now why does my app use the wakelock permission?

1:15 PM
I don't even know what that is

you know Android wakelocks right?
how apps can prevent the device from entering deep sleep
but my app shouldn't even run in the background

oh I see
surely OP does not want to rename ALL the files with yesterday's date, like Yaron's script does here?

Can a moderator assist with the trigger of move to chat with this question askubuntu.com/questions/896708/…?

@L.D.James Done.

@James Thanks!

1:45 PM
@James Dammit! That was confusing.

Q: How to automatically create a runtime folder with a systemd service or tmpfiles.d?

geonautI'm trying to create a runtime folder at /run/gunicorn for some Gunicorn socket / PID files, which are for a Django application. I can get everything working if I manually create directories. However, I'm trying to make this a robust setup, and eventually use Ansible to automate everything. I th...

@James why are you Marco today lol ?

@Serg because it's Marco's birthday ! :)

Oooo, makes sense

@Serg didn't you wanna go to sleep ? :)

@cl-netbox i did, i slept until 8:35, now on my way to work. I've work at 10
and if i am late , i will loose 1/4 of my per hour pay, 2.357$

aaannnddd ... the light orange panda marched in ... hahaha ... good afternoon @ParanoidPanda ! :) How are you doing my friend ? :)

3:35 PM
sigh . . . i need more money . . . too broke for anything . . .

user136984
@Dorian Yes, that was a difficuilt one, I was indeed looking for a software solution. However apparently there is none and a better method would be to cover the webcam. I would of course prefer an answer which offered both a software and a physical answer. Because the physical one is clearly the best one as it wouldn't have any vulnerabilities in it that the software one might have, I accepted it. But it would be nice to have one which actually answered my original question.

@Serg oh that's not much ... only less than 10 bucks per hour ? :(

@cl-netbox yep, 9.5 actually

@Serg not very nice from your boss ! :(

user136984
Sometimes though, you ask one question, but then are told that you're asking the wrong question and that a better solution would fit. Search for the XY problem on the SO or SE Meta (don't remember which it was on), it might have even been on the blog.

3:42 PM
@ParanoidPanda "don't remember which it was on" ... hope you remember me ! no response -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/36363383#36363383 ? :D

@cl-netbox well, we are student employees, so we can't get too high if a pay anyway. I'm actually considering that maybe i should start looking for something outside of college. Problem is that i don't have any experience either, so it's hard finding a job

@Serg yes, unfortunately you are right, it won't be easy to find a good job with fair payment outside ... hope that once you finished your studies it will become a bit more easy ! :)

Q: b43-fwcutter install fails. No internet access. Ubuntu 10.04

BuvinJI am trying to get my wifi or ethernet connection to work on Ubuntu 10.04. Neither will. I therefor have no internet access. There seems to be driver issue. From what I've seen, the first step to resolving this is to install b43-fwcutter. Multiple sources state this, including the "official docs...

A: How cost effective is it to have the option to generate a permalink for every chat comment

Kaz WolfeFrom a purely technical aspect, there is essentially no additional cost to generating a permalink for every comment. @James well, that's where I'm heading next :)

@James I'll pick a better slogan . . . once i come up with one . . .

@Serg Please and thank you. :-)
Can't wait to hear your campaign slogan.

@James The thing is that many of us never ever had any single contact with Marco ... maybe that's the reason why we didn't change the avatar ... and as everybody has one day in each year which is his or her birthday ... you know what I mean James and @Seth ? :) OTOH look at the star wall : many stars there ... :)

@cl-netbox I forgot that he hasn't been around a whole lot lately.
You make a good point.

4:45 PM
@James When you talk to Marco next time, please tell him that I wish him all the best and especially good health and a lot of fun and luck in private and business life ! :)

welp, I changed my avatar, but i'll go back to my blue ways tomorrow

@terdon hahaha ... gorgeous ! :D :D :D

@terdon this is very . . . cheesy . . .

@terdon it just looks a bit grating

So, how shall I kill my time ? should I go write more verilog code ? or should I just chill and read a book or something ?

