I am missing why you think so...

Similar project, similar style of asking.
@Zanna and same three SE sites in their profiles

7:27 AM
ah.

@Zanna I rejected I think he should write his iwn answer

or she...
thanks, I agree with you

or they
But I am kinda clueless with the edit.

@jokerdino thank you :)

@Zanna the one time I forget to mention ..or she.. is talking to you.. haha

8:13 AM
naturally :)
I generally only say "or she" if someone says "he" - it's meant to be a prompt to be gender neutral, not an affirmation of fictitious gender binary. but maybe I should say "or ze" to really provoke some thought ;)

or they

6 mins ago, by jokerdino
or they

or they

or they
but @jokerdino kinda gets the singular they ;p

Or though

8:18 AM
Yeah, I get it more often thanks to my language ._.

better language

Or thou

stupid crappy English

@Zanna of all they things you could steal from tamil... ;p
You guys stole "pepper water"

hahaha
and catamaran

8:19 AM
Que?

@JourneymanGeek ??

The word for pepper water / spicy water in English is mulligatawny, loaned from Tamil.

Mulligatawny [ˈmɐlɨɡəˈtɑːni] ( listen ) is an English soup with origins in Indian cuisine. The name originates from the Tamil words millagai / milagu and thanni (மிளகாய்த்தண்ணி / மிளகுத்தண்ணி) and can be translated as "pepper-water". The recipe for mulligatawny varied greatly over the years that there is no single original version. Later versions included British modifications that included meat but the local Madras recipe on which it was based most definitely did not. Early references to it in English go back to 1784. In 1827, William Kitchiner, wrote that it had become fashionable in Britain...

We call it Rasam.

Rasam is probably superior ;p

8:21 AM
Looks nice

I mean a proper rasa podi... is basically a national treasure ;p

Good for digestion I think.

haha I have made "mulligatawny" many years ago from Delia Smith's book of Vegetarian recipes. It was very good, but it was a thick soup. We put rice in it

Yeah, we also mix it with rice.

yup
modern rasam, is kinda light
though some people let it settle for super lightness ("nylon") or stir it
You can probably grab a mug of the stuff on a cold day ;p
or mix it with rice

8:25 AM
My desktop icons are large, and menus and background look differnet Am I too fat?

@JacobVlijm only if your chair breaks.

(I liked so much making soup with rice that I started to do so whenever I made soup, and I created a recipe that everyone loves, celery soup, and I am sure the rice is what makes it great, but in general it's rare to make soup with rice - most people/recipes use potatoes)
@JourneymanGeek I could definitely do with one of those right now
I'll take one polite singular they and one cup of pepper-water with rice please thanks

I got some okra here <3
Yum, time for lunch.

Making breakfast...

8:36 AM
@jokerdino oh lucky you <3
seems like you have lots of nice things

8:58 AM
fried okra?

nom nom

9:11 AM
Finally awake RW? :)

9:27 AM
@edwinksl alas, something that I don't have as often as I like.

10:07 AM
Why would someone put a bounty on an existing question, and never look back at it? No comment, no nothing. I'd rather see the old existing answer get the full bounty if he doesn't like the new one than just no sign of life, which is going to happen I am afraid. askubuntu.com/questions/819127/…

mystery

10:54 AM
damn. if you every feel the need to cry view this :D reddit.com/r/videos/comments/5s5d9e/…

11:09 AM
Noob question: To ping someone with a space in his username, we should leave out the space. Is there anything special to do when someone has a ' in his or her name?

I don't think that's a noob question

It feels noob though :)

Well I'm a noob too; I will wait for the answer
much more of a noob than you obviously...

I could ask on meta if we're not the only ones :)

Which person are we trying to ping?

11:12 AM
Aszune's Heart
... or Liver

@JacobVlijm you can't ping them. They were probably notified when you left the comment under they bountied question, but you can't ping them here or anywhere else.

He has not visited SE for the last 7 days.

In any case, you've already pinged them once and the user hasn't been seen for days. What's the point of pinging again?

Hello everybody ! :)

@terdon I tried two ways, but not sure if I did correctly

11:13 AM
frustration demands that pinging be done. Rest is impossible if the ping cannot be completed

@JacobVlijm Just leave it. They're not an active user, they dont' visit very often. They left the bounty hoping someone would post something different but didn't check back. Ok, it happens.

