Q: What is the proof of the names of 4 great angels?

hkBattousaiThe name of Jibril (also know as "Gabriel" in English) is indeed written in Quran. But the names of Azrael, Mikhail and Israfil are not. How do we know actual names of these angels? Did we Muslims imported angel names from other religions?

I think it is better.

:)

"How do we know the names of the angels that aren't mentioned in Qur'an?"
or just "How do we know the names of the angels?"

How do we know the names of the angels? -> Even better.

no
I think it is just fine
@goldPseudo that can be a new question

12:06 AM
I am not sure I understand what is being asked in this question:

Q: Knowing the health of a hadith

Startup CrazyI read this hadith from a website. Please tell me a place where I can search for this hadith's health. Thanks Narrated Abu Huraira: "I heard Allah's Apostle saying. "All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose the...

sounds like a question from someone who doesn't really understand how to identify an authentic hadith from a weak one, but knows enough to know that there is a difference.

there is no such hadith
I looked
atleast not in Bukari
check and see

an appropriate answer would probably mention that anything from Sahih Bukhari is considered about as authentic as possible, maybe with a brief synopsis of Imam Bukhari's authentication procedures.
and a confirmation that the hadith in question is actually as quoted.
(it's poorly referenced. it should be book 73, not book 78.)
well...book 73 on sunnah.com. book 78 in arabic, apparently.
at least that's how i'd write it. i may do so if i have time tonight (God willing).

12:29 AM
should this question be closed

@AlUmmat IMO, it is a perfectly valid question.
Gotta go.

@Dynamic salaam wa alaikum

Why should we close it?
I think it is valid.

good question, but could be worded a bit better. the "Which of these is true?" part implies that there is no difference of opinion in the matter across the whole Muslim world.
i.e., that there is in fact an objectively "true" answer.

maybe thats it

12:50 AM
Is community allowed to change FAQ?

yes I think so

We could change this part: islam.stackexchange.com/faq#dontask

The FAQ is customized per site after there's been enough discussion as to what should go into it. I'm honestly not sure if we can do it ourselves with enough rep, or if it has to be done as a support request from the SE staff.

I answered this question

Q: Are the orders of Rasul only valid in his own era, or are they universal and independent of time?

hkBattousaiWhen rasul orders something, does it becomes a law which is valid until the end of world? To be specific, I see three possiblities: Orders of a rasul are absolute. They are independent of time and place. They must be applied as is no matter what. Orders of a rasul are independent of time and p...

I need some references though
I will just post one of the examples in the question
Zakat is the order of Allah without any doubt. But Allah didn't give us the details of this ibadat. Muhammad (pbuh) made it clear and ordered us to give 2.5% of our wealth as zakat. Was this percentage chosen according to the economic conditions of his time? Must we still use the same ratio, or must we recalculate it?
what would you say about it

1:19 AM
I would have trouble answering OP exactly as worded, since I'm not convinced 1, 2 or 3 is exactly right.
Which is probably my fundamental problem with the question (especially with the "Which of these is true?" aspect)
3 is closest to my understanding

I think it is a combination of all 1 2 and 3

2:00 AM
assalaamu 'alaykum, nesreen. how you liking the site so far?

wa3alakum isalam i really like it a lot more than the other website
its more organized and it kind of intimidates me i try my best to add proof and give my best effort into every question

this is the type of site i was hoping islam.com would be back when i joined there.
we'll see how it holds up to the public when we get out of private beta, God willing.

i dont think theres any chance of that anymore i went back yesturday cause i felt guilty that no one was answering but it was a mess
all my hard work in those tags boom! month later like 6 more pages
i hate being the only one to organize but this website has a lot more people to help

the biggest difference (i think) is that there's a lot more people here who actually understand how the system works.
rather than treating it like any other forum.

yes i agree but i hate how im not allowed to edit anything yet it makes me feel like an amature :(

2:09 AM
i still don't have full edit priveleges.
i can make edit suggestions. they have to be peer-reviewed and approved before they go through though.

haha thats a shoker you would be a big help heres the deal ill give you a couple thumbs up ;)
shocker*

i'm not posting a lot of answers yet. i focus on quality over quantity.
i'll spend hours on a single answer. takes a while, but i'm sure i'll get my rep.
(God willing)
most of my activity has been on the meta, where rep isn't awarded.

do you know what a bounty is?
its always on the bottom of a page 'there are no bounties" or "start a bounty

it's a bit like the "Award Points" system.

