9:00 PM
@MeAndMath Not sure, some books in my area costs over 500EUR per piece

user19161
@MeAndMath Yes, the money may not even go to the author, just the publisher.

jeez....this is too much!

user19161
What you see on the market these days are terribly expensive books that teach you little stuff you need to know.

hhh
(it depends so much on the audience: A) if it is small, you may need to charge them much. B) If they are supposed to be wealthy, you may be able to charge them more)

user19161
Great books have gone out of print. That's why the math students are getting worse and worse.

user19161
9:02 PM
@hhh Most math students are poor folks.

@WillHunting Great books have become too expensive.

hhh
@WillHunting I have noticed that many cheap books such as by Springer are pretty worthless, then I have had good cases with small expensive books which are of very good quality

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Some, yes.

I Often use my library.It's really good.

I do not remember but I guess it was Abel who said "Always learn from the masters".
The thing is textbooks should try to make it easy for students to deal with stuff, but then some stuff is inherently hard. Textbooks which try to make inherently hard stuff easy are kind of worthless because that is just not possible.

hhh
9:05 PM
I think you cannot select your books from the prices, I have wasted so much hours in reading cheap bad quality books so I would not pay too much attention to prices (work more efficiently and pay a bit more -- can also be cheap if you count your time). Better have higher quality books than waste time in reading bad quality books...

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, the dumbing down is a dumb thing. The world is more interested in useless paper qualifications than true understanding these days.

user19161
@hhh Yes, first look for the quality and then the price, not the other way round.

@WillHunting Does Singapore qualify as the region for international student editions?
Most of the Wiley, Pearson offices are based there, so I guess it should.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik We have these international editions for many books.

@WillHunting Yup, we have them here too, they are a poor attempt for PR, but are still better than nothing.

user19161
9:07 PM
@JayeshBadwaik If you want to ask about the math education here, I think it is pathetic.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik What is PR?

@WillHunting Public Relations. Showing that we invest so and so much in so and so books and stuff (specially at low cost).

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik It's nice that you can get books cheap there.

@WillHunting Yup, it is nice. Not all though, generally only old ones (5-10 years old).

So are you guys saying that the highest priced books are not necessarily the best quality books?

9:10 PM
@JohnJunior duh Rule of thumb: There are cheap books which are really awful, then there are moderate to high-princed books which are good enough and some are excellent, and then there are those high-priced "bundles" which are used as university textbooks for mass courses like Calculus I and stuff, those are kind of stupid I feel.

user19161
@JohnJunior Price has little to do with quality in any sense of the word.

user19161
Just think of clothing.

Yes, you pay for the name...

user19161
For example, a "John Junior" shirt costs 200 dollars because he is a great designer! :-)

The author's name in the case of textbooks.

hhh
9:12 PM
You need to know where to look at. You can get very high-quality second-hand military surplus clothes in my country (sometimes even new) but if you buy non-military clotches (marketed clotches), they are more expensive. I am so fed up to marketed junk.

Perhaps this analogy is with bookS?
The facade can be highly misleading, you just need to know where to look at.
(I just bought a Nike -bag that was totally junk for 60EUR and then bought a Mil-tec bag for 50EUR and the Mil-tec bag was very-very high quality, Nike bag was totally useless and hard to use -- had to buy it in hurry in airport)

Wouldn't it be a good idea to look at what books the top universities are using?

user19161
@hhh Ah yes, though I would say in the case of sports shoes, usually the branded ones are the best.

user19161
@JohnJunior In most cases, that is a good idea.

user19161
But even the top universities are dumbing things down.

hhh
@WillHunting You mean the sport-shoes with "promated support"? They are junk, they cause a massive amount of injuries to Western people to their knees... barefoot -running rocks, simplicity rocks. There are marathon -runners that use no shoes :)

9:15 PM
@hhh Unlikely, unlike clothes, books are written by authors and have exclusive contracts with publishers and the many of the author generally tie up with famous publishers with draconian policies. The analogy is if books were clothes, and the author a fashion designer, then people do want a book that is written specifically by Ralph Lauren.

