Q: Error after compiling

BenediktEvery time I try to compile my TeX code to PDF the compiler runs and at the end there is a message like: process ends with an error But neither the log file nor the error message shows me the error. I really don't know what to. It would be great if someone could tell me what I've got to do....

Q: Elsarticle double-blind mode?

SSilkIs there a double-blind review mode for elsarticle.cls? The last journal I submitted to included a review mode for double-blind reviews that automatically removed most identifying info, e.g. authour names and contact info, but I don't see something like this for elsarticle. When I put it in rev...

Probably 'no' is the answer: a feature request of sorts?
Others: don't be shy, @MarcoDaniel and I will shut up if requested :-)

Q: Apalike-letters and non-English (Polish) characters (alphabibitem)

bpiecI'm using apalike-letters bibliography style which inserts heading for each first letter of authors' names. It works well for English letters but when a name starts with Polish letter it starts to get crazy. Consider following example: Note that the order of the items is correct (Ł should be a...

A clear 'biblatex is the way forward' question, but how best to handle it?

Q: Can't remove 'unicode' inscription on top of .pdf document compiled from .tex

user1494664 The inscription appears after adding \usepackage[russian, english]{babel} to the .tex document. \documentclass[10pt,a4paper]{article} % tex instructions \usepackage[a4paper,margin=0.75in]{geometry} \usepackage{mdwlist} \usepackage{multicol} \usepackage{relsize} \usepackage[russia...

Seems unlikely from the example: TL?

@JosephWright I was thinking about the same question. I think the easiest way is lua/xelatex and biber.
@JosephWright TL -- no registration

@MarcoDaniel Ah yes, true

@JosephWright It's a feature request. I understand the question in this way that the op wants to have a true/false or on/off key.

I've just commented on that question.

10:10 PM
@percusse OK, perhaps leave it for the next session?

If it was needed by the journals Elsevier would put it. I think this is a usage for some other publication that doesn't have a LaTeX class.

I think the answer of this question is: Use onslide only for one element. The ampersand must be set outside of onslide:

Q: Interference between \includeonlyframes and \onslide across tabular row

Henry DeYoungI seem to have run into a strange interference between \includeonlyframes and use of \onslide to uncover a row in a tabular environment. Consider the following: \documentclass{beamer} \begin{document} \includeonlyframes{second} \begin{frame}{First frame} \begin{tabular}{rl} \onsl...

Is this true?

@JosephWright I do see that user time to time so probably s/he would comment on it. So I also think saving it for later

@MarcoDaniel Yes: there was another similar question somewhere. May have been a beamer bug report
It's due to the fact that table cells are groups

This needs one vote to clear from the list

10:15 PM
@JosephWright The question itself is asking for "Why does this happen?" rather than "How can I avoid it?" since the questioner provides a few reasonable solutions so if you can dig out that bug report it would make a reasonable answer, I think.

Q: commutative diagram having drawings as objects

tetrapharmakonI need to draw a commutative diagram having drawings as objects, like in this link which is also shown below. I have some problems: xy-pic "slants" the objects; "matrix" library in TiKZ is not happy to have other TiKZ commands in the matrices I wnat to draw. What can I do? This is a tenta...

This is kind of getting old, anybody has an idea how to handle: (No is the answer but how)

Q: Creating figures of polytopes (in 3D): Is it worth switching from PSTricks to TikZ?

Corsin PfisterI used PSTricks a lot to create figures of polytopes. More recently, I have become aware of discussions going on about whether PSTricks or TikZ is the better choice for creating figures of all kinds. From the general discussion on this issue, I have come to the conclusion that I want to use TikZ ...

@AndrewStacey Am I wrong for remembering an answer of yours dealing with this? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/65332/… I did a crystal ball but I don't know the mechanism exactly...

