9:00 PM
Not entirely, @David. You recover it neatly for conservative vector fields :)
I just did that in class yesterday.

@TedShifrin So, would Hubbard be good, say?

Hubbard is not to my taste, but it's to lots more people's taste than my book is. It's extraordinarily idiosyncratic and exercises are uneven.

@TedShifrin Conservative being important.

Well, in $\Bbb R^1$, every $1$-form is closed/exact :P

@TedShifrin What is the name of your book?

9:01 PM
@David: Multivariable Mathematics ....

@TedShifrin yeah in more dimensions, "more things can go wrong"

OK, then definitely I'd'nt be able to study much of mult. calc., I guess.

What really bothered me about Stewart was that he only stuck with 3 dimensions....

yeah, even at the level of continuity

Oh, great, Hubbard isn't available.

9:02 PM
for science/engineering for a first course, @teadawg, that's fine.

Hello my friend @abe

@infinitesimal Hi.

abe?

How are you today?
The first three letters of ABeautifulMind

oh, I was thinking ABM

9:05 PM
Wow, B&N charge a lot more than Abe for Ted's book.

That's because AbeBooks has questionable service/delivery practices

I've never even hoid of them.

@infinitesimal Did you read what they wrote about self pity in the Eng room? Hehe, when I talk about how bad I feel, they often tell me not to self pity. I won't talk to them anymore. They don't get me at all.

@ABeautifulMind No, I don't visit that site.

Just get from Amazon.
@DavidWheeler I think you got the wrong person.

9:08 PM
I'm watching Ted on youtube.

Amazon charges hell of a price.

I bought the international edition of Baby Rudin from AbeBooks, I got the Indian edition

What do you expect from engineers @abe

Ah yeah, the intrepid international editions ...

@infinitesimal What they say is hurtful not because it is true, but because it is untrue.

9:09 PM
They think everthing is practical

I bought a long time ago, a 3-volume "encyclopedia" of math-the section on integration started with a discussion of vector lattices.

The cover states, and I quote, "For sale in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan only"

@Ted OK, any other approach you can recommend for learning forms?

The entire book appears to be photocopied

No doubt, @teadawg...

9:10 PM
I suspect someone didn't get their royalties...

Forms is calculus put together with exterior algebra, which you certainly can learn in an hour, @Balarka.

@teadawg1337 Rudin is everywhere.

Don't waste your time talking to discouraging people @abe

@TedShifrin Reference? Can't study much without peeking into books.

@Balarka: I do not come with lists of references.
You were going to bed, and I need to work on my house.
So I'm outta here for now.

9:13 PM
Cya @Ted

Okay, sorry for being so annoying.
I'm off to bed.

Bye professor
Cya Balarka
The place is sooo quiet without the professor and the whiz kid :-)

I am still here.

How are you feeling today?

Lately still very unstable. OK one moment and very anxious the next. Still trying to stabilise. I need to calm down and keep calming down.

9:17 PM
@ABeautifulMind What are you afraid of?

Did you say you are doing on Wednesday to get meds @abe

@Chris'ssis For example, taps and switches not being turned off, just one example.
@infinitesimal Yes, next next Wed. I made the appointment already.

@ABeautifulMind I've struggled with depression, anxiety, and OCD for most of my life, but I don't have it anywhere as bad as you do. I wish you the best with your recovery

@teadawg1337 You too. I hope you get better to the point where it doesn't affect your studies.
@Chris'ssis I did go out a few times the past few weeks, and I will feel better for a while, but sometimes it will get worse again, it is like a roller coaster!

I need to take a break from the computer screen for a little while, I'll be back in about half an hour or so

9:21 PM
Later pal

Aww, Ted left. I can't comment on his video, now.

I will find the way to get well. I just need time, lots of time, even though I have taken lots of time already.

Take your time and do it right @abe
Inch by inch

Hi @arrowfar.

mm by mm

user116848
9:23 PM
Hi @ABeautifulMind!

@arrowfar What brings you here?

Hi pal @arrowfar

user116848
Nothing. Just lurking.

user116848
@infinitesimal Hey :)

9:24 PM
@DavidWheeler What video did you see?