@WillHunting And usually those are expensive, no?

user19161
@hhh Ha, anyway I like Asics.

user19161
@JohnJunior Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

user19161
I hope to write three books one day. :-)

user19161
One on algebra, one on analysis and one on geometry and topology.

user19161
9:17 PM
It will cover all topics from undergrad to first year grad level.

I woke up.

hhh
@WillHunting I like no shoes :)

@WillHunting Hmm, I wish there were good books on mathematics at school level in Hindi, Marathi. But for that, first the language has to grow up "mathematically". Or may be the attempt to write books will bring that to the language.

user19161
@hhh Running without shoes is not a good idea. What if you get hurt by a needle?

hhh
Read this book [1], I use minimal shoes because it is better for your health. But in gym or known areas, I use no shoes.

user19161
9:20 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Things you hear about rankings of universities etc mean nothing to me. Or international tests and olympiads. They are a poor characterisation of the state of education.

@WillHunting Hmm, yup, but I think PISA paints a more real picture as compared to others.

hhh
@WillHunting What about if your running style is not natural if you use wrong shoes? What about if your way of thinking is diverted because of poor master? What kind of master you should have? I select the simplest possible solution :)

@hhh Risky one nonetheless. It is not advisable. There is undue pressure on toe joints due to terrain which can lead to mild fractures among other things.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Not really, my country is the winner in PISA over years but sucks in University because they use the language -politics, I tried to study only in English but they failled me in courses because I was supposed to study in Finnish :(

@hhh Hmm. I was talking more about school level education. University level education is kind of so vast that any kind of rankings should be considered irrelevant.

hhh
9:24 PM
...I hate language -discrimination...even though you would like to study everything in English, you are forced to Finnish censorship...

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, some places I feel spend money on making nice buildings and not improving the curriculum. :-)

hhh
they translate English high-quality material to Finnish so it is harder to spot plagiarism and copying, and they rarely use references ... luckily I have now teachers from California Berkeley and they use only English books, hurray :D

@GustavoBandeira OOIII!

@MeAndMath Olá. =)

@WillHunting You should come here and see for yourself hundreds of live examples of the same.
@MeAndMath Some miracle happened? What was the OOO for?

9:26 PM
@JayeshBadwaik why?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I admire many Indian authors I must say.

@JayeshBadwaik just said:HHHiiiiiiii

@hhh You liked my quote. =)

@MeAndMath Ohh, in portuguese? hmm, my bad, I thought, you were exclaiming and I thought I missed a joke right under my nose.

hhh
@GustavoBandeira which quote?
$\bar L = \bar R_c \times M\bar V_c +\bar L '$ arg I need to dig this formula for particle system, I wish they had references

9:28 PM
@WillHunting Okay, may be because you have read the cream? Of course, as everywhere, we too have our share of mediocrity. Who did you read though?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Just for example, I like Malik's Fundamentals of abstract algebra and his Mathematical analysis.

@hhh Angular momentum wrt Center of MAss?

hhh
@GustavoBandeira For sure, I did :)
@JayeshBadwaik Did it come up in the Griffiths?

oi = Hi
olá=hello

9:30 PM
@hhh No. I do not think so, it is more of a mechanics things.

ogá=heggo

hhh
(I cannot now remember where I have read it, Understanding Physics or Griffiths or some other book)

obananaa=hebananabananao

user19161
@MeAndMath In English, oi can mean something like "you are naughty!"

@WillHunting Ohh, okay. I have only read lang, artin and herstein for algebra. and rudin, korner for analysis.

9:31 PM
@WillHunting ...

43 secs ago, by Will Hunting
@MeAndMath In English, oi can mean something like "you are naughty!"
My reason for surprise.

@WillHunting
Oi Oi Oi is the debut album by Boys Noize, released in September 2007. Track listing All tracks by Alex Ridha, except where noted. #"& Down" - 4:19 #"Lava Lava " - 4:02 #"The Battery" - 5:26 #"Oh!" - 5:06 #"Let's Buy Happiness" - 4:53 #"Arcade Robot" - 4:14 #"Deny Selected" - 3:36 #"Shine Shine" - 5:59 #"Vergiftet" - 4:48 #"Superfresh" - 5:27 #"Wu-Tang (The Battery Pt.2)" - 3:21 #"Don't Believe The Hype" - 5:30 #"Frau" (featuring I-Robots) - 5:06 (G. "you are naughty!" "you are naughty!" "you are naughty!" (album)

hhh
@WillHunting It is interesting ... here they are afraid because university rankings in Nordic countries are pretty low
but lower level are pretty high
@JayeshBadwaik why irrelevant university-level -ranking? I think in Finland the problem in university is that we have a massive amount of students like 1000 studenst per one lecturer, it is horrible, under-budgeted...

