At a guess, they're trying to get new players to offset the 3 million players they've lost over the last two years.

Also, Valve has a new mutation system for L4D2... the Expanded Mutation System (still in Beta).

It'd be nice if Valve would actually update their server code to actually allow server mods to be written in something other than C++, particularly since they haven't updated the official SDK since 2007.

The official SDK that doesn't work for Left 4 Dead or anything newer.
