11:00 PM
Yeah!

FAE
Heya Bridge

You need to get up pretty early in the morning to beat @Sterno to the typo jokes.
Because he's old you see, and old people get up early
Oh hey, it's @FAE

FAE
Guys, the Gaming in Color documentary released on Steam, which is a documentary about the queer gaming community and culture and events and stuff, and some jerks have caused it to end up with tags like "psychological horror" "dystopia" "post-apocalyptic" "beat'em up" (that's...horrifying), and others. :/ Can you help out and report the inappropriate tags?

@FAE Definitely. I saw it pop up in my queue and was really confused.

user15026
@FAE How do I do that>

FAE
11:04 PM
@AshleyNunn Click the little + next to the tags and it'll pop up the current popular tags
On the inappropriate tags, if you hover, you'll see a little flag symbol on the right hand side you can click

@fae that's so fuct
Also crippled by mobile :(

Steam tags have pretty much been a trainwreck since day 1 so I'm not surprised people are using them for rude shit instead of just relatively harmless jokes

user15026
@FAE There, done :)

boom

(Tagging a game as "walking simulator" is funny to me. Tagging Gaming in Color, even if done as a "joke", with this stuff is fuct)

11:06 PM
@FAE Done. Also, if it helps, no one tags steam tags seriously anyways.
Because of, well, tags like that.

Valve sure doesn't

FAE
@AshleyNunn Woo, hopefully this helps.

user15026
@Wipqozn While that may be, this is still horrifying as fuck as social commentary

@AshleyNunn If I had to guess it would probably be people mad that a really awful game got pulled from greenlight a few weeks back

FAE
@Wipqozn Seeing "Beat'em Up" on there is absolutely horrifying.

11:08 PM
I always report shitty steam tags but it never seems to make a difference
That's fuct.

Maybe not enough people know about the flagging feature

@murgatroid99 I certainly didn't. I thought Valve policed them and that was it

I wish certain users could just be given like special permissions to clean tags.
Tag mods, etc.

The flag is pretty much invisible unless you mouse over it

FAE
@GnomeSlice Yeah :/

11:09 PM
@twobugs I'm pretty sure Valve doesn't do anything with them

wtf @ walking simulator

@GnomeSlice is "Female Protagonist" actually wrong?

@murgatroid99 It's a documentary, so yes.

@murgatroid99 I assumed it was meant to be "deerr gay men are woman deerrr look at me I'm a bigot so proud"

Although I guess the people who care about that sort of thing might be interested if they found it while searching the tag

11:10 PM
walking simulator's not even offensive,

@Wipqozn Well initially people started tagging games with all kinds of things. Valve responded by making things stricter but they seem to have just completely given up

@Aequitas That's a popular joke tag people put on stuff they think is dumb

@GnomeSlice Yeah, basically.

I'm fine with tagging stuff like generic corridor game 198746178362 with walking simulator

11:11 PM
are there any like actual walking simulators? maybe like has some RPG elements to it? you can like level up your legs to go faster and idk?

@twobugs I flag that tag everywhere I see it.
@Aequitas QWOP. That's about it.

@Wipqozn awesome pic

That tag is silly and nonhelpful in every case.

I'm not at all surprised to see that, given the recent ruling in the states. Whenever progress is made for an oppressed group the bigots always come out in full force.

I almost want to be Canadian now

11:12 PM
@GnomeSlice Fair enough. I just don't care about tags at this point unless they're blatantly offensive (like these are)
I mean, you can say "just jokes" or whatever, but that doesn't protect you from criticism. If you're mocking a group that historically has been persecuted and is still persecuted today, it's probably not a funny joke to begin with!

There are tasteful ways to make that sort of thing funny.

@twobugs Hatred is never a joke

This is funny, and I don't consider it hateful or homophobic.
Then there are the really terrible ways people make jokes about stuff like that
and some of that shit is horrible

@twobugs I feel like this line of thought isn't going to lead anywhere well in this room, so you should just drop it all together.

There are plenty of people who just say hateful shit and then call it a joke later, as if you can't say "okay, well that was a stupid joke"
@Wipqozn You're probably right, I'm just being stupid.
It just bothers me but I'm articulating it very poorly.

11:16 PM
NSFW language warning I guess I should mention for that video
Really strong language.