4:58 PM
@Thijser Hello Thijs ! :) Everything okay ? :)
@Serg my suggestion : chill and sleep ! :)

@cl-netbox I like the chill part, but I can't sleep - I'm at work after all

@Serg 9,5 bucks for half an hour of work (normal payment would be 19 bucks per hour) + 0 bucks for half an hour of sleep = 9,5 bucks ! :D

heh, well, that sure would be nice

@cl-netbox yes everything ok

Ack
This bloody nose has been going for more than 10 minutes so far...

5:04 PM
@Thijser nice ! :) good to hear ! :)

@cl-netbox wait they only pay you 19 bucks per hour?

@Thijser no it was a joke ... @Serg told me that he gets 9,5 dollars per hour ... :)

@cl-netbox ah ok, I only got half that conversation
btw any idea how to concatinate all the results from find with a comma between them?
I have c="sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image "
find t/Pictures -name "*.jpg"| while read line; do
c=${c}",",
c=${c}"$line"
done

echo $c
but that doesn't work

@Thijser No, but what are you trying to do?

@Zacharee1 put a cold wet tissue on your neck. Helps me

5:07 PM
@terdon I'm trying to get a string which I can inspect and then execute, I need to get all images inside of that folder or it' s subfolder passed to an AI, But I want to inspect it first

@Thijser you wanna make a comma-separated list of all *.jpg files ?

yes
(preferably in a string so I can futher manipulate it)

$ c="sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image "
$ while read line; do c="$c,$line"; done < <( find t/Pictures -name '*.jpg' )
$ echo "$c"
sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image ,t/Pictures/6.jpg,t/Pictures/10.jpg,t/Pictures/9.jpg,t/Pictures/5.jpg,t/Pictures/3.jpg,t/Pictures/7.jpg,t/Pictures/1.jpg,t/Pictures/8.jpg,t/Pictures/2.jpg,t/Pictures/4.jpg
@Thijser ^^

Thanks!

This is a very annoying thing about bash. I never remember the exact explanation, but if you want to change a variable inside the while loop, you need that syntax.

5:11 PM
I would do something like this

Note that this will break if your file names can contain newlines.

find $HOME -maxdepth 1 -iname "*.jpg" -printf "%P," | awk '{print substr($0,0,length($0)-1)}'
The awk part is just to strip the last comma
so that you can have file1.jpg,file2.jpg,file3.jpg instead of file1.jpg,file2.jpg,file3.jpg,

If you're using maxdepth, there's no point in using find. Just use a glob.

@terdon there is a point to it when you don't want to write like six or more globs . . . I just use as example here, because I have tons of subdirectories in my $HOME
@terdon I think exact explanation is because piping is done in subshell. I had question about that somewhere, lemme find

@Serg Something like that yes. Don't worry, I've read various answers about this it's just that I keep forgetting the details.

Q: Shell variable doesn't change with pipe-while-read combination

SergConsider case 1: $ COUNT=0 ; while [ $COUNT -ne 3 ]; do echo $COUNT; COUNT=$(expr $COUNT + 1 );done 0 1 2 $ echo $COUNT 3 By the end of the loop COUNT variable is 3, as expected Consider case 2: $ COUNT=1; find . -print0 | while IFS= read -r -d '' FILE; do echo "$FILE"; expr $COUNT + 1; COU...

Anyway, @Thijser, combining @Serg's approach with mine, you can do it in a single command:
c="sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image $(find t/Pictures -name '*.jpg' -printf '%p,' | sed 's/,$//')"
That gives:

hey, @NathanOsman, your script is hanging all of chat (sechat).

terdon@tpad ~ $ c="sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image $(find t/Pictures -name '*.jpg' -printf '%p,' | sed 's/,$//')"
terdon@tpad ~ $ echo "$c"
sh -content_image in.jpg, style_image t/Pictures/6.jpg,t/Pictures/10.jpg,t/Pictures/9.jpg,t/Pictures/5.jpg,t/Pictures/3.jpg,t/Pictures/7.jpg,t/Pictures/1.jpg,t/Pictures/8.jpg,t/Pictures/2.jpg,t/Pictures/4.jpg

the page just dies entirely

@KazWolfe O.o yeah, i had that too, until disabled the script
Some javascript trickery is afoot

5:19 PM

@terdon thanks that seems to resolve everything

@KazWolfe It's happening to me too now.
So I'll push a fix soon.
(Hopefully within the hour.)

