6:00 PM
I like a slightly strange system, because if everything seems to be working absolutely fine then I am even more worried because it means I haven't found the issue yet, or it hasn't found me. :P

@ParanoidPanda The same is valid for fedora ... always the latest and newest software available - but : STABLE ! Thats why I use it alongside ubuntu ! :)
@ParanoidPanda hahaha ... that's what I call "panda strategy" ! :D

user136984
:D

Hey everybody

@ParanoidPanda no, I said the text looks polish.
@ParanoidPanda just don't come back here and complain when everything breaks because you have the "latest" ;)

What's happening?

6:15 PM
@Seth hahaha ... true words spoken (hope you didn't miss them @ParanoidPanda) Hi Seth ! :)

hi

@Seth How are you ? ... I hope better :)

I'm not completely well, but I'm a whole lot closer :)

@Thijser Hi ! :)
@Seth I'm VERY glad to read this from you ! :)

me too haha

6:18 PM
@Seth Best luck for the "rest" ! :) I'm sure it'll turn out fine for you ... still "crossing my fingers" to let this come true ! :)

Thanks!

@Seth You're very welcome Seth ! :)

Got a new laptop now to put ubuntu on it

@Thijser nothing "special" ... as it seems ! :D
@Thijser Great ... just do it ! :)

Step 1 fix usb stick

6:21 PM
@Thijser Do it as described here -> askubuntu.com/questions/758658/… ! :)

yhea but I sadly lost my old ubuntu system so I have to do it using windows and the usb stick shows a lot of unallocated spacce but won' t format.

user136984
@Seth: Well, the latest seems to be doing fine so far. :)

yes that's why I gave you the link ... it tells you how to do it from within Windows as well ! :)

When you want to create the installation media from within Windows,
boot Windows, open command prompt as administrator and execute :

diskpart
list disk
select disk *
clean
create partition primary
active
format fs=fat32 quick
assign letter=**
exit

Note : * = number of USB drive | ** = select a free drive letter
Now mount the ISO file and copy the content to the USB disk.

@cl-netbox ah yes rufus does seem to do what the windows disk manager couldn't, format usb stick...

@Thijser don't use rufus, 3rd party tools often don't create the installation media properly ... better always use native (built-in) tools ! :)

6:30 PM
DISKPART> format=fat32 quick :
the volume size is too big
(usb is 64 GB)

lol Windows partitioning

@ThomasWard setting up ubuntu

via Windows.

@ThomasWard hahaha ... yeah ... Windows as we know it ! :D :D :D
@Thijser Boot from a GParted Live media and format the USB drive from within there ! :)

well the usb is now formatted as exfat

Q: Cannot boot with new kernel - root of raid not recongnized "alert uuid does not exist"

JuiceeI'm trying to update kernel of ubuntu 16.04.2, current version is 3.14. Disks are setup as raid 0 with root partition on /dev/md2 and home on /dev/md3 When I boot with new kernel I get error Gave up wating for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay= (di...

So is rufus good for now creating the live usb itself?

@Thijser you can try ... but if it doesn't work, use GParted Live ... rufus should have formatted it in a way that it is readable for the tool. :)

waut gparted life is an .iso when I download it, I'm not sure how to handle that on windows

@Thijser Afterwards create the media as described before ! :)
@Thijser The same way as described in my answer (the link I gave you before) using diskpart from within Windows ! :)
@Thijser Here is the direct download link of the latest version -> sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/… ! :)
@Thijser Alternatively you can burn it to a CD ! :)

Nope don't have a cd player
But I still have to burn the gparted life.iso to the usb right I understand that part correctly?

6:46 PM
@Thijser Then prepare an USB disk with diskpart, mount the ISO file by right-clicking it in Windows Explorer or File Manager (whatever it is called) and copy the content of the ISO file to the USB drive. :)
@Thijser yes, of course ! :)

Hmm telling windows to boot from usb gives me system doesn't have any usb boot option please select other boot option in boot manager menu

@Thijser Boot into BIOS and select to boot from the USB there ! :)

ok windows has caught scent of an update moment

I came to announce the first SHA1 collision but Seth beat me to it.
Also, that isn't a terribly large amount of computation.
The Bitcoin network performs that many hashes every 1.5 seconds.
But anyway...

@Thijser Unfortunately I have to go now ... good luck ... see you (maybe) tomorrow ! :) By the way, once you have ubuntu installed, consider to drop that "painful" Windows thingie ... :D
Goodbye everyone ! :)

6:55 PM
@cl-netbox ok thanks, I need windows about once a month so I will keep it around on a small part of my HD (not ssd).

@Thijser You can create a virtual machine with KVM / qemu and install it there. :)

ah yes might try that one

Now what are we going to sign our TLS certificates with...
"...safer alternatives such as SHA-256..."

a pen?

Haven't we been through this before? (Switching algorithms?)

6:58 PM
@Thijser Good luck again ! :) Hope I could help you a little bit ... see you ! :)

see you!

@Seth what about Git? It's been using SHA1 for commits since I can't remember when.

yeah I know :/

However.
People should sign their commits.
That would certainly help.
I've started doing that.

how easy is that?