Geocaching

Proposed Q&A site for everyone who participates in geocaching, both beginners and experts.

Currently in definition.

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment Fun topic, probably not enough to it for a full SE site

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment I think this has been prorposed before

FAE
@Wipqozn Yeah, I think so too

In fact given it's a low rep user it definitly has

FAE
11:20 PM
I think the consensus was to lump it into the Outdoor Rec SE?

Low rep users who propose to area 51 never bother looking for proposals

FAE
that's where I've seen stuff about geocaching at least

> some crisp, minty chap
hahaha

What's geocoaching?
/wiki geocoaching

No chat commands bud.

user15026
11:24 PM
@Aequitas hunting for tupperware in the woods!

Geocaching is you go out and bury something in the woods and then post the GPS coordinates online for somebody to find

@Aequitas It's basically scavenger hunts with fancy technology

I knew a guy who proposed to his wife that way

user15026
(aka using GPS coordinates to find containers with logs/treatures)

user15026
@GnomeSlice Nope, no burying

11:25 PM
he put a ring out in the woods and took her out geocaching which apparently they did a lot and then proposed
pretty cool

user15026
That's neat

user15026
I really love doing it, its a fun way to explore places

I've never done it before
ONE DAAAAAAAAAAAY

user15026
I go a lot with my parents

Juan is like the third mod we've lost in the past little while.
I wonder if that means we'll have to go through another election.
Barf.
Everybody always gets so... idk.

11:28 PM
@GnomeSlice No. All the mods who stepped down weren't very active.

There's no like threshold for how many we have?

@GnomeSlice We just need enough mods to handle the daily moderation tasks

user15026
Well, they like to have no fewer than 3 for most sites

user15026
but beyond that, it's on an as needed basis

user15026
And honestly, each person who stepped down had been inactive for a good while before they did

11:29 PM
@AshleyNunn Yeah, and iirc they normally will only hold an election if the current mods say they need more mods.

user15026
so we're pretty solidly handling things

user15026
Yeah, like if the current team is obviously handling stuff and doesn't feel so overloaded that they're gonna explode, it's left as is

Haha, awesome
Even the mask

@GnomeSlice dafuq, wouldn't that be insanely easy considering the accuracy of GPS?

@Aequitas Not if you hide it like in a knot in a tree.
Or something.
Ask @AshleyNunn, I've never done it
Or like you leave a clue at the first waypoint

FAE
11:32 PM
@Aequitas GPS is only accurate to within 30ft or so, less even, depending on interference

user15026
@GnomeSlice Not all of them have clues or waypoints

FAE
so you've still got to search

user15026
@FAE Also, people get HELLA creative with containers

FAE
Some are also really tiny!

user15026
I've seen ones that look like all kinds of stuff

FAE
11:33 PM
Nano caches are like a centimeter long
There's caches that look like rusty bolts

user15026
Bolts, electrical boxes, etc

FAE
or fake rocks

user15026
@FAE Those nano sized bison containers are the bane of my existence.

user15026
@Aequitas This is going to vary depending on weather, etc

FAE
11:33 PM
@AshleyNunn there's so many nanos here because it's so urban, they sometimes drive me nuts

user15026
and if there are a lot of trees and things

user15026
@FAE That's why we usually go out in the counrtry and stuff

@GnomeSlice that video was hilarious

@AshleyNunn i'm assuming you're not going to go out in the woods when its raining

> tight like a lozenge

11:34 PM
@GodEmperorDune Steve Hughes is great.

user15026
My dad usually tries to find me and my mom ones with treasure potential

FAE
@Aequitas I've cached while it's raining before

user15026
@Aequitas cloudy days, and I've totally cached in the rain too

FAE
sometimes you can't really predict stuff

user15026
I've cached in all sorts of weather in all sorts of places

11:34 PM
woah waht everyones done this before
how do I try it?

user15026
@Aequitas Me and @FAE both go pretty often

user15026
@Aequitas Got a smartphone?

