FAE
4:00 PM
@BenBrocka There's a lot more multiplayer stuff in 3 I think, but I haven't done any of that.

@FAE That's a shame. Uncharted 2 managed to keep the narrative/flow of a movie without the...boring, non-interactive bits of a movie that MGS 4 sorely suffers
How's the gameplay itself?

FAE
@BenBrocka The flow is still decent, but the story itself I mean is not as good.

Also it's $17 so good is probably good enough. I think I bought U2 at full price and didn't regret it a bit

@Powerlord Wubi sadly. I really am not good with partitioning stuff.

FAE
@BenBrocka I think it's definitely worth $17.

4:01 PM
@FAE Do I still get to pull people off cliffs? Cause that was the best shit ever

@Retrosaur Wubi slows down HDD access tremendously

FAE
@BenBrocka Yes, yes you do.

Excellent

@Powerlord Yeah. It's also kind of interesting how many questions AskUbuntu.SE is getting. It's increased a lot after yesterday's update

FAE
@BenBrocka Gameplay was still solid and fun. Also, you get to throw grenades back now.

4:02 PM
@Retrosaur The existing directions are pretty bad, and it doesn't help that the steam64 package doesn't work if you haven't already added i386 support.
(via sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386)

@FAE Cool. Gonna pick it up then. Should probalby finish Dead Space 3 first

@Powerlord I have ieverything installed, but it's still a bitch to deal with. Can't even get TF2 to run.

@BenBrocka I need to finish one and two... But I can't. >_>

Oh yeah, does anyone else have Dead Space 3 on PC? I kinda want to try the multiplayer, but it's not really the sort of game I'd want to co op

@Fluttershy Too scared?

4:03 PM
@OrigamiRobot Heck yes girlfriend.

I'm not your girlfriend

FAE
@OrigamiRobot To my chagrin.

@Fluttershy Might try 2 first then, it's more actiony than horrory, compared to the first game. Both still awesome though

@FAE shush, you

FAE
4:05 PM
@OrigamiRobot ^_^

Interestingly Dead Space 2's biggest "flaw" might be that it's combat system is very fun and usable, which makes it less scary
But I'm not the type to be reduced to a pile of sobs and terror by horror games anyway

A: Steam 64bit Package Dependinces Couldn't be Resolved

RetrosaurAlright, I've figured this out. What you need to do is, before trying to download Steam, you have to update your system. You can do this two ways, either going to the top left hand corner and clicking the dashboard icon, then search for Update, then update your stuff, or manually: sudo apt-get...

@YiJiang'sEvilClone US starts plans to launch own meteor, general quoted as saying "We cannot allow a meteor gap"

@Powerlord So many views already. It seems a lot of people are either trying out Steam on Ubuntu, or they just want to get a penguin.

I'm reading up the books so quickly... I thought I'd need a week for the Xeelee omnibus. I've already finished 2/4 of the stories after 2 days

FAE
4:06 PM
@BenBrocka @Fluttershy's a scaredy cat for scary games

@Retrosaur It's the penguin.

@FAE And I'm not afraid to admit it.

It's a shame, they're great games in lots of ways, and definitely enjoyable aside from the scary angle too

@BenBrocka It took me two years to work up the courage to play Bioshock. And I have owned Amnesia for quite a while, but I can't play it

@Fluttershy Amnesia is boring.

4:10 PM
I found amnesia a really great idea but not actually executed very well
Lots of boring, and hiding doesn't seem to actually work very well. And it totally ruins the suspense when you just know you're going to die

Also, being scared in games and/or dreams is awesome. All the adrenaline, none of the real danger.

I believe in my let's play I literally say "%^&$ it just kill me" a number of times in that game
In fact I found Justine to be much more enjoyable
@OrigamiRobot I prefer the creepiness/story of horror games more than the "scary" bit. I rarely get any sort of scared feeling, but I love the twisted stuff in Silent Hill and the sci fi stuff and screwed up realizations in Dead Space
Cut off their limbs > shoot them in the head
Though Dead Space 3 has head-shooty enemies and limb-cutty enemies now

Heh. I'm going to be amused if I get a Reversal badge on Meta.SO.

