In Good Subjective, Bad Subjective, we made a pretty solid first stab at defining a constructive subjective question, one that I’ve been happy with so far.

Constructive subjective questions:

inspire answers that explain “why” and “how”. tend to have long, not short, answers. have a constructive, fair, and impartial tone. invite sharing experiences over opinions. insist that opinion be backed up with facts and references. are more than just mindless social fun.

tend to have long, not short, answers. have a constructive, fair, and impartial tone. invite sharing experiences over opinions. insist that opinion be backed up with facts and references. are more than just mindless social fun. …

that post gives a good rundown on the issue.

than there should be a place on Islam.SE where people can ask for recommendations

yeah, it's an ongoing debate pretty much across the network.

so what are the results of the debates?

pretty much as i said; they don't really work well with the SE mechanic.
i would be all for putting together a definitive book list, but it's an uphill battle. i don't really want to propose it unless i have a solid plan developed on how to make it actually work.
i.e., something like this classic StackOverflow post:
1252
Q: The Definitive C++ Book Guide and List

grepsedawkThis question attempts to collect the few pearls among the dozens of bad C++ books that are released every year. Unlike many other programming languages, which are often picked up on the go from tutorials found on the Internet, few are able to quickly pick up C++ without studying a good C++ book...

since most of the definitive islamic books are classic (i.e., there's not a lot of new "must reads" coming out), we could probably compile something without it going out of date or needing constant maintenance.

I am sorry I must not understand properly, what are you talking about?

12:10 AM
one of the biggest arguments against "recommendation" questions is that they too often go out-of-date.

ok

since most of the islamic books worth reading were compiled hundreds of years ago, that is not much of an issue for us.

:)

so we could probably make a list (like the one i posted) describing all the major works of fiqh and compilations of hadith, and not worry about it changing every year.
i don't want to bring it up on meta without a clear idea what to do though.
since everyone who has been on the other SE sites probably already knows the years worth of arguments against "book recommendation"-type questions.
(that's just me though. i'm a perfectionist.)

maybe we should have a list of every Islamic book
Major and Minor
Old and recent
Just a thought
what do you think?

12:17 AM
that's a bit too broad of scope. if we go this route, i think we'd be better limiting it to the major works.
probably broken down by school. "Definitive Hanafi Works", "Definitive Shafi'i Works" etc.

or by author?
like Tirmidhi
He has two books
'Atleast to my knowledge he probably has more but the ones to my knowledge is
His book of Hadith an The book of Shama'il Muhammadia
@goldPseudo should we also have all the hadith books?

the biggest problem with too broad a scope is, there's a lot of books out there.
especially if you want to include shi'a works as well.
that's one of the other problems with "book recommendation" type questions.

:)

@AlUmmat I'm going to go back to your question on why we can't have recommendations...

right now, i think the community wouldn't have a problem with "book recommendation"-type questions which focused on a particular school. "What are the definitive works for the Hanafi school of fiqh?" probably wouldn't be closed.

12:24 AM
@Dynamic ok
@goldPseudo I know this might be a stupid question but I just want to ask it, how should we know?

Basically Joel has his mind set on a Q&A site. And in my opinion, SE is the only network of Q&A sites. The rest are forums, which are discussion boards.
And discussion is not welcome outside of a chat room/meta

maybe there should be a chat room for book recommendation?

@AlUmmat Well... I don't know about that either. Here is the description of chat:
This site is an extension of The Stack Exchange Network, so discussion should more or less revolve around the same topics you'd find at The Stack Exchange Network — but in an interactive, less strictly Q&A focused way. Do have fun, but please keep it professional and always be respectful of your fellow community members.

yeah, there's no reason a user can't log into chat and just ask for what books to read.

But I don't think there should be a room dedicated to it

12:30 AM
true.
probably get better answers in the main room where everyone sees the question.

I agree

Random question. You guys don't have to answer if you don't want to: Are you planning on going up for Pro Tem Mod?

what is that?

@AlUmmat The temporary moderator for Public Beta sites

Any one can go ?

12:33 AM
@AlUmmat Anyone can be nominated. 3 become mods

oh, you mean the moderator election?

No. Elections don't happen until we become a full site. I mean people get nominated and SE appoints who's best for the job.
In an election, the community decides on their mods.

I might try it

we can nominate people who we think will do a good job (you're allowed to nominate yourself or anybody else), but there's no actual voting involved. the SE staff make the actual decision.

@goldPseudo Are you planning on nominating yourself?

12:38 AM
i don't plan to nominate myself, but if someone nominates me i'll accept it.
i had my hands full moderating at islam.com.

