2:00 PM
Bye kids!

@Meysamرهادربند Actually, I do deny God's existence. Didn't I make that clear?

That's step 1.
Robusto's at step 9 already.

@Cerberus surprised and confused so much that you don't know how to react, or unperturbed?

@DavidWallace No because you said "I firmly believe that it's not possible to prove either the existence or the non-existence of God"

CU @Cerb

2:01 PM
And if I want to give myself over to a higher power, I'm thinking Tommy Chong would do right by me.

Huhuh, he said chong, huhuh.

@Meysamرهادربند Sure. And I believe in His non-existence, even though I know that I shall never prove it. It's called faith.

@MattЭллен The former.
Bye!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 But my guess is that for most people, that's the other way around (just a guess).

Q: Person present at the right time and at the right place

user5402Is there a word to describe "a person present in the right place at the right time"?

2:02 PM
Try to make sense, dear ... Try harder.

@Meysamرهادربند How do you mean? Everyone in my (part of the) country is irreligious, and we're doing fine.

@DavidWallace Interesting kind of faith :)

I always wonder, can you be present at the right time at the wrong place? Or at the wrong time at the right place?

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 a person
there's a word for evething

Mar 1 at 15:06, by Robusto
@Cerberus You can make your life seem longer by going to church a lot.

2:03 PM
Haha.

I'm confused. Cerb is still here?

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Um, yeah.

@Meysamرهادربند I dunno. I know lots of people who are literally terrified of going to hell. Their lives are filled with guilt and shame. And they feel guilty and shamed about things that I consider perfectly ok. But religion is full of "sins" that don't make sense. And Christianity and Islam have so many "whoops! that was a bad sin! you're going to HELL!" conditions. People are miserable believing this tripe.

He keeps leaving every five minutes.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 No. Just his gravatar.

2:04 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I agree.

@KitFox pics or it didn't happen.

@Cerberus Yes, it might depend on the culture of people too. Some thousand years a ago, there was no God, and people were probably still happy.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 And many people are blissful too. I have an aunt and uncle who are very religious, and their lives would probably be quite empty if they didn't have God.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 but what about a belief that despite probably being false gives you peace of mind?

When I lived in the South and the Baptists would try to convince me to go to their church and 'accept' God, I'd tell them "Why would I choose to worship a God that has already condemned me on the basis of me being born female?"

2:05 PM
@KitFox well female is not a necessity, it's a choice. They can heal you.
2

@MattЭллен like the belief in the Afterlife. I admit: that was a tough one for me to let go of. I wanted it to be true. But then I want Santa Claus to be real too. Too bad, I guess. The world is the way it is.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Like they did for Chaz Bono?

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I suppose that's true. I choose to be born female, I should live with the consequences of my decision, or otherwise pray out the female.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 nah, belief in the afterlife is different to belief in santa - santa can't give you piece of mind - he gives you presents

Can you pray away the fey?

2:07 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You know what helped for me? There is a sort of afterlife.

@MattЭллен He still falls into the "wishful thinking" category. It IS a bit of a burden to not believe in an afterlife. It means you have to get things right in THIS life because there are no do-overs.

The Holy Spirit grants us gifts of Faith, Hope and Charity.

@KitFox You misspelled afterbirth.

and takes over our keyboards when we're not paying attention.

@KitFox what sort?

2:08 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 but which belief gives you more peace of mind?

@MattЭллен believing in Heaven would give me peace of mind. But I also feel that you have to deal with the world the way it is, not the way you wish it to be. Anything else is both futile and irrational.

believing there is an afterlife or knowing that what you do matters now?

@Robusto You mean "May they pray away the fey"?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, crap, now you tell me.

Logically, belief in the afterlife should have people killing their children, so that the children can skip THIS shitty life and move on to the better afterlife.

2:09 PM
If you believe that the time you spend on Earth is all the time you get, you will go out of your way to make sure that this time is worthwhile.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 right, hence all the rules

@DavidWallace It's only April. Wait a week or so.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Your legacy is passed on to your children, for one. Also, your existence has made an impression on people's lives. So in the corny "your memory will live on" sense, you love your children and impart your values to them. That will propagate through humanity.

@DavidWallace translation: you will sit on your ass whole day playing Tekken.

So killing your children would defeat that purpose.

