12:00 AM
@Downgoat I thought goatism was what I'm going to be accused of when I kick the next person who mentions goats...

@Lynn This guy even made other stuff. Why is handrawn stuff so much easier to understand?????

@HelkaHomba In the interest of fairness I feel I should kick you, but that's really interesting... :P

@HelkaHomba Goats can climb 90 degree inclines, trees are nothing

antigravity goat

12:05 AM
@trichoplax I understand the constant "gaot gaot ha" being a reason for a kick but seriously...

@flawr I'm also trying to piece together monads. I mostly just know what they do on the built-in types in cases that come up in golfing. I had found the tutorial you linked enlightening, and also this one.

'night

Let's kick the next person who does a pun chain... Oh wait, we know why we wouldn't do that

@Downgoat I wasn't being entirely serious, but I wasn't being entirely unserious either. I don't really see a problem with mentioning goats, but if it descends into messages made up mostly of the word "goat" with no context or content, then I will start kicking.

12:09 AM
@xnor Thank you very much! I'm gonna read it later, it is way too late now for me:)
Haskell is such a divine language, it is just amazing...

@Downgoat Actually, I don't know why we wouldn't kick for a pun chain. Certainly a pun chain from a single person.
@Downgoat It was mainly a light hearted message to head off any further "Goat. Goat goat?" messages. If I have a serious warning to give it won't include any humour.

any ascii art lang like charcoal gonna do this challenge?

Q: Output a pretty box

PavelYour challenge is to exactly output the following box: .................................................. .................................................. .. .. .. .. .. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++...

@EasterlyIrk The second definition seems to suggest it's noise:
> Goatism is when you make annoying sounds.

yeah, literal noise

12:27 AM
@DestructibleWatermelon it's surprisingly terrible in V

This guy gets it

Something that bothers me about CG is that pure constant-output construction programs are longer than ones where you pass in the dimensions
I mean it's just because of how p takes input but still

@DJMcMayhem I have an ascii art lang too, but it isn't much like charcoal, and might not perform to well at a challenge like this

@DestructibleWatermelon Yeah, I know. Toituld

turtled

That's what I said

@DestructibleWatermelon what? Yes I do, they're both 2 syllables

that's not how you say it?

No. I thought it was Tur-tuld, or if you say it fast Tur-duld

@DJMcMayhem Turtlèd
the accent means you pronounce it
thats like saying poke-mon

1:18 AM
Well TIL
I never know what the accents mean

@DestructibleWatermelon So you're saying it's like "turt-LED"?

turtle ed
almost

Oh, that's much more helpful.

@DestructibleWatermelon I dunno, it sounds like they're plotting a coup.

Oh come on... I realize there was a meta about challenges nobody knows can be solved, but drawing impossible objects? That's ridiculous!

3:25 AM
hey...
how about impossible colours being displayed

oooh nice idea

Or outright reddish green?

IDK
TBH not great because reddish green can only be seen by some people

What should the message be for hitting the wall with a shot?
I was thinking something like, "Take THAT, wall!", or, "That walls gonna regret messing with you!" or something
maybe just "Great shot!"

"Looks like you can hit the side of a barn!"

@El'endiaStarman can't see reddish green
hmmmm, if I want this to work better I might have to rewrite to make stabbing work differently to shooting so it can give messages
or maybe the only messages from shooting are hitting walls, and getting kills, and getting blocks
so, if you don't get a message from stabbing, you missed

Hello
Is anyone on?

3:57 AM
yup
@Qwerp-Derp hi

@DestructibleWatermelon Do you have Processing?

nope
don't really plan on it either

I really wish SE would notify me about meta upvotes
(or downvotes)

@Mego Are you awake?

4:40 AM
@El'endiaStarman I'm becoming increasingly of the opinion that reddish green is not a color. Rather, that some people are better than others at distinguishing different wavelengths
if reddish green was a color, then we could produce it in a single pixel

@NathanMerrill I'm with DestructibleWatermelon; not sure if it's a color or not anyway. However, I completely disagree with your logic.

@NathanMerrill I think it can also be explained by differences in screen resolution.

The issue about Reddish Green and similar Martian colors has little to do with wavelengths of light, and more to do with mechanics of perception. Indeed, wavelengths are removed at least a few degrees from color perception.

