2:00 AM
@DJMcMayhem why?

Will there be a username prefix or something?

@ColdGolf And rewrite all 70+ interpreters in JavaScript?

@RohanJhunjhunwala I disagree with having accounts on TIO, unless there's an edit history and I can link my SO account without making an entirely new one.
@Dennis Maybe use versions readily available on GitHub?

@ColdGolf why>
@ColdGolf even if @Dennis could automagically write all the interpreters, that wouldnt speed up the output. The in browser code will run incredibly slow

@ColdGolf why?

2:02 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala Like I said, browser code is only a last resort.

Anonymous
It's certainly faster to run a process on a real machine and send the output via AJAX than it is to run it in a JS interpreter inside of a browser sandbox

But it wouldnt actually help

@ColdGolf Why do you delete a message, then repost it?

@Dennis emscripten?

2:03 AM
^ Mego's response hits the nail on the head

@Dennis I always press the edit button by mistake instead of pressing the enter key. :D

that makes no sense whatsoever
The edit button wont delete a post
And its hard to "accidentally" press edit

@RohanJhunjhunwala If you mean the in-URL links, they're handled on the client-side. The server doesn't know if you entered the code yourself or clicked a link. This will still be possible, and a completely separate feature from server-side permalinks.

@Dennis Server-side permalinks is a big problem.
You need backups everywhere.

I already have those.

Anonymous
2:05 AM
Sending some bytes through an AJAX call on the internet takes on the order of milliseconds. An interpreter implemented in client-side, browser Javascript will almost certainly be slower than the same interpreter implemented in whatever language(s) it currently uses, with the exception of those languages that do run on client-side browser Javascript.

@Dennis oh ok

@RohanJhunjhunwala If TIO goes down, maybe.

Why would anyone run a service without backups?

@Mego Which is why I said last resort.

Oh yeah my response was foolish

@Dennis You'd be surprised.

@Dennis Because they hate their users and themselves?

There are two types of people in this world: the ones who meticulously back up everything, and the ones who haven't had a hard drive fail on them yet.

lol I didn't realise please dont hate me ;(

2:06 AM
@Mego I'm both, believe it or not. I've had drives fail, but always had backups of them too :D

@Geobits What if the backup fails too?

@Dennis so just out of curiosity where do you store backups?

@RohanJhunjhunwala On AWS?

Anonymous
@Geobits Then you're just part of the first group. Always back up everything.

Or Azure, maybe?

@Mego Wait matt damon really went there??? /s

@Mego :) my life is better now

Anonymous
@Geobits The joke is, people usually don't start backing up stuff until they've had a catastrophic loss of data and learn their lesson the hard way.

2:09 AM
I know the joke. I always thought I was special though :/
:P

@Mego Please don't remind me.

@Mego My computer decided to kill itself for no reason. I had backups, but not Bootable backups, so it still sucked

@Mego I'm concerned that this will happen to me. I don't quite have enough money to actually have a backup HDD...

@El'endiaStarman Get a cheap USB3.0 128GB drive.

@El'endiaStarman Google Drive, Dropbox, and GitHub are your friends

Physical backups are your friends. Google Drive is your frenemy.

@NathanMerrill Do I have to be worried first? I tried doing that once....

Store all backups on papyrus scrolls. No worries of hardware failure

Hard drives aren't that expensive nowadays. If you compress your data as much as possible, you can probably find a drive cheap enough to store the backup.

@RohanJhunjhunwala My provider offers weekly backups, stored in a different data center.

@NathanMerrill Mostly code, yes.

@NathanMerrill actually, yeah. Having recently gone through reinstalling windows after it committed suicide, I didn't lose any code (github), I didn't technically lose any games (since I still have the stream license) but now I have to reinstall a bunch of crap, get my dotfiles, add stuff to %PATH%, change stuff back to where it used to be.

Some other sites, too. Amazon, wikipedia, etc.

@ColdGolf Yeah, 3 TB is double overkill for me. :P

@NathanMerrill I prefer the normal cmd.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Um, goats?

@ColdGolf because it doesn't require you to download something? That's like saying you like IE

2:27 AM
@NathanMerrill What's wrong with liking IE?

Everything.

@Dennis The Trident rendering engine isn't the whole of IE.
If you replaced IE's engine with Edge's engine, would you still say IE sucks?

Why?

I don't like the UI either

2:29 AM
@ColdGolf edge sucks only moderately less

@NathanMerrill That's just personal opinion.

