Q: Ask Ubuntu vs Ubuntu Forum

FrankLAre they (Ask Ubuntu and Ubuntu Forum) both belongs to Ubuntu.org? Any guideline to put what type of questions on AskUbuntu or on UbuntuForum?

There, answered.

oh, I think google needs this, it seems not to be taking requests form the scope " You must send an HTTP referer header that accurately identifies your application."

google likes you to auth your app. yahoo generally doesn't mind unauthenticated applications as much.

in other news david made a generator = code.launchpad.net/~davidc3/+junk/scope-gen-prototype there is a file "test.ini" that you just fill in the url, and some of the info and bam scope

well, seems like you guys are going to push this one through. i'll stay in my happy place playing with docker. maybe i can fill a void with the python api and replicating anaconda.
i know i want edge pandas and matplotlib without having to pay the just use arch or compile from source and fight dependency hell thing.
@Mateo good luck though

12:48 AM
so, not sure how to get google's thing going on it, that is how I found out it wasn't my coding at this point, since the generator works with the delicious api, and not the one I'm trying to use

wait, what's failing specifically...

It's not really clear "closed unexpectedly. Either the process crashed or was killed forcefully."

well, narrow it down i guess.

delicious is kind of neat, but you can only search users and tags
so not terribly useful as a scope
maybe if you had links you bookmarked yourself with it, that might work

1:19 AM
I think I'll work on that one, since I know it can work

How goes the scope contest?
I finally managed to get Qt Creator to publish apps to my Ubuntu Touch emulator.
It turned out to be an architecture mismatch.
If anyone wants to give the 2buntu app a spin, I'd love to hear what they think.
I switched to using WebView for the articles, resulting in much better rendering.
(Though, oddly, the ability to instantiate a WebView requires a special permission.)

2:27 AM
@NathanOsman not so good, i'm stuck on phrasing json
@NathanOsman looks cool
I'll have to try it on my phone

What is the difference between mainline, stable and longterm versions of Linux kernel?

2 hours later…
7:24 AM
It isn't until I've just finished writing a bunch of CSS rules by hand that I truly appreciate a CSS preprocessor like LESS.

8:03 AM
I like CSS in a completely inappropriate way, but I work on simple things. So, I can understand how you wouldn't like it.

8:14 AM
I better get to bed. Last night was late.
It's 3:16 AM. I guess caffeine works better than I thought.

Heh. Have a better one. I'm up for the duration now I think. One day weekends don't let me recharge properly given my can't sleep more than 5 hours at a time problem and crashing.

5 hours later…
1:30 PM
so, I think I narrowed down the problem with my scope to the part that does the json

Q: How to print total number of file descriptors with index 24

pkenobi23How can I print the total number of file descriptors with index 24 for all the running processes? I tried $ ls /proc/*/fd 2> errors.txt > stdout.txt | grep "^24" stdout.txt | wc -l This solution returns 0 every time. I mention that my task asks me to write a one liner in order to solve it.

stunpixWhen my system starts and receiver with tv are disabled during boot, then system will not see them even if later I will replug hdmi cable. To make receiver/tv visible to the system, I must leave them enabled and do reboot, then everything will be working. I have checked udev logs while I was rep...

can one of the AU mods smack this user around? askubuntu.com/questions/552911/…
they're trying to pass off "Use an EOL release" as an acceptable answer
and are on the verge of turning a discussion into an hellish argument.
(or at least, can someone back me up)

@ThomasW. I put in some votes on that
I might understand him, an extremely tiny bit, if he had said 10.04. but 11.10? that was one of most unstable i've used.

mhm
i skipped 11.10 xD
went right to 12.04 from 10.04 xD
i stick to the LTSes, power-user backport when necessary

for a while there I was going version to version from 9.04-12.10 on my mini pc with xubuntu
finally killed it by recompiling the kernel, went down in a blaze of glory, I think they had sse turned off for a reason.

