Hmm, actually, come to think of it, in my experience, French words are the prime offender in not being pronounced the way they're spelt. Spanish, Portuguese, and German, I can approximate them. French? Not a chance. :P

French pronunciation is much more consitent with regards to spelling than English. But it has a lot of rules to understand how to pronounce things

They take the last 4-5 letters and make them silent

Hai

9:02 PM
@El'endiaStarman Sure, different combinations of letters result in different sounds, but once you know all of them it is really easy to write down words that you heard but never read.

My mispronounced words were mostly from video games. From Baldur's Gate I got "melee" (mee-lee).

hello

And vice versa.

Or maybe that was smash brothers that taught me that word...

@Fatalize ^ i agree

9:03 PM
@Rainbolt I learned the right pronunciation because of Smash Bros Melee. :P

@El'endiaStarman I can approximate french well :P

I also said bosghetti as a toddler, kinda like the vampires in "What We Do in the Shadows"

For review - added a leader board to codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/90593/53748 - it is descending (since it's cops n' robbers style) and removes those answers with "cracked" in the header...
accepted :)

@DJMcMayhem I'm learning a lot=)

@DJMcMayhem I always thought it was ignore every other consonant

9:23 PM
Would compiling brainf*** to another language be consider an interesting challenge
Whoops
I mean vice versa
Compiling a language down to brainf***

been done I believe, but it largely depends on the language

Like write a compiler in any turing complete language subset (except brainf*** and deriviateives) which receives source of that same language to convert into valid bf code which performs identical.
@NathanMerrill i know there is a C to bf compiler
@NathanMerrill but some languages could be interesting to see. I don't know if it owuld be a good fit for this site

@El'endiaStarman though in French they are pronunciation rules compared to English where it's just... idk

I don't want to compile any language I want to write in

@Doorknob may I please point out the starboard and issues with a certain user. I didnt think the spam or offensive flags were warranted, but I just wanted to inform you of it.

9:26 PM
@Downgoat Well, English has them too. It's just that we (ahem) "borrowed" words from a bunch of languages, so the pronunciations come from those languages.

@NathanMerrill maybe the compiler does not necessarily have to be written in the language to be compiled down from?

I don't know what people will think of this so I'm just throwing it out there on the sandbox
0
A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Bald BanthaEsolang Interpreters Using a programming language from this version of this list, write an interpreter for the next language on the list. For example, an interpreter for LOLCODE would have to be written in LOLA. This is codegolf, so the lowest score in bytes wins.

@RohanJhunjhunwala then it largely depends on the language you choose to compile

@El'endiaStarman wat English has pronunciation rules? TIL

@NathanMerrill I wanted it to be a pop-con sort of challenge, but it seems that there isn't much love for pop-cons

9:28 PM
when you think "popularity-contest", think "human-judged"
if it requires human judgement for accuracy, its a good popcon
if its a challenge about making the most popular X, its off topic

So you would say that it does not seem to be a good fit?

not as a pop-con

Perhaps if I defined a language X to be compiled?

@RohanJhunjhunwala pop cons are fine but they result in under defined challenge
paticularially art contests

and make it a code-golf, sure. You just have to find a good language that isn't too hard or too easy to compile

9:30 PM
is there a meta on art contests?

@NathanMerrill it would be a language of this sort
<self-promotion>
https://github.com/rjhunjhunwala/S.I.L.O.S
</self-promotion type:shameless>

> type:shameless

I would probably modify some of the features

how to valid HTML?

Like randomness
@Downgoat cause <self-promotion> is a valid html tag?

9:31 PM
@RohanJhunjhunwala maybe. Realize that SILOS doesn't have a huge amount of people that understand it, so you'll need a great post to sell it
its not valid XML

@El'endiaStarman Thinking of it: The swiss french does have some difference to the french french, most germans probably won't understand most swiss german dialects and the official german in switzerland is different from the german german. Then the "italian speaking part" has dialects that even italians across the border do not understand.
(And then there is romash.)

the attribute goes on the opening tag like type="shameless"
:)

^^

@NathanMerrill I would strip it down in features. No randomness modified IO (i.e read a single byte value) etcetera etcetera. It wouldnt necessarily be exactly SILOS just some turing complete syntax with a minimal amount of features (while still being readable)

Too bad there is no swiss english.

