But, we were all noobs once :)

I like his link, italic,bold comment
It's like "Hello World" of comments

Yeah :)
Okay, so @Serg can you explain to me why so many people changed their profile pics to solid colors?

his packet is an entire hard drive... wat.

ikr

@AndroidDev Lol, I probably should write a meta post about it . . . Really there's no deep reason, other than it started with me - I suggested as a joke that I should copy Jacob Vlijm and change my icon to solid color. Then I posted a straw poll and people voted for solid blue, so I did that. Several hours later, Nathan , Zachare, and couple others also changed their picture, just for the heck of it and for fun.

9:35 PM
Ah

hey, random question.
what's the usual width-height ratio for a single terminal character?

@ThomasWard @NathanOsman would the explanation for solid colors be worthy of a meta post ?
Probably not

I'm trying to make a perfect square in the terminal, which is not going well.

@KazWolfe ugh . . depends on the font probably ?

A monospaced font, also called a fixed-pitch, fixed-width, or non-proportional font, is a font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space. This contrasts with variable-width fonts, where the letters and spacings have different widths. For example, the two high-use letters "I" and "E" do not need the same footprint. Both letters differ in center-to-next-letter edge (and center-to-center) spacing distance needs (margins) in variable width fonts. The variable that changes is offset from what would otherwise be monospaced centering. In a modern proportional font, every...

Q: Standard Terminal Font Aspect Ratio

DevinMWhat is the aspect ratio of a mono font that's made for terminal use, or more specifically, the size of the cell that any single character would fill? I've read that a standard terminal is 80x24 columns by rows, and that the standard terminal screen is 4:3. So, considering that information: ...

@terdon I actually laughed out loud at that! :D

boned, so boned i am

LG what are.you doing
High Brightness Mode turns on outside on cloudy days, but not in direct sunlight
@Serg what'd you do

9:54 PM
@Zacharee1 nothing . . .that's the whole point . . . I was just having a frustration moment over my electromagnetic fields class, because i am so behind there, and we have exam next week
also , behind in pretty much everything else.
Term paper for east-asian history is due on april 27th i think . . . and I'm behind in Verilog, I'm still barely finishing the lab 3, when people are finishing lab 4 already

10:07 PM
Wheeeeee, my code actually seems to be compiling properly, no errors. Hopefully I've defined all expressions properly, because I've no board and no way to test this except via simulation

You know you're bored when your current work page is covered in connected cubes.

@KazWolfe or with doges

i'm not good enough to doodle doges

oh, you mean those doges

@ThomasWard can we please move this to main site ? meta.askubuntu.com/q/16856/295286
@Zacharee1 I've misread it as NoFoodException has occured and was trying to understand what Marqueen was for the last 5 minutes

Q: Replace windows 10 by ubunto

heni abidaI need to replace windows 10 with ubunto (Not a dual boot ! )and I would not lose D: partition , (windows is installed on C: partition) how to do that ?

*exasperated sigh*

10:23 PM
no

Welcome to the site. First of all, it is spelled UBUNTU ,not ubunto. Please adhere to proper spelling rules, which will save you much frustration searching online for information. — Serg 24 secs ago
I really wanted to add " . . .and save whole lot of aggravation to the regular users"

hue

@Serg um, context?
@Serg No because he is question blocked, so best I can do is close as offtopic
which is done

@ThomasWard bunch of people have been asking me why all of a sudden users changed their avatars to solid colors, so i was just thinking maybe instead of repeating myself every time, there should be a post
wait

\o/ @ThomasWard is here! :D

10:36 PM
@ThomasWard should we vote to reopen that meta post and then move ?
@KazWolfe here's a ping for you for no reason at all, just because i like you so much

yey
i feel important :D

serg is loopy and doesn't wanna go to the 5:30 pm lecture . . . can i plz just go sleep?

you can
you're in college. you don't need to attend classes
i really need to vote more... this is the second time i've run out of votes in my AU career.

I probably would skip the class, but we have exam next week . . . it might potentially be useful to attend this one . . . although i highly doubt it

@ThomasWard You still here?

10:50 PM
@KazWolfe what do you need to vote on?

@Zanna posts

@KazWolfe Up or down?

either
specifically questions though

Yes, I mean... I was offering to vote on your behalf
Anyway, bedtime

@Zanna Do you have a sec before you go?

10:52 PM
A sec already passed :p Ask for a whole minute

Yes of course @AndroidDev
What can I do? :)

@Zanna Ok, so I wanted to talk about the situation with this question: askubuntu.com/questions/896529/…
I am not trying to purposefully be obtuse about it,
but my question has twice the views and more votes. So I wanted to propose that we move the answers from that question over to mine.
That way we get the best of both
because I do agree that the other one has good answers as well

Oooh I didn't even realise it was your question
Right... well thinking about a merge, I have to agree yours is the better question

@Zanna I could even un-accept the answer that I accepted, since the user that submitted it isn't even registered anyway
But it just seems that my question is more popular for whatever reason

I was going to say @ByteCommander would lose his accept
So should have a say in it
But if you would change your accept that would not be an issue

10:59 PM
I would be willing to change the accept if @ByteCommander would want me to
(I was going to write my own answer and accept it when Nvidia gets around to fixing the issue anyway)

I think his answer is a lot better, personally
Oh right

Like I said, I am perfectly willing to change the accept.
@Zanna Yes?

