The correct answer to your question is:
man rsync

that's the command, the context is here help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving (but not necessary)

What do you want to know about this command?

My question is not found in rsync, but also the online manual has like 20 pages
I want to know why is the "/." part at the end of source and destination folder necessary? I've seen that syntax all over the internet.

@seshoumara the correct answer to that question is:
RTFM
We all read manuals and that's why we're good
You should read them too!

I doubt what I asked is in the manual

12:03 AM
@seshoumara Want to bet 100$?

almost, yes

:D almost != yes
@gracious1 Don't forget to accept the answer after it works!!!!
@seshoumara rsync is only 20 pages.

:)) "only 20 pages"

@seshoumara what have you asked? I think I catched the train moving (do they say that in english too?)

@Fabby I will, once I do it. I have to go to dinner, and if it's late when I return, I will probably get started in the morning.

12:05 AM
@gracious1 Good for you! Enjoy dinner!

I'm hoping someone will come up with a solution rather than a dinner in the meantime. ;-)
@Fabby thanks

@gracious1 forget it!

@seshoumara btw, 20 pages isn't THAAAAT much, bash man page is ~140 and gcc is around that too I guess (or more)

@gracious1 Mine is the best answer you'll get

but what's the question?
@Serg how was work today? Did you get to work on PyUtils?

12:06 AM
@seshoumara Sometimes you use rsync to copy to a destination directory you (think you) know exists. If it doesn't exist, you don't want it to be created, and you don't want the files to go in the parent--you just want an error message and nothing copied. Using /. as in that command achieves this. See ProTip: make rsync fail more reliably.

@IanC I want to know why is the "/." part at the end of source and destination folder necessary in the bash command rsync -aXS --exclude='/*/.gvfs' /home/. /media/home/.
that's my first question actually, I have 2 in total

@seshoumara I think @EliahKagan just nailed it :)

@IanC @EliahKagan yes, reading it now

@seshoumara MySQL manual is 29 chapters and 5244 pages
20 rsync man pages is peanuts
Someone should star that ----^

I just guessed the number based on how small the scroll bar was, I didn't actually counted, could be more. For someone that uses bash just enough to get along, 20 man pages are extreme. That's my opinion.

12:15 AM
/shrug Opinions differ. I believe in service through excellence...
Anyway, with that being said: Good night all
shutdown -h now

night

@IanC nope, i spent half the day trying to find a good question to work on and then mostly was researching other things

@IanC this was the question

I am worried about saving enough money for going to China

ooh, I meant what was seshoumara's question on the `rsync` command :p
I guess I remember you mentioning that problem yesterday though
@Serg when are you planning it?

12:22 AM
@IanC summer of this year but will depend on my income. I seriously need a better job

@EliahKagan Good read, thank you. And I did read a small portion of the rsync man btw, just not all of it. I knew adding a / only to source folder tells rsync to move it's content to destination folder directly, that is don't create the source folder inside destination. But the /. eluded me till now.
And since in my case I already knew that source and dest are both folders, and this was a one time execution, not present in a script, I didn't knew the safe convention regarding possible handling of files only with rsync.
With your permission, I would like to ask my 2nd and last question. One parameter to rsync in that example was --exclude='/*/.gvfs'. I don't understand why /*/.
If I was to execute the command from /home to copy all user folders, wouldn't it be --exclude='*/.gvfs', or from anywhere --exclude='/home/*/.gvfs'. I know that /*/foo, doesn't match /home/USER/foo.

12:55 AM
Dude. Linux just crashed.
I haven't seen this in years.
Blinking keyboard LEDs and everything.
Wow.

thanks for reminding me that my laptop doesn't even have a Pause/Break or ScrollLock key

Something really went wrong.

@NathanOsman sounds it. can we see the kernel logs?

Checking...

what were you doing that caused a full-on panic?

12:59 AM
Oh dang.
It's amdgpu.

of course.
of course it's the bloody graphics driver.

Either that or the wifi driver.
so...

...and on and on it goes.

[PSA] In the event of a kernel panic, keep calm and blame your graphics or WiFi driver.

1:01 AM
Let's scroll up a bit here...
Feb 3 16:53:26 nathan-desktop kernel: [17341.973376] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed
That preceded whatever happened.

A few of those interspersed.

oh, drm again.
something weird happened in rendering.
Also, when can NVIDIA release nv_gpu? Because i want that.

And finally:

Hm. Cities Skylines.

That's what I was using before the crash.

So that did something weird with rendering that caused a panic. Impressive.

1:05 AM
Well, there you have it.
An interesting post-mortem to say the least.

oh, cool. your kernel is completely libre.
I find the fact that the kernel considers itself tainted on non-GPL stuff being found extremely stupid.

@KazWolfe Yeah, so I can legitimately yell at someone over on the kernel team now :D

@NathanOsman blame systemd

@Serg Systemd's innocent here.

Glares at systemd...

1:08 AM
#StopTheSystemdHate

@KazWolfe i don't care, still blame it

It still deserves a glare either way.
Exactly.

you do know you can boot 16.04 in upstart mode, right?

@Seth so I got a message a short time later with a link to an ISO on Google Drive and a product key.
I'll compare MD5 hashes of the ISO.

@NathanOsman 8/10 fishy.
PM me the product key, I'll be sure to verify its geniune-ness :P

1:09 AM
Well, I have buyer protection.

@KazWolfe fishfishfish

So if anything is amiss, I can request a refund.

G2A?

@Zacharee1 Ended up using ebay, but thanks for the suggestion.

or eBay?
WHY WOULD YOU BUY SOFTWARE ON EBAY?!

1:10 AM
@KazWolfe ebay first and if that doesn't work, PayPal.
@KazWolfe is cheap.

gah.