@hhh Low university rankings for countries outside US has a lot to do with funding (directly/indirectly).

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik I agree, it is in a way total waste of time to study university-level things in Finland, little teachers to many students...

9:37 PM
@GustavoBandeira where do you get these things from?

@hhh 1000 students per lecture?? seriously?? We had 150 students in humanities lectures and around 40-50 students in major lectures and we thought it was quiet a tight fit.

@MeAndMath If you're talking about that album, A friend sent me some years ago.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Haven't calculated but some basic math courses do no have over 200-300 students... it is horrible, I passed the course only having a private teacher...

For upper-level lectures (junior,senior) , the numbers would come down to 15-30-40 per lecture.
@hhh Okay.

@GustavoBandeira hmmm is that good?

hhh
9:40 PM
@JayeshBadwaik In a way it is a chicken-egg problem, it is hard to train more professors with the current system lacking enough good professors...
Now they try to attract more people here by increasing salaries

I never wanted teachers to teach me. I only wanted them to talk about what they were teaching and how it was related to other stuff and how it was important and so on. I was always like "Leave the learning to me".

hhh
but the problem is the language, I wish they had only English, German and perhaps Norwgegian/Swedish in University...

@MeAndMath It's heavy and punchy electrohouse.

@GustavoBandeira what does that mean?

hhh
9:42 PM
@JayeshBadwaik You are my master now :)

@hhh Sorry to come across as sarcastic, but you live in Finland and you don't want stuff in finnish, but are ready for three other languages which are not your national language (Swedish, Norwegian, German)?

Also this one:

@hhh A poor master at that. :P

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik ...Swedish/Norwegian are easy for Finns to learn, everyone speaks English and German is usual knowledge :)

@hhh But what is the problem with Finnish?

hhh
9:44 PM
@JayeshBadwaik It is a language to censor material...

@hhh Censor? As in?

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik You can do very very hard passwords with it :)

@GustavoBandeira interesting...

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Translate material from English to Finnish, a large noise -ratio
@JayeshBadwaik Finnish is like Esperanto, it is easy after that to learn other languages: you speak the same as you write etc.

@hhh Yup, majority of world speaks english, so I guess you would have to, but unless you re bad in either english or finnish, I do not see much problem.

hhh
9:47 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Since there is only about 5 million Finns, there is no sense to have university level education in Finnish, this is what I think.

@MeAndMath Do you go no SP's nightclubs?

hhh
If you see a foreigner here, you never speak finnish -- and even Finns do not speak much Finnish with one another :P

@GustavoBandeira don't even know what is that...

hey guys

@MeAndMath You don't know what a nightclub is?

9:48 PM
@hhh That must be because of big swedish population and similar distortions?

@GustavoBandeira somewhere crowded,noisy and with drinks and nuts...

@math101 hi

@MeAndMath I went sometimes, I guess in my whole life, I went 5 times to it. BUT, I don't like crowds.

I was just gonna say that noone said hi to me but i am not offended in any way
@JayeshBadwaik hey

@MeAndMath My behavior in such place is also strange, I do not dance. I pay attention to the music.

9:52 PM
@math101 people are sometimes too busy making conversation. To live in public chats, you must have a thick skin, in the starting at least.

@GustavoBandeira never went

user19161
@math101 Saying hi or not is more of a "go by the feel" thing. Imagine if there are 10 people in the room. If everyone said "hi" to you the chat transcript will have 11 copies of "hi".

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Sorry? Swedish was the World-power 16th. Norway and Finland are pretty similar countries, Sweden brought us the education here. Finland is an island, we don't speak with Russians. Nordic countries together are larger than Russia in GDB. I am very surprised that I don't live in a country called Sweden or Norden, it is the irony of history to have Finland and separate countries.