:)

takes time away from my actual asking and answering, which i'm usually pretty slow about anyway.

@goldPseudo Ahhh... Honestly I would love to mod here. I have the time, I would think that I'm very comfortable with the SE engine, and I think I can help the site flourish....
Of course, I see many others that would be fit for the job also.

well I am still committed to Islam.com, but I owuld like to try it out , SE is new for me

@AlUmmat Yeah... it seems you're pretty active at Islam.com too...

12:44 AM
"Whoever takes the responsibility of judge, or is appointed as judge between the people, then he has been slaughtered without a knife."

I am currently trying to improve it with the help of one of the administrators, but I am also committed here because I want to see an Islamic site on SE And I always try to help Islamic communities grow online. @goldPseudo what do you mean?

@goldPseudo Great quote.
I need to start writing these down :-)

I booked marked it

(moderators are not quite qadi, but i think the parallel is close enough. judging between people is a big responsibility.)

12:48 AM
@goldPseudo You're correct...

were do you get your quotes?

that's a hadith from jami'a tirmidhi.
hasan.
i could dig up the direct link if you really want it.

Just looked at Programmers.SE. Seems that I love answering off-topic questions :-) programmers.stackexchange.com/a/153321/34364

@goldPseudo Please do, I will trade you in exchange a site which has wisdom like quotes , Islamic .

1:01 AM
Here is the link , I know the first quote might interest you. katinkahesselink.net/sufi/quotes.html

Great links both of you. Thanks!

:)

down to 29.3 questions per day average. our numbers are still looking good though.
we got the vast majority of our questions on the very first day. no surprise there.
and we're up to 21 avid users now.
114/222 committers active. broke the halfway mark there.

great
that sounds great

1:17 AM
i'm tempted to ask a question on meta.
"The prophet discouraged people from asking too many questions. Should we do the same?"
2
just to see what sort of responses i'd get.

Well my response would be "follow"
you can ask it I will upvote it

i wouldn't want someone to take it too literally and try to sabotage the site though :p

@goldPseudo I'm going to start keeping track of Quran ayat and Hadith that I like.
The hadith you gave was my first post.

do not worry I will try to explain it if it does happen, what do you think of the question @Dynamic?

@AlUmmat He's just asking for trouble :-)
Gotta go. Salam

1:25 AM
wa alaikum salaam
@NesreenA Asalamu wa alaikum, @goldPseudo what is the citation for that hadith?

wa3alakum assalam

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1325] sunnah.com/tirmidhi/11/5
or are you talking about the "too many questions" one? i don't have that one handy, would need to look it up.

now do you have a good explanation to back up your question?

"O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you..." [5:101]

wow

1:40 AM
i don't know that the prophet actively discouraged people asking questions, but it is well established in sunnah that he disliked it (mostly because when he answered them, they became binding on the people, and he disliked making things too hard for them, i believe)

perhaps somehow you can add this quote "Asking good questions is half of learning"

which is the most common explanation of 5:101 that i know of.

does anyone knoe what an eu·nuch is? i never find hadiths about being gay and this word always comes up what does it mean

it's a man who's been castrated.

people always ask questions about sexuality and i always hear three arguments one gay is always haram even if they dont commit adultery 2 its okay as long as they do not commit adultery and three its okay to be gay as long as you get married ( which i know is wrong)
i dont know which to tell people since not many hadiths come up
somone who has an essay about gay in islam always says eunuch which i dont see the connection with gays
im probably going to ask this question.

2:02 AM
Salamun aleykum

W alaikum salaam

I think we are getting good questions on the site. More people started to participate.

Alhamdulillah

yeah, i'm rather impressed so far.
i was half-expecting it end up just as a link-farm for islamqa.
asking the same questions and cut-and-pasting the same answers.

:)

2:04 AM
but we've got some interesting and original questions here already.

yes.
So, when will public beta begin?

theoretically after private beta's run for seven days.
God willing.

Is this a good question
0
Q: I need some citations

Al UmmatI have been tolled once that it is not good to whistle after Maghrib because it attracts the Shayateen/bad jinn to you, are there any hadith/s on this?

which would put it at next tuesday.
it's a good question. i made some edits which fix up the grammar a bit.
you just need to approve them.

I did thank you, and good bye guys, Asalam wa alaikum

2:11 AM
wa 'alaykum assalaam

aleykum salam
Magrib -> Evening ?

literally means sunset. in this case, refers to the fourth prayer of the day.
well, actually, the question could be referring to any time after sunset, rather than after the prayer itself.
either interpretation is valid.

