"The picture fell, but I nailed it!"
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ How is that one? ^

not as good as the plain "Nailed it!"

hmm, unfortunately it is too short =/
"Nailed it, but is it going to hold?"?

"It's Hammer Time!"
How's that? ^

Haha=)
I think we've had that before=)
better something with "string"
"No strings attached!"
^ I think this one suits the challenge best

yeah, I think so too

5:06 PM
Likewise.

Great, submitted=)
Let the golfing begin.

Thanks for the advice!

started another game of Factorio: going for the achievement where you hand-craft as few items as possible :P

5:12 PM
it took forever to get to the blue constructor
but I'm starting to get things moving

Q: No strings attached!

flawrIntro There are 3 nails in the wall. You've got a piece of string that is fixed to the picture frame with both ends. To hang the picture, you entangled the string with the nails. But before letting the picture go: Can you predict whether the image is going to fall, just by looking at how the str...

Wouldn't it be worth to expand the tag description of a little bit, and include e.g. our definition of truthy and falsey. (also setting that as the default output)

yeah, I think so

Do we need a meta post for that?

idk, I'm not the best at meta posts

5:24 PM
@flawr I don't think so

@NathanMerrill Even when defining the truthy/falsey as default output?

I can't think of a way to present a decision-problem without saying "output true or false"
and if the default simply expands "true" to "truthy", I think that that is so inconsequential
in essence, I think setting it as a default is so inconsequential that I probably wouldn't even include it, but it isn't an issue if it was because its inconsequential

Q: Output a pretty box

PavelYour challenge is to exactly output the following box: .................................................. .................................................. .. .. .. .. .. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++...

@NewMainPosts A wild Minkolang answer appeared!

@El'endiaStarman Saw and upvoted=)

5:40 PM
Minkolang sounds like a pokemon
like, maybe it evolves into a Lickitung or something

Guys I need help I just realized I don't know how to properly define 'builtin compression algorithm'

Ah shoot, it's invalid. Probably due to one of the little golfs I discovered while writing up the answer.

its not "builtin" that's hard to define, its "compression"

IK
halp

@Pavel Why don't you just omit that ban, it is not necessary.

5:43 PM
Ok, fair enough.

I feel like an advanced turtle-graphic golflang would do rather good here

@NathanMerrill There is such a language (Charcoal), but I don't know how it works

V would probably do well

the "surround" bulitin that someone used seems like it would be useful in other cases too
I've found myself wishing for it in Prolog for a very different reason (that of handling edge cases in 2D problems)

@ais523 I mostly use it for formatting things to look table-like
@ais523 what reasons would they be?

5:56 PM
so for example, one question we had was about noughts-and-crosses
the most natural way to find identical symbols that are lined up is to concatenate the rows of the grid, then look for arithmetic progressions
but that also finds lines that "wrap around" the grid unless you put a bunch of padding around it
noughts-and-crosses is sufficiently small (3×3) that you can get enough padding using Windows newlines, but that doesn't work on similar larger problems

@flawr That was pretty cool. The signing on the right was definitely better; more crisp and more idiomatic.

I've actually had that problem in a golf - that builtin would have been extremely useful then, had I written Pyke

6:18 PM
Numberphile did a video on sandpiles!
The pictures at the end are jaw-dropping.
I want to see this animation made into 3D. (From this gallery.)

That's freaky

6:50 PM
@orlp I just watched A Link to the Past, Ducktales and the mystery game tournament. All very entertaining. :)

Developer Survey: Which fictional programmer am I most inspired by? Answer: Neo, The Matrix

I wonder what the due process for changing a Community Ad is. I'd like to update the TIO ad with something a bit more similar to the new landing page, but I'm not sure if that should be an edit to the old ad, a new ad replacing the old one, a new ad in addition to the old one (probably not), or something else.
The language list is also severely outdated.

@Dennis you could ask on mother meta

7:13 PM
(Not so) Fun fact: out of 161 sites on stack exchange, we had the tenth highest closure rate of 2016: 43.42%

That's only the tenth highest?
Hooooly

Q: 2016: a year in closing

Shog9A moderator asked me for data on the percentage of questions closed across all sites. This doesn't strike me as information that needs to be restricted to moderators, so for your idle enjoyment I present: Questions asked, closed and reopened for all sites in 2016 Site Name ...

I guess that a natural consequence of disguising PPCG as a Q&A site.

Interestingly enough, Christianity was second at 75.52%. something @El'endiaStarman might be interested in

Yowza.

7:18 PM
what's #1?

Ugh, it's not even sorted

Well, sorted by what?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Anime, 92.23%

It's apparently sorted by site ID

7:19 PM
Well for all intents and purposes, it's unsorted

@BusinessCat yeah, I used vim to sort them by percentage. It's easy to sort it by whatever I want in vim
Fantastic tool really

92.23% ?!
On Anime/Manga

that's a lot

From where I'm standing, nothing is easy in vim. :P

@BusinessCat ninja'ed
@DJMcMayhem how?

7:21 PM
:sort! /\v.{65}/

woah vim has sort command TIL

Sorts every line in reverse ignoring the first 65 characters of each line

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah, it's crazy powerful too. You can use regex to determine what to sort

@DJMcMayhem what are you testing in the formatting sandbox?
*were you maybe
I see it on meta.se recently active

7:25 PM
Oh, uh something weird with edits

Uh, kinda hard to explain. I'll show you my Meta post in a few minutes

the meta post takes a minute to load

the formatting sandbox? of course it does, it's massive

7:28 PM
so much "junk"

Fwiw I was testing the non-buggy behavior to verify that the buggy behavior is wrong

Except that now it isn't working, haha

Q: Keep my comment when I load a new edit

DJMcMayhemI was just in the "First posts" review queue, and as I was writing a longish comment on one of the posts, I saw the An edit has been made to this post. Click here to reload bar at the top. Since I wanted to see if my comment was still accurate/relevant, I clicked on it. Unfortunately, this...