In case you guys were wondering you have advanced the cause of science by helping create the above image
(it's an AI that can make a picture look more like something else, In this case I asked it to make the lady look a little bit more like a racecar)

Goodbye - see you tomorrow :)

@cl-netbox goodbye!

5:33 PM
Wow! The galaxy S8 is amazing!

@Seth you get one? or just looking at the rumors?

@James I wish I got one.. but videos are out.

Oh, nice!

I hope the battery doesn't explode.

@Thijser Can we see the original?

5:37 PM
They ditched the hardware buttons, which surprised me.

@KazWolfe fixed now - re-enable and reload the page and all will be well.

hi. good evening

@Seth Boo. I like hardware buttons.

@terdon here it is

5:38 PM
ping ?

@Thijser Heh, nice :)

@NathanOsman still, watch the video(s). They ditched them but filled that space with screen. It looks amazing!

And great photo!

@Serg What the...

@terdon but so far tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ym8tb9&s=9 was the best (asked for a drawn style)

5:39 PM
heh

what's your favorite way to copy an ubuntu installation to another disk? dd isn't an option because I'm moving using an USB drive which is smaller than the partition size

@Seth I'm still hoping they'll go back to making smaller phones that you can actually use with one hand :(

Or is it still possible with dd?

Happy Birthday to Marco Ceppi, one of our early users and mods

5:40 PM
Ah.
Totally didn't see that even though it's on the starwall.

But ewwwww! Why is there a horrible smiley there? Please tell me that's your script and not some sort of global change.

@terdon It's my script.
:(

Phew. Good. I hate those damn things.

@terdon I think it's only on your side, I don't see it

Terdon is hating on my script :(
:P

5:41 PM
ty @NathanOsman, it's not crashing yet, but still not loading.

@NathanOsman I'm hating on emojis. I like the simple ascii ones.

@NathanOsman no worries, I'll go back to my blue ways tomorrow . . . or somewhere around 5 pm today

Q: working on a way to view thumbnails of vcards / vcf contact files as business cards with photo and contact info

Lili GatesWe are interested in building a way to show thumbnails of vcards / vcf contact files as business cards with photo and contact info in the file browser. so far a friend has written a script that can create a business card image of the vcf file, but we need someone to help make it work in nautilu...

@terdon yeah, it's sorta like his script is embodying systemd's mentality.

Oh, is it the same one that spies on you and tells people whether you're typing?

5:42 PM
yes

@terdon ಠ_ಠ
How is something you specifically install for a specific purpose spying?

@NathanOsman It isn't, of course. But that's why I didn't install it :P

Nah, it spies if it hides what it does.

@KazWolfe Also fixed.
@James ...which isn't the case because I clearly state what it does on the homepage and it's... open source.

hmmm. still seems to be having issues.

5:46 PM
Lemme restart Traefik.
Try it now.

@NathanOsman I wasn't being serious! I mean, yes, I personally find the idea invasive but I am very free not to install it. I wasn't implying it's any kind of spyware or anything.

there, it works now.

\o/
@terdon Ah, okay.

yep, de skriptz wekrz

For those interested in the post-mortem, it was getting stuck in a loop that didn't terminate correctly.
But it would only do that under certain conditions.

5:49 PM
@NathanOsman Oh wow. It never occurred to me that you'd take that seriously. Darn the lack of body language cues :(

So it didn't rear its ugly head right away.
@terdon Well, I didn't think you were serious. But I wanted to make sure :D

Oct 21 '15 at 23:40, by terdon
I mean, I'm sure it's well done, it's Nathan's after all, but I don't really need or have any interest in that functionality.
Oct 21 '15 at 23:41, by terdon
When someone types, I'll see it. Why spoil the surprise? :)

:)
In unrelated news, I decided to convert my mDNS project into a separate library. github.com/nitroshare/qmdnsengine

By the way anybody know of a way to download more vram?

@Thijser yes.