I've blamed caching in all sorts of weather

FAE
@AshleyNunn Speaking of which, the summer Road Trip stuff has started, we've got to get out and start that still.

nope i've 80 years old ;)

11:35 PM
@TimStone I see what you did there

user15026
@FAE Man, I saw that. I need to get on some of that. One of these weekends I gotta poke my parents about going out, or see if local friends want to hit up some stuff. (not sure I have local cache finding firends, but I will try.)

user15026

user15026
(oh god they changed the site, help)

FAE
@AshleyNunn Also also, @Ashley, do you do Munzees at all? We started doing Munzees as well because it's a little less prep work than caching and it's something we can check out real quick if we're in a new place that we didn't expect to be or something.

@AshleyNunn that pic, I thought it was a mod for tomb raider

FAE
11:36 PM
@AshleyNunn Yeah, they've been upgrading it and stuff.

user15026
@FAE I used to more when I was on campus

@AshleyNunn will I be requiring of the ones they call "friends" to do this?

FAE
@AshleyNunn May I friend thee? :D

user15026
I might have crawled under a bench people were sitting on once to get one.

user15026
Sure, let me check what my name is. Assuming the same as most places.

user15026
11:37 PM
@Aequitas Nah, I go by myself sometimes

@Aequitas if you don't want to end up alone in the woods...

FAE
I assumed so too

user15026
It's fun with friends because more eyes and stuff to look

user15026
@FAE If you find me under that one, go for it :)

user15026
I don't know if I logged many finds, I was bad at it

user15026
11:38 PM
(I like finding but I am horrible at logging)

How dangerous is it?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Caching? As dangerous as you want it to be, I guess? Like the intent isn't to put you in danger and all caches have a difficulty warning and a terrain warning

user15026
We've had to climb some trees and hills and rocky outcroppings, but nothing like you'd need special equipment for

user15026
it's meant to be accessible to just about any able-bodied human

FAE
@AshleyNunn Success!

user15026
11:40 PM
And if there's anything unusual, a good hider will tell you what to watch for.

user15026
The most I've ever run into myself is some bumps and scrapes and bug bites.

user15026
And thorn bushes.

user15026
(But like if you're looking at urban caches, they're not going to be bad at all)

user15026
@FAE wicked

user15026
I know we have more caches locally than Munzees last I checked

user15026
11:41 PM
which always struck me as odd because munzees are easier to place

I once had to fight a grizzly bear when geocaching, with my bare hands. I managed to take it down, but it was a tough fight.

user15026
This does remind me, I gotta pay for my premium membership again

FAE
@AshleyNunn There's like this one huge trail in Delft that's like every other lamppost, lol

user15026
@FAE Niiiice

FAE
Also when we went to Amsterdam, I was at the Central Station and didn't even have time to get all the Virtuals

user15026
11:42 PM
Oh, the terrain 5/difficulty 5 challenge is going to be fun :D

Oh snapo
There's a bunch of these in halifax
I remember looking at some free site once and it was shit

user15026
@Wipqozn Use geocaching.com

I should do this with some friends sometime
@AshleyNunn I am
using the one you linked
I have no idea what I used before
The one I used before had about 5 places in nova scotia, all of them at least an hour away from me

FAE
@Wipqozn It may have been the free site. They've been in the process of upgrading it over the past year.

user15026
@FAE I know there are some crappy knockoff sites too :(

11:45 PM
There's one within walking distance of me

user15026
Niiiice

well maybe
was hidden in 2014
It's probably gone now

user15026
@Wipqozn Probably not

user15026
Check the last log date

Is there some way to see if it's still there?

user15026
11:45 PM
Link me to the cache listing?

user15026
It should list logs of peopel who found it and the dates

FAE
@AshleyNunn ah, that sucks :(

user15026
and if too many people haven't found it, a good hider would do maintenance

user15026
Like there are caches I've gotten that have been there for years

user15026
if you do them well and take care of them, they stick around :)

11:46 PM
oh, last one was a few days ago

user15026
Yeah, you'd be good to go then :)

@AshleyNunn I just assumed some random person would come by and trash it after a weej
I have very little faith in people

user15026
@Wipqozn Not if you do a decent hide

user15026
seriously, once you start doing it you will start scoping out places being like "I'd so hide one here"

let's download this app

user15026
11:47 PM
My parents and I want to do a series around their little town

I could totally hide one somewhere at my work

user15026
@Wipqozn Has to be publicly accessible, etc

user15026
the rules are on the site

user15026
:)

@AshleyNunn It is

user15026
11:48 PM
(There's one at my local library. I need to get it at some point.)