He would do the Internet community a great service if he edited together his course into a Massive Online Open Course aka MOOC

It wouldn't do any service whatsoever, @infinitesimal, because the exact same material is already freely available on youtube.

Continuity?

Click the next button :)

9:29 PM
So far, he's doing pretty good-the lecture is reasonably "loose", but he's not letting the class bog him down.

The prof can put problem sets into MOOC @MikeMiller
Did you know that?
Reading Aids, exercises, tests and reviews can all be embedded into MOOCs

Anyway, I'm bored with the video, now. Nothing against Ted, I just can see how it's going

@TedShifrin thanks for the help I got it.

@ABeautifulMind Some time ago, someone from a Pentecostal church prayed for me and I was healed. You might try the faith way. Don't worry about what the scientifical mind tells you. The healing is more important than that.

@Chris'ssis Thank you. How is your book?

9:38 PM
@ABeautifulMind All is fine so far. I have some amazing research these days.

@Chris'ssis Science does not necessarily contradict religion. They can be compatible

How so?

How not so is the question.

Example please :-)

Why can't there be supernatural healing? For example.

9:41 PM
Don't answer my question with a question.

For what I stated, the proof is sufficient.
I am going to bed, good night.

Later pal.
I meant no offense @MikeMiller :-)

@DanielFischer Thanks for your help!!! :)

Q: What should I say if someone from the opposite side of the earth says “good morning”?

kzkproThis may sound like a silly question, but I'm having a bit of confusion. I'm not sure what to say. I work remotely and I am a member of a team on the opposite side of the earth. On the chat, when they say “good morning” or “good night”, I get confused about what I should reply because when they...

Woah, where did everyone go?

50 mins ago, by infinitesimal
The place is sooo quiet without the professor and the whiz kid :-)

Q: What kind of topology is this (if it involves non-set operations)

Enjoys MathSuppose we have $\cup, \cap$ defined as binary operations on "subsets" of some set $S$, where "subsets" can be something exotic like substrings of a string. Suppose also that they satisfy analogous axioms for defining a topology on $S$. Then I think the structure could be called a semiring as...

@infinitesimal Ah

10:24 PM
ah, @teadawg is still ice-bound

@TedShifrin I was until this afternoon, it's 60 degrees outside at the moment
The temperature has risen 40 degrees since sunrise

wow ... go frolic :P

20 to 60 :-O

@infinitesimal That's Tennessee weather in a nutshell

Bizarre

10:26 PM
There was a famous Mark Twain line about variability of weather ... but I thought that referred to Boston for some reason.
ah, "If you don't like the weather in New England now, wait a few minutes."

Last winter (2013-14), a supercell thunderstorm rolled through my area and spawned a few tornadoes. In January.

Not the reason I'm returning to the land of earthquakes and drought, but ...

@Ted Hey, at least the weather in CA is predictable :P

well, sort of

I don't miss the Santa Ana winds one bit, though

10:28 PM
well, then, don't come visit :P

You just wanna get closer to da raiders :P

No, skull, I couldn't care less about football
and that's my old home part of the state, not where I'm moving

There's a striking correlation between mathematicians and a lack of curiosity in sports. From what I've seen, at least.

no, not entirely true ... I used to follow some baseball, and I am devoted to tennis

I'm not much of an athletic type. I have very good hand-eye coordination, but I just don't enjoy playing sports.
Tennis is pretty neat, though

10:31 PM
I used to be that way, teadawg, but, yeah, I love playing tennis

nobody should enjoy watching violence in a perfect world

you mean football

Yes
Boxing etc

no argument from me ... not to mention the havoc it's wreaking on players, especially kids, but even adults getting early onset Alzheimers from it

Rugby$\,\land\,$Boxing$\,\land\,$Football$\,\Leftrightarrow\,$Violence

10:33 PM
UFC is the worst

YOu mean all those ands?

Any more problems with Rene @TedShifrin?

LOL, no, skull

Since he/she returned.

It's he.
As I said earlier, rather than commenting on his ill-conceived answer, I just posted a different one. Ultimately, he removed his.