Q: Mismatch of IP Address in our linux machines?

user2809564I have few Ubuntu machines in which I have our app servers running which is trying to connect to another set of RHEL machines in which I have our Cassandra cluster running. Now as I said, my app servers are trying to connect to cassandra cluster and now I am seeing very wierd issue with it. I am...

@NathanOsman I like it, needs padding(marigins) on the articles

5:55 PM
@mutu I was quicker than you >:) for once :+)

@NathanOsman that would make a great scope ;)
can 2buntu output json?

@Mateo really? 11.10 was the most stable I've ever used..

regardless, the 11.10 repos are most likely offline
so even those 9 months or whatnot of security fixes it got are now LOST FOREVER TO THE MISTS OF TIME
(which is annoying)
PS: enjoy the bash bugs ~

6:13 PM
@Seth huh, yeah. maybe it was just my box...

@Seth is that pre-Unity nostalgia? :P

strange that everyone ends up liking the release before LTS...

@Mateo I think 11.10 was the last version of Ubuntu with gnome 2.

I thought it was the one where they just switched, or was it just an option at that time

@Mateo not me :=) I tend to like the latest release every time. Now 14.10 is my favourite :=)

6:16 PM
:) 14.10 on my laptop, 14.04 on the desktop

@badp Unity was the default from 11.04 ;P
(it did come with gnome2 as an option until 12.04 tho')

I sit corrected

also, this is the like best answer ever:

A: What does 'TL;DR' mean and how is it used?

A EIt means "if you couldn't be bothered to read the preceding material because it looked too long (and possibly boring), here is a summary for you". The meaning is quite close to 'executive summary'. tl;dr is used to call out another user on the length of their post. However, in cases of more c...

Glad I wasn't drinking anything when I saw this:

@Seth so you're over 21 now?
time goes too fast...

@Mateo yup, 2buntu has a JSON API.

6:28 PM
woha, cool.I'd like to see if it works in the scope-gen-prototype

@Mateo I didn't mean to imply anything alcoholic..

...though that documentation isn't up to date.

@Seth ah, ok. I get it now.

Pretty much all I drink is water ;)
Never could get into coffee..
@Mateo Has anyone made an SE scope yet?

Iced tea for me.

6:32 PM
well, if i get the rss one working you can pretty much then make one out of any rss
and since like every se page has a rss...
@Seth I'm not sure any one was working on that, I know someone said they wanted a ask ubuntu one
@NathanOsman can you give an example

well I think it would be a good idea. I wonder if SE has a network search..

2buntu has an RSS feed too, so... :)

ooh, they do.

2buntu.com/api/1.2/articles should display twenty recent articles.

@NathanOsman ah, sweet
I'll wave the magic wand and see what happens
;)

6:36 PM
:)

sweet:

nice!

its one of the ones that works \o/
it's been hit or miss, but I think seeing what is working might help me solve the problem on the rss one

6:58 PM
getting there:

7:15 PM
@NathanOsman might need your help figuring out how to pipe the email hash into gravatar, but a little bit of work and you can have a 2buntu scope :)

7:36 PM
http://gravatar.com/avatar/ [hash] ?s= [size]

> https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/<hash>.jpeg
they also have json

7:57 PM
Whoa... I didn't realize they had that.

so, you could even code and "about me" section for those that have it

8:09 PM
could be really cool, say for the rss one, it could grab the logo of the site for the one icon

A: Is it possible to have a different background for each workspace?

fossfreedomUbuntu 13.04, 13.10 and 14.04 How to Launch dconf-editor (install dconf-tools if required) Navigate to org - gnome - desktop - background Now the very strange bit - by default the show-desktop-icons is unticked. Click it to tick it and click it again to untick it. Now install some extr...

