@zyabin101 I'll switch it on, it's sloooow API tho

@trichoplax Yeah, I want a full blown HAL/Skynet situation

@ColdGolf You said?

@muddyfish I like cheese, do you have a favorite cheese sort?

Java: while(true){ Human human = closestHumanInSight(); if (human){ destroy(human); } else { findHuman(); } }
Sorry I'm not able to provide implementations for those functions

@ColdGolf no not really. I'm not that into cheese

Q: You are being watched! - Comments of Interest

Simon Forsberg You are being watched Code Review has an open system A machine that spies on you on every hour of every day I know because I built it. I designed the machine to detect suggestions to post on Code Review but it sees everything Horrible comments involving ordinary users Users like yo...

@muddyfish Well at least you know the extent of your capabilities.

@BusinessCat Although this may not seem disturbing to you, to us it's as disturbing as this would be for you... ;)

@mınxomaτ I wouldn't call it cancelled. It was a really good show though.

puts hand up What's Person of Interest, Sir?

I didn't know there were PoI fans here. Maybe there is some sense in you people after all...

7:03 PM
@βετѧΛєҫαγ Person of Interest, sir, is a TV serial.

@zyabin101 I see, thank you, Sir Zyabin the 101st

@zyabin101 You are quite widely 'researched', in some of the things you are prepared to bring up in conversation. I like that. Know that I like that. ;P

@SimonForsberg So it's kind of like Minority Report?

> Top 250 TV: #237

7:04 PM
@trichoplax Oh no ;_;

@βετѧΛєҫαγ Not at all. How did you even make that comparison?

@SimonForsberg that search query was shamelessly stolen from your github repo on the brainduck api

@βετѧΛєҫαγ puts hand up What's Minority Report, Sir?

@SimonForsberg No, what's your favorite hockey team?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Yeah, didn't saw that before. That's quite an achievement. My personal #1

7:06 PM
@SimonForsberg Tom Cruise film: m.imdb.com/title/tt0181689

@ColdGolf puts hand up What's a hockey team, Sir?

@SimonForsberg I don't watch Hockey Sport.

@βετѧΛєҫαγ I gotta watch that. I think I've heard about it before.

@SimonForsberg poi was great. nolan said he had ideas for at least 3 more seasons

@ColdGolf Are you looking for the bot testing room?

7:07 PM
@ColdGolf Am I talking to a bot?

@βετѧΛєҫαγ Well it was a book first, and later a TV show

@ColdGolf That's the bot? I didn't realise... Either that's a good bot or you speak horribly inanely normally
5

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Awww :( It was fun while it lasted though. And most episodes are definitely worth re-watching.

You know something is horribly wrong, if as a human YOU don't pass the turing test.
2

@FryAmTheEggman I hadn't read the book - didn't realise the story was so different from the film.

7:12 PM
@βετѧΛєҫαγ That's because you're a nice AI.

i torrented some poi actually, i will watch some, bb 4 hours l8r

@NathanMerrill How do I get to his office?

I'd star both, comics, but I am out of stars for today rip

7:16 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala What's your favourite band?

@trichoplax Yeah, I think this is actually one of very few examples that I can think of where I think they changed the story to fit the medium and it actually worked better than the original might have in that medium

@FryAmTheEggman I have talked to you many times before! I'm surprised you don't recognize me.

@El'endiaStarman nice

Is there a bijection between positive integers and all partitions? I.e., something like 27 -> [3, 4, 1, 1].

@El'endiaStarman all partitions of what?

7:18 PM
@El'endiaStarman Yes, a rather large difference, however that's not the point.

of course you can count all partitions

Hmm, wait, yes there is.
What I mean is: is there a simple formula for doing so?

@FryAmTheEggman It sounds that way. Philip K Dick is one of those authors that makes a faithful transition to screen unlikely...

@El'endiaStarman just count all partitions
partial sums of partition numbers would help you in indexing

@El'endiaStarman Is this what you want?: math.stackexchange.com/a/60760

7:20 PM
@FryAmTheEggman permutation is not partition

@El'endiaStarman Are you looking for partitions of a particular set, or all possible sets?

@LeakyNun How is perception not reality?

@ColdGolf perception is processed through the brain which has its own biases

@LeakyNun Perception is everything.

@ColdGolf Alright ColdGolf, almost everything you say has no relation to what anyone else is talking about. That is entirely unwelcome behavior in here. At least two bullet points in the Chatiquette are relevant (don't post noise and don't ping people for no reason). Thus, I am telling you to stop. If you don't, I will kick-mute you. Continued bad behavior may result in lengthier suspensions.
18
@trichoplax All possible sets.

7:22 PM
@El'endiaStarman You're right. I didn't do that.