9:34 PM
realize that parsing is a big enough task
those convenient "split" functions you were using to parse?

Yeah string parsing is nonexistent in most languages

that said, its not infeasible, and you may get a couple of participants

Because I would love to see a way to compile something readable into bf
But I need to still flesh out this concept

> 5,994 questions
i hope 6000th one will be nice

9:42 PM
I must have the 6000'th question
I'll theme it too

@DJMcMayhem There are actually a number of words there that I was corrected on. At least my excuse is that I'm deaf... :P

@NewSandboxedPosts I want to be the one that writes Marbelous in Manufactoria

deaf is another word: I just recently noticed it is not pronounced deef

10:25 PM
You mean with the double-e sound from been?

@Geobits or beef, right=)
Or weak

Been and beef don't really use the same sound though. Joke failed.

How are they pronounced over there?

Beef with the long e, like bean or seen. Been more like ben or bin, depending.

@Geobits neutralization of vowel in been to schwa?

10:35 PM
@Geobits Ah - we have "bin" as a regional accent, but I generally hear (and say) "been" as "bean"

The only time I hear been as bean is if someone is overexaggerating a terrible accent.

Q: Should we have additional room owners?

trichoplaxCurrently our main chatroom, The Nineteenth Byte, has only the 4 PPCG moderators as room owners. Since the chatiquette is not applicable to other Stack Exchange sites, using chat flags for breaches of chatiquette which are not also network-wide offenses is problematic - wasting the time of 10k us...

So I may have made an interesting mistake just now

@LeakyNun Hmm. I thought a schwa was more of an 'uh' sound.

@Syxer oh?

10:36 PM
@Geobits oh, so it's neutralization, but to the short /ɪ/ sound instead of completely to the schwa

@NewMetaPosts did you get up late today?

Yeah, pretty much. But also very commonly as you'd say Ben. Probably even more common than bin.

@ConorO'Brien Out of curiosity if I could find any secrets about FNAF (yes, I'm a nerd), I golismero'd www.scottgames.com.
There were 1905 subdomains found in the brute-force subdomain resolver.

My computer is screaming

10:38 PM
;_; to get into AP comp sci i need to know java

@Downgoat welcome to my life

@Syxer Have you tried moving the mike away from the speaker?

@Downgoat They don't teach it to you? :P

@Syxer what are they?

@DJMcMayhem I'm not posting that in chat lol

10:39 PM
Email it to me?

Q: Exploded view of a string

Luis MendoDon't you love those exploded-view diagrams in which a machine or object is taken apart into its smallest pieces? Let's do that to a string! The challenge Write a program or function that inputs a string containing only printable ASCII characters; dissects the string into groups of non-sp...

They're all legit - no randomly named ones or anything.

I'm in comp sci principles. it's beautiful. the teacher said we can use any language we want for the final project

Stuff like manage, investor, miami, ibmdb, etc.

@ConorO'Brien they do in the "intro to programming" classes but im trying to jump straight into AP comp sci
if i can't get in ill take comp sci principles

10:40 PM
@ConorO'Brien So naturally you're using the most terrible esolang you can find, right? Right??

@Downgoat ah

Lots of town names and such.
@Downgoat Do you know any OOP based languages?

@Geobits I would, but it's being sent to college board. the people grading wouldn't have any idea what it was :P

@Syxer JS? Cheddar? Swift?
> • Write, run, test, and debug solutions in the Java programming language, utilizing standard Java library classes and interfaces from the AP Java subset;

@Downgoat Sorta, probably not, and no.

10:40 PM
god so much java

You'll be fine.

:D

People with no programming experience went into APCS in my school and made a 5.

Yeah, I don't think Java is hard to learn at all if you already know other procedural or OOP languages.

