@EasterlyIrk I thought your username stood for 'Riker, Will' for so long

@MarsUltor It stands for Riker Astley.

9:17 AM
I think I have a Haskell solution of my Josephus challenge. The question is should I post yet another answer to it :P

@Sherlock9 Yes

That will bring it up to 6 answers from me out of 10 total

allright
I'm thinking that this will be my new challenge:

Buddhabrot?

yes

9:31 AM
Just to generate an image of it?

yep
but it'll be a fastest-code challenge

1. Ouch
2. You should use different zoom levels for speed checking

@MarsUltor ?

9:52 AM
@orlp You pretty much need to calculate every point in the fractal for any magnification - higher zoom = higher resulution = slower

@MarsUltor correct
but for this challenge you need to generate the entire image

@orlp The thing is, high resolution images will be large, and so they may be hard to check for correctness
And the fastest may be too fast for an accurate measurement with a normal-sized image

@MarsUltor there won't be a correctness check
since it's based on a random process you can't anyway
(without getting unreasonable)
you must in some way show that the code properly renders a buddhabrot with the parameters that I will give

Q: 3Sum like algorithm

kaan yılmaz a+b+c+d+e = e+d+f+g+h = h+g+k+b+a each variable [a..k] is between [1-9] and each variable has to get unique number. every number between 1-9 has to be used. all posibilites have to be found. preffered language is C.

@Maltysen Boom.

@Maltysen Looks poorly written but I wouldn't say it's unclear... unless there's something I'm missing?

^

11:57 AM
@Sp3000 it was just edited to make it better. Before, I had no clue what you had to do

Also, I think we already have a challenge that output all permutation of number 1..n, would be close to be a duplicate

I see

still unclear. output format? are rotations unique? reflections? is there a time limit? "preferred language is C" suggests it's a SO-type question

I'm thinking that static implies const in my new language

@NathanMerrill What about static methods?

12:04 PM
do methods ever change?
const simply means that they can't be modified

@NathanMerrill Depends
If you're going for a dynamic language, maybe

well, they don't in my language

isn't the point of static variables to have a state attached to the class?
like for example counting the number of instances of a class

@Maltysen yep, such a thing is not possible with static variables
nor do I want that to be a thing
because constructors are functional
what's you're goal for the language?

Add one extra space of indentation to make a block into a closure
:)

12:10 PM
@QPaysTaxes then do what ever works :)

Your question reminds me: @Mego How do we do nested blocks?

@QPaysTaxes At least, it ain't Shakespeare

@Sherlock9 or you could use an AST and just start a new child node whenever you encounter the start of a block :P

@Mego In Seriously. Missed a key word there
Man, I'll have to figure out how to write an AST soon

@Sherlock9 AST parser?
If you want one of those, use Pytek/Cheddar/flex+bison/yacc
@QPaysTaxes Pretty much just token and type

12:25 PM
@MarsUltor Yeah, one of those

as in + operator or 1 number
@QPaysTaxes Yes
Cheddar has the code and index as well, but only for parsing purposes (see output)
Yeah, well mostly for parsing purposes
I don't think it's used for errors ATM

12:44 PM
?
for what?
huh, ruby
why use c++?
as in any value?
wait
unknown type?
templates won't work?
also, help. anyone here good at JS?

@QPaysTaxes not knowing the type at compile time is no excuse for not knowing the type at runtime
@MarsUltor what's your problem?

Hum... i've been productive lately... Don't have work for the next couple of hours...

@NathanMerrill Debugging

Guess It's time for some codegolf

@NathanMerrill more specifically, my code is adding a circular reference and I'm not sure when

12:50 PM
that's still not specific enough
but with the lack of knowledge, I blame caching

how is it not specific?

its clear, but what kind of help are you imagining I could give?
I can't really say "It's on line 46"
what are you trying to do, what are you currently doing?

wait a sec
ide.c9.io/somebody1234/rennet rennet.js, function starting from line 493, download and open repl.html in /public to test

what are you trying to do, and what are you currently doing?

