Heya, Bridge

Hi @FAE

Q: Why i can't do the "Fisherman's Rage" quest in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Sings?

Ana Maria MoldoveanuI complete all 50 quests, but when i go to the old mansian, where the fisherman is and talk with it , it doesn' t appear the "Quest accepted" and when i go into the quest menu it say only 50 quests completed and in the "accepted quests" is 00 Please help me!

2:24 PM
looks pretty nice

FAE
@BenBrocka CC @OrigamiRobot

@FAE is the worst.

My bigger issue with health care is that you never know what something is going to cost until after they do it.

@FAE SHUT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP

2:31 PM
@OrigamiRobot I take it there's something about the picture which bothers you, thus further proving that @FAE is the worst?

@Wipqozn Indeed

@OrigamiRobot So what is it that bothers you?

@Wipqozn The fact that I want it.
I don't want to want it.

Oh okay
I thought maybe it was the shape or something and it really bothered you
like how sloths bother you
In anycase, this just proves @FAE gains power from the misery of others. Look how often she removes me from room ownership!

Bill Murray will attend Bill Murray Day at the Toronto Film Festival, where Bill Murray's newest film will premiere.

FAE
2:35 PM
@Wipqozn Schadenfreude is my superpower.

I keep almost buying a PS4 until I realize there are still no games exclusive to it that I want.

@Sterno Destiny is what I want.

@Sterno I'm waiting for bloodborne to come out.

But do I $500 want it?

@OrigamiRobot Is it your destiny to own it?

Man, I'm so clever.

FAE
:3

Destiny isn't exclusive

@FAE YOU. ARE. THE. WORSTEST!

FAE
@OrigamiRobot <3

2:38 PM
@Rapitor It is to consoles of which I have none.

@OrigamiRobot multiplayer console FPS. ugh.

@Sterno Yeah, FPS on a console turns me off right away.

@Wipqozn That was so bad you must once again be granted room ownership so that you can be punished by having it removed.

@Sterno I give minimal shits about mouse/keyboard vs controller

2:39 PM
I don't really get all the hate on console FPS. I play both PC and Console and its different sure, but not unplayable

@Rapitor it does exclude computers :P

PlayStation 4 Dual Shock 4 controller $39.99 at eBay http://ow.ly/AC4i6

@Sterno I'm just glad my jokes make such an impact on your lives.

it's just whatever you are used to

On a controller, have less control over the speed. With a mouse, I have to pick up the mouse to continue turning. Lose-lose.

FAE
2:40 PM
@OrigamiRobot Turn up your DPI, man.

@OrigamiRobot the PS+ sub includes some free games, and there's some other good exclusives already/coming, like resogun, bloodborne, uncharted, The Last of Us since I assume you didn't have a PS3

@FAE Then i can't aim precisely.

@FAE High DPI is best DPI.
@OrigamiRobot Get a mouse that let's you quickly swap between two DPI settings.

@Wipqozn No, this is training. Like when you swat a puppy's nose with a rolled up newspaper because he is eating your shoes.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot G600 has the extra key exactly for this

2:41 PM
Get a big mouse mat, and as high DPI as you can stand. and yeah, DPI toggles are great, though I never bother changing it honestly

@FAE Which is exactly what I don't want to have to use!

FAE
@OrigamiRobot I have a higher DPI for normal stuff, then I hold it down for sniping, for example, in Borderlands 2, which switches it to the lower DPI.

except when games have massive variations in cursor speed like BF3, cool game

I only use the DPI toggles on this mouse when arting

FAE
When I release, it snaps back to the higher DPI.

2:41 PM
@Rapitor I agree it's not unplayable, but for me it's definitely clunkier and less fun. But there are so many PC FPS games I could play that I never see the reason to play the console ones.

I don't ever want higher DPI in an FPS

med sensitivity on console, med-low on PC is my happy place

@Rapitor Console FPSes tend to deal with the shitty aiming by essentially equipping you with a rapid-fire aim-assisted railguns

@Rapitor Low everywhere.