öhh, do you loose points for it too?

2:17 AM
you can put a bounty on a question, and then the best answer to the question will get the points (deducted from your own).
129
Q: How does the bounty system work?

A. Rex What is a bounty? What is the "Featured" tab on the homepage? How can I search for questions that have a bounty attached? How do I start a bounty? When can I start a bounty? How long is the bounty period? How do I award a bounty? Can I award a bounty to my own answer? What happens if there's no ...

ok thanks!

2:35 AM
You're doing a good job @goldPseudo Keep it up

2 hours later…
4:35 AM
Activity seems to have dwindled a lot today.
Compared to yesterday.
I guess we're all over our "new site excitement".

5:28 AM
Assalaamu 'alaykum, Ashu.

@goldPseudo that happens on all sites. same thing happened on chemistry as well as biology
@goldPseudo Assalaamu 'alaykum

Yeah, I was expecting it to happen. Still would've been nice if we could keep up the momentum.
We got off to a nice start, I'm thinking.

@goldPseudo well once the site becomes popular the users will increase. happens with all sites. Yeah we are off to a nice start area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/14922/islam
@Gigili Assalaamu 'alaykum

'alaykum salaam, @Ashu.
How long is private beta?

7 days, God willing.
I believe it can be extended, depending on whether or not the SE team consider the it ready for the public yet.

5:45 AM
I think we are not ready yet.

Right now, not quite. But we're barely into day three yet, still plenty of time left God willing.

Right.

@goldPseudo but for those 7 days enjoy partial mod powers :)
@Gigili we just have to keep up to good work thats all

@Ashu Indeed. It's great to be able to vote to close and such things at a low rep.

Also one work that needs to be done is clear our the redundnt tags... there are lot of them for no reason... also lots of tag synonyms like [prayer] and [praying]

5:54 AM
yeah, redundant tags are (or will be) a problem.
the trick is figuring out which ones are actually redundant, and which ones only seem redundant because we haven't asked enough questions to warrant it yet.

@Gigili you seem to be good in maths bro.

Do you know how to make a question CW other than asking a mod which we do not have yet?

@goldPseudo yeah but still some tags just seem plain stupid

@Ashu Thank you!

@Gigili yes just clik on community answer while writing an answer

5:58 AM
@gigili, except for the 'edit it too much' or 'answer it thirty times' autoconverts, i don't know.

see this

that works for answers, but questions don't have the checkbox.

That's for an answer. I asked about questions.
Yes, and I want to make the meta question on useless tags CW.

Q: How can we make this site more friendly to non-Muslims?

FlimzyI'm beginning to notice there is a fair amount of Muslim terminology that is quite foreign to non-Muslims. Take for example this recent question, and the comment that immediately followed: Al-wal and bara? What are they? This is only one example. One needn't look far at all to see many ot...

Haha, that's my comment and I AM Muslim!
I really can't read Arabic words written English properly.
Assuming they are Arabic words.

wouldn't it be better to keep the question and answer separate?
i.e., keep the question as is, and then post and accept your own answer, marked CW, which actually accumulates the tags?

Ah yes. That's a good idea.
Do you consider a useful tag?

6:09 AM
nope

nope

and [phrase] tag too is useless

0
Q: Removing some tags

GigiliGoing through tags, I noticed there are some tags that don't make much sense. I think we should list them here so that we can avoid using them and they'll be automatically deleted. I'll post a community wiki answer and everyone can edit it to add and remove tags.

5

well how do you type that tag button

"honorifics" might be a useful tag for that question, but i don't know how many questions we could possibly have on that topic.

6:10 AM
[tag : name]

[\tag:tag-name]

Without space

without \

What about ?

i'm not crazy about "love" but i suspect we'll get a lot of questions that will want to use it.

6:12 AM
@Gigili so we are supposed to enter tags we find useless in the CW ans?

