@FrankMittelbach The FAQ is mainly written by the Powers That Be. The key idea is that the SE model works well for some things, but not others. A good example is discussion: does not work well in a Q&A format. I've also asked recently about feature requests on meta, and the answer seemed to be they are not valid as giving an answer is almost impossible.
@FrankMittelbach I see what you mean about requests for new packages, but not everything fits the format. One possible approach would be to have a single question (on meta?) with one answer per request. We could then close the 'main' question, with the idea being that if a new package does result we have a place that tells us where the request is.

@JosephWright I'm not even sure that such a thing is usefully manageable here. All I'm saying it is a pity to lose some of this by simply closing it off. For example, if tikz results in a lot of feature/package requests then perhaps they should get directed in that direction ... dunno ... I don't want more work on my or somebody elses plate ... we don't get the things done we try to

All: currently there are 470 unanswered questions. I'm going to devote some time to trying to get this down a bit more over the next few days. There may be a few 'is this TL' questions from me :-)

@percusse TeX Live works well with biber. MikTeX 64bit has problems ;-) (in the past)

@percusse Also works for me on my Unix TL, which is 'up to date'. Just updating Windows TL to see if this makes a difference

So the best thing for me would be to completely uinstall TL and switch back to MikTex huh

@MarcoDaniel All has own problems but I find it striking to see how people are being patient with TeXLive but go berserk with a nanosecond delay with everything else.

@percusse For me, it's mainly about having matching set ups on different platforms. My Windows rig has both installed :-)

@JosephWright I know that but updating TeXLive (at least looks like) is a major undertaking, I have never bothered with updating other than uninstall/reinstall procedure in MikTeX (or on-the-fly package install). Probably that's why it's hard for me to see the point of TeXLive.

My cut down example, above, gives the same issues. It's the number of tokens that seems to be key.
You can comment out all of the picture stuff and you still get the error, but don't if you drop to just a comment character per line. So I think what is happening is that TL is not writing the comment.cut file completely before trying to read from it again.

Yeah, that what was I meant. Nested comments should not be that uncommon.

@N3buchadnezzar You also need a minimum number of characters. I suspect it's the combination that does it.

YEah
Guess I have to switch back to MikTex then
@JosephWright I can often have several pages inside the nested comments.

cans somebody upvote this answers (PLEASE): tex.stackexchange.com/questions/61204/… and tex.stackexchange.com/questions/64347/… -- They are on our list.

2:27 PM
anyone know how I can cite a reference number in text?
ex.) Blah blah blah from Reference 50...

@MarcoDaniel Done
@LordStryker Depends on exactly how you are doing your citations

Hmmm, I'm using regular ol' Bibtex. Not sure what you mean.

@JosephWright Thanks. We will reach 400 ;-)

@LordStryker Well, with no add ons just \cite will work

2:30 PM
but that will get me [50], or a superscript in my case
is there a ~\ref{...} command that would do it?

@LordStryker Like I said, depends on how you are doing your citations
Which packages do you load?

achemso would be the only package that would really have any affect on my citation style

@LordStryker Ah, right. achemso uses natbib.

@PatrickGundlach google ist der hammer

i'm using a few others that has no bearing on cite style afaik

2:32 PM
@MarcoDaniel I just came across google insight

Ich trinke Wasser. :)

@LordStryker As shown in achemso-demo.tex, you want \citenum

@PauloCereda Sorry. The website is in German and I couldn't switch ;-)

@MarcoDaniel <3

Thanks @JosephWright. You guys always come through with the help I need.

2:38 PM
@PauloCereda A friend and I will start an English curs in two weeks. I hope after this I can speak English.

@MarcoDaniel You're off to a great start it seems.

Here's the english version:

@MarcoDaniel English curs? thefreedictionary.com/cur (definition 2) :-)

@JosephWright Damn -- course
:-)

@MarcoDaniel It's okay, the result is quite amusing

2:44 PM
@JosephWright for a native speaker ;-)

@N3buchadnezzar I'm still working on the strange comment issue. I have a feeling there is something more serious up here, but I need to turn it into a plan TeX example before I report it.

3:01 PM
@StefanKottwitz Got a minute to chat about an old answer of yours?

3:14 PM
@JosephWright Ok! I guess the comment package provides some difficulties expressing it as plain tex?

@N3buchadnezzar Not so much: I need to get the right parts sorted out. comment does some things differently in plain, so I can't use that code to report the issue.

\makeatletter
\renewcommand*{\rightarrowfill@}{%
  \arrowfill@\relbar\relbar\chemarrow}
\makeatother
\newcommand*{\sexactseq}[5] {0 \xrightarrow{\mathmakebox[2.3em]{}}{} #1 \xrightarrow{\mathmakebox{2.3em]{#2}} #3 \xrightarrow{\mathmakebox[2.3em]{#4}} #5 \xrightarrow{\mathmakebox[2.3em]{}} 0}
Does someone see a mistake with that macro?
I am using \usepackage{mathtools}

4:13 PM
@KannappanSampath I'm busy at the moment - perhaps comment to the answer?

@StefanKottwitz I seem to however have figured out. If further need arises, I'll do that. Thanks for replying.