@KazWolfe this
rip monies

Nathan, do you still have an .edu address?
like, anywhere?

I never had one.
I'm in Canada!

or whatever the candadian equivalent is.

1:11 AM
No, nothing equivalent.

or a college email at all.

I never did any post-secondary education.
Sorry :P

ah.

legasp

because if you did, you get free software from ms.

1:11 AM
I know, there's also BizSpark.
But I don't have an official business yet.

you don't?

Nop.

@KazWolfe not loading

Just me working for me.

@NathanOsman forshame :p

1:13 AM

What's that?

It's DreamSpark (aka MS Imagine)
Gives students (anyone with .edu or equivalent) free software for "educational" use.

I doubt any of that applies to me anyway since I'm using it for business.
It probably excludes "commercial use".

And my IntelliJ license is for "educational use only"
Nobody cares lol

I'll care if I get famous and then get sued.
They won't sue me now, sure.

1:15 AM
huehuehue

But they might when I'm in charge of a big company.

or should I say suesuesue

No, you should not.

> non-commercial research

1:16 AM
Exactly.
I'm not doing any of that.
I'm building software to profit off of.

but, they need to prove that your license was from DreamSpark.

Shouldn't be hard to do... :P

suesuesue

@Zacharee1 if wolfbot ever gets RO here, I am so deleting any message containing the word "hue"

so it won't find that one

1:19 AM
mission accomplished.

wat

@seshoumara That looks like a bug in the help page, yes. I also don't see how that should work. A single * in an --include or --exclude option to rsync won't match paths with internal slashes (i.e., it won't traverse directories, it won't match something like foo/bar). As you say, /*/foo does not match /home/USER/foo.
Fortunately there's no actual need to skip users' ~/.gvfs folders--as the help page says, you may get messages printed about how they cannot be copied, but everything else should still copy.

I love you, Jetbrains. You do things right for once, which is amazing.

@EliahKagan thank you very much for replying. My 2 questions were more for understanding value, than need to run a command. I spend my time on codegolf SE and since I started I'm nitpicking every code/command I see.

Cool.
It's good to know what stuff does that you are running on your computer. :)

1:27 AM

Looks interesting.

hehe. the FBI screwed up with Cellebrite.

time to rest myself, good night folks!

Either way, all the exploits used on the San Bernardino terrorist's iphone are now open for anyone to download. And, they are never going to get erased from the internet ever again.

1:46 AM
Er........

I've had this before
when someone who makes a 'purchase' of one of my items is highly suspected of being compromised
but usually it's eBay that opens a "disputed item" thing
though if you purchased an item same thing they tend to err on caution side of things
they warn you either way
because theft/fraud risk

So I'm probably okay?
The thing I bought was a digital download and the seller sent me the product key via ebay message.
So I was partly wondering if that's what triggered the warning.

if you're not sure check your eBay messages on the site itself and contact support about it
they can answer such questions better

1 hour later…
2:53 AM
@NathanOsman well that's sketchy

That's what I thought.
But... we'll see if it validates as a genuine key.
Still waiting for the ISO to finish downloading.

They are sending emails from an IP address that isn't listed in the SPF record.

@Chan-HoSuh not mine, I just thought it was funny.

iMovie won't run on a Mac with less than 1.5 GB of RAM... :(

I most definitely need an SSD.

I suspect this bountied question is unanswerable askubuntu.com/questions/846125/…
it already has three speculative not-really-answers

@Zanna silly to put a bounty on such an unspecific question from someone else. Could be anything. Will never have an answer that makes sense...

yeah, it's... frustrating to see that

Great comment though: Are you sure it isn't just working?

hahaha I missed that

:) In style...

1 hour later…
8:39 AM
HEY WAIT A MINUTE.
I bet I could install Ubuntu on this Mac and make everything work.
Better yet, I need an extremely minimal distro.

how minimal?
not sure if siltaz would boot in it but its as small as you get

I need something that can run VirtualBox and pretty much nothing else.

Does it need to be vbox?

What are the other options?

hm. You could build it in either case

8:43 AM
It needs support for OS X.

KVM is decent
github.com/kholia/OSX-KVM suggests it works

Interesting.

and its roughly as light as it gets

I don't suppose it includes 3D acceleration?
I'd like to somehow use iMovie if I can.

KVM?
No idea
I use it as a lightweight hypervisor mostly

8:47 AM
You're going to cringe when you hear what I'm doing.

It takes a lot to get me to cringe.

@muru Hello, can you help me with this question, my friend: askubuntu.com/questions/879454/…
Is there anyone who can answer this question and provide a better solution for it: askubuntu.com/questions/879454/…

I'm trying to pack macOS Sierra and Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Mac Mini with 4 GB of RAM. Yes, for realz.
@JourneymanGeek ---^

ah
makes sense.
A little more ram would be nice but I've done worse.

Honestly, I'd give anything to go back in time and buy a Mini with more RAM.
But now I'm stuck with 4 GB. It's soldered onto the mainboard.
So I gotta make the best of it.

8:59 AM
Heh. Throw esxi on it. It's actually a common config....

That's what I've spent all day doing.
But performance is poor.
ESXi occupies nearly half the memory itself.
Running two virtual machines causes so much thrashing that it's nearly impossible to use.

So I need more lightweight virtualization.

Yeah, KVM is about as light as it gets

If I can do 512 MB for the host, 2.5 GB for macOS, and 1 GB for Win2012, it might just work.

@Jacob I know. The latest is "What distro should I use?"

Exactly, so what is the question, the Q or the comment?

@Jacob That could be debated. I flagged as "too broad".

Is also fine I think. As it is, it is not an answerable question, either way :)