Grammar parser. Right now, the grammar parser is buggy with the syntax for multiple operators in a row, and it's adding circular references that shouldn't be there

1:09 PM
@MarsUltor well it asks me to sign in
so yeah no

1:26 PM
someone should really create a [beginner] tag for easier challenges

@MichelfrancisBustillos A beginner tag would suggest that this challenge is only for beginner
Also, where do you stop the beginner level?
Technically, everything is beginner level if you don't have to use heavy math

Not necessarily...it could/would suggest that it is an easier/less time consuming challenge for those who are either just starting programming or just starting golfing
all IMHO of course

(I agree with the principle eh, I think it would be nice, but the difficult is hard to quantify)

Q: Stable Game of Life

poi830Challenge: Given a matrix (or 2d array) of 0s and 1s, output the number of steps it takes for Conway's game of life to reach a stable state, or -1 if it never reaches one. A stable state is a state in which no cells are turned on or off each step. The game must run in the given matrix, with t...

Beginner or not?
Nothing hard, just takes some times, but basically basic array manipulation

Beginner
I'd say...stuff you could do after a Programming 101 or (language) 101 class

@MichelfrancisBustillos Sadly, it is still vaguely subjective :/

1:31 PM
True I suppose... I guess I

Technically, you would know everything you need, because harder challenge aren't related to being harder to code
It's the algorythm that gets harder to come with

'm more looking for a way to find challenges to give to beginners as practice and to tackle when I don't have much time but want to hone my skills

And each type of algorythm is more or less hard depending on your passive and your mindset
I think the only thing that could go is reading some random challenges, and whenever one please you, just do it ^^

Yep, back to what I've been doing hahaha

Also, if you want to progress, just take some longer challenge when you have time, It will helps a lot

1:40 PM
@MichelfrancisBustillos If there's something specific you want practice in, you could always try asking in chat for suggestions? Maybe

I suppose...except I'm not really sure what...or when. I usually end up golfing/programming at 1am when there's not much else to do or when I'm waiting for a batch job. Its really just something fun to do while waiting

1:54 PM
This was suggested and rejected early on:

Q: Tags regarding difficulty

Crazy EddieI think that we should tag puzzles (or whatever) with an estimated difficulty tag. That way people who want a real challenge can find it and those who are just starting out can find ones they might be more able to solve. For example consider: Distance between hands on clock vs: Shortest path i...

Some challenges are straightforward tasks but difficult to golf.
Some tasks are easy for some people but difficult for others
Different people have different areas of expertise and would order difficulty differently
Some challenges are easy but takes days, others are very difficult but don't take long if you have the brilliance to tackle them

If you're looking for "easy" or "doesn't take long", look for golfs with tons of answers. It's not a sure thing, but it's a pretty good heuristic ;)

^

Umm, what did you do to your poor avatar???

I was thinking that, but it's also the ones most likely to have been answered in your favourite language :P

beginner is a meta tag—that link has other relevant information

1:59 PM
Hello, golfers

Hello~ o/

@Sp3000 Agreed, it might be really hard to win those, but it would be good practice if nothing else. Plus, "good" answers in the language of choice probably already exist to compare/contrast to.

@Geobits converted it to rgb triples and encrypted it
it seemed like a good idea at the time

It looks more like you smashed it with a hammer until the raw pixels fell out.

2:01 PM
Gliders bleed green?

If there's already an answer, just go for it, you will be able to check where you lost bytes, what he did better/worst than you. It will help you honing your skills even more

@quartata Nah, the glider itself is black. I figure all that white space around it probably broke down into its rgb components when smashed.

I have a little question about the creation of a challenge : is restriction to a type of language a turn-off for golfing (e.g. Graphical languages)?

@Askirkela We generally dislike language restriction

I guess so, but I wanted to be sure

2:04 PM
If there's actually a compelling reason to restrict it, there's usually not a problem. But if it's "I only want answers in these languages" for no apparent reason, then yes.

But if you want to see some graphical language answer, why not simply say "I'd be interested to see answers in Language X", it sometimes works :)

^

@Geobits Well, I confess I would like to see more golfing in Piet ._.

Or offer a bounty for the best X-language answer, etc (once you have sufficient rep).

@Askirkela I think we all do, they are gorgeous ! :)

Q: Should language-specific code golf challenges be explicitly disallowed?