@Sterno Yeah, I agree. I used play consoles on an FPS when I didn't have a working gaming desktop, but as soon as I got anew one I never played console ones again. I ust find a mouse and keyboard so much better.

2:43 PM
I find having to use a keyboard to be a minus.

the only thing that I can not stand is racing on keyboard setup. anything else I'll play with an atari joystick for all I care.
@OrigamiRobot more buttons to do things

I just don't bother playing FPSs.

@Rapitor More buttons require more fingers and/or hand movement.

Turn based strategy is what the cool kids play. Right?

@OrigamiRobot feets and faceroll

2:45 PM
I can't do keyboard platformers, at least if there's anything of even moderate precision. Also fighting/beat 'em ups and shmups

@Rapitor It's not like I can feel the analogue acceleration anyway on a controller

@JasonBerkan TBS is pretty awesome. I prefer it over FPS, most of the time.
I do usually prefer FPS over TBS for multiplayer though.

@badp You're playing the wrong games then, or Mario Kart, which doesn't have analog acceleration

Bleh
Had blood drawn again
It wasn't as bad this time, though
They didn't need as much, I was lying down, and my girlfriend was with me

@BenBrocka Burnout Paradise

2:47 PM
@Wipqozn That is true. TBS multiplayer often involves too long a commitment to easily organize.

Usually in racing games you just pick a direction and go there really fast. :P

FAE
@JasonBerkan Honestly, I'm not really good at them, but I do enjoy them to some extent, even though I'm bad, haha.

@Frank This needs to be the loading icon everywhere
@badp That was such a fun game

FAE
@BenBrocka I am horrible at keyboard platformers. Though I've met some people who say they prefer keyboard over controller.

@badp Hardly a racing sim, and IIRc cornering was never a big issue. Hell you could hold boost through most races

2:48 PM
@badp arcade racers sure, not sims though
games like Forza brakes are a requirement

@Wipqozn So long as the turns are played at a speed of one second per second and everybody plays their turns at the same time and by "strategy" you mean "do not run facefirst into a heavy"

@FAE I've heard this on occasion, I'm pretty sure these are just people who absolutely refuse to use controllers, not people who actually tried both for a reasonable time and found keyboard better

DK 1 and 2 are for 60% off at GOG (means: $2.39) if anyone of you so happened to not own a copy yet.

@MartinSojka DK?

@FAE i think keyboard is slighty better because sticks don't always go the 4 directions platformers use, and twitches could cause death

FAE
2:50 PM
@BenBrocka Yeah, I dunno. One of the games I just got from a humble bundle, part of their 24 hour rhythm bundle, is a platformer, rogue-like thing, but no controller support and the dev said he prefers keyboard, so he'd never thought about putting it in and says just use joy2key.

Donkey Kong is the only game I can think of that expands from DK.

@Wipqozn Same here

Also this week-end for cheap: SMAC, all kinds of Ultimas and Wing Commanders, .... basically "EA Classics"
@Wipqozn Dungeon Keeper.

ah okay

2:51 PM
Racing games I've played are NFS: Most Wanted (200X), Burnout ParadiseNFS: Undercover, NFS: Carbon, NFS: Hot Pursuit, NFS: World, from best to worse, where Burnout Paradise is okay and Hot Pursuit is a flaming pile of garbage.

This is how I feel the analog stick is layed out.

@FAE ugh devs liek that

@badp there's your problem. too much NFS

@OrigamiRobot is that from a Dead Space PC port dev?

@Rapitor Most Wanted (200X) was awesome.

2:52 PM
I never played dead space anywhere

I wanted more like that, and never really found it.

@badp yeah. Underground 2 is probably still the absolute though, MAYBE Carbon. after that it was all downhill mostly. Save for most wanted

Since Most Wanted 201X is made by the same guys who made Hot Pursuit, I'm steering really clear from it.