10:41 PM
I left a comment on his answer ;-)

oh, right, you did ... which didn't make any sense to me.
well, in the end, trolling is not helpful

@infinitesimal gasps How could you?

@teadawg: I'm still not sure skull knows any mathematics at all.

@Ted Never thought about it, but I wonder that as well

I guess I should be a politician, if I'm that convincing.

10:45 PM
LOL
Hello @AlexWertheim

oh, that pugnose dog is here ... hi @AlexW

Hello, @teadawg.
Lol, hi @Ted. Bout time I change this picture, huh :)

Hi @quid

It's better than my using my actual picture :)

Hi @infinitesimal

10:49 PM
heya @quid

hello @Ted

I like the picture @AlexWertheim :-)
Sooo cute.

Lol, thanks skull. :)

Yet not fake, like when people use their baby pictures.

Oh, it's plenty fake.

10:52 PM
Spoilers: it's not me at all!
;)

Yeah, Alex isn't that hairy.

To your knowledge, @Ted. =P

True.

I suppose I'm not hard to find though, so that could easily change.

10:54 PM
Any other grad news, @AlexW?

Only bad news, I'm afraid, @Ted. No from your alma mater, and no from UCSD.
It would seem I'm waitlisted at Brown as well.

ah, I'm sorry. As Mike and I have said, I don't understand the game these days. One of my star students is in at Wisconsin, Colorado, out at Berkeley, UCLA, but StonyBrook says maybe. I just don't get it.
I don't know if Brown thinks it is what it was in the 80s ... or not.

No worries. :) I can't say I get it either. But I am aware of the many holes in my application.

Yeah, and my student had a letter from me (four courses his sophomore year, and adviser) rather than from a guy he took a grad course from, just because I knew the latter guy has no clue how to write a decent letter. He did have one (strong) letter from a guy he took a different grad course from.

What made Brown so strong in the 80s?

10:59 PM
It's truly a battle these days. There's no rhyme or reason to me.
I'm just grateful to have the options I do. :)

Well, I haven't talked math with you as much as with Mike and Pedro, so I have only a hunch that you'll do just fine.

If you feel comfortable sharing (I don't know if there's a way to send private messages), what's the name of your student? I can say hello to him at Wisconsin's day, if he's going.

I don't know if he's going ... I didn't ask. When is it?

Tuesday, hehe. :)

Ah, our spring break, so maybe he is. Bryan is his name.

11:01 PM
Stony Brook is weird

Neat! I'll be on the look out for him.

I guess I could email him and ask.

They rejected me from undergrad when most other schools (like Columbia) accepted me

why the hell didn't you go to Columbia, mr eyeglasses?
no financial aid?

I appreciate the confidence. I've got an ambitious math self-study plan starting now, so perhaps we'll get to talk some math yet.

11:02 PM
@TedShifrin I don't have money, yea

Most schools have pretty aggressive financial aid packages, mr eyeglasses.
You'd better hurry up, @AlexW, before I forget it all. I emailed Bryan to ask him if he's going.

That's surprising indeed, @ᴇʏᴇs. Ivy league schools in particular usually give very good aid.

Well, too late now..I didn't know anything about academics and I was doing everything by myself so I guess I might've missed some opportunities
But I'm afraid I would have performed poorly there anyway

Where are you now?

My friend is there and I looked at his problem sets/exams and they are ridiculously difficult (for me)

11:04 PM
Sometimes it's better to go to a smaller school where one will get more attention and thereby do better. But I'm not sure it worked out that way for you, mr eyeglasses.
Columbia is tough, yes.
You wouldn't like most of my problem sets, either, mr eyeglasses :D

There is a high schooler in one of his graduate courses, analytic number theory
She is going to MIT next year

I taught a high schooler who did the same thing. He took 5 classes from me and took several grad courses before going to MIT. Finished his Ph.D. at Princeton and is now unemployed (quite a job with a hedge fund, which he hated).

I feel kind of bad I didn't take more grad courses...next semester I'll be taking my first one

It takes time to mature and get confidence, mr eyeglasses.

Did you ever get the answer to that question about the fractions @ᴇʏᴇs

11:07 PM
Jeez, @Ted. That's a sad story :(

@infinitesimal No, I don't want to talk to that guy

I guess it doesn't have to end sad. But man.