2:10 PM
@KitFox Well, yeah. But that "afterlife", or legacy, is still entirely created by my actions or inaction in THIS life.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Right on.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh true. I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I meant thinking of that helped me feel less scared of dying and just being dead.

Umm, it's just after 2am where I am. I must go to bed now. Good night all.

I won't need an afterlife once I'm done living.

CU @David

2:11 PM
Night

@KitFox You don't need to fear being dead, if you believe that you won't be aware of it.

@DavidWallace Good night

@DavidWallace I'm not afraid of being dead, just the dying part.

Good night.

I wonder if Cerb will take easy on us as we pass his way?

2:14 PM
@Reg What do I do against Wasteland Skimmers?

user19161
@KitFox I am not afraid of death. I am only afraid of life.

@KitFox Get lucky with strike/rush.

So...pray?

@KitFox include a Mimic card.
Azure Reaper. Slug Borg.

nods, checks deck Right...

2:18 PM
Though Reaper is too slow.
Slug Borg has 1 wait.
So it starts eating them alive the next turn after getting played.

I don't have either of those.

Check what Mimic cards with 1 wait you do have.
Can be a structure, or even a commander. Or you can just ignore them, it's only one deck out of 20.

I got Ohio 4 times in a row, I think.
Anyway, I'm doing OK on Fight now.

Haha wait... 0hio's in there?
Damn, and so is Deedle and juxta...
Those are all Ex-Rusties.

Yeah. Surprise!
I thought you knew that.

2:22 PM
Why are they asleep? I'd have expected them to have WBed us into nonexistence by now.
Then again 0hio is supposedly banned.

It's actually "Ohio" not "0hio."

Ohai!

I assumed it was an alt or something.
@aediaλ Ohai!
Are you settling in OK?

@Reg: I've done what I can.

Hm. I just checked again, there's no difference between 0 and O that I can see.
@Robusto besten Dank.

2:26 PM
@KitFox Haven't quite got a regular schedule down yet. Yesterday I ran errands at lunch, and intended to just quit early after that, but then I ate dinner early when my dad was around, so I ended up working like ten hours.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Oh. Huh. Looks different on the fight screen, but not on the faction list.

Then my husband and I stayed up too late drinking and ogling new phones that we are going to switch to as soon as our contract is up because our current carrier has liek no signalz here.

Sounds like fun adventures.

I am so behind on transcript it's hopeless at this point, so I'll just ask: how are you doing?

I am trying to remember to think of change as fun adventure. That's how I did it when I was younger.
I can roll with change. I can enjoy change.

2:29 PM
Too much change?
I hear it's good for laundry.

Just a lot of upheaval.

rimshot

@aediaλ lulz
My husband got the job he has been hoping for.

YAY!

But it's just temporary for now.

2:30 PM
Aww.
I'll keep mah hooves crossed for ya.

But he found out on Friday and started yesterday, so it is a whole lot of schedule juggling.

Whoa!
I can imagine.

@aediaλ Thanks. It's awkward because it is contingent on whether the previous guy stays on disability or gets better.
What I am hoping for is that the previous guy was looking to get done, and will see this as an opportunity to retire on state monies.
i.e. long-term disability.
So he won't actually be in a bad way, but he also won't have to work.

Ooh, yeah. I guess that makes the situation a little sensitive.

He was originally going to be promoted, but I don't know if they still plan to do that.

2:34 PM
It's always tough when an opportunity is kind of a zero-sum game.

Yeah.
It's one of the few instances where I'd like to see everyone get a trophy for participation.

Recently with the consolidation at my work some people lost their jobs, who really didn't deserve to, and I felt guilty that I was staying on.

Survivor's guilt, eh?

Yeah. Mitigated by all the rest of the upheaval in my life, and that I feel I am pretty awesome and earned a place on the team that we kept, and the fact that we did different jobs so people weren't immediately interchangeable. But still sucky.
So I sympathize with you and your husband being in that awkward position.

I don't know how I can install emerald package on mint. any advice?

2:39 PM
@aediaλ When my husband told me a few months back that the other guy had been seriously hurt, my initial unsupressed reaction was "That's great!"

@Meysamرهادربند Sell the emeralds and make mint juleps.
(Sorry, no real help from this quarter.)

Then I immediately felt guilty.
@Meysamرهادربند No idea, sorry.

Q: "Allow to" vs. "Allow -ing"

Aslan986In a contex like the following (or in general), will you prefer: This will allow to produce better things This will allow producing better things Something else Thank you.