And the second part of the post says, that I can add the wallpaper plugin via the dconf editor
but I can find an option to create a new directory under the plugins one in dconf-editor
neither do I see any schema so I can set that via the terminal :(

@AwalGarg He's actually saying enable the wallpaper plugin in Compiz Config Settings Manager :)
> Launch the Dash and search for ccsm

Filter to wallpaper - enable the wallpaper plugin and add New wallpaper as shown.
You'll need to install CCSM (Compiz Config): sudo apt-get install compiz-config-settings-manager

yeah, but after that:
> If you prefer not to risk ccsm then you can use dconf-editor as installed above.
Am I missing something here?

oh hm.

he had you install it in the first step
so first "Launch dconf-editor (install dconf-tools Install dconf-tools if required)"
then do the "show-desktop-icons"

Done all of that already..

8:35 PM
then either do the ccsm or the dconf steps after that

But I can't "add" those new schemas from the dconf-editor.

then I would try ccsm

@AwalGarg You need to add "wallpaper" and maybe "imgjpeg" to org -> compiz -> unity

I am scared of ccsm, it once broke my 12.04 installation :(

8:37 PM
no guts no glory

@Seth I did that, but the next step to it is what troubles me. He has a folder called "wallpaper" in there with some keys, but I don't have any :/
I think I have to create those, but I can't understand how :/
(sorry I am still learning all these things, so maybe I am saying n00bish things, forgive me for that pls :P)

@Seth that step should create the wallpaper category ritght?

yes
@AwalGarg Got a screenie of yours?

sure hold on

(with the wallpaper bit)

8:45 PM
@Seth ^

hm, let me try.

ok

hmm, doesn't work for me either and I can't even find the option in CCSM.. I am running 14.10 though.
In a bit I'll try on a 14.04 VM.

ok
btw, in general, does dconf editor allow one to add new catefories?

@fossfreedom Hey, any chance you know what's going on here? Your directions for setting individual workspace wallpapers doesn't seem to work anymore :/
@AwalGarg No, not that I am aware of.

8:53 PM
ok
oh wow, you pinged the original answerer!
btw @Seth I was able to solve my touchpad problem yesterday, but it broke my usb mouse drivers, so I reverted that. It is really a itchy bug, even in the dell laptops authorized by ubuntu...

yeah.. Sadly certified hardware is still susceptible to bugs.

@NathanOsman I'm noticing a pattern, all the ones that are working begin with a "[" all the ones that I haven't had luck with have extra stuff at the beginning - like {"entry":[ so I think I need a way to filter that out, hopefully another scope used a source like that and I can find out how to process for that

o.O JSON objects

yeah... it's been intresting

@AwalGarg hmm, I can't find the setting in 14.04 CCSM either. I guess we'll have to wait and see what fossfreedom says.

9:04 PM
@Seth ok
Is it really bad to use ccsm anyways?
(Or using dconf to do the same...)

sometimes it can definitely mess things up, yes.

it's just sometimes you can delete or unchecked something important without an easy way out

But for this particular action I believe CCSM is just adjusting the dconf values for you, so no real difference.

hmm, I read this, which makes sense to me actually.
for some reason, ccsm gives me the impression that it is one of those bloatware, which is why I avoid it... but I am a lil biased on that because of my previous interaction with the software.

a bit on the extreme side, but yeah - I have broke unity a few times of it
It makes a few things I like to do really easy, like minimize on click, and a transparent title bar

9:11 PM
sidenote: i posted a comment on that post so that any other user experiencing the same problem can have a confirmation maybe.

@AwalGarg sounds good

:)

9:42 PM
@Seth just tested. still works in my 14.04 virtual machine
@AwalGarg - did you install the compiz-plugins package?

@fossfreedom no. I am following the dconf-editor method.

yep - still you need to install the compiz-plugins package

ok, lemme try again. Thanks :)
btw @fossfreedom is there any potential harm to the stability of the system with doing that thing?

potential harm? - you may get a X crash when you first click the workspaces icon - it just happened to me again. After that all seems to work ok - including after a reboot.

sounds a bit scary... gonna try anyway ;p

9:55 PM
@fossfreedom Ah, missed that part. My bad!
Thank you!