I think the latter could be considered Haraam/Halal.
@Ashu Yes.

@goldPseudo we could keep a general tag relationship

yeah, "relationships" would be where i lean.
that's the one i tried to implement at islam.com, not sure how well it stuck.
hrm. looks like it's pretty well established.
i think it ended up absorbing "family" and "marriage" though, which probably warrant their own tags.

so we have a competitor - islam.com ;)
well didnt know about it

i found out about it when it was brought up during Commitment.
i try my hand at moderating it every now and again, but with the majority of the users not really grokking the difference between an OSQA-powered Q&A site and a typical internet forum, moderation is a full-time job over there.
it helps me to appreciate the whole "build a community of people, at least some of which actually understand StackExchange, before even trying to build the site" process of Area51.

6:21 AM
yeah you are right....well does & make sense? people edit questions to add random tags and someone even accepts the edit.

"reciting" isn't bad, but i think it's a bit ambiguous.

Translation? I think we won't any other questions to be tagged so.

"reciting" would probably be better tagged as either "dhikr" or "tajwid", depending on the question.
or even just "quran"

@Gigili well il add it to the redundant list of tags then.

Could one of your star that meta question for future reference?

6:24 AM
@goldPseudo well i had just kept quran then some guy addedtags
@Gigili sure il star it

(be glad people aren't just re-typing their question into the tag field)

@goldPseudo lol

sin-or-not might seem bad, but just imagine having to deal with separate tags for "sin", "or" and "not".

Thank you.

people arent so dumb.. cmon ;)

6:28 AM
@goldPseudo Haha, then the whole question should be added. [tag:?]

after all the moderating i did on the other site, i doubt you could throw any tags at me from here that would shock me.
i didn't even bat an eye at .

@goldPseudo Man of STEEL , HUH?
well wat tags did you encounted on that site?

lol, thats funny :)

Very amusing, must be moderating that site.

6:32 AM
(for the question: "Is crab halal to eat?")

wats fud?

i think it's a misspelling of food.
and i'm not even getting into users who just type their username into the tag field.
or random numbers.

@goldPseudo oh yeah ;P .... i should try out that site :)

@Ashu Instead of playing games, that is.

is still my favorite though. just because it's so ridiculously localized.

6:36 AM
I don't think it happens here at that level, people are rather educated an whatnot.

it's a side-effect of not needing a minimum rep to create tags. literally anyone can make one.
well, anyone who's got more than zero rep.

more tags over there like

those ones are broken. we try to remove them but we can't.

I think we need this reminder, there are a lot of answers with 0 votes:
Jeff Atwood on October 19, 2010

Have you ever wondered why the vote buttons and score are so prominent on every Stack Exchange question?

Putting voting front and center is very much intentional; it is how …

good content is voted to the top wrong or incorrect content is voted to the bottom users who consistently provide useful content accrue reputation and are granted more privileges on the site

wrong or incorrect content is voted to the bottom users who consistently provide useful content accrue reputation and are granted more privileges on the site …

well i think we know about this because we have been active on some other SE site for a relatively considerable time

6:43 AM
i'm very picky about my votes.
i'm more likely to vote up questions than answers.

@goldPseudo same here but if i find a work of great research then i do upvote

if i find a work of great research, i'll upvote, but only if i can confirm the research.
if it cites references and has sound logic, i'll upvote.
(even if i disagree with the conclusion)

when did islam.com start?
people dont seem to have much karma over there

back in january, i believe.

Well, I mostly upvote to neutralize unfair downvotes.

6:47 AM
it used to be a regular forum, then they switched to the OSQA system.

@Reza assalam waalaikum

the karma system is scaled differently than what we're used to here.
upvotes only give the poster +1 karma, rather than +5/+10 reputation like we'd get here.

I have to go, bye.

bye

Q: Feature request: Islamic disctionary

Al UmmatI will like to request that we have a Islamic dictionary, where people can go and look up Islamic terms and get definitions. Maybe we can put a link to one in the FAQ?