First game is great on console, but the PC version has hilariously excessive deadzones, and since the mouse just emulates the joystick, it completely destroys any and all control schemes
It's weird because the console version has no added deadzones

@OrigamiRobot Jump Scares the game.

2:53 PM
@StrixVaria I know, I watched someone play it.

Although I was bitter because the controls on PC are so bad they must have programmed and shipped without testing.

FAE
@BenBrocka This game, Probability 0.

@Rapitor I didn't like Carbon. The canyon races were a gimimick and passing the last boss on a canyon and winning the game with the 10 seconds rule felt thoroughly underwhelming. Also, the heat-by-region system meant epic pursuits were basically impossible.

I just don't know anything about the controls

@Rapitor I enjoyed Carbon
The absolute best arcade type racing game is Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition

2:54 PM
@SaintWacko burnout revenge

FAE
@BenBrocka Friend of mine's getting ready for his Grounded run in TLoU, I remember you saying that the encounters didn't feel like they were really made for it. What exactly do you mean, like balance-wise or what?

@Rapitor Okay, that was a lot of fun, too, but mostly just for crash mode

Finally: fuck drifting.

@FAE It's basically just the normal game except most things are one hit kill and you never know how much health you have

@badp My friend always got exasperated because instead of slowing to go around a corner, I would just drift around it

2:56 PM
@badp drifting was fun in early NFS games. extremely satisfying to just drift the entire circuit

If you play stealth most of the game isn't too awful, but random shit is just completely insane like the sniper section, which is totally awful. Only way to play it is to bum-rush through a section the sniper can't see but there are 20 other guys that spawn-in

@StrixVaria I did find the space parts to be scary in a non-jump scare way.

@Rapitor Wouldn't that destroy your tires pretty quickly though?

The fact that there was practically no sound was unsettling.

In Midnight Club 3, the cars all have awesome powers

2:57 PM
@MartinSojka drift tires are usually gone in 2-3 heats anyway irl

I can see how stunts like this in a game could be annoying for someone who prefers a more "grounded" racing experience.

@OrigamiRobot yeah Dead Space does silence in space right

FAE
@BenBrocka Yuck, really? You can't just make your way from spot to spot?

@FAE No, that's designed around you being able to take like...half a dozen sniper shots. It's not possible to hop from spot to spot the normal way without dying. Maybe it is if you have like 4 health kits
But I had low-ish health and no health kits, and it wasn't possible to not get shot that way
but it's not too bad if you know the route and have a smoke bomb to distract the set of guys that can get in your way
the part where ellie gets the rifle is also extremely annoying

FAE
Gotcha, thanks.

3:07 PM
It basically makes it a stealth survival horror game, which wouldn't be so bad, but certain parts get very frustrating, and some basically have to be ran from. Like the bloater in the basement--you really just have to run. Anything where running was recommended in the original it's near-required in grounded

Heh. Love that graphics design in Max Gentlemen.

also, funny enough, Clickers are about the least scary enemies. Humans are by far the worst

runners are only a problem if there's something else nearby, you can kite them around and punch them to death one by one, it's actually kinda fun
bloaters are just the standard bullet-sinks, kill everything else first

sigh We have a site that locks you out of your account if you make too many attempts.
Which is great security practice. No way to brute force it.
What's not so great is that if you get the password wrong, there's a big button on the screen that says, "Email my password"
Number of support requests this week for people's passwords: two.
You has button, people. Use it.
Also, the passwords are stored in clear text.

3:11 PM
Everyone knows passwords should be ROT13'd. Or maybe ROT14'd. Nobody would think of that.

@JasonBerkan I'd just be happy with a one-way salted hash.

Speaking of which, Phil Fish just allegedly got hacked.

@Rapitor Rewriting the websites is already on the list of things to do.

List of things to do:
- Everything

3:13 PM
@Ullallulloo His company's mail accounts (and via that, the web site) got, which is a shame. It hits more than just Fish.

@Unionhawk Pretty much.