@FAE I was going to say this but didn't want to spoil anything.

@StrixVaria flags

4:15 PM
@BenBrocka As an overall experience, I agree. I can still appreciate the jump out and scare you moments though.

FAE
@StrixVaria Knowing it exists isn't a spoiler anyway, just if I named who it was used on.

@fbueckert Did you answer the raging guy with poor English skills?

@Retrosaur You know what, I'm going to submit what I told you earlier as an answer.

@FAE Balefire solves everything.

In fact, I already have.

4:15 PM
Except holding the fabric of the world together.

@fbueckert Been reading Wheel of Time again?

@BenBrocka Yes.
@Powerlord Just started Book 1 again today.

@FAE Hey! I didn't know it was used on anybody!
Knowing what it does is kind of spoilery too, though.

FAE
@BenBrocka Atmosphere and psychological horror is way more enjoyable for me.

@fbueckert I'm sorry.
The more I read of WoT the less I want to keep reading.

4:16 PM
@StrixVaria Don't be. I love the series.

What should I do now?

Hmm, if I use Balefire on someone, does their child then disappear?

@OrigamiRobot That's what I just don't get much of a jolt out of, unless I'm really in danger. Though I can appreciate Dead Space, especially DS1, does those really well

It's currently 12am in the morning here

@StrixVaria I have a friend who feels the same way. He has strongly implored me to never start the series.

4:17 PM
@FAE Agreed, which is why I had high hopes for Amnesia...but it didn't deliver
Also, "fighting" Pyramid Head on a tiny stairwell was way more tense than jumpscares could ever be

@JasonBerkan I feel like I'm required to finish it, though.

FAE
@BenBrocka I haven't played it yet. I find it very difficult to find good horror movies like this. Most American/Hollywood horror is just cheap shock horror or torture porn, and I'm like "eh" on that.

I'm only on book 5 of 14, but I'm too invested to give up.

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Make more pony stuff.

@StrixVaria He feels the same way.

FAE
4:18 PM
@StrixVaria Sunk cost fallacy?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone Redundancyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Though he's farther along than you are.

@FAE I can't find horror movies appealing at all. The games are a much more immersive experience. And, oddly enough, often have much better and well thought out stories than horror movies

FAE
@StrixVaria This is why I feel compelled to finish the Sword of Truth series, unfortunately.

What I want to know about balefire is this: If Person A kills Person B, then Person A is killed with balefire, what happens to Person B. If that is never covered in the series, I might stop reading right now.

4:19 PM
Compare Fatal Frame, Silent Hill or Dead Space to... "Oh look there's a monster and it's killin' everybody up in here"

FAE
@StrixVaria Dunno, I haven't gotten that far.

@BenBrocka THe only time I got legitimately scared by a game and had to stop playing for a moment was in one of the FEAR games. They spent a lot of time showing you that if the little girl touches you, you are instadead. Then they have her show up in random places. It very unnerving. This specific time, I was looking for some kind of puzzle piece or something and when I turned around, she was right behind me reaching up.
Then she dissolved.

FAE
@BenBrocka I do like Event Horizon.

@OrigamiRobot I felt the opposite. When the little girl was around I felt safe because I knew there weren't any aimbot enemies with too much health around.

@OrigamiRobot I had a similar experience with Bioshock, in what appeared to be a water-filled morgue.
It involved a teddy bear.

4:20 PM
@OrigamiRobot I jumped out of my seat during the Sander Cohen level of BioShock. I turned around and there was a statue that wasn't there before. Walked right up close to it and then it attacked.

Huh, I don't recall her ever getting that close except in some things that were too-obviously cutscenes were I couldn't die

FAE
I've been told to check out more Japanese horror if I want psychological horror.