@JacobVlijm not spleen or pancreas?

@terdon yeah sure, but apart from that, I was curious how to ping a '
@JourneymanGeek pancreas?

small organ, very useful.
Unlike the appendix

@JourneymanGeek haha, I even don't understand my own jokes :)

11:18 AM
@JacobVlijm find one of their posts and start writing as comment. You'll see how it autocompletes (even without posting it).

@terdon tried that too, but nothing appears.

@JacobVlijm Yes, it needs to be one where at least one other user has commented. Otherwise, the OP's name isn't autocompleted.

Good morning terdon ! :) What I wanted to ask you @terdon : Did your new notebook arrive in the meantime and which system(s) do you want to install on it ? :)

@terdon ...and on SO, the username is different.

@cl-netbox Not yet, and Arch.

11:22 AM
This is how you do it: @ Aszune'sHeart

@jokerdino AHA, so no special actions, just leave out the space. Thanks!

who is Aszune?

@terdon You might get into some trouble with the graphics ... did you ever try to install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers on arch ? Maybe it's a good idea to install ubuntu first and arch afterwards, because there is no other system that makes it so easy to install these drivers than ubuntu. :)

Heartless person

Fifty ways to leave your liver.

11:26 AM
@jokerdino Heartful dino ! :D Hi ! :)

Hiya

@JacobVlijm the spleen ...
"OH MY SPLEEN!" No one ever cares...

the cabbages

@JourneymanGeek haha

@cl-netbox Well no, in my experience Mint was always easier than Ubuntu for this sort of thing. That said, yes I have installed the proprietary drivers on at least 2 machines and never had much trouble.

11:29 AM
I don't think there is an opposite of "heartless"

So most likely, a woman

Another shortcoming of this language

11:31 AM
@terdon looking at zanna's link

Ah

The user's profile says "Just a young man" if that's what you meant
(iirc)

@terdon great ! :) When you need help once the machine arrives, please feel free to ask me anytime ! :) The newer the hardware is, the more difficult it might become ... though I can't promise 100 % success of course ... :)

Ouch, I am not making much sense today @Zanna ...or ever...

@cl-netbox Thanks :)

11:33 AM
@terdon You're welcome ! :)

Although, again, I'd expect Arch to do better on newer hardware than any release-based distro, simply because it's more bleeding edge. Of course, the flip side fo that, is that you can also expect more breakages. But that's OK if you know how to fix them.

you are fine @JacobVlijm it is the world that is senseless

> [...] until her heart was returned to her.
Definitely no heart.

See? I knew it ^
@Zanna A variation on "Listen, our Johnny is the only one in the orchestra who tuned well!" :)

wat

11:46 AM
@JacobVlijm hahaha XD but no not at all. Really, things are very stupid and there is just a little precious sanity here and there among nice folks like those in this room...

12:37 PM
Is there any weird Unity-specific reason why an image file would need to be executable for it to be set as a desktop background and survive reboots?

Nope, saw it, makes no sense at all @terdon

OK

OK, DARK will @ThomasWard come here?
Muru,

12:54 PM
@UbuntuUser You are not @Hizqeel ! You are not having magical capabilities ... the reason why it does not work ... @ThomasWard only reacts on DARK EVIL calls from @Hizqeel ! :D :D :D

good morning

1:10 PM
@IanC Good afternoon Ian ! :)

@cl-netbox That makes sense.

@cl-netbox all good?

@UbuntuUser Good afternoon to you ! :)

@cl-netbox Or good morning for me! :)

@IanC Yup ... just finished a new answer ... :) and you ? what about yourself ? :)
@UbuntuUser Okay ... correction : Good morning to you ! :)

1:15 PM
@cl-netbox Nothing, just helping some people make a raspberry pi server for their chatbot that they hope to make a real AI.
Want a link?

@cl-netbox all cool too! Working a bit on my codes

@UbuntuUser why not ? Did you see my edit (and upvote) yesterday ? :)

@cl-netbox Yes why?