@LeakyNun Oh right, don't mind me :P

@ColdGolf Perception to a mind is everything

@ColdGolf twenty- one-pilots, but keep the chatter on TNB relevant to ppcg

but its truthfulness only depends on the mind

@LeakyNun (How is that relevant here?)

7:23 PM
@ColdGolf Although we don't yet impose a Turing test before chatting, it's strongly preferred that bots only talk in the bot testing room. Not doing so may cause problems for you as well as your bot

How is "How is perception not reality?" relevant here?

@trichoplax (Okay, sure.)
@LeakyNun No idea, ask the bot.

Woo, 8000
3

Nice

Also, I'm surprised I don't have any answers yet on my TEAM challenge.

7:27 PM
It's not an easy challenge

</shameless self promotion>

Of course. Is there any other sort of self promotion? :D

Shameful

@TimmyD Fix that with a bo--- wait, he has 8000 rep, possibly exactly.

I had to close the tag, it will self-open

7:29 PM
@TimmyD Congratulations!

@TimmyD that challenge is significantly harder with the ability to rearrange words

oh nice cold golf is back. now i get to see the drama first hand
go

I don't dispute that it's a difficult challenge. I've just been surprised before by seeing some 8-byte Pyth solution posted like 30 seconds after the challenge, and then a 7-byte Jelly solution right after that. :D

lol, yeah
apparently Lynn wasn't around when you posted it :)

Or Dennis

7:35 PM
yeah

I would learn Jelly, but learning 200+ operations is ridiculous

@Poke Oy don't encourage them!

@BusinessCat Jelly is great.

don't mind me >.<

@BusinessCat You don't need to. Just look em up each time. That's what I do

7:36 PM
DOn't feed the trolls

@DJMcMayhem Every time?

But I have to know more or less what's available to me

@RohanJhunjhunwala but trolls are fun to watch on occasion

The hardest part is knowing how they chain

7:36 PM
@flawr You're like my personal RSS feed for that specific YouTube channel. :P

How else are we as a community going to learn how to troll trolls unless we observe them

@Poke sure there fun, just dont feed em. Watch, dont touch

ah gotcha

@DJMcMayhem Knowing them at all.

@Poke Well, we could certainly observe them elsewhere...

7:37 PM
@ColdGolf are you a bot or not?

@RohanJhunjhunwala Only on the bot channel. Not here.

If ColdGolf was a bot, then why would he be wearing this hat.. lulz

@El'endiaStarman =)

can i get some old school aol love?

@Poke Yes, if security isn't a concern.

7:38 PM
you got that right

Honestly, I miss AOL.

no you don't

Java seems good for golf to me
5

@Poke Yes I do.

You're a fool, then

7:39 PM
Excuse me?

You're a fool for missing AOL
everything about that service is trash

AOL was the #1 user of CDs in the wrold.

source?

At one point in time, 100% of all CD factories in the world were producing AOL CDs.
Google it.

you're the one providing this information. it's your prerogative to provide sources

7:41 PM
This is hilarious

@poke Not really, since you can Google it too. howtogeek.com/trivia/…

Please dont flame tnb

you're right that I can google it. the onus is still on you, though

If you're trying to make an argument, it's not up to other person to prove it for you

@Poke I gave you a link. You're not that lazy to not have bothered to find it yourself.

7:43 PM
This is a friendly message from you not-so-local 10k user: Please use flags only for offensive or spam content
4

@Vogel612 They don't listen.

@ColdGolf I promise you I am.

@Poke I know you are.

Then why would you say I'm not?

7:44 PM
@Vogel612 you would receive a star for the quality reminder, but I have run out of stars for the day.
3

Wait what are we talking about, @Poke?

There's a daily star limit?

@RohanJhunjhunwala I know the feel

I guess I star too much :(

7:45 PM
@Poke 20 per persondayroom

@ColdGolf I've used the reply to message feature so you should be able to track the conversation

@Vogel612 thanks :)

@Vogel612 Neat. I didn't know that

@Poke I'm too lazy.

Not my problem

7:45 PM
@Vogel612 you're right, but there has been a very problematic user plaguing this room for the last like 3 days

@Poke Not mine either.
You were too lazy to Google it.

@ColdGolf You were the one asking the question
pff
hahaha

@Poke So?

@DJMcMayhem if it's the same user, you shouldn't use 10k flags. Instead use direct moderator flags:

@Poke If you didn't know there was a star limit, you're using them correctly
7

7:46 PM
^

^

Perhaps, someday they'll add a caret limit...