7:04 PM
If you've got GPG installed and set up, it's quite easy to add it to Git.

7:15 PM
Anyone here know what it means if a live usb gives the error" failed to claim resource 1

user136984
Does anyone know if the Ubuntu repositories contain the grsec hardened custom kernel?

did you try checking?

user136984
No, but I don't really have access to them at the moment...

How so?

user136984
Because I'm on Arch and the Ubuntu site isn't working for me properly today.

user136984
7:23 PM
But I would like to know because I will install it on my other machine then which currently doesn't have an internet connection due to driver issues.

packages.ubuntu.com is working for me.
The problem must be on your end.

user136984
I know, but I would just like someone to check and let me know.

it's working go fix your side of things

user136984
I don't know how, but the reason I asked about grsec here, is because I was hoping that one of you could just search for that name in the packages section which Nathan linked and let me know if anything comes up.

user136984
:)

7:29 PM
Seems to be Xenial-only.

user136984
@NathanOsman: Right, ok, thanks! :)

8:06 PM
the wolf army is falling

user136984
@Zacharee1: At last! The Empirical Fat Panda Army will be victorious once again! >:P

user136984
And on a more serious note, which wolf army? :D

does anyone know if it's possible to call a class from another project?
@ParanoidPanda Byte, Kaz and Serg were all wolves

user136984
Ah yes, and now they are all strange women?

user136984
Or is that just Byte? :P

8:10 PM
idk
I have com.android.systemui.statusbar.SignalClusterView in SystemUI and I want to be able to reference it from Signboard

@ParanoidPanda :middlefinger:

legasp

user136984
:D

@Zacharee1 el gaspo

hue

8:16 PM
sounds more masculine

user136984
Come on, do you know how long I was called a sock round here for? :P

user136984
I think you might even have been the one to start it.

user136984
But I can't really remember now.

robot ducks?

You've got a point there...

8:27 PM
I want a robot duck!

user136984
@Seth: What's that got to do with this?

@ParanoidPanda what do your socks have to do with this?

user136984
@Seth: Well, he's complaining that I am saying that his profile picture looks like a girl to me, I honestly thought it was originally. But I am saying that he used to call me a sock, and Fabby used to call me a girl for months. So I'm saying that they shouldn't get so uptight about it as they did it themselves in the past.

@ParanoidPanda or maybe you're just taking it more seriously then they are ;)

user136984
Am I? I don't think I am, I'm just saying that they can't complain for they did it themselves. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I don't care. After I realized that I was wrong about the picture, it just became a joke.

user136984
8:32 PM
If anybody is taking it too seriously it's them, that's all I meant.

@ParanoidPanda There's nothing wrong with that.

You sound a little paranoid

Yeah, that reply there wasn't meant too serious. More kidding in a cynical way...

user136984
@ByteCommander: I sort of meant my reply in a joking way. I'm doing system maintenance as well so perhaps I just wrote it slightly more seriously than I meant it.

/shrug

user136984
8:36 PM
Anyway, it doesn't matter, none of us meant anything very seriously in that exchange. And I was just a little confused about why @Seth was talking about robot ducks. :D

8:47 PM
I'm trying to get hibernation with a swap file (and without a swap partition) to work. Apparently, this swap file needs to be contiguous, with no fragmentation, but when I create a file with dd, it always ends up fragmented (I have a pretty full disk..). Any way around this, or any way to defragment a specific file, or create a non-fragmented file in the first place ?

By the way anyone who knows something about live usb creation who can look at this : askubuntu.com/questions/886629/…

@Thijser, When you boot the USB, hit any key when you see the first purple screen with an icon at the bottom, then hit F6, choose "nomodeset", and then choose "try ubuntu". Does it work ?

Let' s see
So I selected the linux usb as my disk then it inmidetly asks whatever or not I want to try ubuntu without installing (grub screen) and then it goes into the purple screen with 5 dots, pressing f6 at this point opens a screen saying /init: line 7 can' t open /dev/sr0: no medium found

In that case, at the grub screen, hit e, use the arrow keys to navigate to where it says quiet splash, and edit it to quiet splash nomodeset and hit F10 (i think) to boot.
Also, this might be a useful resource: askubuntu.com/questions/162075/…

9:03 PM
leaving the --- after the nomodeset?

yes

user136984
It's weird is there really no Wiki article on Anatidaephobia?

Someone should make it
@JonasCz nope that didn't work same problem

Hmm, in that case, no idea.. sorry.

@ParanoidPanda There is Alektorophobia though - fear of chicken. I guess that's close enough.

user136984
9:07 PM
@ByteCommander: I'd still like there to be an article specific to the ducks. Maybe i will write it. ;P

I think it' s an important article, someone should write it

user136984
@Serg: Have you heard the latest YouTube released Wagakki song by the way? :)

user136984
Well, actually, there are two: :)

9:19 PM
If I only had any idea what they're singing...