@IanC nice to hear ... coding is something I never did ... :)
@UbuntuUser Because you asked whether it's a good answer ... :)

@cl-netbox you can start learning if you find interest on it :)

1:18 PM
@cl-netbox Ah, yes... Fabby also edited it.... I must say thanks! (I got 40 rep yesterday)

@UbuntuUser Great ! :) Congrats ! :) Well done ! :) My new answer still has zero upvotes ... :D :D :D

Where is it?

@UbuntuUser Should be on the front page because I improved the question as well -> askubuntu.com/questions/879996/… ! :)

OK.

@Rinzwind Hi Rinzy ! :) Good afternoon to you ! :)

1:22 PM
@cl-netbox It seems helpful, I mean I don't have that problem but yeah!
@cl-netbox MJB seen 1m ago talked 738d ago!

@UbuntuUser Yes ... thank you ! :) ... everybody of us has other things considered to be a problem : one with boot, one with graphics, one with DE ... :)

@cl-netbox Yepy skippy doo!
@cl-netbox Do you want to see the chatbot?
Yep! well I need to go. I'm late for work! But the chatbot is here khanacademy.org/computer-programming/eon-development-v102a/…

@UbuntuUser Cool ! :) I couldn't do this ... :) But work on Sunday ? :)

@cl-netbox US != Europe

hello
can i ask a question for arch linux?

1:37 PM
@Gilad Not on the main site, no.
You might be looking for Unix & Linux.

oh so audits do count as reviews...

@muru thanks!

1:52 PM
@JacobVlijm no problem

2:05 PM
@cl-netbox Hello o/ How are you doing? :)

@Hizqeel Hello my friend ! :) I'm fine - thank you for asking ! :) What about yourself ? Everything "magic" ? :D

@cl-netbox Doing great :) ahh magic is fighting alone in the Dark right now :p

@Hizqeel Hey @ThomasWard please help my friend, he's in need of your assistance ... please help him to fight the DARK successfully, dear Mr. EVIL ! :D :D :D

@cl-netbox I was talking about ThomasWard himself, As I was trying to pick his mist .. :D :)

@Hizqeel hahaha :D :D :D

2:37 PM
Any ideas why this answer has no effect for me (xbindkeys + xdotool) askubuntu.com/a/880083/367990 ?

@ByteCommander cuz ur an nubcake

2:57 PM
hmm
AT&T why are you so expensive

Hey @jokerdino my wish was granted! I went to a (non-veg) cafe that I sometimes go to and Lo and behold they added a sweet potato & okra stew with rice to the menu :D

Ok it only had two or three tiny pieces of okra in it and I was unable to detect the promised spiciness, and there was not enough sauce to stick the rice together, but I was.so excited I did not even care about such minor shortcomings

3:23 PM
@Zanna @EliahKagan About askubuntu.com/q/880110/295286 While having ~/.bash_profile like that on stock Ubuntu is unusual , don't close-vote a question just because their config file doesn't look like a generic thing. It's still bash and same set of rules apply.

@Serg I have voted to close the question as unclear, not as off-topic.

@EliahKagan what's unclear about it ?

We don't know if they want to know why the code is there or what it does. And because we don't know how they are using their machine or what operating system is on it, we cannot give reasonable advice about whether or not it should be way way or is doing what they want.
In particular, on almost every OS except macOS (including Ubuntu), it is a very bad idea to use .bash_profile for commands that ought to run in every new terminal session, because most OSes (including Ubuntu) don't start most shells as login shells, and because there is often important code in .profile that is superseded by the mere existence of bash_profile.

@Serg I haven't voted to close that question

So, for example, the recommendation given the article linked in that answer should essentially never be followed on Ubuntu, and sometimes causes significant (though reversible) breakage. It also doesn't explain why the code would be there on most OSes (including Ubuntu), and what actually happens when one does that (which, in Ubuntu, includes all the code in .profile not running just because .bash_profile exists).
This is the sort of question that may seem like it can be answered based on the information that has been given, but really cannot.

3:30 PM
@EliahKagan OP asked what that code means. It's sufficient to explain what that code does, and that's it. Your phrase about Mac OS there could be a part of an answer.
Dont make huge deal out of it

@Serg I also want to point out that it is actually false that "the same set of rules of apply." Sourcing .bashrc in .bash_profile works on macOS because of the very unusual way that new graphical Terminal.app sessions use login shells instead of non-interactive login shells.