The building isn't, but the parking lot is

user15026
@Wipqozn Awesome. Light standards are a common parking lot hide, they usually have a part you can lift up :D

user15026
(Sorry, I like this hobby a lot)

FAE
There are also achievements!

user15026
This is one of my dream caches I want to get: geocaching.com/geocache/GCGV0P_original-stash-tribute-plaque

user15026
11:50 PM
@FAE I remember helping my parents last summer, they did the whole summer daily thing

user15026
(Which got hard after a while, they kept having to go farther and farther :P)

FAE
You get to show them off in your profile, they're called Souvenirs. You get them from doing certain events or stuff like finding caches in different states/souvenirs/countries
@AshleyNunn oh wow nice

@AshleyNunn Cool

user15026
@FAE They found their thousandth cache recently.

FAE
@AshleyNunn Awesome! Congratulations to them! :D
I'm such a long way off from that, lol

user15026
11:52 PM
It was nice, we mentioned that in the log and the hider sent them a nice note about how he was honoured to be their 1000th

user15026
@FAE I am mad I've not logged a lot of mine

user15026
so it looks like I've not found a lot :P

user15026
And I keep forgetting to log where I take my bumblebee trackable (I totally keep it on my caching lanyard)

Do I need to take a picture, or is it just the honour system?

user15026
(along with my pen, a flashlight, a small knife, etc)

user15026
11:53 PM
@Wipqozn Nah, you don't have to prove it or anything, just log it if you find it

@AshleyNunn Okay, I figured
Lying would defeat the point, but there are always asshats that just like to make themselves look impressive

@AshleyNunn bumblebee trackable?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Okay, so, a few bits of important info.

@Wipqozn I just found every geocache ever invented, in the last 10 minutes

FAE
@AshleyNunn Yay, bumblebee :D

11:55 PM
oh so I'd need something to write with

FAE
@AshleyNunn I try to do it on my smartphone when I'm at the cache so I don't forget, but I'm also pretty much always somewhere that has mobile coverage. I always leave more than just "TFTC" though.

user15026
A trackable/TB/Tracker Bug is a physical item (often a keychain sized thing but I've seen like stuffed animals and stuff) that you attach a code to so you can track where it goes. The idea is you see it in a cache, you take it (logging that you have it) and then drop it off somewhere else (logging that you dropped it). Some people set up "rules" like we had one last summer that wanted to be taken to caches near fire stations.

user15026
My parents placed one that I took to NYC and started off in Central Park that was a cat asking people who found it to post pet pictures with it.

I might try this out tomorrowI
I considered doing it tonight, but if by some chance it takes me a while I don't want to be out all night

user15026
@FAE was awesome and got me a bumblebee that matches my tattoo pretty well, and I just "dip" it in caches (you can say a trackable "visited" a cache but wasn't dropped)

11:57 PM
it's alrteady 9pm!

FAE
@Wipqozn Yeah. We keep a backup full of geocaching prep stuff, like a small notebook for taking notes about hints, a flashlight, rubber gloves, one of those pens that can write even on wet paper, etc.

Almost my bedtime
Well I should try this out. I can likely get a couple of my friends to do it.

user15026
@Wipqozn Do it :D

In fact I know 3 of my primary group wil

FAE
But yeah, @Wipqozn, it's pretty fun. Just make sure you read through the rules and stuff so you know what to do and not do. :)

11:57 PM
The fourth might do it, but only to hang out, but will probably be bored

user15026
@FAE Yeah, there are so many little bits that are good to have.

Man, have you ever had that friend that literally never wants to do anything fun?
and is just always bored?

user15026
I don't have very many local friends tbh

@FAE Sure, but I'm assuming it's pretty obvious. Don't take it, log it, don't break anything. Aka don't be ana ss.
If you take something from the geocache (or "cache"), leave something of equal or greater value.
Write about your find in the cache logbook.
Log your experience at www.geocaching.com.
CLOSE ENOUGH

user15026
Aww, damn, my parents marked the cat trackable as missing. It was last seen in France.

11:59 PM
I declare victory

user15026
@Wipqozn I love tradeables.

FAE
@AshleyNunn aw :(