8 hours later…
10:16 AM
a great fun way to read online quran. quran.iloveallaah.com/flash

10:44 AM
@Ashu its time we had The Holy Quran in HTML5.. :)

@PowerInside hehe ... yeah

3 hours later…
1:46 PM
Asalamu wa alaikum

2:27 PM
@AlUmmat Asalamu wa alaikum

@Ashu how are you doing

@AlUmmat im fine how are you....by the way star the link on the right , the one which has got two stars. that is an important question

@Ashu Alhamdulillah, the one about the tags?

@AlUmmat yes brother, thank you

@Ashu You are welcome
@Dynamic it seems you are going around and editing bad posts, good job :)

3:09 PM
Asalamu wa alaikum @goldPseudo

wa 'alaykum asslaaam

how are you today?

good. still need my coffee though.

:)
I try to get off of cofee'
it is bad for your body, but i do understand :)

it tastes good. of all the things i consume that are bad for my body, coffee is probably one of the better ones.

3:14 PM
yes, it is just like chocolate which is good if you consume it moderately
How about you try Turkish coffee in the morning, you drink only a tiny but it goes a long way

turkish coffee is good, but i rarely drink it. no place nearby sells it that i know of, and i'm too lazy (and tired) to make my own in the morning.

:)
I remember ether you or someone else telling me that there is someone who actually builds this site, do you know who it is?

if you mean design, the StackExchange team has a professional site designer who does all the actual work. i don't remember his name offhand.

yes

3:29 PM
ah, there we go. Jin Yang is the creative director.

thanks

so far as i know, when the site looks like it's going to get out of beta, he'll just scour the meta to see if there's been any discussion on what sort of design we want.

so how long will it take to go out of beta?

that really depends on how long it takes for us to get our numbers up when we go public.
God only knows how the future will unfold.

Yes

3:36 PM
the other beta site i'm involved in has been in public beta for almost two years now.
many sites either get out of beta before then, or it becomes obvious that they're not viable and get shut down and/or merged into another site.

so how can we get our numbers up?

pretty much same as we've been doing. ask good questions, give good answers. people will stick around if they think this is a good site for asking questions, God willing.
as far as i know, there's a 90 day minimum for public beta, so we won't graduate before then at the earliest.

ok

our numbers are still looking good for now.
our answer rates are right on target, and the quality is improving every day.

what about the site views?

3:47 PM
i wouldn't worry about those right now.
they'll be low since we only have the private beta members viewing it right now.
once we go public, they'll increase dramatically, God willing.

Insha'Allah

we've got a few users on the verge of getting 1000 rep, which will give us our own moderators.
God willing, that'll make a big difference to keeping the site organized.
(at least during the private beta)

Insha'Allah
new question has been asked

Q: Do women get half in inheritance than men do?

The crocodile hunterThis is commonly believed, a siters gets half of what her brother gets from her father property if he dies. This is widely accepted. But I have also heard a scholar say, if the inheritance is in the presence of the father who is still alive, the sister get the same as what her brother get. But if...

I am looking at this site imamreza.net/eng/imamreza.php?id=7340
is my answer ok

A: Do women get half in inheritance than men do?

Al UmmatHere are what some scholars say about this: The reason that the inheritance of man is more is because the upkeep of women is upon the shoulders of men. In other words, aside from the fact that a man must look after himself, he is also responsible for the upkeep and expenses of his wife ...

I get the feeling that I am missing something
what would the domain name be after we get out of beta? I am sure it wont be islam.com

4:16 PM
@AlUmmat probably islam.stackexchange.com

@yasar11732 No I mean after we go out of beta, Like stackoverflow is stackoverflow.com not stackoverflow.stackexchange.com

@AlUmmat Not all sites get special domain names.
For example,
I can find much more.

Asalamu wa alaikum @PowerInside
@yasar11732 Well my thinking is that it would be nice to have a separate domain

@AlUmmat I agree, but I don't know what are the rules about getting seperate domain names.
Since islam.com is taken, we could stuck with this domain name.

Wa alaikumusalam @AlUmmat

4:24 PM
@PowerInside how are you doing you seem new here?

@AlUmmat Yes I'm fine. Yeah I am new here.. I got invitation in my email today to private beta and I'm hooked to this site. :D

@PowerInside Alhamdulillah
@yasar11732 how we use islam.co.cc

Robert Cartaino on October 05, 2010

Friday night we rolled back the domain name of our first out-of-beta website. After less than 24 hours of existing on the internet, nothingtoinstall.com was reverted to its original public beta name – webapps.stackexchange.com.

We’re sorry for springing this on you at the last minute but – at least at the time – it felt like circumstances didn’t give us much choice.