@math101 Oh, sorry. I didn't see it.
@MeAndMath Cê é anti-social! Adorei. Haha

I was kidding guys lol

9:53 PM
@GustavoBandeira English!!

@GustavoBandeira só fui numa festa a vida oda...

@MeAndMath English!!

user19161
@math101 OK, but my answer is still valid! :-)

@MeAndMath How was it?

@WillHunting Totally true

user19161
9:54 PM
@meand You asked me where I am from? Singapore. You?

@JayeshBadwaik $\pi = 8$

@math101 stupid

user19161
Hi @matt!

@WillHunting brazil

@WillHunting Hey there : )

user19161
9:54 PM
@MeAndMath Ah!

@hhh Yup, I had read about it. But still I believe, no country is too small to have university education except for (may be) vatican city.

user19161
@Matt You are taking a break now that you have submitted your writing?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik LOL

@WillHunting I'm not sure why I logged in. I'm craving chatting with teddy but his profile says no time for chat these days.

hhh
...it is interesting what happens if EU breaks up, Germany/Netherlands/etc are exploiting the Norden peninsyla with the Gas -line that is a military threat here. It is filled with Russian Atomic-misslines in submarines.

I really wished than Nordic countries could form something like US, we speak almost the same language -- but we miss a leader to fight back against Southern aggressions...

9:56 PM
@WillHunting surprised?

user19161
@Matt You can chat with me. :-)

user19161
@MeAndMath No, I just like to exclaim at everything.

@hhh You can make the revolution!

@WillHunting A short one. : ) Until today, I guess.

hhh
@GustavoBandeira Yes blow up the pipeline :P

user19161
9:57 PM
@Matt Then what happens tomorrow?

@WillHunting Secret stuff : )

user19161
@Matt OK, very secretive, like me!

: )

hhh
@GustavoBandeira The problem is that unless you control the Nordic peninsyla, you contral nothing. You can conquer Norway just by conquering the harbours. You can conquer Sweden also and Finland like that...
so blowing up the pipeline is a pretty short-sighted thing, it is actually very easy to do...

@hhh I was not aware of the "military-level" pressurization in EU.
I have never seen them come up in any political discussion. And I read about Finland since it is ranked quiet low in corruption index (i.e. it has very less corruption.)

10:01 PM
@hhh Let's go together - we unite the nordic countries and Brazil.

@WillHunting I will have to stop flying. It really annoys me. So much that I might punch someone at some point.

hhh
German US chancellor Merkel speaks rubbish that they have no "spy -line" in the pipeline but they have spy-line and they have now even atomic-missiled submaries in the international water.

Finland and Estonia could have blocked the pipeline but they did not co-operate...Finnish ministers such as Lipponen were apparently bribed to encourage the pipeline, similarly the German old Chancellor, getting over 1.5M EUR a year as compensation...

user19161
@Matt Flying?

@Matt You fly? planes?

Yes?
No reason to sound surprised. : )

user19161
10:03 PM
You are pilot!

user19161
OMG!

user19161
Can I have your autograph?

@hhh Spyline?
@Matt Cool.

@WillHunting lol no!
I am a passenger. And a very annoyed one at that.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik In a way it is a conspiracy but German magazine Stern reported it, they added it to the pipeline for some reason.

10:05 PM
@hhh What does Spyline mean?

hhh
I don't know what it does but the pipeline is heavily defenced

user19161
@Matt Ah, then no planes how are you going to get from A to B? I guess maybe there is no need to or there is the Euro Express!

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik The pipeline has also something to spy the countries nearby

@Matt Ohh. I do not like planes similarly. I prefer trains.
@hhh And what would be the purpose of spying?

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Tell me :)

10:06 PM
@WillHunting Yes, trains. Though for overseas I'm not quite sure yet.
@JayeshBadwaik They say mobile phones must be switched off. What a shite: of course they don't. And I've tested it, too.
Then they think they can tell you when you're allowed to have the blinds down and when not? Lol. Next time I'll tell her to go suck it. Seriously. I'm paying for this crap so they better do whatever I ask them to. Not the other way around.