As long as you don't do stupid, you're good

10:41 PM
@Syxer O_____O

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Do some golfing in Java, you'll learn it right quick.

@Geobits @Syxer is there any degree of functional programming in java?

@Geobits only reason i haven't learned java is it is so much overhead to programming

It looks like most of these subdomains are fakes, though.

i can't do just java <<< "System.out.println('goats')"

10:43 PM
@ConorO'Brien Kinda, in Java 8, but I doubt classes are doing that yet for the most part.

i need IDE apparently
if not i need a giant 10-step compile process

@ConorO'Brien Yes - strings are immutable, and all non-Object variables are immutable.

@ConorO'Brien afaik only functional part is the new lambdas
okay well brb learning java i guess

alrighty then

@Downgoat It's literally javac Thing.java. Unless you're counting each keystroke as a separate step...

10:44 PM
Some various other Objects are also immutable, but only if they set it up right.

@Downgoat Welcome to the dark side, Downgoat.

Hello guys!

@Geobits hai dark side

@Geobits if java is the dark side, what is the light side?

tea

10:45 PM
:/ idk if i should link SE profile to comp sci reccomendation email. SO contains a lots of me being smart but that also links to my PPCG profile

@Downgoat which shows your passion for programming. Do it.

@HelkaHomba ;_; y u call Conor pesky

@Downgoat that's not me, that's my cousin :P

10:49 PM
@ConorO'Brien oh ok

@HelkaHomba nice! Take that Conor!

@HelkaHomba holy carp congrats on (a) 129 subs and (b) comments!

@Downgoat If it his him he looks a lot purplier in person, I can attest
@ConorO'Brien Thanks :)

CMC: Given an input "n, x, y"

Print the lyrics to "n x of y on the wall", from n until the end.

The exact lyrics to be used are :

n x of y on the wall, n x of y.

Take one down, pass it around, n-1 x of y on the wall.

Until reaching:

No more x of y on the wall, no more x of y.

Go to the store and buy some more, n x of y on the wall!

Well, this is every bit as divisive as I expected...

Q: "99 Bottles of Beer"

GamrCorpsWrite a program that outputs the lyrics to 99 Bottles of Beer, in as few bytes as possible. Lyrics: 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer. @HelkaHomba That's not the same thing.

It's the same thing, plus basic substitution. Isn't it?

Oh, I see.

@Geobits Still different, and fun too.

And without pluralisation consideration(s)

10:53 PM
Yes.
No plurals.
Unless you want to.
But it's not in the rules as a requirement.

i;main(c,v)char**v;{i=atoi(v[1]);while(i>0)printf("%d %s of %s on the wall.\nTake one down, pass it around, %d %s of %s on the wall.",i+1,v[2],v[3],--i,v[2],v[3]);printf("No more %s of %s on the wall, no more %s of %s.\nGo to the store and buy some more, n x of y on the wall!",v[2],v[3],v[2],v[3]);}
should work

Link?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Thanks!
Heh.

@trichoplax Speaking for one of the high-rep non-mod chat-frequenting users who might be encouraged into such a position, I have no real interest in becoming a room owner and spending time moderating. But that's just me.

11:01 PM
works on my pc

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Weird. Are you sure?

ye screenshot coming

@HelkaHomba Nor me, hence the effort to find volunteers :)

@trichoplax Volunteer for what?
Sounds interesting.

See Meta

11:03 PM
@xnor Your turn

@trichoplax I both partly agree and disagree with your idea.
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Thanks!

Your view is the same as the community's then ;)
It's not really my idea though, I just took it from chat to meta

@trichoplax I see. I'll respond to you on meta.
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Is 300 bytes your best attempt? :D

@ColdGolf v3, totally fixed ™
i;main(c,v)char**v;{i=atoi(v[1]);while(i>0)printf("%d %s of %s on the wall.\nTake one down, pass it around, %d %s of %s on the wall.\n",i+1,v[2],v[3],--i,v[2],v[3]);printf("No more %s of %s on the wall, no more %s of %s.\nGo to the store and buy some more, %d %s of %s on the wall!\n",v[2],v[3],v[2],v[3],i,v[2],v[3]);}

11:07 PM
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Heh.