With deep concerns about domain name choices for the 20+ ongoing public betas and some negative feedback about breaking up the network into smaller domains, we made the snap decision to roll back the nam …

the general policy is to keep everything tied to the *.stackexchange.com name.

Yeah I agree.. @goldPseudo I don't see anything wrong with islam.stackexchange.com. But we could still use a shorter top level domain name.. just so it is convenient.

even if we do get our own unique domain name, it'll likely just redirect to islam.stackexchange.com anyway.
some sites do, some sites don't. i think it mostly depends on how popular the site becomes, and whether any good domain names are available.

4:37 PM
yeah, www.islam.se would have been perfect. But its taken, sadly.

i doubt they'd ever seek anything outside of the .com namespace.
(at least not for an english language site)
hrm. the tag seems a bit vague.
"etiquette" or "adab" is probably a better fit for these questions.

Islamic rules may not just be adab but all adab comprises of islamic-rule? for eg the question that islam.stackexchange.com/questions/343/… is tagged with "islamic-rule" but obviously not something relating exactly to "adab"/etiquette

yeah, but i think that summarizes the issue I have with "islamic-rule". it could mean anything.
the question on front page is clearly an adab question, so i have retagged it.

Q: How to deal with bad coworkers and fellows?

Startup CrazyAssalam O alaikum. Almost all of us come across people who say bad things and try to stop you from doing your work, make fun of you etc. Please let me know to which extend can we go to counter them as sometimes ignoring them does not matter to them but listening to crap comments increases your bl...

the swearing question, i'm not sure if that would fall under adab or not. we may want a new tag just for oaths and the like, but i'm not sure if there would be enough questions to warrant it.
we can probably synonym etiquette to adab when we get access to mod tools. there's probably a lot of people who wouldn't recognize the arabic term.
working on the tag wiki now.

4:57 PM
What was the Arabic word for "speaking from someone's behind?"

Salaam.

@Gigili We Alaykum Salam

I think two questions need to be closed.

Q: Are women allowed to work in Islam?

SongoSalam Alaykom I was just wondering if Muslim women are really allowed to work? Are there conditions where it is allowed? What if the husband's income isn't enough for the family? Thanks in advance.

@yasar11732 what

4:58 PM
@Gigili wa alaikum salaam
@Gigili why
I think they are good and appropriate for this site
they are not off topic

@AlUmmat When I talk badly about a person while he is not present, what do you call it in Arabic. It is like gossip.

Since there' no single correct answer to it, I'm afraid the answers spread wrong information in the internet.

backbiting. ghibah

@yasar11732 backbiting you mean?

@AlUmmat Yes

5:01 PM
@AlUmmat Thanks! It kind of bothers me when a post isn't visually appealing, so I get to work :-)

@yasar11732 الغيبة @goldPseudo provided the transliteration

What do you call it in Arabic? -> Ghibah ?

@yasar11732 yes

What do you think @gold?

i think the scope of the questions should be focussed a bit more.
they're not inherently bad for the site, but we need to know where the questioner is coming from.

5:02 PM
@Dynamic you are welcome, I am kind of lost, why are thanking me?

@Gigili please check my answer and tell if anything is wrong islam.stackexchange.com/a/483/61

i.e., why does the questioner think that women working is prohibited? which school/scholar/interpretation are we answering here?

@goldPseudo Is it important why the OP things it's prohibited?
AFAIK, such questions that has no correct answer are not welcomed on different SE sites.

Maybe because it sounds like more of a cultural thing

@Ashu I will now.

5:04 PM
@AlUmmat You said "Good Job" and I said Thanks!
2 hours ago, by Al Ummat
@Dynamic it seems you are going around and editing bad posts, good job :)
:-)

@Dynamic oh ok sorry I didn't remember at first

@PowerInside Yes, that and they have their own opinion in every sect.

I think it depends on the question. give me a minute to actually read the one under discussion.

> Muslim women are not forbidden from going out in the community, working, or visiting relatives and female friends, if there is no objection from their guardian/husband and they are covered and behave and speak according to Islamic guidelines and, if necessary, escorted by their Mahram [...]
I think the same think holds about men, so I see no need to mention that part @Ashu.

@Gigili yes no one is saying no
This is like the question is women inferior to men

5:07 PM
the "...in Islam" part is vague, since there is really no single interpretation of Islam that is global.

But your answer makes sense to me, because that's what I see in the society.

there is no real criteria for determining a correct answer from a wrong one.

@Ashu: Also, you might want to change "her" to "their" here: "Muslim Women Have the Right to Go Outside of Her Home"

what the question is asking is fine, but it needs to be worded to better focus it.

