I don't think I'd want a job (at least in the US) where insurance is negotiable. It surprises me that there are so many skilled jobs where it isn't guaranteed.

The pay isn't really what worries me. If you're really valuable to the company, they should be paying for your insurance out of their own interests, not just as a benefit to you, because keeping you healthy means that you're working more effectively and regularly.

@ton.yeung I don't know much about short-term positions, but it always struck me as unusual that people switch jobs so frequently in certain industries like tech. You'd think they'd develop skills that make them hard to replace after time (thus increasing the incentive to keep people longer), but if anything it seems like to be successful in tech one almost needs to move around a lot.

I'd still think that the more experienced people have an easier time learning new systems.

I guess the environment in tech companies must not focus so much on the interchange of ideas and new methods so much then. I could say roughly the same thing in physics: if you're working on something from 10 years ago, there's essentially no chance it's still relevant today. But capable people generally learn the new things that they need and keep up pretty well.

Maybe it's not emphasized so much because it isn't immediately profitable also.

I spend well in excess of a third of my time just reading others' works, listening to talks, etc.

Most of that has nothing to do with what I'm working on right now.

yes.

In a tech company, that kind of study might not turn a profit ever, and if it does it'll often be a long time later. And they've gotten so set in the idea that people move around all the time that it just isn't worth it for companies to have their developers spending their time like that, when they could probably just hire someone who is already an expert on it in 5 years when it becomes relevant.

@LoganM Yeah, the turnover rate here is massive. In the two years I was here, more than half the team has changed.

Most of them are transfers to the Mountain View campus.

Not too many people (like me) leave the company.

I read somewhere that the average turnover rate among developers is like once every 18 months or so.

Overall, I think Google does a pretty good job of retaining people (within the company).

In my case, I got poached because of my specialization.

In academia, once someone is tenured, people generally don't move more than 2-3 times in their lifetime.

On average people probably stay put for more than 20 years at a time.

I guess academia does have a lot of adjuncts, non-tenured faculty, and postdocs swimming around though at the lower levels. It isn't really a problem in physics, but in other disciplines it can be.

as a very broad question, who on here suggest investing in stocks, and if not what else would be a good investment with a decent ROI within a short term period of around 6-12 months. im young and looking to try and possibly get into real estate, might buy into some silver as well, but just curious if anyone on here has any advice or experiance to share.

~ i was also once told about a "commercial dividend fund or bond" in which you loan certain companies money for a selected amount of time with a decent % of return.. but after searching around still haven't came across such a thing that exist in real life? If anyone had anymore info on something like this it would be greatly appreciated if you could speculate and or comment.

well for a better reference point i would say a base investment of 10k and anywhere up to 30k, initially. And of course the more the return the more likely im able to assume the risk, however for opinionated purposes lets say a medium to low risk.

and in question about the "commercial dividend fund" i would assume very little risk if any, as a loan to a company with a fixed APR.

however, for example, if there were a better option for a higher initial investment with a considerably lower risk or higher return i would be able to raise the investment cap to 50k

@ton.yeung yeah i was curious about that as well and figured as much. the person i onced talked to about said risk told me that if they ended up going bankrupt then they would have to pay out to loaners first.. but i figured that info was probably wrong in the first place.

thanks alot and i definitely understand the risk involved and heed your warning to an unfamiliar noob such as myself. As far as metals go i have looked into silver, seeing that that has a fairly steady correlation over the years.
flipping small real estate is where im at right now, and renting out mobile homes.

but i really want to get more into purchasing land, possible rezoning, or investing capital into developers. but yes the housing market is ripe for the picking ATM. thanks for "opinionated" info. things i will consider.

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ well thats a rather complicated question, but in short.. I have been seriously injured recently, and the work i do is very dangerous/hazardous in general as well and hard on the body. Being as young as i am already and having the issues im having medically at this age has me trying to shift the way i make money in different less strenuous ways, as well as becoming more mature and setting up such things for a future.

@shaggy There was something of a gradual decline according to people I know, though I also haven't watched TV for well over 10 years. It used to air lots of different kinds of history programs when it started 20 years ago. Then they moved to mostly war documentaries. Then they started bringing in some questionable conspiracy theory stuff, and that got way better ratings. So now they mostly talk about aliens. I hear they've also gotten into reality TV.

Unless you already have a large surplus of money, investing isn't an especially easy or efficient way to make more. I did some investing in high school, and it was an okay way back then, but these days even my job as a TA pays better than what I could reasonably make off my savings (which are fairly substantial for my age).

thanks for your input...I wouldn't have expected a decent payrate from a TA either(no offense), as i hear teachers themselves are underpayed..at least last time i checked

I don't get paid well at all, compared to what I could be making with my skills. I can't comment on teachers, but graduate students are generally paid well enough to live on, but little extra.

But it's a simple matter of math to see that investment isn't worth the time. Let's be rather generous and say that I could get 10% more ROI if I picked stocks myself than just putting my money in whatever default I'd use. Then I'd need around 300k saved up and ready to invest just to make as much as I do now.

The 10% figure isn't realistic either, at least not unless I'm going to drop out and do it full time. But if I were going to do that, it would be much better to get a high-paying wall street job.

@ton.yeung ahhh phewwww, i was going to say, this early? yea i was readying and watching simultaneously, but ended up dropping the manga for right now due to being busy with other things, so you consider it much better than the what, 3 eps out now of the adaptation.. ive only read maybe a chapter or 2 ahead

@ton.yeung ill check it out, i prefer to go C#, i just dont have the resources to do so atm, so im briefly grazing over Java because of the similarities in some aspects and the thought of possible android dev, however i know it is an overly bloated lang, and herd of other issues with it as well. if you have a better language to suggest im always welcome to check others out, C# just seemed pretty powerful, and especially useful in the beginning to help motivate use by way of game dev.

just a random thought, maybe im just crazy..but.. is it just me or is it more difficult to read subs and still be able to 'catch the action' on a widescreen 16:9 tv vs a standard 4:3 giving you a sharper/more close peripheral zone. i think so, its been driving me crazy, and i prefer to watch subs on my laptop, even though i rather see in in HD on my LED widescreen. :(