@NathanMerrill The color pink fails this test.
Uh...was there some prior discussion on weird colors that I missed?

right, and pink isn't really a color either

4:45 AM
Just a brief tongue in cheek exchange roughly based on drawing impossible objects... a couple dozen posts in history nearly covers it

the thing is, is if you were to take all of the wavelengths from violet to red, you wouldn't find pink there
maybe I'm a "purist" to what a color is, but if it isn't a pure wavelength, it isn't a color :P

I think that's not quite a useful definition of color. We already have a perfectly good word for that... wavelength.

maybe, but it makes things a lot simpler when you consider things like reddish green

To me it sounds more like a category error

Heyo

4:49 AM
you would put reddish green in the same category as red?
they are totally different to me

Wait what reddish green?

I would put red in a different category than 10.7 GHz

@Dennis i'd like to request a mod notice on the 2014 question as per this

@xnor If you mean an actual post notice, we can only select from a few default options. That leaves editing the text into the question body.

@Dennis oh, I didn't realize that
should i edit that in myself then?

4:56 AM
Go ahead. I can do it if you think it will look "more official", but as long as you link to the community consensus in the edit reason, it should be fine.

5:44 AM
@NathanMerrill nope, reddish green results specifically from different signals in each eye

Windows Updates has got to be the worst malware I've ever encountered >_<

Anonymous
It managed to brick my computer

I'm gonna go on a limb here and say that that's because you tried to do something to your computer you weren't supposed to.

Anonymous
Nope. I ran Windows Updates, and then Windows didn't boot at all

Anonymous
Luckily I had a Win10 installation USB laying around

I feel like I'm the only one for whom Windows has never borked
It just works

Anonymous
7:02 AM
It usually just works for me

Anonymous
But updates since I switched to Win10 have been a constant game of Russian Roulette

Updates take little time and happen when I'm sleeping, never cause me to lose anything.
Startup is only seconds slower than unlocking my computer

when a design in besiege would work but the grabbers don't work

And I'm using the fast-track insider preview edition

Anonymous
My working theory (which is corroborated by what I've read of others' experiences) is that updating from the original preview version of Win10 to the regular version causes issues with updates

7:03 AM
@Mego A computer my brother uses is in an infinite loop of windows update, brick, reset, use computer, repeat

Anonymous
Since I just reinstalled from a USB drive, hopefully the issues will stop

well, not brick

@Mego Future Win 10 upgrade are incremental, no more 5GB full system upgrades. Fast ring already has it.

I've had Windows 10 since day one tho. Am I really that lucky?

Anonymous
@mınxomaτ Oh man I can't wait

7:04 AM
but it doesn't boot, it gives some options and the computer has to be reset
as one of the options

Oh yeah, the upgrades work great.
Except they killed MS Paint

reset not really

But other than that, it's great

but more a resume to an earlier state

Anonymous
I'm not on fast ring because... Well I actually don't know. I remember trying to get on fast ring, but I think updates broke then, too.

7:05 AM

The reset feature is pretty neat. But I wish it had a snapshot like feature.

@KritixiLithos I made a cool thing in Processing

What is it?

7:06 AM
I made Button and Progress Bar classes

Hmm. Probably gremlins.

With a custom function

My dad works at Microsoft, so we always get all the betas as early as possible.

That's nice

Anonymous
Oh see there's the explanation. Microsoft employees have magical gremlin-repelling auras.

7:07 AM
Everything except office Visio

I also once made a button class

Awesome program, does not want to be installed.

What does final do
In Java
Also what does static do

It declares a constant

Static means the variable isn't tied to an object

7:10 AM
I'm not entirely sure, but I think static functions and variables and etc are loaded first or something like that

So, if I have static int a in class G, I can reference it as G.a instead of new G().a
This also means that if you modify a static variable for one object of a class, it changes for all objects of that class.

In regular Java, it's public static void main because the JRE doesn't actually instantiate an object of the class with the main method
In addition, static methods cannot contain references to nonstatic fields and methods directly. If method foo is in class bar, and a is a nonstatic variable, we cannot write a function static int bla(){return a}, because since a is nonstatic, it requires an object.
Does that make sense?