@AndrewStacey I've added as a comment to @MarcoDaniel's answer - the bug is the same underlying issue, but not quite identical to the question

@JosephWright Edited
I need help to explain why the example works ;-)

A: Strange compilation problem using adjustwidth environment from changepage package

Marco DanielThe nesting fails. I don't know why but the following works: The relevant part is: \nointerlineskip\leavevmode Here the complete MWE: \documentclass{report} \usepackage{changepage} \begin{document} \chapter{Text1} \begin{adjustwidth}{1cm}{2cm} \nointerlineskip\leavevmode \section{Text2} ...

Q: Change thickness of TikZ pattern library patterns

knittlIs it possible to change the thickness of patterns drawn by the TikZ pattern library (IV Libraries, 41 Pattern Library)? Setting thick on the node, only applies to the node itself, not the filling pattern. \usetikzlibrary{patterns} \begin{tikzpicture} \node[square,thick,pattern={north east lin...

@MarcoDaniel Is there any hope for this one?

Q: Floating TikZ picture within text in mdframed

AliWhen there is not enough space for TikZ picture at the end of a text, it will goes to the next page, and leaves an empty space after the text. Is there a standard method for putting TikZ picture in the middle of text, flowing the text to the next page, instead of pushing TikZ picture? A possible...

@MarcoDaniel It's the classic 'a lot of stuff is implemented by LaTeX as a trivlist, even though this results in weird error messages' business. As a result, you need something to deal with the \par tokens correctly, which \leavevmode does.

@percusse First time I see this question

@MarcoDaniel It didn't have the proper mdframed tag ;)

@JosephWright Thanks

@MarcoDaniel The way that error message is produced is using \everypar and some clever \par definitions
Yay, down to 500 unanswered

10:27 PM
@percusse I think no package can handle this. floating inside a save box isn't possible. But @FrankMittelbach is the master of boxes.
@JosephWright 200 is the aim

@MarcoDaniel I know
@MarcoDaniel You are quite right: no floats inside boxes

Q: Changing BibTeX "format.names" function in .bst file to force "et al." citations for entries with more than 3 authors

user1125946I'm using natbib package for my reference list. I have been struggling with BibTeX. I'm writing for Journal of Finance, and they want > 3 citations to be in "et al." format for the body of the paper. But the Journal's .bst file makes it such that no amount of authors will make natbib \citet or \c...

@JosephWright Done

anything with complex floating stuff leave open, I have a bunch that I would like to work on and have ideas (only no time :-)

@JosephWright Is there any Impossible choice to close the question then ?
This is a feature request that needs massive undertaking :

Q: Industrial schematics

ntdI'm investigating if it is possible to generate electrical schematics for industrial machinery with the LaTeX ecosystem. They are quite different from electronic circuits because are developed sequentially. Here is a typical page drawn with QElectrotech (the only open source package I found for s...

Actually it's a package request

@percusse So NARQ?

10:31 PM
@MarcoDaniel nope .. as long as it says mdframed it is not for me :-)

@JosephWright I would say so. We can reopen it if something is invented for that

@percusse OK

@FrankMittelbach It is like multicol -- savebox -> vsplit -> output ;-)

Maybe putting a CW answer before we close might be better
bah nvermind :P

@JosephWright I think it is a pity if nowhere there is a collection of what people are looking for in terms of package requests .. not sure how one can handle this but once closed it is gone basically

10:33 PM
@percusse I don't think so. Maybe you're thinking of the issue of defining fadings in headers. (Mind you, I forget half the answers I give so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I'd answered something similar before.)

@AndrewStacey Ah no, you got it. That was indeed the header question.

@FrankMittelbach Many of these are very specialised, and I'm not sure how the work would be done

Q: Easy way to port environment defined in framed to mdframed?

Andrzej GiniewiczI've been working on environment based on framed package, but wanted to port to mdframed due to fact that it plays better with footnotes and has more features and more active development. The issue is that I do not know mdframed internals or how to create more advanced styles with it. Also, I fou...

@FrankMittelbach The TikZ area in particular attracts a lot of 'I want a specialist drawing tool to do ...'