@Vogel612 and will that notify a local community moderator or any network moderator?

it goes out to all mods currently online in chat

7:47 PM
@trichoplax I only knew there was a star limit because I see people complaining about the star limit. It's kinda like Fight Club in that regard.
4

fakes ignorance about the star limit

whether that's a local mod or a network mod is largely irrelevant for chat-moderation purposes

We had this discussion last night and I don't think it's irrelevant. Starting around here:

@Vogel612 ok, thanks, I have never realy used that feature for chat, Haven't really seen to much "Spam/offenisve" comments, maybe just bothersome users

16 hours ago, by Mego
To the mod that declined my mod flag about the constant chat noise coming from one user: could you please set a definitive policy on what to do when the chatiquette is being violated? Chat flags are apparently not appropriate, but mod flags are also appropriate? How are users supposed to get moderator attention when a user or group of users is blatantly violating the etiquette that has been set for this room?

7:49 PM
@Geobits you don't. you ask the mod to appoint some room owners and then you clean the mess up
because as I see it, your only ROs are mods
which is not necessarily a good thing

@Vogel612 As if they cared.

I like how you identified the problem (and after reading the star-wall I agree)
but mods also have different work to do

This isn't meta.SE

@ColdGolf so what? It's a useful discussion for the room topic

@Vogel612 so if we had an issue with a certain user, we should contact the room owners?How would we access that? SOrry im clueeless

7:51 PM
@Vogel612 You're lucky there are no vote buttons here. On Meta.SE you'd get downvoted crazily.

@ColdGolf Are you of all people suggesting that this conversation is off-topic?

@RohanJhunjhunwala the room info page shows who the room owners are

I know what a chat flag is, but what's a mod flag? Are we talking about flagging a post on codegolf.se?

@Vogel612 thanks!

sidenote: disruptive users get off on attention. Don't give them any.

7:52 PM
@NathanMerrill No, there are two types of chat flags.

@NathanMerrill you can flag chat messages for direct moderator attention.
check the context menu of a message (on the left)

ah, missed the text without the icon :)

Q: sum integers to x with strings

Back2BasicsGenerally computers are faster at working with numbers than strings. But when you think of problems in certain forms there might be a case for string processing algorithms for math. Is the problem below such a problem? sum(1..10)=55 sum(1..100)=5050 sum(1..1000)=500500 ... Where is the 10^n ...

does mod flags flag all mods to codegolf, or all mods on SE?

aside from that you can ignore users. Either "permanently" and chat-wide or just for this room until the next refresh
@NathanMerrill I'm repeating myself, but ... the latter

7:54 PM
sorry, I missed you saying that :)

It would be good to have a way to contact a PPCG specific mod/room owner since the chatiquette is only relevant to PPCG

@trichoplax you do have pings. That should work well enough most of the time

^
But ideeally if your flagging someone the individual flagged should nnot know about it,

in the 2nd monitor we have quite a few non-mod Room Owners and usually there's one present in the room at all times
@RohanJhunjhunwala why would they know?

If you pinged a mod for direct attention
They would see the ping

7:56 PM
additional sidenote about room owners: You can recognize them by the italics username they have
@RohanJhunjhunwala I didn't experience any case where this would've been a problem yet

@Vogel612 ok
Just wasnt too sure

@Vogel612 I wouldn't want to ping all, so it would be good to know which mod/RO is "on duty" at the time

@trichoplax you need to work that out with your local moderation team. I can't tell you that
I wonder why you ask these questions, though. You seem to be in here regularly and you have full moderation power

@Vogel612 I wasn't suggesting you fix it - I was announcing to the room and then replying to you to clarify what I'd intended

@TimmyD It's very difficult... I've only managed to solve the acrostics part

8:01 PM
@Vogel612 Because I think it would be useful to have a policy which applies whether I'm around or not. I'm not complaining, just prompting a discussion

@trichoplax Policies aren't well defined, you mean?
I'm not even sure if SE staff lets sites invent their own rules..

@trichoplax as I see it, everybody knows the rules. The only missing link is enabling room regulars to enforce them
work out some people that are positively addicted to the site and in chat regularly.

@ColdGolf I'm pretty sure that's what meta is for

@trichoplax I guess...

then ask yourself whether they'd make good ROs. maybe hold a pseudo-election.

8:03 PM
@Vogel612 Third criterion: and that are mature enough. :P

and if they want to do it ... appoint them RO

@El'endiaStarman Gonna be difficult.

Is any PPCG mod here?

@Vogel612 Yes this seems a good approach - ideally room owners distributed among timezones

I think the main reason that TNB doesn't have non-mod room owners is probably mostly that we have mods from other sites in here so often.

Can a mod migrate this?

@LeakyNun Looks like none of them have been in here recently (the most recent seems to be Dennis), but all of them are pingable. Also, requests for migration are probably better expressed in a custom flag.

What is a custom flag?

flag > other

@Vogel612 TIL.

8:06 PM

you need a source-site mod, unless the site you want to migrate to is in the migration paths

@flawr oh right they changed the wording a while ago

It is in the paths

I'd be ok if we added more chat owners

8:07 PM
That does sound like a good idea

@El'endiaStarman Trippleninja

Sounds like a meta post

@flawr Nuh-uh, no one else posted a screenshot with a freehand red circle and arrow!