I haven't used Edge. It's been a while since I used Windows.

Has anyone here heard off googles "Drop the mic" "feature"

I think so.

@ColdGolf "sucks" is an opinionated word

2:30 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala Yes. April Fool's prank that turned out to be a disaster and was removed relatively quickly.

also "liking" is an opinionated word @ColdGolf

@RohanJhunjhunwala I wouldn't call it a feature. Good thing I don't gmail.

@El'endiaStarman yeah, it would have been really cool if it wasnt so easy to accidentally hit it
@Dennis comment ammendd to reflect the "feature"

@NathanMerrill I can objectively say that IE may render some websites in a wrong way. The UI sucking is irrelevant.

@ColdGolf so your going against your own stance. aAnd providing an objective way of disproving your opinion.

2:32 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala ??

Earlier you said "What's wrong with liking IE"

If you don't like the UI, that doesn't mean IE sucks.

And now your providing a reason why one shouldnt like IE

@Dennis #zohomasterrace

I give up
I should have taken Mego's starred advice

2:34 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala IE'S UI doesn't look as horrible as you're imagining it.

@ColdGolf right, but we are debating whether we "like" IE. The fact that IE renders websites wrong is actually irrelevant to the conversation (in fact, I may like they way it renders). The entire debate is 100% opinion based, nothing objective

@NathanMerrill Liking the way it renders is just stretching the argument too far.

ie sucked before, im used to the ones that didn't suck, ie doesn't suck anymore, others don't too, i began liking others, ie sucks

its really not though. We can have objective examples for what we like and what we don't like but the fact is that "like" is purely opinion

@Downgoat hahaha, I hate zoho

2:35 AM
@DJMcMayhem ;_; y u haet?
first email service on google results, i should probably switch to another because it has horrible spam filter but that'll be too disruptive

@NathanMerrill I respectfully disagree with your opinion.

Aside from rendering issues, IE is good.

sure. I disagree, but that's fine :)

@NathanMerrill I disagree too.
I think you meant that you disagree on my disagreeing.
Not that you disagree in general.

@Downgoat 1. It's unreliable. It goes down frequently. 2. The editor doesn't wrap, so I have to horizontally scroll to read an email 3. They ask for TFA too often

hey I was digging throgh the old starred feed and found this gem.
I cant take it seriously

2:38 AM
But hey, it's free so there's that

Who has powers to remove deleted Comments
Mods only?

@DJMcMayhem Hah, a new browser would get nowhere if it weren't free. :P

And employees

Remove deleted posts that are already deleted, @RohanJhunjhunwala?

@ColdGolf ???

2:39 AM
@DJMcMayhem About your Gmail argument: 1. Is it any more unreliable than snail mail? 2. Why not temporarily use a text editor and then copy paste, then? 3. So what? Decline it.
@RohanJhunjhunwala When I delete something on chat, is it not gone forever?

@DJMcMayhem was that a response to me?

@El'endiaStarman I'm not so sure. I mean, say there was theoretically a killer browser...you might actually be able to make it profitable

@ColdGolf nothing is gone forever

@RohanJhunjhunwala If you're talking chat messages, mods can delete (or edit) them at any time, and I think room owners can delete them at any time too. The person who posted the message can edit and/or delete it within 2 minutes of posting.

@RohanJhunjhunwala You know what I mean.

2:40 AM
@ColdGolf not really

@El'endiaStarman Edit too?
They can mess with my old chat messages?

@El'endiaStarman so can a room owner look at the deleted messages?

@ColdGolf They can, yes. Pretty much never happens, though.

@ColdGolf there is still the edit history

@El'endiaStarman Why is it even a feature, though?

2:41 AM
But all mods are good individuals who obtain community trust

@RohanJhunjhunwala Perhaps. I'm not totally sure since I can't be a room owner (since I'm a mod).

So It would never happen

@RohanJhunjhunwala Why is it even a feature, though?

@El'endiaStarman hooray for mod-dom!

@ColdGolf Perhaps you left some personally identifiable information, like a home address, in one of your messages...

2:42 AM
@El'endiaStarman you can't be a room owner?

@El'endiaStarman so because you moderate Christianity you can't own a room here
seems dubious

Anonymous
@El'endiaStarman Room owners can't delete. They can only move them to Trash.

@El'endiaStarman You said it almost never happens. Wouldn't it be better if that's because it couldn't technically happen, even if you wanted to, rather than you not choosing to use the feature?