A file is being distributed which contains his passwords, address, government documents, social security information, and bank information; Polytron financial information of sales and revenue; and his employees info.

@Ullallulloo apparently a bunch of skypes too? This whole thing is ridiculous

Please work please work please work please work please work please work
Whew, so far so good
DAMMIT

Incidentally, that's how I do to do lists. I get a feeling that I might be doing it wrong.

3:17 PM
As long as you add a hierarchy of what exactly "Everything" entails, you should be fine.

that's not good
...

@Unionhawk I just go, "You are number 356092389 on the list of things to do. Estimated time to investigate: 3 years. In the event this timeline is unsatisfactory, please escalate to the company owner."

Whats our stance on item build questions?
league in particular

@Brian As in equipment loadout?

yea
It seems that information would change too frequently and be opinion based

3:21 PM
It falls into subjective territory pretty quickly, even ignoring the fact that for LoL could change quickly

Apparently TravisCI will attempt to compile a push of just a tag to github.
I just tagged my initial commit because I wanted to (ab)use the Github releases system to put up downloads used by every version.
You mean my initial commit with no code and no .travis.yml file failed to build? I can't imagine why!

@Brian I don't play LoL, so I don't know where this lies on the objective-subjective/good-bad-subjective plane, but that type of "what is the best of these options" would usually be considered good-subjective, because it has a number of objective elements to it.

FAE
@Brian That's specific enough to fall into good subjective

What's a 'money order'?
I need to get one for my training

It's a bank note - you buy it from a bank (or Canada Post) and the person who receives it can turn it back into cash.

3:35 PM
I have to buy it?

@GnomeSlice It's basically a check that is guaranteed to clear because you pay for it up front.

There's a post office within walking distance of me, what do I need to bring to get it?
Oh what
That's cool

@GnomeSlice Money

@GnomeSlice Just money.

@badp Play Blur
@JasonBerkan Huh, okay.
$60 charge for the cpr class

3:38 PM
So you'll need $60 + whatever fee Canada Post charges.
Which looks to be $7.

That seems high.

I have to agree with @OrigamiRobot. Just this once, though.

That looks to be the going rate, even at Canadian banks. It's $7.50 at RBC.

Yea, my bank charges $1 if it's less than $500 and it's free after that.

Scotiabank is $7.50 for customers, $15 for non-customers. (Given that this is Canada, I wouldn't be surprised if the fee is set by the government.)

3:42 PM
Oh, and I just learned there is no fee for the coin sorters in the lobby.
That's neat.

That would be just like them - force the banks to charge $7.50, but allow Canada Post (a federal gov't organization) to undercut the banks.

> Fat Cat Coin Sorters aren’t just for our Fat Cat members! All members are welcome to use the sorters to deposit or cash loose change without the hassle of wrapping coins. You’ll get to keep all of your change because there is no usage fee like most commercial coin sorter machines charge. Fat Cat Coin Sorters are available at all branches, and feature English and Spanish language options.
That'd be more useful if I had more loose change.

Yay! Things are (somewhat) working now.

FAE
Going to do some more geocaching! :D

Just in time for lunch

3:45 PM
Do I need cash to buy a money order?
or can I use debit or something

@GnomeSlice You can usually use debit
If you get the money order at your bank, they'll usually debit it directly from your account.

if you go to your bank, they'll just take it right out of your account
DAMMIT @MBraedley

It does usually cost you a fee though, above and beyond the amount of your money order.

My bank doesn't exist
it's a virtual bank

@OrigamiRobot I'm just that fast
@GnomeSlice Then the post office

3:46 PM
They don't actually have any bank branches

How do you make a deposit?

online
or through a bank machine
not online, what am I saying

Where do you put your money?

you cash it through a bank machine

@GnomeSlice What if you get a cheque that you need to cash?