I see.

I'm one up vote away from mortarboarding today. :D

More bytes to fix it....
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Um, ideone.com/tCIlkg gives an error.

I always see mortarboarding as motorboating >_>

11:08 PM
@ColdGolf i think ideone doesnt have commandline arguments

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Oh. Do you have to count those in the number of bytes?

I challenge you all to out-golf my Python solution here:

@ColdGolf why ;_; its the input

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Oh, now I see.
I don't think it's a good fit for a main post, though. Do you?

I'm asking because I still think it's a fun question.

oml the web-knife is still parsing all these subdomains
what is this

11:11 PM
@Syxer What's a web-knife?
Does it kill pages?

@LeakyNun halp how to install

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei python.org/downloads

@LeakyNun oops wrong term. how to download your code

(ping, ping, ping)

11:12 PM
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei of course you can't, that's the point

You can't

you'll see my code after the deadline

@Syxer Its name sounds like a variant of LOIC/HOIC.

@ColdGolf lol

11:13 PM
@Syxer I mean, web-downloader or something would've been much better.

How does "rep" work on AG?

@DJMcMayhem is there rep?

@ColdGolf Ehh, it tries heartbleed and login-intrusion and such normally, but I disabled them.

I don't know

@Syxer Wait, so it's an active rather than passive scanner? Is that legal?

11:14 PM
@ColdGolf Yes

@LeakyNun 1) Oh cool, that's your problem! 2) Wow, you even outgolfed xnor!

@DJMcMayhem User ranking (still loading for me)

@Syxer You sure?

@El'endiaStarman thanks!

@ColdGolf The active part isn't, which I don't use.
The passive part is, which I use.
> but I disabled them.

11:15 PM
@Syxer I see, makes me wonder why they included the active part at all.

If it could scan only your own website, then maybe I'd agree.

@ColdGolf It's meant for pentesters. :P

Is is that in C you basically can use one for loop for a double loop?

I only turn on the active stuff when people ask me to. :)

@Syxer I see.
@Syxer Does penaddict.com count? It's a pen testing blog.

@ColdGolf Do you understand that (unless I'm quite mistaken) you are the main one causing the latest flag kerfuffle? So if you want to help solve the problem just stop doing stuff that makes mods say this.

11:18 PM
@HelkaHomba People are spamming flags on me. Blame the system.
And the quote you linked, it's when I was using a bot, having told everybody beforehand.

CMC: in least bytes possible describe programming puzzles & code golf and why its great

@ColdGolf -.- pentesting = Penetration testing: active system exploitation for security testing.

:31889513

@Syxer It was a joke....

0 bytes

11:19 PM
@Geobits wow ouch
oh wait
Because you golf everything
I get it

@Geobits ":31889513" isn't zero bytes.

4 hours ago, by trichoplax
@ColdGolf Although we don't yet impose a Turing test before chatting, it's strongly preferred that bots only talk in the bot testing room. Not doing so may cause problems for you as well as your bot

Yes, chat is stupid (or smart) and won't let you ping an empty message.

Now you know.

@Geobits Just put a quote block in it
@Geobits >

11:20 PM
@Geobits nbsp doesn't work then

nope I'm stupid

Doesn't work.

oh I have an idea

I'm sure ZWS would work, but I'm too lazy to find out for sure.

@Geobits
okay sorry for the ping spam. :)

11:21 PM
It doesn't work, @Syxer.

@ColdGolf I know
I already said that lad

@Downgoat Abusing code since 2010

@DJMcMayhem too late already send email
Hello @ArtOfCode!

11:22 PM
oml that worked too well

@Downgoat There's always a 0 byte solution to everything.
@Syxer What is "oml" anyways?