@SamehKamal how are you today

1:51 PM
@goldPseudo Asalamu wa alaikum

wa 'alaykum assalaam

@AlUmmat Alhamdulliah , I'm fine, What about you ?
@AlUmmat Hope you excuse me for my bad English, My native is Arabic and I'm bad in English :)

@SamehKamal Alhamdulillah, soryy I didn't notice , I am also Arabic

Okay, Are you a scholar ?

@SamehKamal no, why do you ask?

2:04 PM
@AlUmmat Nothing, I just wanted to know, hope that don't bother you ! JazzakAllah Khayran for your great effort and answers

@SamehKamal no it is ok

Hello, Tim. How are you enjoying the new site so far?

3:49 PM
wow, empty chat room
as-salaamu 'alikum, by the way :)

4:00 PM
wa 'alaykum assalaam

assalamu alaykkum

wa'alaykum assalaam

how are you doing, brothers?

wa'alikum as-salaam
alhamdulillah bi khayr
how about yourself?

i'm heading off to work soon.

4:06 PM
I am fine too, Alhamdulilah

just waiting for my laundry to finish laundering so i have clean pants.

@goldPseudo what time is it over there? it's nearly lunch time here, I'm knee-deep in code at work.

just after ten here. i normally start work at 10:30.
i would be heading out right now, but they appreciate me wearing pants more than they appreciate me being early.

hahaha...

hopefully i'll be able to actually get some work done today, instead of spending all my time staring at the screen trying to formulate Q&A in my head.

4:15 PM
seriously. new SE sites can be surprisingly addictive.

this site has become very distracting for me.

I actually closed my windows yesterday so I could get some work done.
the problem is when you feel personally responsible for the quality of the site -- which is a good thing -- but not something you can achieve alone.

true.
i'm actually surprised that i've posted more questions than answers so far. i was expecting to be exactly the opposite.

that's awesome. It means you've learned a lot about yourself through the site :)

and i'm actually not disappointed in the answers i'm getting (yet).
which is always a good sign for a Q&A.
the only two answers i've posted so far are mostly cut-and-paste from islam.com

4:18 PM
Really? I find the general quality of answers is quite poor (but improving).
still getting lots of opinions, lots of I-don't-know-where-this-comes-from, stuff like that.

the "Is the prophet sinless?" question hasn't given me much i really can sink my teeth in yet, i admit.

With such a broad spectrum of Islam (sunni, shia, ahmadi, sufi, qadiyani, etc.), we cannot survive without a razor focus on proofs.
Yeah, I don't have my notes on the answer to that, sorry, I can't answer it at the moment.
Please ping me if nobody responds sufficiently, I can track down my notes for you and see what they say.

my coin collection one quoted a good reference
although i would've preferred something directly from hadith

Ansari's ayah seems pretty clear and direct on this topic

and the top answer on the mormon question is interesting (even if it's not from a muslim perspective)
i upvoted ansari's answer. it's good.

4:23 PM
It's Qur'an, it's hard to top that...

it's mostly interpretation based on a single ayah. i would prefer more corraborating evidences.

have you ever studied usool-ul-fiqh?

not in significant detail. i focus mostly on the primary sources myself.
quran and hadiths.

okay, I'll spare you the long rant then
the TLDR is "sometimes the methodology of deriving fiqh (usool ul fiqh) is far, far beyond the understanding of the questioner"
things like "understanding something implied through its opposite," for example
so I would say ... getting "a" proof is hopefully enough; more is just bonus.

Ansari's answer is a good answer. The main problem I have with it is that it would be an excellent answer for a slightly different question (i.e., "Did the prophet ever make mistakes?"), but for my question it's merely good.
i'm rather pedantic about stuff like that though.

4:34 PM
@goldPseudo salaam

wa 'alaykum assalaam

how are you doing
pants situation all worked out? :)

doing good, alhamdu lillah
almost. they're clean, but wet.

alhamdulillah :)
re. the sinless answer, i guess my angle was this: sins/mistakes are of three kinds: 1) major sins 2) minor sins 3) just mistakes. i tried to address all 3. The Prophet (saws) is free from major sins because of the ayah (and also the one about him being an uswatun hasana for us), then he didn't persist in minor sins, and he may have made simple mistakes

"The majority of scholars also agree that the Prophet Muhammad (saws) was Ma'sum (free from error) when it came to the major sins" just feels a bit vague to me.