Oh
Yeah it makes sense

@Mego Hm, now that I think about it, Windows Update has fubar'd computers under my care on mor occasions and more thoroughly than "traditional" malware.

7:35 AM
@Dennis well, you can just not click on links to not get traditional malware...
now windows updates you get forced to have them
even if it doesn't mess up the computer, thats a good amount of time where you can't use the computer
people in my class have been unable to work a couple times because of windows updates...

@DestructibleWatermelon They fixed that

Orrite I think I have a good game idea for Trees
The goal is to reach a certain amount of money through one tree and one piece of dirt (land)
Like maybe $1bn?

Nah, there are people worth $1bn. You need to become the richest man in history

$1 trillion?

;)

It's really interactive, you have to do basically everything
You have to hire workers, buy stuff, sell stuff, trade, mine, chop, and eventually automate everything
That's my idea of Trees at least

@Pavel still though

8:11 AM
No it's good now.

Thats still 5 minutes of no work

5 minutes once a week is fine

it'd be better if you could say "no I'm doing classwork now windows"

You can delay the update for upto a week
And if you leave it running over night, it will restart overnight

or "no windows the update actually just ruins the computer and makes me have to reset"

8:12 AM
There's a system in place that detects if it will cause you to lose work

obviously not
because...
guess how you have to get the new stuff

you lost work?

no
this is someone elses nonwork computer

It won't restart if you have an unsaved word doc open, for example.

but its kind of annoying to have to sit around waiting for the computer to finish updating, then reset the computer and wait for that
(again, when i say "reset" it kind of means reload an earlier state)

8:15 AM
This isn't Win 8, either, where it just forces a restart on you out of nowhere. You can delay updates for (*quickly checks*) 35 days, and schedule a good time for it to happen.

Anonymous
Or modify a registry key and make updates never install unless you tell them to

You can do that.
But why would you do that?
Updates are good for you.

Anonymous
Because Windows 10 is very very bad at predicting when I'm not going to be using my computer

Anonymous
Also downloading 5 GB updates while I'm in the middle of gaming is not fun

Switch to fast ring preview builds

Anonymous
8:19 AM
It didn't let me do that previously because unknown error

Anonymous
It might let me do that now though

Also, you can change it in the settings to only restart at three in the morning.

Anonymous
That's an hour from now

Or whenever

Anonymous
3 AM is a common time for me to be using my computer :P

8:20 AM
You can check the windows blog to see all the features
One of the ones that they have is that bash can run windows applications now.

To be more explicit and emphatic, remarks on the quietness or deadness of chat ("Is chat dead/ded?", "Oh no, I killed chat.", "Hello, anyone here?", etc) are noise, in large part because the answer is always the same ("no", "no, you didn't", and "yes" for the examples). They contribute nothing to chat. Henceforth, I will start kicking people who persist in posting such messages.

If you ask if chat is dead, there are two possibilities: you have to ask/talk about something, or you have nothing to say. In the first case you just ask directly, in the second case you don't say anything

Oh no, my question was accidentally relevant to the earlier conversation

3:00 PM
@LegionMammal978 Your effort to find and exploit a technical loophole is not appreciated.

@El'endiaStarman No, seriously, in an unrelated event, I was looking at the Wikipedia page for 4′33″ and started wondering about that

@LegionMammal978 You could almost certainly find it on YouTube (or iTunes/other music distribution services, for that matter).

@El'endiaStarman what is wrong with a Hello if it doesn't interrupt anything D:

@El'endiaStarman Sure, 4′33″ can easily found, but I was asking about the later One³ (i.e., a recording of the entrance hall)

@Downgoat Uh, I was not talking about "hello" as a greeting.
@LegionMammal978 Oh, I didn't know about that one.

3:04 PM
@Downgoat My most common "Hello" message is "Hmm"

> Hello, anyone here?
That is not a greeting?

@Downgoat The "hello" is unnecessary there.
2 messages moved to Trash

@El'endiaStarman ok, so general "hello" though is still OK, if it's not call for attention/noise?

@Downgoat I personally believe so, yes. It's part of human social interaction, though I've noticed that many people here (including me) no longer express greetings or farewells in this chat.

Argh wrapping is too hard to do

3:07 PM
Walking into a room full of people and asking "anyone here?" isn't, though.