@Fluttershy Well, there is an idea floating around my head. Something simple

That's what I liked about Dead Space; there's basically no cutscenes were you can't die, unless someone's talking

I played that level a few more times to see what the mechanics of that encounter are. After you pass a certain point, she follows you around and waits for you to turn around. It's really creepy.

4:21 PM
@JasonBerkan Do you know the scene I'm talking about? With the teddy bear sitting on a shelf? And you go to look at it, and blam!

FAE
@BenBrocka I still haven't finished this game yet.
I really should.

This all reminds me

@BenBrocka I couldn't play Dead Space (half because of the controls, and half because there was not a single instant where you could let your guard down).

@Fluttershy It's not ringing any bells, but it's been awhile since I played BioShock.

@StrixVaria Nah, all the combat stuff was boring. My favorite part was looking for all the instances where Alma showed up that were really subtle and easy to miss.

4:22 PM
I haven't even played Dead Space

@FAE You should. Excellent game

Or Bioshock

@StrixVaria Really? The controls were pretty damn good for a console shooter. Though I opted for PC this time around

remind me never to look away from this window again. far too much stuff just happened :(

@OrigamiRobot The combat was terrible. I didn't say that it was good. It's just that the combat was also brutal, so I felt safer around the creepy little girl.

4:22 PM
@BenBrocka btw, Antichamber

@StrixVaria Book 5.

@BenBrocka The port for PC was abysmal.

FAE
@SaintWacko Another I've started and haven't finished. I have terrible Gaming ADD.

And you're safe when the tense music stops. Until something pops in the room to kill you

@fbueckert Hey that's the book I'm in!

4:22 PM
Won't spoil too much, but yes, they address it.

@StrixVaria Oh, that's your problem. I've heard DS3 is the first where the PC port is decent

I bet it happens to Mat.
He always gets shafted.

Odd as it sounds you might actually want to try it with a controller then

I've got gaming OCD, I'm happy to put upto 600 hours into star ocean 4 just to get all teh achivements (and I'll enjoy it :/ )

Wait, did I just post a spoiler about the game I just mentioned?

4:23 PM
@BenBrocka I actually have a controller for my PC now, so I could try it again.

@StrixVaria Heh. Shafted. He carries a spear, so that's funny.

@fbueckert YES SOMEONE GOT IT

@StrixVaria I never had a real problem with the combat. I just snuck around with the shotgun. Also the spikegun. The guy in the powersuit was pretty brutal though.

@StrixVaria Also, the Plasma Cutter is your friend. The other weapons can be fun as hell, but the Cutter works on everything

@BenBrocka Yeah the cutter was definitely my go-to.

FAE
4:24 PM
@djsmiley2k My biggest problem is that I'm a perfectionist with a short attention span. So I end up with all the stress and freaking out about missable achievements and doing stuff right for completion with none of the end results of actually finishing anything.

Mat is the only character in WoT that I give any shits about whatsoever.

9 hours ago, by Yi Jiang's Evil Clone
It sounded utterly, incredibly insane and stupid. Which is of course why I had to try it.

I love me the flame-thrower though. And in the second game the spear gun is just so damn awesome

@FAE hahaha sux. :/

Even though it sort of ignores the cut off their limbs thing, it is soooo satisfying
thunk Zzzzzt Kaboom

4:25 PM
@FAE I have the same problem :(

FAE
@StrixVaria I want Egwene to die in a fire. A lot. Alot a lot.

@FAE I like her more now starting in Book 5, actually.
Nynaeve can die in a fire, though.

@FAE I finished all the sidequest stuff in Skyrim and then stopped because the main quest was boring.

FAE
@StrixVaria Her and Nynaeve and like every female character (minus Min maybe, for a bit) were why I stopped reading before. I couldn't stand them.

@StrixVaria Also, if you keep your health "blue" most of the time nothing can one-hit kill you, unless you're on hardcore
And in hardcore I think at max health nothing can one hit you

4:26 PM
I never finished Deus Ex 3 because I spent like 50 hours on the first level doing every possible thing I could.