5:56 PM
@KazWolfe are you willing to tell me your secret? I keep running out and I already have 8gb

@Thijser sure, one sec

6:08 PM
(buffering?)

no, uploading it to my server.
ok. do curl https://kazwolfe.io/assets/computing/vram?amount=120. Replace 120 with however many units of vram you want.

I see a lot of vram's

you wanted to download a lot of vrams, right?

That's true

well, you got exactly what you wanted :)

6:12 PM
But seriously guys, anybody know of a way to make my system think it has more vram, perhaps using ram as vram (how terrible of an idea is that?)

very terrible, and no.
let me see if i can find the SE post...
from apple.se, but holds true: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/202267/…

OK that's a clear answer

i mean, there is a way to do it, but your performance would tank. And it's not easy at all.

what sort of solution would it be? I'm dealing with an AI that has to move a few neural networks around and I want to do that with maybe some kind of clever caching solution rather then moving them by code

i think you can do some clever stuff with memory addressing.

6:35 PM
ok why can't python find image ...
ah because it's image and not Image like stackoverflow suggested

@Seth isn't there a rocket launch today?

@NathanOsman spacex tomorow
(unless you are a few hours ahead of me)

Ah.
It's only 11:41am on Wednesday here.

6:54 PM
Hey plumbers.

Your mouse?

Where are you creating these?

@JacobVlijm it's a dog interpeted as a cat
@NathanOsman it's my own ai, working on my master thesis

Lol

6:57 PM
@Thijser That is really cool.

@NathanOsman thanks, it really is, however I can really feel that this is tech that is just out of reach, even my gtx1070 is constantly being strained to the breaking point

@JacobVlijm it is a dupe, no?
Would vote, but, also have hammer

@Zanna total dupe i think :)

Seems so to me
Voted :S

^ yeah, also tested it both ways (his and the dupe answer, so I am pretty sure that's the issue) @Zanna

7:07 PM
:)
I hope it is ok then
Ah I see you voted before adding the tag

Ah, you are right, I was wondering why my command-line vote didn't work haha

@Zanna so yeah, i found @terdon 's question about all the different renames. For all practical purposes , I'd say stick with prename

Oh yeah, absolutely. Much better syntax IMO.

it's a whole lotta mess with the names though

7:15 PM
Aye

@JacobVlijm I was hesitating because I know you have a hammer, wondered why you didn't drop it

@NathanOsman I thought there was one this week but I couldn't find it online.

@Serg yeah for sure, but how to be sure I am calling the right rename? I will read the post! Thank you for that :)

@Seth It isn't until tomorrow at 3pm PST or something like that.
I'll be at work and won't see it :(

7:21 PM
Dammit, still confused about p?rename
I'm getting a headache...

@NathanOsman your work doesn't like rocket launches? :(

@JacobVlijm lol :)
That was my first go with the hammer, so I'm grateful

You did great!
congratulations :)
Had to withdraw my first two...

Q: Find out how much of my networking capacity I'm using?

maxpleOn an AWS Ubuntu server I'm running a script that makes 1 million HTTP calls. I am considering whether or not to split it up into parallel processes. Is there some way I can see a graph of my usage vs the capacity?

@Zanna Well, you can always stick with giving full path , /usr/bin/rename. I personally always use prename, because that avoids confusion with my shell's internal rename
mmmm, sometimes i think i need a hammer to the face . . .

7:25 PM
@Serg thanks again :)

@Zanna always welcome :)

@JacobVlijm ^_^ thanks! At least it is easily undone

@Zacharee1 ok, entered, but I'm not sure your referral code worked.

Ok, well . . . looks like everybody is back to their normal icons except me . . . still, happeh birfday to Marco, but I guess I'm going back to my icon now

7:49 PM
@KazWolfe did you know that you can for-loop characters in Java?
for (char c = 'A'; c <= 'Z'; c++) {}

@Zacharee1 technically yes, because that implicitly uses those char's decimal value, because ASCII

it's so weird
and so great

Not too weird if you remember that characters are consecutive integers in ASCII table

yeah but it's still great

in fact , that's one of the tricks that has been used in the past to convert to upper-case/lower-case
With UTF-8 now it is much more complex of a task, but in the past it was acceptable

7:53 PM
@Serg have you seen Mark's Don't Laugh video?