3:48 PM
@MBraedley bank machine
they have machines in grocery stores
the people that own the bank own most of the grocery stores in Canada

I can't deposit checks via my ATM :(

President's Choice
or something

So jealous

Yes. @OrigamiRobot there's no actual tellers, just ATMs

^
Except they aren't called ATMs, they're just Bank Machines
That might just be a Canada thing though

3:49 PM
ABMs then

Q: What's the reward for completing Nightmare Mode?

lunboksAt the end of the Nightmare Mode overworld, there's a big honking present. If you tap it, it says you have to complete Nightmare Mode in order to open it. All 36 invaded levels, in a row, without dying. I'm pretty sure that nobody has done or will ever be able do this, but on the off chance t...

Well, it took my interns three days to figure out an error, but in the end, they got it.

@OrigamiRobot Every bank owned (and branded) machine accepts deposits, AFAIK, at least in the case of those attached to a bank.
There may be some stand-alone machines that don't, for instance those located in pharmacies and corner stores.

@Frank It once took me about as long to debug a misspelled assert function name. And by once I mean a couple of weeks ago

@MBraedley Not mine, TMK

3:54 PM
I gotta go out and buy some money
5
be back later

@GnomeSlice This sentence is hilarious. I approve of your phrasing.

@murgatroid99 I'm making them figure things out on their own, for the most part.

OK, apparently you can, but I have no idea how.

I'm leading them down the right path, but they have to figure out the issue on their own.

@OrigamiRobot That's because they are cheques. I bet you can deposit cheques at your ATM. :P

3:55 PM
HAPPY BIRTHDAY @ASHLEYNUNN

@JasonBerkan In the US, we use most of our Us for patriotism. We can't just needlessly throw them into other words.

0
Q: What does "no direct connection available" mean?

AlvarIn Space Engineers it always says no direct connection available when playing peer-to-peer. This always happens when I connect to friends via the peer-to-peer function in the game (multiplayer) and it happens to my friends as well. I've searched as much as I can for a solution but can only find ...

@OrigamiRobot Hah! (Though that would be even funnier if patriotism had a U in it.)

@Frank That makes sense. I just wanted to point out that even the simplest problems can take a long time to debug. And I was debugging my own code.

@murgatroid99 Yeah, I've done that before, myself.

4:00 PM
Now I'm just mad that I've been wasting time going into banks.

Sometimes, you just need another set of eyes.

@Frank It was assertEqual spelled as assertEquals in an integration test. I think it would be hard for anyone to catch that.

@murgatroid99 It's the one-offs that throw me, too.
"But it's compiling! It can't be wrong!"

@Frank The worst part is that this was PHPUnit, so that caused a runtime exception. Due to a bug in the code I was integrating with, this caused a deadlock when it ran the destructors. So all I saw at first was mysteriously non-terminating execution

My mind briefly assumed "PHPUnit" was the worlds lamest rap group

4:13 PM
My facebook feed is full of nothing but ice bucket challenges.

@Sterno Does that increase the probability that you will donate to ALSA?

I don't get the "challenge". It's just ... cold water. Where's the "challenge" in that?

It was just invented to be stupid and viral and it worked
fortunately it's for a good cause unlike most stupid viral stuff

I love how leaving a game running overnight when I run off to deal with the kids pads my gaming stats on Steam.

user4704
@MartinSojka Maybe if you live somewhere freezing. I dunno. I feel like at this point it's become more about "who is getting water dumped on them" and less about the charity.

4:18 PM
@JasonBerkan I hate my idle time, if I had to guess I'd say like 25-50% of "gametime" recorded across all my games is me not even holding the controller/with the game window focused

user4704
I'm sure they've still raised a lot of money, which is great, but I've seen a lot videos not even mention the charity or what was going on or what.

@murgatroid99 Probably, but not significantly

@BenBrocka For the most part the number is irrelevant to me. The only time I paid any attention to it was HoMM6, where I had 50+ hours of gameplay and was not even finished the 2nd (of I think 7) campaign. I quit at that point.