Seems like a good plan @ᴇʏᴇs ;-)

@TedShifrin One of my professors had a student who begged him to be his advisor, and the student did his own thesis without ever speaking to my professor again..he finished his PhD and then went on to work at a hedge fund lol
I have no idea why he begged the prof. to be his advisor when he didn't even work with him

Oh, he's doing fine, @AlexW. I just spent several hours talking to him a few weeks ago. He is one of the smartest people I know. He just needs to find a job that'll make him feel fulfilled (perhaps not too easy), but he doesn't want academia.
Because he needed some adviser, mr eyeglasses :P

11:10 PM
Well, this was at Princeton so I'm just curious why this prof. in particular

Well that's good to hear, @Ted. Sometimes it seems like there are too many sad stories in academia, lol.

oh, mr eyeglasses, we're talking about the same person.
how funny

Stories like these make me worry about getting into a good enough grad school....

@TedShifrin?
Does his name start with a 'B'?

yes ...

11:11 PM
Okay
lol

Well, he did do some work with Conway, I thought.

Yea, Conway told me he was brilliant

He is. He ranks among the top 5 students I've ever taught, and I've had some gems.
Maybe among the top 2 or 3. I'd have to think carefully.

I think the only gem my school has produced in the past 10 years is maybe Joseph Hirsch

I don't know who that is.

11:14 PM
Yea, he's still young
But he got an NSF fellowship

Good for him :)

Took like 10+ PhD courses

Where'd he go for grad school?

Well he got into Berkeley and UChicago and some other great schools, but he was already doing research with a professor here, so he just stayed at CUNY to continue it

hmm, I hope that wasn't a mistake.
I would have unequivocally advised him to go elsewhere.

11:15 PM
Isn't that usually the advice @Ted?

Not so much at the top 10, but, yes, @AlexW.

Why do you say that @Ted?

If you misspelled his name, he got a postdoc at MIT, mr eyeglasses?

Yes
That's him

He even has a lecture on YouTube. Very cool.

11:17 PM
Perhaps he will join MO :-)

Well, if he does good work while at MIT, he should be in great shape.
@AlexW: Bryan says he is going to the UW visitation. I just told him your name :P

There are some real "gems" there.

Lots, skull, lots.
There are a few at MSE, too. ... Just not in chat.

Coolness, @Ted. I'll be the guy who looks like me :)

Ouch :(

11:19 PM
Well, you won't look like that ^^^^

I feel like almost every high-schooler in here knows more than I do, and I'm graduating college soon..

They put on a good show

Well, mr eyeglasses, no, most high-schoolers know nothing. A few of them on here are exceptional. But, on the other hand, we have people graduating with math degrees who are woefully ignorant ... others who are fantastic. I honestly don't know where you stand.
@teadawg: I was referring to university faculty.

I guess it's similar to like people graduating with computer science degrees and don't know how to code simple programs

well, mr eyeglasses, they sure as hell shouldn't be graduating :P

11:23 PM
I just worry about getting myself noticed more than anything... Once some of my work is out there, I'll have an easier time reaching high

You can make up the gap, @ᴇʏᴇs. The only way is to do lots of math. :)

Once you get to a real college, @teadawg, I suspect your serious math teachers will figure it out. For grad school, it's about the GRE and letters of recommendation ... and take the most advanced courses you can.

Amen to that. Take the subject GRE seriously.

Which programming languages are acceptable as a second language for a PhD @TedShifrin?

I always test well, lol

11:24 PM
I have no clue, skull. That surely depends on departments.

It's just... Homework has always been my downfall...

Well, I don't know you, this is true. But, in my opinion, this is a different beast. It's a pain, and if you ask me it's silly.

@teadawg: Once you get to classes where homework isn't busywork, change that. In my more advanced classes, the homework is super challenging, and tests are more routine (well, by my standards).
@AlexW: Bryan says he's looking forward to meeting you :)

But a mediocre subject score can be the death knell of an otherwise good application.

Oh, is @infinitesimal skullpatrol?

11:26 PM
yes, mr eyeglasses

@Ted: please tell him likewise! It looks like it's going to be a very fun visit.