I guess I'll just read a book until I can't keep my eyes open

@FAE Every single character in WoT is "as stubborn as a mule" and has an unbelievable ignorance for the opposite gender.

I love how someone reports a bug to me and their only description is "it doesn't look right"

FAE
@StrixVaria Yeeeeeeah.

Hey, the SimCity tag appears to be fixed now cc @badp
No response on the MSO question though.

4:29 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone What's your idea?

omg I think I'm actually melting in this office. There is something wrong with these people

@StrixVaria Also the..."shotgun" thing, the graviton accelerator, is a great "GTF away from me!" gun. Primary fire knocks away targets, secondary fire is lethal

Translate that old Flash animation of Twilight following your cursor into HTML
Twilight's eyes, that is. Should be a simple enough exercise

@FAE The ladies come into their own, starting with Book 6.

Let me see if I can find the original

4:33 PM
@BenBrocka I don't know if I had that.
I only played the first 3-4 "levels" and that was like 6 months ago, so my memory is foggy.

FAE
@fbueckert Yeah, I'm going to stick it out this time. Jochem reminded me that when it starts out, they're still pretty young, so it's not inappropriate for them to be acting as immature as they do.

@fbueckert Like I said, Egwene is starting to be interesting in book 5.

Also called the Force Gun. I forget when you get it
I've played both like 3 times in new game plus so I totally forget all progression of items

@StrixVaria Wait until end of Book 6. She becomes a force to be reckoned with.

4:35 PM
@fbueckert I will have to. There is no way I'm reading two WoT books back to back.

user15026
@agent86 I am also feeling like that. :P

Also playing it on easy easier difficulties significantly reduces the risk of sudden dead in Dead Space. I don't care for that personally though, since checkpoints are common enough and I'm pretty good at it anyway

Try booping her nose

4:37 PM
I only ever had trouble in that stupid playthrough where you only get 3 saves at hardest difficulty in DS 2. Stupid unskippable intro cutscene

FAE
@YiJiang'sEvilClone lol

@YiJiang'sEvilClone You should do one of those for Derpy... <_< That'd be hilarious.

@AshleyNunn :(, have a cookie

@BenBrocka I only played on easy, and I stopped playing after I spent like 20 minutes trying to kill this big brutish thing on 4 legs that charged at me, using all my ammo to finally get it down. Then I went to the next area and there were 2 of them. That's when I stopped.

@StrixVaria Heck, at that rate, I'll tear through the series (again) before you do.

4:38 PM
@fbueckert There is no doubt in my mind that that would happen even if I read them consecutively.

@StrixVaria You could space them out with Neil Gaiman! =D

@Fluttershy Yeah he's on the list. I'm probably reading a Dresden Files book after this and then it's up in the air.

@StrixVaria Probably. :P

user15026
@agent86 No. :P

I need bacon! 61!
@AshleyNunn So... 999?

4:39 PM
@StrixVaria Gotcha.

@Fluttershy Derpy is, uh, a little weird

@YiJiang'sEvilClone That's the point. =P Her eyes wouldn't know what to do!

@StrixVaria You did shoot for the limbs, right? It's not fucking around about that. Most creatures die after 2 limbs are removed (head only counts as maybe half a limb). You can also slow most enemies down by cutting off a leg or weaken their attack by cutting off the pointy bits

@BenBrocka Yeah but they were armored from the front and took a good number of shots from the back (which was hard to line up due to the control issue).

If you're talking about the Brutes they're pretty nasty though, you might need Stasis
Yeah that's a Brute, gotta get behind, Stasis and shoot the yellow weak points to take off their arms, I think
I think some guns are better against brutes but it's been a long time. Cutter works, but it might not be the absolute best
Oh right, the flamethrower is great on those guys

4:43 PM
@fbueckert I'm going to buy Mistborn today

I know. I'm just thinking how can the crazy eye effect be maintained

And the Ripper, I think you can take them down with one or two blades with a steady hand and some upgrades

@AshleyNunn FINE.