4:23 PM
@OrigamiRobot this is also why we replace so many S's with Z's. We realized (see!) that we've gotta conserve those too.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Is that the entire text of Moby Dick?

@Murgatroid Yup!

Q: Why i can't do the "Fisherman's Rage" quest in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Sings?

Ana Maria MoldoveanuI completed all 50 quests, but when I go to the old mansion, where the fisherman is and talk with him, the "Quest accepted" doesn't appear. When I go into the quest menu it says only 50 quests completed and 00 "accepted quests".

I don't know how to retag that. Anyone know much about that game?

@Ktash Well, a quick Google search shows that it's actually called Guardian Signs, first of all

@murgatroid99 haha, yeah
but it's too long, and I don't see a tag

We don't have a consistent method for shortening games with subtitles, so we can just pick something that looks good
I actually once checked, and we have shortened names in just about every way you can think of to fit them on a tag

4:40 PM
I hate people.
2

I'd guess that uniquely identifies the game, so I'd vote for that

@badp People are the worst.

person: "if we go there by train we'll take 90 minutes and leave at 08:20"
me: "It's okay, I'll drive us there and we'll only take 60 minutes."
person: "oh good! then let's leave at 8 o'clock"

@Wipqozn I told you, man: people.

Back
I bought some money.
Also milk and a thermal shopping bag I can use when I buy groceries

@Sterno They missed the most important one: cursive lets you take incomprehensible notes quickly

@Sterno cursive letters are written different in different languages, would all those reasons still apply even?

> By having to learn cursive as well, it gives students another opportunity to fully comprehend the alphabet.
lolwat

4:43 PM
I ditched cursive in grade 4

@Chippies I'm American. Obviously I think whatever is good for America is good for the rest of the world and don't give it any other thought.

@Sterno sounds about right :)
well, if Americans think it's good for the world then it must be. Right?

No, it's not that we think it's good for the world. It's more accurate to say we think it's good for us and the rest of the world can suck it!

cursive is stupid, practically no one can write readable cursive

4:44 PM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the main point in using cursive is writing speed. In today's computer world, it probably ain't that important.

> Students with learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia, can have a very hard time with writing in print because many of the letters look similar, particularly b and d.
Yes, because cursive is so easily read.

@OrigamiRobot cursive is mostly just circles, so that's a really shitty argument

@OrigamiRobot And all of their coursework is clearly in cursive.
Oh, wait, that version of Moby Dick blog post about commerical whaling you have to read for English class isn't in cursive? I guess your argument sucks then.

The only thing I've ever used cursive for is my signature and that rapidly devolved into "fuck it, these squiggles are good enough"
3

user4704
@Chippies I am 32, and after years and years of practice I still cannot read my mother's handwriting well because it's almost exclusively cursive :(

user4704
4:46 PM
It causes a bit of awkwardness when she sends me cards, and then asks me about them later.

@OrigamiRobot And what's cool is that except in very rare cases, such as buying a house, those squiggles are good enough.

@JoshPetrie my mother has really nice handwriting, although she does mix cursive with a little bit of typed. In school however, there were maybe 3 out of 30 people whose cursive writing I could read...

user4704
I don't even remember how to write it well. I remember it was a "big deal" to start learning it in 2nd or 3rd grade.

@Sterno 90% of the signing I do could be random squiggles for all they care.

I can probably read cursive, but I certainly can't write it anymore
I don't think I've seen cursive in years though

4:48 PM
@OrigamiRobot Probably more

The only reason businesses and such require a signature is to cover their asses.
They don't care what you write.

About a year ago I started just drawing a straight line through the signature box with a little curve on the end, and no one has ever cared

@OrigamiRobot Mine is

user4704
That's all I do.

user4704
Especially on the ones where you have to sign with your finger, like all the Square terminals.

user4704
4:49 PM
Which are everywhere now.

I can't even forge my own signature

The transaction fee they pay is less if they require a signature. That is the entire reason.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Lol.

@LessPop_MoreFizz TL;DR