4:40 PM
@Ansari isn't it ijmaa?

especially since "majority" implies that it is not a consensus, which suggests there's a strong argument against ismah somewhere.

gotcha - will research more inshaAllah. perhaps tomorrow.
also no, i don't know of any argument against ismah. most of my answer is essentially a summarization of something by shaykh ibn baz
or shaykh uthaimeen i forget which one

considering the question was explicitly referring to sin, i feel that section could stand to be a bit more fleshed out.
otherwise it is an excellent answer.

no i get it. will dig deeper iA
i love your coins question though
that's the kind of question i think we should be promoting on the site

yeah awesome
mashaAllah

4:45 PM
am quite disappointed at the question quality right now though :(

that's one i've been muddling over for quite a while.
i pretty much agree with the "if it's not for spending, you can treat it like a commodity" essence of the posted answer, but it would be really nice to get some perspective.
so i'll probably leave it open for when we go public

cool
what kind of perspective?

i dunno. anything that i've not considered yet.

@goldPseudo you seem to have a hard time deciding when to accept answers

not really. i'm just very particular.

Q: Difference of Opinion about Ijmaa

ashes999As we've discussed in several other questions, one of the important bodies from which we derive fiqh (legislative rulings) is ijmaa, or consensus of the scholars. I wonder, then, how is it that ijmaa is established? How do you know if there's ijmaa on a topic or not? Particularly because some is...

there we go
awesome :)

@ashes999 i would avoid the tag sharia-law
sharia might be fine
but to append the term law to it just promotes misconceptions

@Ansari not my tag. I would rather use an existing tag then make my own.
Very well, as you wish.....

i have a big problem with islamophobes using the term as if it were a penal code or something
and unfortunately that's the baggage that comes with that term now

very true
I've updated it and all relevant questions (all of three)

jazakallahu khair :)

4:51 PM
wa iyyakum. Very good point by the way.
I had a similar argument for some other tag.

do either of you have any input on the tag?
1
Q: How should the reference-request tag be used?

goldPseudoThe reference-request tag (or whatever we end up calling it), as it currently seems to be used, is really rubbing me the wrong way. As is, it is basically requesting that answers provide references to support their conclusions. A good practice to follow, to be sure, but it's such a general-use ...

your answer seems okay

it seems to have gotten buried in meta, i'm surprised nobody has given their two cents yet.

I think the right answer should be Robert's answer.
"down-vote to indicate poor answers and move on."

A: Please don't remove greetings like "ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM" from questions

AnsariMy two cents: This question is all about perspective. Here's the way I see it: This site is NOT an "Islamic" site! If you accept this, then greetings of salaam, or beginning with the basmalah are not that important. This is a Q&A site about Islam. We're not going to come here to boost our i...

Don't you hate when people DV without any explanation?
wa'alikum as-salaam @NesreenA

it can be annoying, yes.
i'm tentative about explaining my DVs sometimes, if i feel that it'll just start an argument.
that's mostly my islam.com experience talking though.

argument is good. I don't know why people keep complaining about that. SE tolerates strong opinions within their system. It's an awesome feature.
like my question about Taliban. I feel it was very related to Islam. +5, -3, closed as non-constructive.
Three opinions right there.

if someone has obviously put effort into their post, i'll generally put effort into explaining my DVs.
if it's an obviously low quality post, i usually let the DV speak for itself.

@ashes999 Actually, to close a question, you have to have at least 5 opinions :-)

or one moderator.

7:14 PM
I mean differing, or conflicting, opinions

@ashes999 Ahhhh... sorry.
Honestly, I can't wait until we pick the pro-temp mods...

Really? That's a very critical step

@ashes999 How so?

I keep hammering about different types of Muslims; what if the mods don't represent all of us fairly?
extreme example, what if we have all atheist mods? How would that "turn" the site?

oh, this question looks interesting. i might actually spend some time answering it tonight.

Q: What is Sunnah?

DynamicI have a few questions about Sunnah: What is it? Is it an action or belief? Is it mentioned in the Quran? Also, I would like to know where I can read more on it.

self-answered. looks well written too.