7:35 PM
That reminds me: I've been wanting to complain about the This post has been deleted. thingie for quite some time.

@DJMcMayhem ah, I see

@DJMcMayhem i don't always correctly anticipate how i will be perceived. but i think also that people on this site could be more critical of their perceptions

@Dennis I get it for when you don't have enough rep to view deleted posts, but yeah it's a nuisance when you know it won't change much by refreshing

It's more than that. When I delete an answer, I post a comment after deleting it because that way it will show up in the recipient's inbox.

@Dennis Wait, it won't if you do it the other way round?

7:40 PM
Briefly. Only until the post is deleted.

@DJMcMayhem That's higher than I would've expected, but it makes a lot of sense. We're a very popular destination for people who put zero effort into figuring out the site.

That's what I've been told anyway.
brb abusing my sock

@El'endiaStarman with "Truthy questions"?
(I know a tad about C.SE)

@Dennis D: #sockrightsmatter
@Dennis mods can comment on deleted posts?

Why not? They could also undelete the post, comment on it, then re-delete it.

7:42 PM
true

Socks are humans too... or are they? >_>

@MartinEnder Hm, deleted 5 minutes ago and it's still showing. I'll wait until the rep is subtracted, then I'll click the notification to see if it actually shows something.
Either was bad intel or I'm misremembering things.

@KritixiLithos socks, by definition Are not humans.

7:58 PM
@MartinEnder sorry, I was busy at my grandpa's funeral

@orlp my condolences :(

@DJMcMayhem Yeah, mostly. We get a lot of people thinking that we're like all the other Christianity-focused forums out there.

@El'endiaStarman didn't we have a challenge about these things at some point?

@flawr We did; it focused solely on the state of an infinite-grid sandpile after n grains dropped in the center.

@El'endiaStarman ah right.
oh I even answered it...

8:10 PM
@El'endiaStarman what are the differences between Christianity.SE and other places?

@muddyfish Primarily that we have a strict Q&A format and that any group that calls themselves "Christian" is Christian for the purpose of the site.
The first reason is common to SE sites and the differences between them and typical forums. :P

What would other places be like then?
I'm not sure what other use a forum would have

I dunno; I don't go to those other places.

apart from possibly a social area

@StewieGriffin How was your pizza?

8:39 PM
Native speakers: how do you pronounce schedule?

Skeh-jool

sked-jool
@muddyfish mostly a specific sect of christianity
or s/sect of christianity/set of beliefs/

I cringe when people pronounce it "sheh-jool"

ye
skeh vs sked is more of an accent thing than anything else I think

@betseg ske-duel

8:43 PM
It's understandable depending where you're from
Sch is pronounced like sh in German iirc

Yes. I learn German as the second foreign language.

ske-Joule
Like the unit

@flawr Very nice :)
Realized my submission was wrong though :(
I have a new one now, 82 bytes...
The sad thing is: I think it's very well golfed, but I stop at 82 :/

@StewieGriffin with or without pineapple?

8:51 PM
Without :(

Good

Pineapples are heresy

Pineapple on pizza is divine.

Pineapple are reserved for Hawaiian pizzas...

pineapple is a disgrace to the word apple

Anonymous
8:54 PM
People who eat pineapple on pizza are not to be trusted

@StewieGriffin why is that sad

i agree except for the part where it has to be on pizza

@Mego TIL don't trust flawr

@MistahFiggins do you prefer apple on pizza?? O_O

Anonymous
I like pineapple by itself. I can respect food that tries to eat me back. But pineapple on pizza is blasphemy.

8:56 PM
^

In Norwegian, pineapple is called Ananas... Norwegians that aren't fluent in English tend to ask for "an anus", when asking for pineapples abroad...

@Mego Let's ask christianity.SE to judge that XD

> tries to eat me back
what kind of messed up pineapple do you have

I like pineapple. I have it nearly every day

@flawr umm... no, definitely not...

8:57 PM
@StewieGriffin It's called ananas in the whole civilized world!

@StewieGriffin can confirm many norwegians around here

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ it's extremely acidic

@muddyfish I'm good with the flovar of pineapple, but its the texture that gets me

@flawr And everyone asks for anuses?

8:57 PM
I know that, just didn't think that's what he was referring to

I also like it on pizza as long as it's not dry

@StewieGriffin well, so do some hispanics but yeah pretty much

@muddyfish You mean like a pizza-soup?

it's less norwegians more mexicans, I live in so cal

Anonymous
@muddyfish That's not why. Pineapple contains enzymes that try to break down the inside of your mouth while you eat it.

8:58 PM
.... wat

@Mego that as well

@Mego I mean it is nothing but fair.

@muddyfish That's not a turn off for me. (I may or may not eat lemons raw at times)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ did you ever put a slice of pineapple on your tongue? Don't do that for long. It feels strange as the pineapple eats you.

The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries, also called pineapples, and the most economically significant plant in the Bromeliaceae family. Pineapples may be cultivated from a crown cutting of the fruit, possibly flowering in 5-10 months and fruiting in the following six months. Pineapples do not ripen significantly after harvest. Pineapples can be consumed fresh, cooked, juiced, or preserved. They are found in a wide array of cuisines. In addition to consumption, the pineapple leaves are used to produce the textile fiber piña in...

I am mildly allergic to pineapple so I avoid it

@flawr no

it causes awful hives

Wtf, we do we eat these

@flawr mmm pizza soup is good