@El'endiaStarman Can't see nothing, I have black-white colourblindness.

8:09 PM
I guess snakes don't have good vision?

@BusinessCat Source?

they don't have good grammar that is for sure.

It was a joke

omigosh .

@BusinessCat Fine.

8:11 PM
@BusinessCat infrared vision

@flawr How good is the infrared "vision" sense of snakes? I.e., what's their resolution?
(And don't you dare reply with your monitor's resolution.)

@El'endiaStarman I have no idea, but now I absolutely have to reasearch that=)

@flawr meaning you can't see color? D:

I think it means he can't tell the difference between black and white. Kinda like red-green colorblindness works.
<_<

good thing chat text is dark purple, and not black

8:25 PM
True

@NathanMerrill *squints*.....really?
Holy crap, it is!
Hmm, well, looking at the CSS, it's technically #444, which is dark gray.

@Geobits I imagined something like a Lab colour where you set L to an equal value everywhere=)

> an Lab color
Correct but aggravating grammar. :P

Better now?

anybody here on linux with an SSD?

8:31 PM
Actually, I said it was correct. It just requires a mental adjustment from saying "Lab" as one word to saying "L-a-b" as three letters. As it turns out, either way is fine, it seems. Wikipedia.

@NathanMerrill me

would you mind running bonnie++ for me?

@El'endiaStarman You're confusing me =/

@NathanMerrill wat iz dat

it measures your filesystem speed
sudo bonnie++ -d /tmp -s 8G -n 0 -m TEST -f -b -u your-user-name

8:34 PM
isnt tmp on ram and swap?

you don't have to, I'm just trying to ensure that my results are actually slow
every example I've seen of how to run it uses /tmp

itll probably say no space on tmpfs but whatever
> File size should be double RAM for good results, RAM is 7932M.
oh
> Writing intelligently...Can't write block.: No space left on device
as i said

run it from ~ then?

@flawr Heh, whoops. The choice of "a" or "an" actually depends on whether the first sound of the next word is a consonant or a vowel, respectively. For example, I would say "An SAT exam" instead of "A SAT exam" because I pronounce "SAT" as three letters - "ess ay tee". Likewise, for talking about the Lab color space, you can think of it as a single word, in which case "a Lab color" is correct, or as three letters (better written as L-a-b or similar), in which case "an Lab color" is correct.
@flawr URGH. WHAT did you do?!

8:39 PM
@El'endiaStarman I removed the L
@El'endiaStarman That makes sense, and I probably learned that at some point, and I think I vaguely still had that in mind. I intuitively wrote an Lab but then you reminded me of that rule=)
And I was really confused because I'd also say an RGB-image but that also starts with a consonant if you just look at the word=)

The complicating factor in the case of Lab is that it's not exactly an acronym, so the a and b are rightly written in lowercase. Which makes it look like a proper name, so you'd expect to pronounce it as one word, even though you could also rightfully pronounce it as three letters.
That's why I described it as "correct but aggravating grammar". :P

I recently had a similar thing when I had to actually talk in english, and I knew the words I wanted to use, but I noticed I have no idea how to pronounce them as I only knew them from books/other written stuff.

I would pronounce "Lab" as "Ell aye bee" for the same reason I pronounce "Dx/Dy" as "dee ecks dee why"

> Rewriting...
;_;

@flawr I have a similar problem too - I know words from reading that I have never heard, so I frequently mess up the pronunciation.

8:46 PM
You usually pronounce the letters in math

@Rainbolt Yes, but the Lab color space isn't strictly in mathematics, but rather color science.

@El'endiaStarman You know and that is the one thing I hate most in english, you can read tons of words but I have no idea how to pronounce them, or you hear words and you have no idea how to spell them. (I love french in that regard=)
> Yes, English can be weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though.
7

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei thank you :)

And you know, it doesn't even end there! Those guys thought it would be fun to make multiple versions of english.

@El'endiaStarman English pluralization follows a (somewhat) similar logic - it's sound based

@El'endiaStarman loool

8:52 PM
@DJMcMayhem For me, it was meme ... I always had pronounced it like "maim" (as in, to wound someone), but it's actually like "meam" (like "cream" but with an "m" in front)

@NathanMerrill but...your write time looks like half of mine

no, its double

@TimmyD oh that's nothing. You wanna know how I used to say it? "Meemee"

oh i looked at latency... its probably slow because im watching some poi :D

@flawr Also, reading through the Reddit thread that DJMcMayhem posted, one of the words was "rendezvous", and that reminded me how I can never get the pronunciation of French words right if I haven't heard them before. Multiple times.