I think your idea makes sense, if they are merged, better make yours the survivor

(if i may, i also asked a question about exactly this)

And we keep getting more and more. Here's one from an hour ago: askubuntu.com/questions/898265/…
@KazWolfe Link please

Q: Why is my system getting these white bars around windows?

Kaz WolfeI'm running NVIDIA Optimus on a laptop (960M with Intel graphics), but my system occasionally will display like this: This seems to happen most often after a relatively long sleep, but can usually be resolved with something like unity --reload or similar. This issue has been known to appear on...

From Feb 2
(closed as a bug for some reason -- well, because it is)

@KazWolfe Hmmmmm.... Understand, the entire reason I am being persistent here is because my question has 1k+ views

What do you want me to do @AndroidDev?

Really, views shouldn't matter. We should strive to create the best possible question we can create, with the best possible answers.

Battery dying faster than my brain
I kinda think views matter quite a lot

Not after a merge, really.

11:04 PM
@Zanna Well, I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page before asking a mod to merge them

Sure

Views are an important factor, yes, but really we should focus on bringing as much concrete and useful information all into one place.
I'd even go so far as to say make a CW question + throw all the answers into that.

No need for that surely

If it generates a high-quality question with high-quality and relevant answers, there's nothing wrong with it either.

Why would it?

11:07 PM
So I was just thinking that if all three of us agree on what to do, the mods will be more willing than if just approached by one user

Argh too late to argue

Sooooo..... consensus time?

CWs tend to allow the community as a whole to shape and mold the answer to a degree of freedom not really present with regular questions. Plus, then we get rid of the whole "it's my question" thing.

I think someone already flagged it for the other direction
@KazWolfe that whole editing thing is not an issue since suggested edits were invented

@Zanna Second point is more important imo.

11:09 PM
There is an article by Jeff somewhere about how CW is not much use

I (personally) am a fan of having widespread canonical questions (especially those frequently asked) being owned by the community instead of a single person.

I should edit my meta answer which I changed my mind about
Somewhat

@KazWolfe - Also, why did you remove some info from my Q? That was kinda important that it was basically a fresh install.

@AndroidDev Not really.

Anyway this isn't going to be a canonical post, it's a bug! It will hopefully be transitory

11:10 PM
@Zanna But for now, it is a canonical post, as seen by someone asking this question every hour

Look what I found: ebay.com/itm/112334911283
Remember yesterday when we were talking about switching USB devices on and off externally?

Meh. I am for not trying to make a new question. Fix the existing posts. Google likes views & votes

@KazWolfe @Zanna So do we need to continue this another time?
@Zanna Which is the reason I'm being persistent.

Then, find the best existing question and make that the merge target.
Here's 2278 views: askubuntu.com/questions/883648/… (if views are so important. Also asked before any of the questions it's dupe-targeting.)

@AndroidDev if you flag it you can say I agree with you, or i can flag it too, but i'm too sleepy to write a special flag
@KazWolfe yes exactly, but views and votes also make a question good, in the eyes of search engines, I believe. And @AndroidDev is here. He can edit his question to be the best possible

11:16 PM
And we both have 20k.
We can edit whatever we want.
(It should still be a CW)

We can always merge a merged question if it comes to that...

Henry of the 2300 views question is a regular member, albeit not in chat.

That question is very nice

So here's what I would do, had I mod powers. Make the highest-viewed question community-wiki, and merge in the major other questions. Then, dupe everything over to our new masterpost.

@KazWolfe congrats!
I see no benefit to CW at all

11:18 PM
+1 --^

Then, we can worry about surgically removing bits and pieces from all the merged questions to make a single awesome post that covers pretty much everybody's use case, and is the best question we can write, with the broadest possible terminology in order to generate unique hits on Google.
Benefit is nobody owns it, and it's the community's to maintain.

@AndroidDev If you want a Q&A merged with yours just flag it for the mods to look at. Although Seth has personally done it when in the room the last time I broached the subject he just said flag it and which mod is first will deal with it.

@KazWolfe Although that one doesn't have such good answers...

@AndroidDev That's what merging does.

11:20 PM
It moves answers.

@KazWolfe Yeah, but the accepted answer...

CW.

ugh

Geees

@KazWolfe everyone can maintain it anyway

11:20 PM
what happened to my study habits?

There won't be an accepted answer to this until such time as NVIDIA releases a bugfix.
All that we can do is offer workarounds and patches until such time as a solution is reached by NVIDIA.
@Zanna Maintaining an owned question has a different set of rules. In short, as you're aware, you need to keep with OP's intentions and OP's original question. You can't splice your own information or your own further examples into it, really. Well, you can, but it'll get rejected or reverted pretty fast.