7:16 PM
@goldPseudo I wanted to try out the Encyclopedia Stack Exchange feature.
Joel Spolsky on May 21, 2012

Remember this old picture?

What’s that “Blog” circle supposed to be about, you ask? WHERE’S THE BLOGGING?

Since Stack Overflow launched, we’ve been trying to explain that it’s not just a Q&A platform: it’s also a place where you can publish things that you’ve learned: recipes, FAQs, HOWTOs, walkthroughs, and even bits of product documentation, as long you format it as a question and answer.

As Jeff wrote:

if you have a question that you already know the answer to …

@goldPseudo it smacks of rep harvesting when you answer your own question within a minute or two of asking it.
or maybe I should be saying, @Dynamic ;)

answering your own question is specifically encouraged on SE.

@ashes999 I guess so. Like I said, I read the blog post a while ago, and figured "If I'm allowed to do it, then I'll do it" :-)

@goldPseudo yes, if you don't get a good answer; that's why you can't accept it for two days.

that's why they intentionally added an 'Answer your own question' button when you post your question.

7:19 PM
@Dynamic props to you for asking a question on an important topic. But ... I will consider all answers equally and fairly :)
@goldPseudo see previous comment re: accepting in two days

@ashes999 And honestly, I'm not even thinking about accepting my own answer unless it's the only one that makes sense...

@Dynamic don't worry, I won't DV you :)

@ashes999 :-) Good. If I lose 2 rep I might cry myself to sleep tonight lol

@Dynamic my comment alluded to the other meaning of sunnah, i.e. mustahabb, which is a technical definition meaning "rewarded if done but nothing happens if neglected"
@Dynamic my comment alluded to the other meaning of sunnah, i.e. mustahabb, which is a technical definition meaning "rewarded if done but nothing happens if neglected"

i've had a "what is sunnah" question and answer rattling in my head for a while now, if you hadn't posted and self-answered your own question i probably would've done the same instead.
now i just need to stamp out the answer part of it. much easier.

7:25 PM
@goldPseudo did you look at my question about ijmaa? I'm curious to know if it was you who DVed, although I don't think it likely

i upvoted that one, actually.
it's a good question.

Oh, thanks, glad you think so too.

i'll leave it for someone a bit more knowledgeable in fiqh to answer though.

Do you know the answer? I would love a TLDR.
I know how it works in mustalah al-hadith, but that's a very different case.

not really. i remember reading some summaries on it, but nothing referenceable.

7:29 PM
what about a general idea? I'm happy enough to research it myself if I get a clue.

i mostly get stuck enjoying the irony that there's no consensus on what 'ijmaa' means.

hahaha
excellent fiqh joke, +1 :)

but it mostly boils down to "consensus, yes. but consensus of who?"
is it any scholar, is it just particular scholars, or is it the entire ummah that counts towards ijmaa?

ah, I see

@ashes999 I'll add that.

that raises a great related question: does, say, the shia ijmaa include sunni scholars, and vice versa?

yeah, i was just about to bring that up.

awesome, I love how this is a forum for intraislam discussion

i believe the hadith that is used to support ijmaa just says that "my ummah will never agree on an error".
(don't have a reference handy)

I believe so as well.
Wallahu a'lam.

the other issue with ijmaa is whether or not it's time-dependant.
e.g., if everyone agreed on something back hundreds of years ago, but someone nowadays disagrees, is there still ijmaa?

7:47 PM
do you think that should be a separate question?
I think it might play into "100000 scholars said no, 1 said yes today" does that break ijmaa? My hunch is that it wouldn't.
In fact, I hear recalling about a scholar (classical scholar) who compiled a book of "issues with ijmaa"
back in my studying days...that was years ago
@goldPseudo what do you think? Another question or the same question?

@ashes999 I made the edit to my question. Can you check for correctness please?
I think I know what I'm talking about, but I don't always do :-)

@Dynamic link please?
@Dynamic don't put yourself in a dangerous spot Islamically. If you don't know, don't comment :) it's safer for your hereafter.
Nevermind, found it

@ashes999 Oooops... sorry.

+1

@ashes999 :-)