@Matt That is a very archaic rule. In olden days, when the filters were not good enough to separate the signals from mobiles and signals from plane, you did have that problem. Now of course, the problem is gone but you know how the archaic rules work. :P

@JayeshBadwaik They work like this: I don't give a sh*t. : )

@Matt Completely agree.

user19161
@Matt Hmm, maybe if I go to Europe one day I will see you. :-)

@JayeshBadwaik Airline people and whatnots think they can do to you whatever the fuck they like. The worst: security. Why would I want security? I don't. Because it doesn't add anything apart from major nuisance. And the worst is: some asshole is making money out of wasting my time.

user19161
10:10 PM
@Matt You can just say shit.

@WillHunting Don't necessarily want to offend people. There might be Americans in this chat room. So better not use too much non-Christian and non-kosher vocabulary.

hhh
There is a now historical problem now in the Nordic history. Norway was molested in WW2 and German did very bad things to them. In contrast, Finland was an ally with Germany because it had to do so due to much larger enemy. Because Nordic countries over years have acted pretty much without leader, they were easy to conquer (ofc Finland/Sweden is an expection). Weak countries with democrasies may be easy to conquer with Blitzkrieg but during peace-time, they work pretty well :)

The problem is that they tend to get abused like the pipeline proves, the propaganda in Netherlands calls it Lasse

</rant>

user19161
@Matt I think it is not about nationality, just different people.

@WillHunting Culture is somewhat related to nationality, don't you think?

10:13 PM
@Matt Bleh

@Matt People will grab at every oppurtunity of power they can exercise over other people. It makes them feel powerful. :P :P (Apart from that, about security thought, I would beg to disagree having been at the end of various terrorist attacks due to lack of security.) But my point is, what they call security and what is actually security can be quiet different. And their cosmetic version sometimes can cause more harm.

user19161
@Matt I come here to rant too. I shit every day into the toilet bowl. :-) HAHAHA

hhh
But yeah, countries matter pretty much nothing, there was no germany before the WW1 for instance, maps are redrawn quite often.

user19161
@Matt Yes, for most people. But I am not influenced by the stupid things around me.

@JayeshBadwaik Next time they tell me to throw away liquid I might just pour it into their face. I might not, since the idiot requesting me to pour it away is nothing but a brainless puppet.
@WillHunting Yes you are. Whether you want it or not. (unfortunately)

user19161
10:16 PM
@Matt I mean, I don't follow others blindly.

Of course not.

user19161
I am quite different from most people around me I would think.

user19161
In fact, sometimes I feel I am not human.
2

hhh
@WillHunting Same here, I think I am the only brave and stupid enough to speak openly.
(people are pretty afraid to speak here for some odd reason, I still think openness is the best defence. There is nothing to hide here about our problems -- I feel it is the first step to solve them)

@WillHunting I'd think they aren't human.

user19161
10:19 PM
@hhh There is too much stupidity and evil in this world like I always say. Man cares about trivial things but not about nontrivial things. They hurt others and act as if others hurt them instead.

hhh
And now I have problem with my physics -homework, sorry :P

...have to do them...

@hhh Ironically Swedeish is very the pirate partiet was first formed.

@WillHunting Sure. If I'm still in Europe : D
Can't live in one place for too long. It becomes too annoying.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Why they don't call it Viking partiet :P

@hhh Now you are taking too far. Pirate is a good enough adjective. Names should be short and easy to remember. Viking is too used to be used as a political party name.

hhh
10:20 PM
The irony of Nordic countries is that we have never been rich countries, we have never had rich elite. We have just co-operated together :)
@JayeshBadwaik Viking and pirate are pretty much synonyms, do they?

@hhh Some few moments ago you said you did not co-operate together and hence were weak. Apart from that, you probably do not realize how rich you are. You have one of the highest per capita energy consumption in the world. (Norway is highest). More than 90% of all your power is hydroelectric which means it is renewable and hence, low cost.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik You misunderstood me, we have no rich elite.

@hhh Why is that bad? Rich elite are frequent to abuse.

Good night!

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik The fact that we have become rich countries is the irony of history, it is because we co-operate in Norden

10:23 PM
@Matt Good night.

user19161
@Matt Sleep tight! See you in your dreams!

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik The lack of rich elite here means eqalitarian society, we don't have any artificial caste -system. A rich person and a poor person can look the same.