One eye should aim above the cursor, the other below. That should do.

@OrigamiRobot I heartily approve of this.

4:44 PM
I don't know if I wanna jump the gun and buy the whole series
Going places is so inconvenient.

@OrigamiRobot Buy it all.

It's a waste if I don't like it for some reason.
I don't think I wont, but still.

@OrigamiRobot At worst, you spend an extra $20.

I don't like to waste things.

where4 are you buying em?

4:49 PM
@OrigamiRobot I've noticed.
Well, you're going to waste either time, or money.

I dunno, some bookstore near where I'm going for lunch.

Time, if you like the series, going back and buying the rest.

can you return them sealed?

@fbueckert The books will go to waste if I don't read them.

@OrigamiRobot That's where donating them to a library would work.
The only possible way to not waste time or money is to buy the whole series, read it, and like it.

4:51 PM
@fbueckert Or buy one and hate it.

@JasonBerkan Or that.

Though you may consider reading that one book a waste of time, then.

But that's not a valid option, in my books.

@JasonBerkan It is, but wasting one book is better than wasting three.

Uh, why not borrow the book from a library?

user15026
4:53 PM
@fbueckert Libraries are really picky about donations. A lot of them don't take donations of books, or they are very selective.

Personally, I think no time with a book is wasted.

What is this? 1990?
@JasonBerkan Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted.

@AshleyNunn Wow. Free books. Libraries won't take them?

Ethan Frome was easily wasted time.
Fuck that book.

user15026
@fbueckert Not necessarily, no. They don't want books that won't circulate, or that they already have many copies of, etc, etc.

4:54 PM
@AshleyNunn You'd think they'd then reach out to other, smaller, libraries, and pass the books on.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot I remember reading that in HS, but I don't remember much about it other than it was very dry.

I just donate everything to one of those goodwill-type places. they'll take practically anything, and then you can write it off on taxes.

@JasonBerkan I've found some books I wasn't able to get through, but they're unbelievably dry.

@FAE I mean the overall story was super fucked up and depressing, it was just sooooooooo boring.

FAE
@JasonBerkan Atlas Shrugged.

user15026
4:55 PM
@fbueckert There are limited networks for that, and they really don't have the funding to deal with all of the books people want to drop off - that takes manpower and the like, and most libraries are massively underfunded as it is

I've got a box of old computer parts I'm going to take over there. they have a computer shop of sorts where they sell computers they've cobbled together, along with replacement parts

@agent86 OMG those poor books T_T

@AshleyNunn It all comes back to money, I guess.

@JasonBerkan Depends what you're doing with it

user15026
@agent86 That's where I take a lot of things I don't need. And the books they don't sell either go to a recycling place, or they are sent to overseas places that need books. :)

4:56 PM
I suppose I should let my local libraries know that I'm willing to do book transports.

FAE
@fbueckert There's also stuff like Bookcrossing

If I buy a book, where it goes next is my responsibility. I want to make sure it's appreciated.

@FAE Eh? Never heard of it.

If you buy a book and then don't want it anymore, you should see if you can get it added to archive.org
or open libary or something

FAE
@fbueckert Here you go

4:58 PM
@FAE Oh, that's a neat idea.

FAE
@fbueckert Aye. :)

Kinda like what people do with writing numbers on money, to track it's progress.

FAE
@fbueckert Right. You can also just do direct swaps with people, you don't have to leave it somewhere.

user15026
@fbueckert Depending what you mean by that, it isn't going to be as helpful as you would like.

@FAE Leaving it outside in Winnipeg during Winter would very quickly make the book unreadable.

4:59 PM
@FAE I don't know. Even when I've read a book I've hated, or gave up on a book because it sucked, I still learned something.

@AshleyNunn Eh? How not?