@DJMcMayhem Actually, I take that back. I can be and am a room owner of at least one chat room, but my mod privileges include room owner privileges.

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Room owners have a subset of mod abilities. He can't be just a room owner and not also a mod (unless he changed his chat profile's parent site to a site where he's not a mod, but I'm not sure that would work).

2:43 AM
@ColdGolf if you do something bad say drop the F Bomb, the mod needs permission to edit out the F bomb
@Mego ok that makes sense

@Mego Yeah, I could do that. I'd lose mod privileges in chat everywhere.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Who says they won't edit other stuff too?

@RohanJhunjhunwala normal users can flag tho

@ColdGolf the moderators get elected

Anonymous
2:44 AM
Dropping the f-bomb isn't in of itself bad. If you use it in a not-nice way, then yeah there'd be a problem. But if you said it in the context of a certain esoteric programming language, it'd be fine.

@Downgoat Who?

@RohanJhunjhunwala And? They could still edit my chat posts to their whims and desires, if so they wished.

@Dennis zoho.com

@DJMcMayhem thats an interesting query

@ColdGolf If any mod started doing that, they would risk losing modship.

2:45 AM
@ColdGolf if they abused they would lose moderator privileges
^

@El'endiaStarman What if the feature wasn't just there at all in the first place?
What if mods could only delete, but not edit?

Mods get elected, and thus are very honest people who earn the communities trust as such they have privileges to ensure that this sight is clean

@RohanJhunjhunwala Well, what if, to prevent abuse, mods can outright delete chat posts, but not edit them?

@DJMcMayhem i dont see any outages. how frequently did they happen to yuo?

> Watch all the ads
Sounds legit.

2:46 AM
@DJMcMayhem @Mego I mean it in the context of f (fill in the blanks) you I hate you sort of comment. A mod could either edit out the profanity or delete it

i recieve important emails through zoho and if there is chance they wont get through tahts bad

A comment like brainf*** is a hard language is perfectly fine

@RohanJhunjhunwala I prefer outright deletion for bad chat posts, to prevent possible abuse of the editing feature.

@RohanJhunjhunwala Fuckin-A right it is

@Downgoat idk, but my coworkers complain about it all the time

2:47 AM
@Geobits seems a bit extreme
lol

@ColdGolf And the deletion privilege can't be abused either?

but it did make me laugh

A bit, maybe.

@ColdGolf there is an edit history on all edits

@El'endiaStarman Well, at least you could bring the posts back with the edit history.

And you'd guarantee that the original user made the edits, not anybody else.

2:48 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala mods can edit those too iirc

oh rip
But they need to imho

@RohanJhunjhunwala yes, that's true, and they can also be flagged

If someone posts some hate speech
@DJMcMayhem in the end when you flag a mod looks at it

@RohanJhunjhunwala Then have a mod remove the hate speech.

@DJMcMayhem Yes, which is a recent feature. If someone posted their home address (say) and later edited it out, mods can purge the edit history so no one else can find it there.

2:49 AM
@RohanJhunjhunwala well, mods and 10k users (like me)
Unless it's a mod flag

@El'endiaStarman A good thing, too. I know at least one user's address here by "accident".

@El'endiaStarman If mods can purge the entire edit history too, then that's a huge potential for abuse of the feature. A huge one, I tell you.

@DJMcMayhem well at the high end of the rep scale (especially on a sight like ours not yet fully graduated) high rep users are basically mods in terms of privileges

@Geobits hahaha, how does that come up by accident?

@DJMcMayhem Blackmailing the user by accident? /s

2:50 AM
@Geobits >_> i think i onced accidentally posted my github password in here once but that never got purged ;_;

how do you "accidentally" post your github password?

@RohanJhunjhunwala it's actually 10k on the whole network, not just the site

@DJMcMayhem Let's just say someone with an unusual surname posted it once and it's a really short google hop away at that point.

@Downgoat Hopefully you changed your GitHub password, didn't you?

@DJMcMayhem whoops
@DJMcMayhem what I meant was that this a community moderated sight (good thing) and high rep users (rightfully have lots of useful privileges)

2:51 AM
@Geobits You want us to find it? Really?

@RohanJhunjhunwala what?

You won't find it. That's the point. It was edited out by a mod.

@RohanJhunjhunwala well its not my password exactly but its rather long so i have to copy and paste it into terminal often