@hhh And what is the problem with that?

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Nothing, I am quite proud of that :)

10:25 PM
@hhh In Brazil, poor people is VERY different of rich people

@hhh Yup, they are synonyms, but considering that pirate parties is fighting against the change of copyright which is advocated by US and since they call such opposers to copyrights as pirates, it was necessary to choose a word to reflect that sentiments.
@GustavoBandeira Same here, or in almost any big enough country (more than 100 million in population) .

@hhh The rich people is similar to european people, the rest of the world is the poor people.

user19161
@GustavoBandeira WTF are you saying?

Kinda that feeling: "Yo, I'm rich, I got an euroface! Yay!"

Does anyone know how to make a pdf out of some selected pages of a pdf?

10:27 PM
6 mins ago, by hhh
The irony of Nordic countries is that we have never been rich countries, we have never had rich elite. We have just co-operated together :)

1 min ago, by Gustavo Bandeira
@hhh In Brazil, poor people is VERY different of rich people

user19161
@Gus, there are rich and poor people on every continent

@PeterTamaroff Use ghostscript.

@JayeshBadwaik What is that?

hhh
@GustavoBandeira Not really, China is leap-frogging over the Western world -- you are too past-blind if you think the rich are in Western world, we have a massive amount of debt so our potential to grow is limited and our people are old.

10:28 PM
There will be some "ghostscript" script for it on internet. Let me see if I can fish out something.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Search for PDF software online, there are tons of them!

@WillHunting I know, but you need to take into account the context of the firs premise.

@WillHunting I have Adobe!

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Don't confuse Pedro.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff But the free version does not allow that!

10:28 PM
@WillHunting Okay. @PeterTamaroff Adobe is a sucky software for pdf. :P

No...
http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/6176018#6176018

@JayeshBadwaik Nothing that needs programming and stuff....
@JayeshBadwaik Bleh

@PeterTamaroff Are the pages consecutive ?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik That is not really relevant.

If yes, simply use a bullzip pdf printer for windows. or the inbuilt pdf printer for linux.

10:29 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Yes. Just wanna break down Spivak's Calc into the chapters so it loads faster in my handset.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik which book would you suggest to learn the university level things about angular momentum etc?

@hhh In Brazil people that look like europeans are rich (mostly euro imigrants). Imigrants from other places in the world are poor.

user19161
@hhh I forgot what little physics I know, but I like Feynman lectures for all of undergrad physics.

@hhh Any good mechanics book. I learnt Mechanics from Kleppner Kolenkow and Goldstein, but I am not sure if they are the right fit for you.
Halliday Resnick might be good for you.
@WillHunting Feynman Lectures are not to be used a primary textbook, always on the side.

hhh
@GustavoBandeira I had a Brazilian friend and he said that "Brazil is not the country [to live]" -- and he moved to Italy, apparently he meant some oddities with Brazilian economy. Then he came here for some odd reason...

10:32 PM
@GustavoBandeira Are there any natives? I am not sure which regions is which but Incas etc?

@hhh Brazil is really not so cool to live.

@hhh Europe is rich.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik We could do much better :P

@JayeshBadwaik Yep, but they're insulated, slowly losing their territories.

hhh
Our freight-industry is very inefficient, we have monopolies like food-monopolies -- there is a lot of problems that should be solved but requires more than 4 years' political engagement

10:33 PM
Hello @ayman. Always see you in chat now and then.

@GustavoBandeira Ohh.
@hhh My point was rest of the world have bigger problems, so you are doing relatively better. Of course, there are monopolies.

@WillHunting Hello :). Yes I drop it every now and then to see if there are any interesting discussions. I usually do it when I'm answering questions on the site.

user19161
@AymanHourieh Oh OK, only a third of chat is about math though. :-)

@WillHunting Yeah, for a second I thought I was in the wrong room when I entered it minutes ago.

So you think Europe is rich???????

hhh
10:38 PM
I wish we had world-class universities if we really were rich :P

I cannot understand we don't have private universities here, odd.
Best universities in Nordic countries are the medicine universities which is probably because of the small size like Karelinska Institut in Sweden

@math101 Most of it is. I guess Eastern Europe is not that rich, but western and northern surely are.
@hhh There might be a good reason behind it. Consider all the cost of tution.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik It is highly inefficient industry!