@fossfreedom can't find that category even after installing the package. Should I restart the system?

@AwalGarg which category?

@fossfreedom "wallpaper" under "plugins"

@Mateo It will be nice if the ccsm feature exposure gets built in to wayland and/or mir. I'ld rather see it in Wayland though.

I see it @AwalGarg
It's under "utility"

10:00 PM
@AwalGarg screenshot please - upload it here

here it is
installation of the compiz plugin on the left, and the dconf editor on the right

oh, dconf still.

hmm - I wonder if its one of those schema relocation problems...

@TheX!

Hey gang
I turned my Ubuntu box on for the first time in about a year...

10:03 PM
@AwalGarg can you just run ccsm and see if you can filter for "wallpaper"

@TheX such a coooool!!! username that is! :D :D
@fossfreedom umm, sure

But now I can't do any updates because apt-get is convinced that my computer is not connected to the interwebz
even though obviously I am...

@AwalGarg What does dconf read /org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/active-plugins say?
@TheX o_O

['core', 'composite', 'opengl', 'imgpng', 'resize', 'compiztoolbox', 'move', 'grid', 'wall', 'place', 'snap', 'mousepoll', 'unitymtgrabhandles', 'copytex', 'vpswitch', 'regex', 'commands', 'session', 'animation', 'fade', 'expo', 'workarounds', 'ezoom', 'scale', 'unityshell']
@Seth ^

I don't see 'wallpaper' ;)
Add it.

10:05 PM
@fossfreedom Yeah, I can see that in there.

Note: This could be symptomatic of installing a DE on top of another Ubuntu variant. Ex: on Xubuntu after adding compiz-plugins - I don't have most of that tree in dconf.

@hbdgaf Well no, xfce doesn't use compiz iirc.
(by default anyway)

@Seth I thought we had to add that in the unity key... lemme try.

@Seth It doesn't by default, but if I add it - the tree doesn't get added magically. So, the keys get added from non-compiz packages. Sort of what I was driving at. If you installed unity on say gnome remix, you might not have all the same keys in place.

@AwalGarg I just had you read the Unity key :)
@hbdgaf ah. quite possible, good point.

10:10 PM
@AwalGarg you are using 14.04?

@fossfreedom yeah

new install?

yeah
Adding those keys didn't help
but adding it via compiz did

ok - let me download a fresh iso - will take a couple of minutes

ok
note that I am not using 14.04.1... maybe that is the issue?
(I will upgrade next week)

10:13 PM
this is what it looks like on my system:
/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/active-plugins
  ['core', 'composite', 'opengl', 'place', 'mousepoll', 'copytex', 'imgpng', 'vpswitch', 'resize', 'snap', 'session', 'regex', 'wallpaper', 'commands', 'unitymtgrabhandles', 'compiztoolbox', 'grid', 'move', 'wall', 'animation', 'expo', 'ezoom', 'workarounds', 'fade', 'scale', 'unityshell']
when the wallpapers plugin is enabled.

@Seth 14.04 or 14.10?

@fossfreedom 14.10, although I can get it on 14.04 as well if it would be helpful.

active-plugins must be a new key - in 14.04 its "unity" not "active-plugins"
ok - downloaded. I'll spin it up - will be back...

how do I fix it?

@TheX depends on the exact error you're getting.

10:17 PM
yay!

@hbdgaf thanks buddy

@Seth just a second let me reproduce it :=D

wait, wrong screenshot.

@fossfreedom on 14.04 with the plugin enabled --^
(sorry couldn't copy it directly, VB isn't being too nice to me right now)
@TheX can you run it from the terminal please? sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. thanks.

10:20 PM
@Seth one moment please

Yup :)
The penguin thing lives on.