What comprises the GRE, anyway? If there's an essay section, I'm royally boned

No offense taken, @infinitesimal, I was just outi

OK, I have to go cook dinner. Y'all misbehave without me.

11:27 PM
Hi @AlexW

We're talking subject test, @teadawg.

I saw a guy get 98% on the GRE

I'm out.

Bye @Ted

Hello, @Mike. :)

11:27 PM
Bye @Ted

Have a nice dinner, @Ted.

@AlexWertheim: You're out of time, you should just send that email :) (And send me your phone number while I'm at it, so I can bug you while you're here)

@TedShifrin Oh

@AlexWertheim Are you going on a road trip or something

@MikeMiller: oy, right you are. I'll email you tonight, then. (Of course, I would be sad if we didn't meet while I was there.)

11:29 PM
@ᴇʏᴇs 98% is unbelievable

@infinitesimal I wish I could get 100%

That's guaranteed acceptance at ANY uni

I don't know how rigorous the GRE is, but I'd say I might be able to get 85% or so without studying (maybe?)

@Eyes: a good ways away, sadly.

I'll have to start studying more, even if math is second-nature to me

11:31 PM
@teadawg1337: you might want to take a practice test before you conjecture that. :)

@AlexWertheim Is it mandatory for you to visit schools in person?

I'm not saying I'd get an 85% if I took it right now, but maybe in the future

Of course, again, I don't know you. But 85% is an excellent score. To do so without any studying, even better yet.
Not mandatory, @ᴇʏᴇs. Just fun, and greatly preferable. If you're going to be spending five years of your life somewhere...

I mean, I did get a 32 composite on the ACT without studying (34 math)

Sure. I mean no disrespect, @teadawg.

11:33 PM
I wouldn't say I'm smart, just well above average

The ACT is not representative. I got a 35 on the ACT, 36 math, without studying. This isn't meant to be bragging.

I can't boost something that's nonexistent, @MikeM

But just, know what you're up against when you take this test. Many don't study for it, to their own detriment. If you're indeed quite smart (which I have no doubt you are), it's not worth being surprised, is all. :)

On top of my weak calc skills, I'm also concerned about the more obscure topics that compose 25% of it

The subject test is about 50% calculus (multivariable included), 25% linear/abstract algebra, and the rest, elementary probability, complex analysis, topology and logic.
@ᴇʏᴇs: you can do quite well without knowing any of the obscure topics.

11:36 PM
@AlexWertheim What percentile is "quite well"

@Eyes: ~90%, if you're willing to believe it. :)

Well, I need to brush up a bit in topology and probability then

@AlexWertheim Wow, I almost don't believe that

The more questions you can answer, the better of course. But most years, if you can answer ~55 questions with confidence, you'll be in excellent shape.

Does being a member of Mensa help your application?

11:41 PM
I don't think so @infinitesimal
My advisor tells me that letters are the most important thing

I'm guessing you're joking @infinitesimal, but I doubt it. ;)

IQ societies are superficial when placed on an application, imo

Thinking about watching Being John Malkovich tonight, @Mike. How's it stack up to Adaptation?

I see.

I don't know what I'm talking about, though. Perhaps I should just be quiet

11:43 PM
It's the thing that skyrocketed Kaufman's career. It's really very good.
My favorite if Kaufman's oeuvre is Synecdoche, NY; but it's really such a tour de force it's hard to watch casually.

Casually as in, as a casual fan? Or meaning if you're not paying close attention?

I guess I don't mean either of those, just that I find some movies emotionally exhausting, and it's one.

Ah. That, I do understand. I'll have to be prepared to watch it, then.
If you liked Fargo, by the way, you might also like "Burn After Reading" if you haven't seen it.

I haven't! I also pegged A Serious Man as something I might like to watch.

I've never seen that one myself. Looks good, the usual Coen brothers fare lol.

11:54 PM
They definitely have a definitive style.

I'm gonna go. I don't imagine that I'll be missed much today

Aw @teadawg, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings if I did before. I was only trying to give some (to be fair, unsocilited) advice, since the subject test can be a rough go for a lot of folks. Take care!