(In reality, muru and a couple of other people pretty much maintain everything, but whatevs)
Ugh I am going to sleep

(for example, if you saw an edit adding "this also affects driver 123.45", you'd reject it as an attempt to reply, right? Same thing. CW posts allow more flexibility inasmuch as the scope can be changed far more freely)

But if it is @AndroidDev's question, for example, he can accept those edits

Either way, Henry's question is the oldest, has the most views, and likely has the best SEO out of any of the merge candidates. So, we should merge into that one.

11:26 PM
I think it's better if people are checking edits anyway, we don't want it to end up a mess...

@Zanna But that relies on @AndroidDev wanting to expand the scope of the question. If he's not around/busy/whatever, those edits will get rejected.

@Zanna @KazWolfe - OK, look, here's what I propose:
1) Do the merge I am suggesting
2) We can do a second merge later if need be

3) hue

@AndroidDev Why merge into yours?
It doesn't have the most views.

go by votes, remember?

11:28 PM
Not if it has a note saying "please suggest an edit to add your sytem details in the following format" or whatever

@Zanna That's pretty much a pseudo-CW at that point.

or is it a sudo-CW? o_O

Yeah & so what?

Just make it the real thing.

@Zanna @KazWolfe - Look, I GTG. You can keep arguing if you want. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

11:29 PM
There's no harm in letting 100+ rep users edit.

CW was invented before it was possible for low Rep users to suggest edits
@KazWolfe famous last words haha
They CAN edit

@Zanna There's about as much harm in letting 2000+ rep users edit freely.

rip

It just gets checked
Disagree
But too sleepy

So there, have my proposal: Merge into Henry's question (around second longest, most views, high SEO), and make it CW.

11:32 PM
o/ all.

We can drop the second if people have very strong (and valid) objections beyond "I don't like CW", but we should push the right question (which, as @Zanna and @AndroidDev have made painfully clear is the one with the most views)

@RobotHumans o/

anyone up for a linus joke?
Since we're shaking things up in US politics, I say next election cycle we go Linus for president. That whole not a US citizen thing is not a problem. I mean the birth certificate problem has been solved before, and we finally got a non-politician elected once.

so, cc @Seth, see above please.
We value your feedback as a community leader. :)

Can I get a starting point?

11:40 PM
I agree with @Zacharee1 also - votes are at least as important as views

47 mins ago, by Android Dev
@Zanna Ok, so I wanted to talk about the situation with this question: http://askubuntu.com/questions/896529/colored-borders-around-windows-after-updat‌e

Thx

there. the tldr is deciding on a merge candidate to propose to mods.
@Zanna That can be considered an unfair metric. Up until recently, these questions flew more-or-less under the radar.
Nobody cared. Now that there's suddenly a whole lot more attention, the questions that were at the forefront when it happened (namely, Ivan's/Android Dev's) got a massive vote boost for being at the right place at the right time.
Views are organic, and represent exactly how many people have seen the question. As we know, most people don't vote very much.

Votes and views kind of come together.
Can't have votes without views..

But, you can have views without votes.

11:44 PM
Sure

Especially for older questions left aside as "irrelevant" because they weren't asked at the right time (and weren't discovered as a target for dupes).

That's not really relevant to this situation, I don't think.

point is, if we're going for SEO, we should go with the question that has the most views in my opinion.

Personally, I like votes as the target to dupe towards if you merge or delete the answers, so it magically redirects and the higher view one redirects to the more "useful" voted one.

@AndroidDev I was away
what's up?

11:46 PM
@ThomasWard Start here.

@KazWolfe really the only metric. Occasionally how good the question is comes into play too, but that's it.

my brain hurts from beating my head against an emergency python script rewrite, I'll let @Seth make decisions on this one
(I'm more likely to just hurl everything into the void with this near-migraine)

haha. beating head against emergency script rewrite

@Seth Well, age would be a factor too, but that's sorta paired with views so...

@KazWolfe age usually isn't that important.

11:50 PM
@RobotHumans when your workplace says "Figure out why everything's broken" and you have to rewrite the entire structure of a production-critical script just to be able to find errors and properly handle and log things, AND convert all Python str type strings into Unicode strings just to PROVE that it works... yeah, well.. blah.

But yeah, sometimes we consider that.

So, with that, I'll hand it off to the mods.

@ThomasWard On my first day I just fixed 3 things that made unit tests fail and have to be run with human intervention one at a time every time there's a migration from dev to staging and staging to live. And on staging to live, nobody goes home until all the tests work
today

@KazWolfe where was that rage room ? I need to yell

@RobotHumans heh. You were probably on site though. I had to do it all via VPN.
and two machines - one for dev, one to VPN into work.

11:58 PM
@ThomasWard actually I was at home

meh
