I am more interested in further meth.

It seems it isn't anymore here.
That's very sad.
I took Further Math in my time.

Especially if it's A-level meth.

I didn't. Maths was hard enough as it was

Nobody in my school took the F Math S paper though.

2:39 PM
Maths never became hard, but quickly became uninteresting.

I took the Further Maths AS paper.

Good for you.

And passed (in case you're wondering).

Math is on the decline here, methinks. Unfortunately the leaders think otherwise.

2:42 PM
for me, my downfall was trying to learn all the trignometric identities.
they just don't stick in my head

Ah, I think it is easier if you learn to derive them.

sure, but it still didn't stick

@MattЭллен No, no, the merger will merely cushion the Internet in lovely data caps that only protect users against their own Internet addiction. And then it will turn off the lights.
@MattЭллен What are those?

@MattЭллен Tell me about it.

As in 2sin(x)=cos(x)/tan(x), or something? (Of course I am just making that one up.)

2:46 PM
Gah. That's like making up a movie title and coming up with Sex and the City 2.

@Cerberus yeah, something like that. I don't exactly remember :D

Hehe OK.
@RegDwigнt What?

Actually no, it's like making up a movie title and coming up with Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo.

I remember that arcsines, arccosines and arctangents are just the reciprocals of sines, cosines and tangents. Or maybe not. I can't be sure without looking it up.

2:48 PM
I think we called those inverted sines.

I know what reciprocals are.

@Robusto They are not the reciprocals but the inverse functions.

Ow...

@Robusto I just gave you a possibility to look it up right here.

See? I would have to look it up.

2:48 PM
@RegDwigнt Ik snap het niet.

Every time I think I remember trig I find I still have to look up everything about it. Down to the least little thing.

@Cerberus niet prachtig op je.

Snap = begrijp = understand.
Maybe it's from English.

if you arctan/sin/cos a ratio of the appropriate sides of a triangle you get the angle between the two sides

Ooo snap.

2:50 PM
Ich schnall's nicht.

@MattЭллен Ohh so it's just from sine to angle, I get it.

@MattЭллен Why are you telling me this now? Can't you wait till I am working on something that requires that?

Schnappi!!

Q: I don't understand a part of the dictionary definition of the word" bastion"

AndyI looked up the word "bastion" on the internet, and the definition was: a projecting part of a fortification built in an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defensive fire in several directions" What does the line built in an angle to the line of a wall mean?

2:50 PM
@Robusto lol. sorry.

I guess "arc" should have told us it was about angles!
Hugoni salutem!

@Hugo The old question should be deleted then.

@Cerberus how do

@Hugo and so much better already. Except it's still not clear what the question is.

2:52 PM
there was a proposed edit to the first one
Comment: I am sorry about the previous error, as I was I a hurry.

Like 15 years ago I wanted to program a 3d spherical menu, so I went and got a book on spherical trig, and I thought, "Hey, this time I'm going to commit all of trig to memory, and I won't forget." And for about three months after that project I knew trig like I know my own street. And then it faded, slowly, gradually, until I am as you see me today, a mere trigonometric husk of my former glory.
I suppose it would stick if I had to use it every day, but I just have no occasion to do so.

Houdoe!

Jun 29 at 0:32, by Robusto
hodor hodor hodor

____/cannon\____ As you can see, the cannot can fire forward, away from the wall, but also to the side, along the length of the wall, from within the bastion (there are openings at the front of the bastion and on the sides). — Cerberus 2 mins ago
@Robusto It happens to us all.

@Robusto I did a spherical menu (of sorts) once, but I cheated and got povray to render it and I animated it with javascript, one frame at a time.

2:57 PM
@MattЭллен Cheater! I hope you were appropriately ashamed by your shortcut.

What is a spherical menu anyway?

no, I thought it was pretty cool :D

@Cerberus One that can be rotated on 3 axes around an origin point.

How is using POVray cheating? It took me three years to learn it, and I still can't even run it.

Rotate a menu?
Oh, well.

2:58 PM
The menu items orbit the origin point when you click and drag them. Mine would spin the faster you dragged and released a menu item.
It had momentum. The big mo.
It was a fun programming project.

Umm.
It sounds like fun...
But...

I know, not as fun as AHK.

yeah, mine just rotated, by button pushes IIRC, to the next menu item, that you then clicked on. I was young and foolish.
