Q: Is there a way to add a timer to a Beamer presentation?

ViviI have seen presentations in Power Point which contain a timer. Can this be done in Beamer using a simple command, or maybe a package? If not a timer, is it possible to at least get a clock on your slides?

does anyone have a workflow for converting latex to image to use in word documents?
I'm trying at the moment but it's a bit of a mess, i'm on linux

12:11 PM
@baxx Usual way on Linux would I think be ImageMagik

yeah i've been using pdftoppm -rx 300 -ry 300 -png FOO.pdf bar but it still looks kinda fuzzy compared to the PDF
looks very "I've just imported an image" sort of thing
I've found a matplotlib solution that may work a bit but i need to align stuff, use packages etc so tbh it's not really an option

@baxx I'm not familiar with that: I normally go for a resolution of 600 dpi (I'm mainly on Windows so use IrfanView, which provides a GUI setting but basically does the same thing)

oh ok... I thought the max was 300 (it doesn't say the max in the man page)

12:32 PM
How to use this option?
I'm trying : \standaloneconfig{length=2pt}
ok it's working length/border whoops

@baxx \documentclass[border=2]{standalone}

@egre
@egreg yeh it seems to be ok now thanks, though it doesn't convert the left / right boarders any tighter which i was hoping for

@baxx \documentclass[border=0 2]{standalone} will add zero border at left and right, 2 at top and bottom; you can also specify four numbers, in order left, right, top and bottom, so the previous one is equivalent to border=0 0 2 2
@baxx The unit is Postscript points (72 to an inch)

@egreg yeah, i still have space with that it seems
i was in landscape though

@baxx What's the meaning of landscape for standalone?

12:48 PM
pretty stupid artifact of me trying to get things working :< it was because I couldn't fit the equation into the portrait doc before... and I wanted to try and have the equation as large as possible and then convert that for better quality
i seem to be making (slow) progress though :P thank you
here's an example with the border set to 0 0 0 0 imgur.com/a/XfY2N
should that be tight on the right, left of that equation?:

@baxx Here's an example
\documentclass[border=0 2]{standalone}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\begin{document}

$\displaystyle
\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2}\,dx\biggr)^{\!2}=
\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2}\,dx\biggr)
\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-y^2}\,dy\biggr)=
\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2-y^2}\,dx\,dy=
\int_{0}^{2\pi}\int_{0}^{\infty}e^{-\rho^2}\,\rho\,d\rho\,d\varphi=
\int_{0}^{2\pi}\biggl[-\frac{e^{-\rho^2}}{2}\biggr]_0^{\infty}\,d\varphi=
2\pi\cdot\frac{1}{2}=\pi
$

\end{document}
@baxx More than in the output, I'm interested in the input

1:03 PM
how to use align with this example @egreg ? is that possible? thank
*thanks

@baxx No, but aligned works.

with begin{equation} or still with display style?

@baxx Like the following (aligned uses \displaystyle by itself)
\documentclass[border=0 2]{standalone}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\begin{document}

$\!\begin{aligned}
\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2}\,dx\biggr)^{\!2}
&=\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2}\,dx\biggr)
\biggl(\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-y^2}\,dy\biggr)
\\
&=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2-y^2}\,dx\,dy
\\
&=\int_{0}^{2\pi}\int_{0}^{\infty}e^{-\rho^2}\,\rho\,d\rho\,d\varphi
\\
&=\int_{0}^{2\pi}\biggl[-\frac{e^{-\rho^2}}{2}\biggr]_0^{\infty}\,d\varphi
\\
&=2\pi\cdot\frac{1}{2}=\pi

OK cool i'll try - i've never seen this formatting before

@JosephWright are you still going to be putting @StefanKottwitz talk up online?

3:16 PM
@DaiBowen Probably later today: have to put the slides and audio together

@PauloCereda @DavidCarlisle You know that the german language is simple though compound words are quite common. Have a look at this simple german in a nice story: youtube.com/watch?v=-iUho94Duy8

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD SOMEONE PUT \USEPACKAGE{INDENTFIRST} INTO A JOURNAL ARTICLE?!
(sorry for shouting, it's more crying than shouting... :-( )

@yo' Because the author is a friend of @DavidCarlisle's

yo'
@egreg the worst thing is, from the code I see that the authors read the journal's typesetting manual :-(

@yo' Well, they do want their first paragraphs indented nonetheless. Why don't you please them? ;-)

yo'
@egreg because.

9:20 PM
Hello!!
How can we insert a matrix in Google Docs?

yo'
@MaryStar Is this really a question in the TeX chat?

@MaryStar You cannot insert matrix into Google Docs. The matrix is already there, it is everywhere!

9:53 PM
@yo' you mean unlike the state of the Bangladesh v England test match? bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/37743340

10:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle 33 runs? Easy.