I think we've been there before.

The unix chat room is always deserted

@KitFox I totally understand.

2:41 PM
@Meysamرهادربند The Unix people are too busy installing VMwarez.

Well, when someone isn't willing to believe in God, won't believe by your words, @Meysam.
It's squashing water.
@Meysamرهادربند Ask in AU room, maybe?

this zero sum game might lift your spirits

@Gigili Maybe, I will give it a try

@MattЭллен bah, I'm not downloading and installing stuff.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 you not got .NET?
I wrote it, so you know the code is, uh, not intentionally bad

2:44 PM
You have a typo in your help file.

A: Allows to or allows of

nohatThe verb allow can be used in three different syntactic constructions indicating what is allowed: (a) with a gerund complement indicating what is allowed, (b) with just a noun phrase object indicating what is allowed, and (c) with a noun phrase object (indicating the patient of the allowing) and ...

@MattЭллен I'm on Ubuntu right now.

ah
@KitFox thanks. I will have to fix that later

It's cute.

I think nohat's answer is fine, and deserves more attention, too. So I've closed as dupe.

@MattЭллен Will play later, when I've got Windows boxen besides the work computer set up. But thanks :)

2:48 PM
Am I supposed to run your code to play the game?

@Gigili well, the code I compiled into byte code
@KitFox thanks :)
@aediaλ heh, no worries :)

@MattЭллен Umm, I can't seem to find it.
"ZeroSum.sln" in the .zip file?
Or "game.cs"?
Never mind.

@Gigili on the page I linked to, under the title "Download Package", is the zip file you should download.

I know, I downloaded it.

ace, so you've got it now :)

2:57 PM
Hello.

Mornin'!

hi @Mahnax :)

Good morning/day to you all.
Oh, gotta run.

That was short.

3:04 PM
H—bye!

Hibye.

3:16 PM
Hi
Is mister Unpingable F'x online?

@rumtscho his last message here was 2 and 3/4 hours ago

@MattЭллен OK, thank you

user19161
@MattЭллен I am trying to understand this sentence of yours.

I don't know what you mean @JasperLoy ;)

@rumtscho as someone with a blue name you should be able to ping @fx just fine.

user19161
3:19 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 As someone with a blue face I can ping over 9000 people.

@MattЭллен I also saw it as ambiguous - he could have been here 165 min ago, or once 120 min ago and then again 45 min ago (based on your sentence)

I just fixed in 90 seconds a defect that was budgeted for 8 hours [Metric: 16 hours] and now I need to find things to do. Wah.

"Last message" is singular. Duh.

But the exact time wasn't so important for me, so I didn't look at it further.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 See the pencil marks?

3:21 PM
What pencil marks?=
I only see pencil anthonies.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I am accustomed to reading sentences by people who view grammar as non-bounding recommendations rather than hard rules

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I was expecting a whoosh.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I know, but I thought that superping was reserved for important official matters

@JasperLoy You were expecting all wrong. Try expecting harder next time.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Next time I will expect a baby.

3:22 PM
@rumtscho Oh so yours is not a superimportant official matter? Then what are you still doing here, in the Superimportant Official Room.

@Robusto listening to TED talks? reading books? daydreaming? working on your side project? starting a side project if you don't have one?
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I intended to lurk (until F'x arrives), but I suddenly found myself involved in a conversation

I keep starting side projects despite having many

@rumtscho around here, F'x arrives about once a month. Happy lurking.

user19161
@MattЭллен You need more focus then!

And fewer aperture.

user19161
3:25 PM
Again we are on The Hour Of Power.

@MattЭллен Are you a dodecahedron?

I do need more focus

user19161
@aediaλ That was totally unexpected!

@aediaλ at least!

3:27 PM
thanks, that's so helpful

@JasperLoy Nah, he could be projecting a new side as we speak!

user19161
@aediaλ Icosahedron would be better!

user19161
In Euclidean geometry, a Platonic solid is a regular, convex polyhedron. @RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I cannot express how grateful I am for your generosity :D

3:28 PM
Checkboxes, you are checked. Why are you saying you are not checked?

@KitFox you gotta check yourself before you break yourself.

Chickety-check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Check yo head.

Kids these days.

user19161
@KitFox Maybe you checked them twice so that they became unchecked. QED.

3:29 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 the zuck looks like a vampire

@MattЭллен that's because he is.