10:36 PM
@JosephWright Some of which do result in packages.

@JosephWright then perhaps somewhere there should be a way to collect those (after all given interest there may be people getting interested in providing all kind of weird animals ... eh humming birds, right ? @Paulo?

@FrankMittelbach Plus, the standards of that area are frightening to implement. I would really donate some money to the author if such a thing arises. But I do agree that we might do some package request meta question.

@AndrewStacey Yes, I realise that. But that does not make them good questions, or at least that's been the consensus to date

@JosephWright what you really would need is a side corner where one could put questions that are "naturally" open because somebody needs to develop a bigger solution for them

Feature Request -> OT

Q: mdframed frametitle no page break

AbstractDissonanceHow can one prevent the frame title from breaking? I'm getting a break right between the title and the contents which looks silly. I still want the content to be broken as normal but I want the frame title to be on the same page as the content.

10:39 PM
@percusse: Hi

@HarishKumar Hoi hoi

@FrankMittelbach Somewhere in the FAQ it says that the aim of the site is to have questions which can reasonably be answered. Developing a new package is borderline for 'reasonable'

@percusse: I have opened a pandora's box again.

@HarishKumar Don't mess with others stuff :P

10:41 PM
Right, bed time for me. I'll review things after this point in the morning. Have fun :-)

@JosephWright sure but that faq was writen what 2 years ago? ... things might change over time .. I just see a bunch of good questions where the answer would be a package and development and i would hate to see some of them vanish

@JosephWright Good night. I'm out of votes too.

'night everbody ... time for me too

@FrankMittelbach Good night.

@percusse: Hehe. That is why I am thinking of opening a new question. I may post tomorrow. Before posting I want to give it a good try from my side.

10:42 PM
@JosephWright No -- you are my moderator ;-)

@HarishKumar Is it the pgfplotstables that is causing the problems?

@JosephWright Absolutely. Certainly my answers that have become packages have done so organically and the original questions were not asking for packages. So any "Please write a package so I can draw this without thinking" questions are off-topic in my opinion.

@percusse: Yes. I tried to change your code to print only those rows having N/A. Still on it. But it is evading me. (Say I want to print the list of absentees)

@HarishKumar I think you need to take out the \pgfplotstableuserowfalse from the cases that match but after the whole list is processed.
@HarishKumar Bah that's a bad explanation. I'll try to look at it later. Plese post the question as you wish.

@percusse: But that will include those rows and alright. But how to remove other rows. Say first I will print the table like your code does. The next table should have only the absentees.

10:49 PM
In the number list creation only the true case should record the counter value, right now it's recording the N/A cases
Then the same mechanism would give you the list of absentees.

Q: How can I make mdframed boxes break at the bottom of the page?

ezietsmanI'm trying to get mdframed to split at the bottom of my page, such that there is no white space between the bottom of the frame and the footer. At the moment I have this: I'd like to have mdframed split right at the bottom of the white space, instead of leaving a gap between it and the bottom ...

@percusse: That part is what I am struggling with.

@HarishKumar Move the line \xappto\mypopulatedlist{\arabic{myrowcount},} under the \else

@MarcoDaniel I'm even out of closing votes :)

10:53 PM
@Marco: done

If this is worthy an upvote, that's one more off the list: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/62123/…

@percusse: move to where?

@HarishKumar Just under the \else instead of above.

@percusse: will try it now.

@Kurt Thanks.
@DavidCarlisle: I answered. I hope it's ok: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/65173/…

11:00 PM
@percusse: So easy! It worked. I changed N/A to Absent. Everything is fine and. Now I will be off to next task. Thanks a lot.

@HarishKumar My pleasure

@MarcoDaniel: I voted your answer there.

@percusse: Now off to add the real data. There are different categories. I aim is to produce a rank list for each category. I will try to shoot your Brahmastra (your patch) to filter out those things and choose. I have lot of courage now as you are there to make things simpler.