@hhh Education was almost never been visibly efficient.
Education is not an industry where you can measure the output.

hhh
@JayeshBadwaik Good point, it is hard to notice unless you go out of your university and see low-educated people.

user19161
@hhh I just wanna add, highly educated people can be very stupid sometimes. I have met a number of them :-)

hhh
10:42 PM
@WillHunting Correct :)
@WillHunting I am a stupid for sure :P

@WillHunting Everyone can be stupid in their quirky own way. Newton's Cat

user19161
I just have to listen to the news to see what stupid things people are saying :-)

hhh
@WillHunting I must go sleeping now, bye!
@JayeshBadwaik Thank you for the book suggestion!

user19161
@hhh Bye!

@hhh Welcome.
Bye.
@WillHunting It looks like we both are going to be up all night. Is it day break there already?

user19161
10:46 PM
@JayeshBadwaik It is almost 7 am.

@WillHunting Okay, are you going to sleep anytime soon?

user19161
@pedro Have you found the software you need? I don't use Windows anymore though, but I remember there were tons of those.

Or planning to ride it out?

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik I am going to eat now.

@WillHunting My stomach is rumbling too. I should grab something too.

user19161
10:48 PM
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, let's grab some balls!

@WillHunting Meatballs.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Hehe, or ...

@WillHunting or rumballs.
:P

People of the maths.
I need to prove a function is not differentiable.

@PeterTamaroff Fire away!

user19161
10:51 PM
Where is the function?

user19161
Is it the empty function?

@JayeshBadwaik The function is $$f(x)=\begin{cases} 0 \text{ ; when } x \text{ is irrational} \\\frac 1 q \text{ ; for } x=\frac p q \text{ irreducible fraction}\end{cases}$$
Now.

Ahh the empress function.

I have proved that for every $a\in (0,1)$ the functions tends to $0$.
Thus, this function is only continuous at the irrationals.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff At which point?

10:53 PM
So, it suffices to prove the claim for the irrationals, for since it is not continuous at the rationals, it is not differentiable there either.-
@WillHunting Nowhere!
Now, Spivak gives the following hints.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Ah see, you need to be precise Pedro! Precise!

Say $a$ is irrational.
Then consider the expression
$$\frac{{f\left( {a + h} \right) - f\left( a \right)}}{h}$$
for $h$ rational.

You know I was going to say, it better not be the empress function.
It is not even continuous.

If $a=n,a_1a_2a_3\dots$, for $h=-0,0\dots0a_{n+1}a_{n+2}\dots$

user19161
I am outta here. Happy solving!

10:54 PM
@JayeshBadwaik It is continuous at the irrationals.

@WillHunting Bye

If $h$ is rational, then $$\frac{{f\left( {a + h} \right) - f\left( a \right)}}{h} = 0$$

@JayeshBadwaik can you take a look at my question

In the second case, say $a+h=m/u$, then I get that $$\frac{{f\left( {a + h} \right) - f\left( a \right)}}{h} = \frac{{\frac{1}{u} - 0}}{{\frac{m}{u}}} = \frac{1}{m}$$

Q: Constructing a sequence

math101Construct a sequence of interpolating values $Y_n \text{ to }f(1 + \sqrt{10})$, where $f(x) = (1 + x^2)^{-1}$ for $-5 \leq x \leq 5$, as follows: For each n = 1,2, ... ,10, let $h = \frac{10} {n}$ and $Y_n = P_n(1 + \sqrt{10})$, where $P_n(x)$ is the interpolating polynomial for f(x) at the node...

10:56 PM
@math101 Dude, be polite. You're interrupting.

@PeterTamaroff lol sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

@math101 =D

@math101 I will take a look, just a min. Also, whenever there is a conversation going on, you might be better off using the [text](link) format.

okkk i get it
Thanks

@PeterTamaroff If a function is not continuous, how can it be differentiable?

10:58 PM
@JayeshBadwaik It is continuous at the irrationals, I just told you.
So we have to prove it is not differentiable there.
Obviously it is not differentiable at the rationals, for it is not continuous there.