Eeek!
Type more so he goes away!

For someone called Mountain of Sugar, his teeth are not bad.

I don't know about vampire, but I like his lipstick shade.

must run!
pop

user19161
3:31 PM
@MattЭллен No running on slippery ground!

Are those twin gay boys?

user19161
@KitFox Wow what an extrapolation! They look neither twin nor gay to me.

Speaking of hit and run, laters.

John and Edward Grimes (born 16 October 1991 in Dublin, Ireland) are an Irish pop duo. They are identical twins and perform under the name Jedward. Widely known for their blond quiffs, the twins first appeared as John & Edward on the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009, generating a phenomenon described as "the Jedward paradox". They finished sixth and are now managed by Louis Walsh, who was their mentor during the show. Jedward's debut single "Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)", featuring Vanilla Ice, was released on 1 February 2010. They first performed the song as a duet with Vanilla I...

3:37 PM
Bye.

I just developed the theory that such things can only appear on the music scene in cycles.

These guys and their audience are just too young to know what glam metal is and how ridiculous it looks today
so they are going straight into it without any thought of the consequences.

Q: Are past participles going extinct?

RichardI went to my supermarket recently and saw a display for "stuff" olives. One of my online vendors sent me an email saying my order was "ship" on such-and-such a date. I'm seeing a lot of this lately, the dropping of "ed" from past participles. Is this usage now considered acceptable?

i don't know what to do with this question

It has got a very wise answer.

3:43 PM
@JSBᾶngs Turn it into a charity cause: "Every day, thousands of past participles are dying of neglect and disuse. That trend will continue, unless you help."
3

i left a (slightly snarky) answer of my own

I noticed.

Is an answer like that even valid?

user19161
@JSBᾶngs Plus one with an edit on my part.

Is the question valid?

3:47 PM
@JSBᾶngs And Jasper just edited out your snark.

@Robusto For just two letters a day, you can end this trend.

@Robusto did he? it seems to have come back

@JasperLoy: Stop editing out JSBang's humor!

i'ma roll back any bitches what try to edit out my snark
2

user19161
@Robusto Oh sorry I did not realize it. I told you I am bad at jokes.

user19161
3:48 PM
But I doubt others will get this one either.

A: Is this correct? "I blahblah'ed your blahblah"
B: It is.

user19161
So I suspect many, many people will be editing you answer later on @jsb!

@JasperLoy Seriously, you're taking the fun out of it. I'm going to rescind up +1 if it doesn't get reverted.
I rolled it back.

no edit wars in chat

no, ed, it war sin chat

user19161
3:51 PM
But they would get it if they read the comment there before clicking edit.

@JasperLoy Not your problem.

noted, watch raisin

user19161
@KitFox Amazing!

user19161
I had to count carefully before approving that one.

bows with a flourish

user19161
3:54 PM
It sounds like something one would say while baking.

user19161
Wow JSB's answer is at plus 6 now. The snark certainly did good.

Getting lunch. bbl.

Internet Explorer is where CSS goes to die.
@JasperLoy +8 now. Your answer was like so two minutes ago.

user19161
It's nice they call one Internet Explorer and the other Windows Explorer.

2
A: Are past participles going extinct?

DavidRI would consider this as unacceptable.

Noted.

3:59 PM
12 mins ago, by Gigili
Is an answer like that even valid?

user19161
@Gigili I think it is valid.

user19161
The answer matched the question. QED.

@JasperLoy It is a statement of opinion without any reasoning behind it. At least JSB gives some reasoning.

user19161
@Robusto Tru dat.

I just heard a voice in my head whispering "flag that answer".

user19161
4:03 PM
The answer is at plus 10 now. This is unbelievable!

Jackpot.
@JasperLoy Note that its upward progress stopped after your edit, but resumed once I rolled it back.

user19161
Congrats to JSB for winning jackpot.

am i on the supercollider yet?

user19161
@JSBᾶngs I think JA might close the question soon.

What? +4: I would consider this as unacceptable.

user19161
4:07 PM
@Gigili Then you have low tolerance.

Why don't you think before upvoting an answer? Why?

user19161
Well, some people are more generous than others. I usually upvote an answer as long as it contains truth and no falsehood.

Really? You're unnecessarily generous.

user19161
There is a third answer now which seems illuminating.

@JSBᾶngs Now you are. #18 with a bullet.

user19161
4:12 PM
Anyway one more vote to close that question.

user19161
Well, at least I got to edit the third answer, changing only one letter.