Alex A.In light of a recent code golf challenge in which the specification restricts participation to JavaScript, I think it's time we revisited making a hard rule about language-specific golfs. We may discourage such challenges, but ultimately they aren't off topic. Consider Sklivvz's comment: Eith...

@TimmyD I read that one :)
Still, I prefer to ask it in my terms
Ok, so I'll think about a challenge that can be golfed in graphical languages as well as in "classic" languages

@Askirkela If you mean a challenge that requires graphical output, there are text based graphics file formats that will allow any language that can output text to compete

I was thinking of a text-output for a graphical code.
But on second thought, it IS too restricted

If you want to see more Piet golfing, the best way would just be to start golfing in it yourself :P

2:11 PM
Yup, but I'm not yet competent in this :D

Well half the reason why people don't golf much in Piet is because getting a working solution is one thing, but golfing down the layout and making sure the colours don't collide is a whole other problem (and usually the part that takes the most time)

I'm used to java, so it's a bit different...

@Geobits oic

Yeah, but then again, getting a wrking solution can take quite some time in the first place :)

You could totally post a small bounty on an interesting and not too difficult challenge saying "this goes to best solution in piet"
I think you only need 75 rep to post a bounty?

2:15 PM
I have 24 rep, that's a bit low ;p

LOL look at this meta post and watch the votecount: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/277369/…

@Askirkela A decent challenge will fix that :D

But a bounty sure is a way to motivate people

awh man it stopped
It was just going nuts

@Geobits
Still have to think of one decent challenge

2:17 PM
Sure, that's the hard part :P
You can always answer a question or two until then to get some rep.

I'll try to do that (hopefully in Piet), but a lot of challenges are way too hard for my piet/golfing knowledge
Plus, I don't have a lot of time

Sure you do. Just abandon all your other responsibilities and you'll find you have plenty of time for golfing.

"Quit your job, quit your family! Golfing is love, golfing is life!" :)
Right?

Pretty much.

Abandon all your work, you who enter here

2:21 PM
Our chat room description used to be pretty much that.

I should have discover golfing in my university years

@Geobits I know, but don't remember the exact phrasing :/

@quartata It's gone up 40 since you said that :o

@Geobits it was going up and down and in circles
@Katenkyo abandon all work ye who enter here

@Katenkyo Argh, I thought Askirkela said that. Your avatars are very similar :P

2:23 PM
@Katenkyo abandon all work, ye who enter here

@quartata dislike the new avatar....
I like the glider better.

@Geobits I should change my avatar to be yours rotated 120 degrees.

@Geobits I sometimes look at his messages and think when did I wrote that...... before realising it isn't me

@MarsUltor no.
>.<

@TimmyD You wouldn't be the first to troll-copy my avatar, but I think 120 degrees would be new ;)

2:24 PM
@EasterlyIrk but this is the glider

@Sp3000 @quartata close enough :p

@zyabin101 We all got the ping :p

@quartata also, if you want to help with a new roguelike (pre-alpha test), sorta like nethack, signup for the pre-alpha is here.

@zyabin101 That's IE's job to remind people of someting they already know :D

@quartata Famous last words.

@EasterlyIrk When do you make a public release?

@Geobits did and people got relly mad when i eat it
idk why
they were fine until i told them it used to be my hand
@zyabin101 Not mine, but I helped with the tech test.

3:23 PM
@Askirkela Here's a pretty helpful file: github.com/Adriandmen/05AB1E/blob/master/Info.txt

Thanks @mbomb007

The implementation of .E on lines 2649 - 2658 of the compiler scares me. What if there is already a file with that name?

3:39 PM
lol
but you're right
Some malicious person could replace the file

brb, I have to go rename a bunch of files

@mbomb007 It says approximately Islamic Green. The link at the words "Islamic Green" goes to #009900
Haskell question: I'm trying to the Josephus function with three inputs recursively now. With the following code, I get the error Pattern match(es) are overlapped
jos_rec n k q = f q (mod (k-1) q) where
    f n r = r+1
    f i r = f (i+1) (mod (r+k) i)
Related: what is the standard indentation width in Haskell?

3:57 PM
@Sherlock9 One space, one tab, and another space.

That seems somewhat complex

Better than 1.6 tabs.