The question is fine on its own, but there's no correct answer as I said.

5:09 PM
i sorta touched on this in my meta post here: meta.islam.stackexchange.com/a/125/22

Look at the answers, one says yes, one says no, one says it depends.

yeah, it's essentially a "list question", albeit one with better-than-one-line answers.
i brought this issue up way back during Commitment. let me dig up the post.

Q: Islam: Should requests for rulings and/or fatawa be permitted?

goldPseudoOne common feature I've seen on most if not all Islamic Q&A sites is a slew of rulings requests (especially "Is such-and-such permissible in Islam?"-type questions) Although such questions seem to be within the scope of "Q&A site for the Muslim community who have questions about Islam", ...

@yasar11732 I do not think this is a matter of backbitting
0
Q: When backbiting is allowed?

yasar11732Ghibah (backbite) is forbidden in Islam. I remember there being some exception to this, but I can't remember what were they. For example, if your boss ask you your opinion about your co-worker, is it ok to point their flaws? Or what else is acceptable?

I am not sure if I have used the correct English word, but I am talking about Ghibah.

the answer is you should have your co-worker with you when you tell your boss what you think of him

5:14 PM
You can put that as an answer :)

@goldPseudo The accepted answer makes some sense.

the links to the related judaism.SE posts are also worth a read. they have dealt with much the same issues as we are facing.

@yasar11732 Gibah is a word derived from the root word Gaibh which means that which is hidden

Yeah, I'm reading.

@yasar11732 so it means you are talking about him when he is not around, and in a bad way.

5:17 PM
@yasar11732 The word in arabic means "unseen" as far as I know.
The question should be "When is talking behind someones back allowed?"
@yasar11732

it is totally haraam

i think the question could be better understood as "What forms of talking about someone are not considered ghibah, if they are not present?"

@Dynamic even when it is true I believe it is called slandering

@goldPseudo Yep. Sounds a lot better.

All edits are welcome :)

5:19 PM
@AlUmmat No. Slandering is saying something untrue about someone.

oh well this is no doubt not right

Questions that appear to be requests for personal practical advice will be either edited to more general wording or closed

I will get some hadiths

i believe i've heard somewhere that it is permissible to point out flaws in a potential spouse to the person who is about to get married, so long as it's honest.
(no references handy, hence why i'm saying it in chat rather than posting an answer)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Do you know what is backbiting?" The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know better." Thereupon he said, "Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes." It was said to him: "What if my (Muslim) brother is as I say." He said, "If he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering."

[Muslim].

وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ “أتدرون ما الغيبة‏؟‏” قالوا‏:‏ الله

5:23 PM
i have suggested some edits to the question.

@goldPseudo Accepted your edits.

It does look much better

i've had much more practice reworking much worse questions on the other site. :)

@goldPseudo What other site?

islam.com

5:27 PM
@AlUmmat seems to be active there too.

very active

wow islam.com looks so like a stackexchange site..

yes it is running osqa
which is like a clone of stackexchange sites

I can't believe I've missed this before...

what do you mean?

5:30 PM
I like SE themed Q&A sites..
:)

ok :)

6:02 PM
do we really need a tag?

I think the Haram and Halal tag can go under sharia

Yeah I am not sure if can be used in questions anyway.. doesn't make sense. sounds better!

I like your tag wiki edit @goldPseudo

i figured i could keep it simple enough with the right quotes.

Alhamdulillah

6:16 PM
do you think would apply to the Ghibah question? since it's asking more about "is this permissible" than "is this appropriate behaviour"?

yes
it would

Assalaamu 'alaykum, @Ershad.

@goldPseudo Walaikkum assalam wa rahmatullah

Salaam.

@Ershad Asalamu wa alaikum

6:27 PM
@AlUmmat Walaikkum assalam wa rahmatullah
How are you guys today?

Alhamdulillah

A question regarding SE: Why is there a character limit ?

@Ershad a character limit? in what?

While posting answers

@Ershad what is the limit?

6:32 PM
@AlUmmat I don't remember exactly but sometimes it is a problem. I guess someone else have the same too. i.e. he should remove some details which might be vital.. to fit into the character limit. Or is it possible for the same person to answer the question twice?

Is there a character limit in posting answers?
I don't think I've ever run across it.
I know there's a character limit in posting comments.

Yes, because you're supposed to summarize the sources you've found.

That's to discourage people from drowning out the actual Q&A with long discussions in comments, afaik.

That one is to discouraging copy-pasting.

answers should probably be kept short on principle. if an answer to a question is long enough to approach any character limit, it's probably too broad of a question in the first place.