Sorry my 4 year old just tried to leave the building

oh np :)

10:24 PM
unity crashed
had to reboot :/
now I have no wallpapers at all :(

@Seth and on and on and on and on...

@AwalGarg NOOOO!

My mad #keyboard skills. Oh wait, not that kind of keyboard. http://t.co/cwxAOlmLf9
^I love that one

@Seth thank a million.

@TheX no prob. It might be easier to just reinstall 14.04 from scratch, if you continue this way you will have to go from 13.04 to 13.10 to 14.04 which will take some time. Either way should work in the end though :)

I don
I don't know I am still getting a lot of errors, this way.. It might implode after all... lol

guys

10:29 PM
hm, new errors?
Did they go down any @TheX?

is anyone a tech genious? lol

Not sure yet...
trying the dist-upgrade right now...

guys

@Ludz.broo I know a penguin..

HALLO

10:30 PM
@Ludz.broo depends on the tech

@TheX lol
i need help with LWJGL

@Ludz.broo I am guessing it is a bad sign if I am going to ask what is LWJGL?

heh

they have a nice website

Its light weight java library
or whatever

10:32 PM
Yeah I just googled it...

Funny fact, they ask the same :P

I am trying to run Minecraft on my arm unity chromebook

Sorry never heard of it, so answer is no, I am not the tech genius you are looking for.

Its ok

@Seth @fossfreedom Thanks for the time guys! I really appreciate that... I think I would try that later again after upgrading to ubuntu 14.04.1. I have uninstalled ccsm and the plugins, gave a restart, and everything is normal now.

10:34 PM
@AwalGarg no worries ... I'll continue looking at this anyway. I'll ping you anyway depending upon what i find out.

@fossfreedom that would be great! Thanks :)
btw, how do you guys get to know all these things?/where can I learn them?
I don't know of any manuals that describe the entries in dconf etc...

@AwalGarg hang around the site for a couple of months ... you'll soon become an expert :)

@fossfreedom hehe sure :D

@NathanOsman good article

and LWJGL genious's?

10:39 PM
cya later guys! gnight :)

wrong chat room I guess :/
@AwalGarg bye!

night @AwalGarg

recommend any chat rooms? xD
the room goes silent

 TRPG General Chat

Main chat room for tabletop role-playing games. Anyone can ask...

thx

10:41 PM
why did you recommend the RPG folks @Lucio?
I don't think role playing has much to do with Java and game libraries, although I could be entirely wrong.

inactive chat
nothings

maybe he thought LARP, or WFRP or something

11:05 PM
anyone know if it's possible to give pkexec a timeout, similar to sudo's?
It gets rather annoying to have to enter your password for every single command.

This is the best I could find:
And that's the point I am trying to make. It used to be that we would use gksudo (or something similar), it would maintain a session (or a timeout), during which you didn't have to enter password again, just like sudo. AFAIK, pkexec does not support such a timeout, or session. So the program used for authentication matters in this context. — muru Jul 8 at 5:09
Oh wait.

A: How to configure pkexec?

Radu RădeanuHow to configure pkexec to avoid getting errors when run GUI applications? I found two possible ways: As you can see, using the following: pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY gedit will not get you any error. And this is normal because man pkexec is very clear in this matter:...

that looks really helpful, thanks @NathanOsman!

So it sounds like you need to create a file in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions for the command.
But that's easily done.

man, if pkexec wasn't meant to run gui applications, it keeps making me wonder why they removed gksu.

11:21 PM
It can, it just won't by default.

I think they want everyone to build it into their own app
where it shows the app icon and everything

If your app needs root, it needs to ask policy-kit. It's policy. -- The people who write policy.
There is a certain amount of logic in that though.

11:57 PM
@terdon - you got your bounty ;)

@AwalGarg have updated the answer. As I thought, compiz using relocatable schemas is causing those keys to be hidden. Best for now to use ccsm (I'm sorry to say :( ).