@FrankMittelbach Yes
@N3buchadnezzar I've sent an e-mail to the TL mailing list. Once I have an answer, I guess I'll use it to reply to your question.

Q: How to set path to Latex distribution in a .tex file?

shailenTJI am writing my CV and and I am modifying the moderncv package. Since Texlive can update packages and potentially overwrite my changes, I have copied the moderncv package inside my working folder. However, the moderncv.cls file refers to files that are in the latex distribution folder. How do ...

TL as well and no reaction and violating LPPL ...

@FrankMittelbach Yup again

5:23 PM
Can someone please tell me if my math mode spacing is awkard?

@KannappanSampath The spacing seems to be ok. The first comma below the diagram is strange.

@StefanKottwitz Thanks for catching that!

And I try to avoid text in parentheses , could be a subordinate clause or a footnote.

I put it in one line first but I call something a diagram and I don't display it -- that irked and I changed and found spacing strange.
@StefanKottwitz Hmm, thanks again for this guideline. I'll try to adopt it!

@MarcoDaniel I can't even speak Portuguese. :)
Counter Terrorist a.k.a. Moderator a.k.a. Forgiver a.k.a. Higgs Boson a.k.a. Garbage Collector opened a new chatroom entitled (La)TeX & Friends Bug Report. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I saw

@JosephWright OMG I almost suffered a heart attack now! I moved my current workstation to another place here (my office is waiting for the new furniture), so I decided to turn the sound subwoofer on. The message notification scared me! :)

@FrankMittelbach The first time someone has asked about LaTeX3 with an ancient system: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/65958/…

@JosephWright The lack of formatting! It hurts my eyes! :P

@PauloCereda Well yes

@JosephWright Out of curiosity, how old is the system? :)

5:47 PM
@PauloCereda Not actually that old, but LuaTeX has changed a lot and XeTeX did not used to have \strcmp. Something like three or four years.

@JosephWright Ah. :)

@JosephWright ouch .. 2005 on unix with probably manual install :-(

@FrankMittelbach Yes, could well be

@JosephWright most certainly is given the paths

@PauloCereda We had quite a bit of discussion about requiring \pdfstrcmp, but it was the right decision even though you do need a newer engine

5:50 PM
@JosephWright I can try an answer but it will mainly be "install a recent TL

@FrankMittelbach :-) Did not think of the paths - was working from the engine versions
I had a go at editing the question, but 'tis horrible

@JosephWright I think it is good enough, not worth fixing that

@JosephWright Personally, I'm inclined to backwards compatibility, but I also understand when there are things that must be updated for their own good. Legacy code sometimes is a burden. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, that is true. The problem was not requiring \pdfstrcmp made the expandability of some functions variables.
We had some odd bugs as a result

Hmm, don't like the downvoting

Q: Why is the question closed instead of migrated?

PatrickThe question bibtex downloading tools should not be closed but migrated to tex.stackexchange.com. This is a question that is welcome on "our" site (I am not a moderator there, but a regular user)

folks at stackoverflow are hostile ;-))

@JosephWright me too. esp. when unaccompanied by a helpful comment.

First arara answer for me! :)

@PatrickGundlach I upvoted it! :)

@PauloCereda Awesome! :)

@KannappanSampath I need to use the tool more often. :P

@PauloCereda The fontspec one

7:28 PM
@PauloCereda my first upvote for today

@PatrickGundlach <3
@JosephWright Phew, now we are back at zero. I'll upvote it ASAP.
+4/-4, that's what I call a tie. :P
@MarcoDaniel: tex.stackexchange.com/a/65977/3094 It has begun. :)

7:47 PM
@PatrickGundlach I'm intrigued by the 'shopping' business. How do they deal with the need to have objective comparisons of approaches to a problem, which must include tools for a task.
Of course, the question itself would probably be a dupe, for example of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/143/…

8:16 PM
@PauloCereda Awesome

@JosephWright Hmm, I'm tempted to put an answer for Jabref's online search tool which works like a charm (at least for IEEExplore searches)
I think Jabref folks need to emphasize it a little better.

@percusse I don't really know, as the searches I need to do are paid-for databases

8:42 PM
@JosephWright So is IEEE (and as far as I know JStor and ACM Online too)

@percusse Ah right. I need Web of Knowledge ('WoK', text based) but also SciFinder and Reaxys, which need the right editor to even do a search. JabRef doesn't do WoK

9:02 PM
@PauloCereda right, you got the gist of it ... would be something for expl3 I guess but first needs a translator :-) or perhaps babelfish

9:35 PM
@PauloCereda αριστον μεν υδωρ LOL

Q: Can SO questions on TeX be migrated to tex.SX?

Andrew StaceyThis "question" concerns the relationship between SO and tex.SE, in particular what the existence of the latter means for questions about TeX on SO. First, my assumptions (yes, I'm a mathematician ...): SO is for programming questions, at a level appropriate to someone employed as a programmer...

With the result that these days I stay as far away from SO and meta.SO as I can ...

StefanIn Tufte-Latex all captions etc. are in the side margin. I want to put the equation numbers there as well. Is it possible to do this?

You'll see my (deleted) answer. I can't seem to fix the vertical skipping that's going on though...