@Zacharee1 not yet. I'll check it out later after work or on lunch

@Serg you have to watch it

@Zacharee1 did you see the animation though ?
"No,no,no,no,no"

yep lol
omg
it's too funny

Speaking of humor , that's Leona Chin , a professional racer, drift champion , dressed up as a nerdy newbie driver
So yeah . . . those driving instructors had big surprise XD . . . and almost a heart attack

7:59 PM
I keep seeing Serg's avatar and going "Marco is back! Oh.."

nubcakery as usual

Me too :P

Well, if only chat would update my avatar . . .

well I found a weird version of Take on Me youtube.com/watch?v=QHpU0ZfXZ_g

sudo systemctl start kazwolfe.service

8:01 PM
whoa 937,000 subscribers

new bobgmbh video btdubs

in case anyone is wondering, this is in relation to Markiplier's video (@Serg)

@NathanOsman, script is broken again.

Hey @NathanOsman check out the lines I got from this OP's syslog. He ran out of RAM, right? askubuntu.com/q/897876/518562

@NathanOsman I keep getting broken image links as emoji replacement from your script, but reloading the page seems to fix it

8:03 PM
@ByteCommander disable any blockers you have
:D
works here :P :) ;)

there, it's back now. seems spotty atm

Some work, some don't. And if I F5, they're all there again.
I doubt it is a blocker

Traefik is doing some weird stuff.
(Traefik is the load balancer.)

(just use nginx like a real admin)

that sounds like a more likely explanation

8:04 PM
@KazWolfe For two dozen websites?

ye

That's a configuration nightmare.
I have to manage certs for each of them then.

hue

@NathanOsman no you don't.
if you have wildcards, you can just use global.
plus wouldn't you need to manually manage certs on any proxy?

@KazWolfe I'm moving away from wildcards and they aren't all the same domain.
@KazWolfe Traefik does it automatically.

8:05 PM
@Zacharee1 that band name though...

Not only that, it monitors Docker for services to load balance so I don't ever have to touch Traefik (in theory anyway) when I add and remove services.

@ByteCommander yeh

but their cover doesn't really sound any different from the original

that seems invasive

Also, stats.

8:06 PM
something that auto-detects services and takes over them?
sounds like systemd.

@KazWolfe You know what else is in VASE of Eve ? My puns . . .

Hey @NathanOsman any chance you can pop in here? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/56259/…

@Serg You're fired.

aaaawww sniff,sniff

And no. No severance.

8:09 PM
But wait . . . I wasn't even hired . . . <.< . . .
I am in-fire-able O.o

Ok.
You're hired, welcome aboard. Now get out, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

@KazWolfe you are Trump-ing my chances to become an Ask Ubuntu apprentice . . . and I was just going to make Ask Ubuntu great again . . . and again . . . and again . . .
Welp, now my icon in chat is completely broken

@JacobVlijm arguably it's pretty close, although it seems like suggested duplicate asked for specific apps,while this new one asks for all apps that are maximized. It'd say that script of yours can be edited to include those cases as well

8:19 PM
@KazWolfe what do you call a missing wolf ? a where-wolf
3

@NathanOsman Kharkov, eastern Ukraine, that's where all the fighting is going on right now

@Serg Awoo.

@Serg That was ammunition exploding.

@Serg look into the answer, it includes both application specific version and a general one.

8:26 PM
@NathanOsman yep, I know. It's been on the news lately.

I was correct to reject, right? --^

@AndroidDev I think he changed the version to reach the minimal number of edited chars. But the edit was minimal. I'd prefer it to be bigger to bother reviewers with it, but it wasn't a bad edit I think.

@KazWolfe do you have any idea how to find which app is receiving an intent broadcast?
wait nvm found the app by guessing

8:43 PM
@JacobVlijm that original question is very interesting

Traefik is really acting up...

@Serg it is! Also interesting to see one's style of scripting changes over time. Would do it differently now. I need to remove much noise tomorrow, although the scripts still work :)

@JacobVlijm yeah, style changes over time. Sometimes i look at my old answers and think "Hmm, i could do it so much better now"

it's... beautiful.

@KazWolfe meh, it is not hackery enough. Needs more green text on white background
*black background

8:53 PM