@ColdGolf Oh my life
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei :)

Yeah I usually use U+0009 BEL, that gives you an empty message

:31889621 wow okay geez

@ArtOfCode \a

11:23 PM
@ArtOfCode It does?

though people do tend to get annoyed if you keep posting, well, nothing

? isn't 0009 tab?

the overall ranking on anarchy golf isn't extremely meaningful because you can submit to trivial problems in a lot of languages to rack up points for nothing, but ofc teebee and clock deserve to be highly ranked, they are beasts

@ColdGolf yep. Paste a BEL char in chat and hit enter. Though for chat testing you can always go to the sandbox to avoid annoying people

11:24 PM
^^

@ArtOfCode I can't copy it.
Because of course, I can't see it.

Nope this didn't work

okay I'm stopping now

11:25 PM

@ArtOfCode hah beat you c:

I copied it, but I can't post anything with it.
test
It doesn't work when on its own.
                                                                                                                                                               However, it lets you make very interesting indented posts.
Also, I had no idea there's a unicode character for backspace (U+0008)
Does it actually do a backspace by one character, though?

@ColdGolf It is what is sent when you press the backspace

@LeakyNun Really? TIL.

Control characters.

11:30 PM
I know what it is.

it sent a backspace

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei I see.

@Downgoat melon pig frazzles dog campground <- because that's an anagram

That's an anagram of what?

11 mins ago, by Downgoat
@DJMcMayhem too late already send email

11:34 PM
@Downgoat huh

@Downgoat It's also an anagram of A Salamander Eyelid Tootle
No idea what what that means.

@LeakyNun ah, nice

@xnor Thanks

It's also an anagram of "A Dalmatian Doe El Lores Yet"
And "Datamedia Eternally Oleos"

@LeakyNun your turn :-)

11:40 PM
@xnor Wow.

@xnor His turn for what?

@Dennis Please pull Actually.

@ColdGolf Leaky Nun outgolfed xnor in Python, then xnor returned the favor.

@LeakyNun Ohh.

@LeakyNun Done.

11:42 PM
@LeakyNun This would be a very funny sentence to a non-programmer.

@Dennis Thank you
Now the 10000th prime is computed in no time.

Takes a while for the millionth prime, but eventually, it gets it.

@LeakyNun Err, don't tell me it was computed by trial division before... ._.

@El'endiaStarman That is true

@LeakyNun Whuuuut?
@LeakyNun Also, is the 10000000th prime really 10000000?

11:44 PM
@LeakyNun How does it compute now?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei sieve

@LeakyNun Well, I guess @Mego really does stick to his "premature optimization is the root of all evil" mantra...

@ColdGolf No, but the memory is full and the prime function returns its argument instead

@LeakyNun Ohh, so on a powerful system it would actually reach the end?

Yes

11:46 PM
Can the sieve be optimized with GPGPU?

@ColdGolf no, that divides by two. All primes above two itself are odd numbers.

@ArtOfCode Interesting...

Just some math
I'm sure you can manage division by two.
4

-___________________________________-

@LeakyNun That seems like odd behavior to me. Why wouldn't you throw an error?

11:52 PM
Actually doesn't do errors. It's part of its core philosophy.

@Dennis Ohhh right, I forgot about that.

CMC: Prove that there exists two positive irrational numbers x and y such that x^y is rational, in as few bytes as possible.

@ColdGolf has to be real?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Yes.

no e^i*pi=-1 then

11:55 PM
How can math be real if numbers are not real? </jadensmith>

@El'endiaStarman Okay, Are you a supporter of platonic idealism? </philosophy>

@ColdGolf No, I was paraphrasing a meme. Unless you didn't know that?

@El'endiaStarman I did, I just thought the meme was so overused.

@ColdGolf Man, what sites do you frequent?!

@El'endiaStarman I frequent a website with around hundreds of millions of monthly active visitors.
And on that website, the meme is old.
On SE, though, maybe it's new to some people.

11:59 PM
@ColdGolf 1) Whoop dee doo. 2) That tells me nothing about what the website is.

Yes.

then only the shitty parts of reddit still have that
i frequent reddit and don't do that

Wait, are you trying to say that SE embodies the shitty parts of reddit? I disagree.