@EliahKagan I guess he meant the command source will do the same on bash in either OS, the consequences of sourcing .bashrc could differ though

@Serg The original title is "How do I explain the contents of the profile file". I don't think it is obviously that this is asking for an explanation of what the code does. It seems to me that it is asking why the code is there. Apparently it seemed that way to Zanna, too, considering the subsequent edit.

@EliahKagan tell me where in the man page it says ~/.bash_profile is only for Mac OS X ? Tell me why I can't set it to work on Ubuntu ?

@Serg It is not for macOS. I did not say that. On any system, it supersedes .profile, which on Ubuntu is usually used to do important things.
@Serg I don't know what you mean by "Dont make huge deal out of it." You're the one who pinged me in chat to lecture me about how you think I should use the site. Then when I replied to explain myself you are insisting your interpretation of the question is correct and that I am making "a huge deal" over it. I don't want to make a possibly tense situation worse, but I think this is really rude of you. I would appreciate it if you would not treat me, or anyone else, this way, ever again.

3:37 PM
Funnily enough there was a related question a few minutes earlier. askubuntu.com/questions/880093/…
@EliahKagan thanks for taking the trouble to transcribe the screenshot :)
Yes that was my interpretation and I think it is unclear why the code is there, if they are using Ubuntu at least!

@EliahKagan I gotta go to work now, we can continue this discussion later. I don't lecture anyone, but closing perfectly clear question as unclear isn't right.
@EliahKagan Also, where exactly was I rude ? Just because I disagree with close reason, makes me rude ?

@Serg You told me, "Dont make huge deal out of it" when you didn't like what I said in a discussion that you started because you thought the issue was important. It's not your view on the question that is rude, it's the actual rudeness that is rude.

@EliahKagan @Serg Please don't fight each other ... both of you are trying to improve the quality ... and please keep in mind : we're a circle of friends, aren't we ? :)

don't make us take the "Get along shirt" for you two!
:p

Forgot to say : Hello friends ! :) @EliahKagan @Serg

3:46 PM
@IanC lol

@EliahKagan I'm sorry if you perceived that phrase as rude, didn't meant it as so. I still think you are overthinking the question. Just explain what code does, maybe include some of the things you mentioned here, and be done with it

Good afternoon @Zanna ! :)

I fully agree that we are all trying to do what is best and that no one is deliberately trying to hurt anyone. However, I should say (and should have said before) that this is really about more than rudeness.
Telling people not to make a big deal out of something when they persist in disagreeing with you is frequently used as a way of silencing people. In this case, we are all lucky -- for example, I know the rules and expectations of our site. Therefore I am not actually being harmed here (just annoyed).

guh
SystemUI mods are complicated

I agree with @EliahKagan - if someone told me in here not to make a big deal out of something I would be really upset.
Hi @cl-netbox :)

3:53 PM
@Zanna Everything fine ? :)

@muru I see you voted to reopen this - i couldn't really figure out what they are trying to do, but if you think it's answerable I will certainly vote to reopen it askubuntu.com/review/reopen/674873

wonder if this'll work
guess not

@Zanna I think they nuked their original Ubuntu partition while trying to install MATE
And GRUB would start throwing errors after that, leaving them in a halfway state
no idea what's going on with the "unknown filesystem" though - that might be a problem with the USB

4:12 PM
I see they have self-answered saying they used this answer askubuntu.com/questions/493826/… to get into windows, so maybe it should be a dupe of that one instead

@Zanna meh, I'd retract my re-open vote if I could. Too much of a waste of time re-opening and closing it again - that comment is there for everyone to see
Or if @terdon drops by, he can do us a favour

Dunno what you want

haha I was thinking the same - if you want it open, I am all for that, but bothering 8 people to change the close reason naaah, but if we have a handy mod...
reopen that post to close as a dupe instead of unclear

@terdon this question closed as a dupe: askubuntu.com/questions/879864/grub-rescue-without-linux, if it's worth the trouble (no problem if you ignore it)

Done

4:24 PM
thanks! :)
but I think that is not the right dupe target really, since they said they actually used askubuntu.com/questions/493826/…