Mama, it wasn't my bullet.
...Girl, you've got to know these days which side you're on.
There. Little Amsterdam. I knew I'd get it eventually.
Man, I love me some Tori.
feels cheered

user19161
@KitFox That picture looks NSFW.

@KitFox Tori Spelling?

@Robusto There is only one Tori.
And it is not Tori Spelling.

user19161
4:20 PM
One torus, many tori.

i also love me some tori
goes to check whether he has any tori on his zune

Boys for Pele is one of my favorites. Also Live From the Choirgirl Hotel and most of Under the Pink.
I haven't listened to much of her recenter stuff, although I own a surprising amount of it.
Mostly from people giving the gift of Tori.

@JSBᾶngs A Zune? Really?

And I won't say that he shouldn't have paid, but Mama, it wasn't my bullet.

@Robusto i love my zune

4:24 PM
I just like the feel of singing her songs.

Hi again.

I like the way she taps her ts for emphasis too.

Zune, what was that again...

user19161
@cerb So what about Ron in the link you gave me? Nothing there startled me.

OK never mind then!

user19161
4:33 PM
@spare How was the dental appointment? Good good?

user19161
@Cerberus Well, I guess we are on different wavelengths.

Yeah.

I really want to listen to Tori, but I have a feeling I will sing along and pay more attention to the songs than what I'm supposed to be doing.

@JasperLoy It hurt my wallet a bit.

This Fallout 3 soundtrack playlist on repeat, on the other hand, is just perfect. It's just slightly more distracting than the Tetris music, but still so familiar I can focus.

user19161
4:37 PM
@SpareOom Oh dear. It's good to find an employer that covers these costs.

@JasperLoy I have a co-pay plan. The insurance did cover over half. Thankfully, I'll recover.

@SpareOom Aww not the dentist! I hope you feel better.

@aediaλ Thank you. The numbness in my jaw is already better.

user19161
@aediaλ I am wondering if unicorns have teeth, hehe.

user19161
Once I extracted two permanent teeth because the dentist said mine were too crowded, so if I count correctly I only have 26 teeth left.

user19161
4:41 PM
I guess one advantage of having a big mouth is that more teeth can fit.

Apr 3 at 17:47, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
@WillHunting just when I think you can't possibly make me roll my eyes harder at you, you go and say something like that.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Strong thinking there.

@JasperLoy I had several extracted for the same reason. I think before I had braces they took out either 2 or 4. Plus, I had to have my wisdom teeth out too. Often the dentist has to use the child-size x-ray film on my mouth.

user19161
@SpareOom High five!

@JasperLoy I'm short too, so not too high.

user19161
4:45 PM
So the past participle question is closed but not without giving jsb 130 reps.

Oh man have I really not eaten anything but Cheerios yet today? No wonder I'm starting to want to go on a murderous rampage.
Better go fix that.

great answer, underspecified question

unquestion?

mmm, questionable leftovers

4:52 PM
@aediaλ could be a good question.

@Robusto giggles while wandering away toward the food

user19161
@Robusto Everyone is making everything look like phone icons these days.

@Robusto Haha agreed.
The dumbing-down of Windows is silly.
I want a neat row. I don't want variously shaped icons in random positions.
Not very efficient.

user19161
Perhaps mobile and touch screen is the future of computing.

what's funny is that it's like they're designing for a whole slew of people who have never used a computer before.

4:54 PM
And I don't want white, harder to recognise icons.
@Mitch Like young children?

exactly...which is my point because they are the ones who spend all the time on the computer now so know it much better.

Agreed.
There is a trend to dumb things down in order to better connect with young people, even though young people don't really want that, no scientific research to support any of it.

hardly anybody doesn't know how to use a computer, except the tiny sliver of a fraction who just learned to read.

F'x
@rumtscho depends on who's asking…

@Mitch Or anyone over the age of 80.

4:56 PM
@Mitch The baby in the video probably can't read, but she does seem to be using a computer!

Every one over 80 knows now too.

Except that it's a magazine.

that's hilarious.
I want to see a kitten doing it.
so to speak.

This reminds me of a question. I've heard Kindle Fire pronounced KINIndlefire (all together with one accent), but I's say Kindle Fire with two accents. I was thinking why I don't say it the other way and came up with the example of car models. Does that hold water?