Oh, lol. :D

my bad
LDJames is making me lol
I think this person should add an answer rather than edit this one askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/674884

Ugh. OK, could you just figure out what needs to be done and let me know? Sorry but I have to teach a class and give a seminar on Tuesday and I have neither ready so am up to my eyballs in work at the moment and can't sort it out now.

sorry @terdon ! it's fine
I will flag it instead
I made a custom flag

lol
as a mod, I prefer people us flags over chat so there's a single place for me to look

4:35 PM
yeah indeed
much better to flag, sorry

5:04 PM
@ByteCommander run xbindkeys -k and press the keys you want. Replace control + semicolon with the output and reboot.

Hi @Seth ! :) How are you ? Something new about your health situation ? Hopefully something good ? :)

5:23 PM
@Seth I had done that (except reboot, but I restarted the daemon), but still no effect.
I suppose that xdotool might need something in its environment that xbindkeys does not provide...

@Zanna Why are you editing all those old posts that are useless at all ... the whole front page is flooded with all those old things ... and it's getting worse and worse every day ! Example -> askubuntu.com/questions/72178/… Completely unimportant ... the whole answer should be deleted ... Please note : no offense intended ! :)

yes indeed, it's because of the tag. I am looking at all the posts with it and retagging them/fixing them/close-voting them/voting to delete them because we are going to burn that tag
apologies for spamming the front page
it's just going to take me one more day to go through the rest
before that, I destroyed the tag
to do that I untagged every post
I am just janitoring, trying to keep the site clean, making sure posts have the right tags so people can find them
@cl-netbox I edited that answer in case it might be useful, but if you think it should be deleted, then flag it

Lol, I actually never notice such stuff because I always only watch askubuntu.com/questions?sort=newest instead of the frontpage ^_°

welp destroyed SystemUI. wouldn't start even after restoring the original. dirty flashed and now time to hope

@ByteCommander yeah I don't watch the front page either
to clarify what I'm doing now @cl-netbox since the tag will be burned, many of the posts should have tags that are acceptable like and instead so that people can still find them - that is how I imagine/hope what I'm doing should benefit the site

5:42 PM
@ByteCommander I'm doing both. Also specific tags

@Zanna please don't mass retag hardware-recs
There's no hurry and a request went in to SE.

@Serg Would you mind having a look at my latest Q? It probably will involve the use of xdotool and some keyboard event magic, probably a simple shortcut is not enough. askubuntu.com/q/880054/367990

@ByteCommander I saw it this morning, will see what i can do

Shameless question, but what is a docker container? The docs have no connection to my imagination...

@JacobVlijm It's some kind of outsourcing single processes into a "sandboxed" environment ... and a huge hype (IMHO) ! :)

5:54 PM
@cl-netbox thanks! So no rc.local in a docker?

@Seth oh it's a bad thing to do?

@JacobVlijm I wouldn't do that ... :)

@cl-netbox thanks again. Obviously, I need to upgrade my knowledge :)

@JacobVlijm hahaha ... better learn some LXD ! :)

@JacobVlijm docker is like virtual machine , sort of, but for specific program, and is intended to be cross-platform. They're self contained, as far as I know, so they have all the necessary libraries with them, but not more than that

5:57 PM
@Zanna it floods the front page and hides new questions. It's acceptable with small enough tags, but if we put in a request to SE to nuke it there's no point.

@cl-netbox another thing I have no experinece in...

@Zanna it makes the FP unuseable :P
Plus SE can do it silently :D
and damn some of those should be closed as off topic :X

@Serg ouch, than I said some stupid things today haha

I was just worried that the posts might need new tags

@JacobVlijm see some links and more info at the end of my answer -> askubuntu.com/questions/818660/… ! :) I tried to make it as short as possible ... it's some kind of virtualization solution ! :)

5:58 PM
yeah I did VTC some of them

@JacobVlijm it's ok, happens. Docker and snapcraft are pretty much new and growing technology, quite popular on server-side of things, although they can be used on desktop,too.

Anyway I did most of it this morning at 5 am when nobody was around
there were 187 when I started, and now there are 75
so I guess I already screwed up