@ParanoidPanda I haven't but thank you !!!
Also . . . don't you hate it when homework assignments basically ask you to reinvent the wheel ?

user136984
@Serg You're welcome ;)

user136984
@Serg I know how you feel... I get whole booklets with each question being like that... :D

"Create your own 2-input Verilog gates called my_or, my_and,and my_not form 2-input nand gates" . . . those already exist and I will never have to implement that myself in the real world . . . why in the bloody hell do we need to do that ?

I think I had an assignment once where we had to design a " wheel class" which inherited from the "vehicle component" class.

9:29 PM
Ah, Java stuff

@Serg "Verilog"? Other than that, the task sounds familiar from my own courses

@Serg actually no it was for a class where we had to show that we could " shift paradigm" by abusing features from one language to make features for another. So we were doing inheritance in some low level language.

@ByteCommander Yes, verilog is hardware description language. Prototyping big circuits with logic gates is expensive, so what they have is something known as FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), which have millions of gates in them. Verilog and VHDL allows you to just write code, and FPGA will wire it up as if it was a real circuit

We wire up graphite on paper.

9:34 PM
module andgate (a, b, y);
    input a, b;
    output y;
    assign y = a & b;
endmodule
So here's simple verilog code

Or ink, if we want to be fancy

By the way , do you know why breadboards were called breadboards ? Because early electricians/electrical engineers actually soldered everything on wooden boards for cutting bread :D
@ParanoidPanda love the new songs :D

I knew that.
Should be called headboard though, because it makes you want to smash your head on it.

XD

user136984
@Serg: Same here! :D

9:41 PM
Got this "Account Action Required" on my phone. Pisses me off slightly, because these Google messages are hard to verify. Is it legitimate ? is it not ?
I wanna say a lot of f words right now
Like "flamboyant" and "fancy"

Fiddlesticks!

fdisk

user136984
fsck

Aw,man, I wanted to add another thing to my files-indicator, but then I remembered I'd need to modify how config file is read and written, and it'll take more than 15 minutes and I'm lazy today . . .
Maybe I should do that on the weekend . . .

10:03 PM
*I'd need to modify how config file is read and written, and it'll take more than 15 minutes*
You have a slow computer. @Serg

in /dev/chat, 1 min ago, by Serg
By the way, ASUS launched its own Raspberry Pi clone, but with better hardware: https://www.asus.com/uk/Single-board-Computer/TINKER-BOARD/ (and video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS66_BbalG8)
@JacobVlijm No, I have a slow brain . . . I need to rewrite some of the functions in my indicator
and I just don't wanna do anything today

I know the feeling. Everything seems a huge job
If you ever get bored, jump into numpy. You'll get in trance, such a beauty. Only thing is, if you get tired, you start handling numpy arrays as if they are the same as lists.

Oh, that's one of the modules I wanted to learn but so far haven't found any project for that. I might use it for something in communication systems, though
And it started snowing really heavy again
My gosh

Ah, that's not the first thing that pops into my mind :)
...I mean the commuinication stuff. Not the snow...

10:21 PM
Well, communication systems require whole bunch of calculations, so numpy seems ideal for number crunching

I got hibernate working - however, it's really slow. When I hibernate (ether through the GUI or with `pm-hibernate`, the screen goes blank for about two minutes, no disk activity, before it shows the "writing RAM image to disk" text and then shuts down. Something similar happens on resume - black screen with no activity for ~2 mins.
What should I look at to figure out what's causing this ?

10:38 PM
brb, have to move somewhere else
there's horrible smell coming from someone or something in the library

Somebody's Macbook overheated...

O.o

Q: Dual boot Ubuntu 16.06 aarch64 with CentOs 7.3 aarch64

J HurstI have a running Ubuntu aarch64 box and would like to dual boot it with centOS aarch64. I currently don't have a bootable device like a cdrom or usb stick. What are my options for making this machine dual boot with CentOS?

11:05 PM
@Serg one of the benefits of a Raspi is the community.
No one is going to be able to replicate what they have there.

@Seth Absolutely true. It's one of the main reasons why Ubuntu is also so successful . Although, there's always a market for better performance/better hardware

@Serg Absolutely (on both counts)
Actually, that's why I didn't leave ubuntu a long time ago. The community is freaking awesome.

OK, question - anybody wants to help me like and share stuff on stumbleupon ?

@Serg I saw your last message about that but you're going to have to be much more specific before I'm going to say anything about it.
I don't know the slightest thing about stumbleupon.

@Seth stumbleupon is basically internet scraping site. You click a button - a web page based on your interest shows up. It's one of the things I started using to "advertise" my indicators, and very soon will be posting links to my answers there.
I'm going to extend this strategy to some other places, too: instagram, google+, facebook, maybe digg , and some others
Effectively, I'm trying to promote my stuff on social media
Here's example - i opened stumbleupon.com, they show me a random blog about perl, because that's included in my interests

11:15 PM
hm, interesting.

11:41 PM
Anyone else get signed out of their Google account on an Android handset?

user136984
Oh dear... I think I need to go on a diet... And having two full lunches today instead of just the one didn't help... :D

Got signed out of my Google around on android and Chrome today @NathanOsman
I thought it was due to the new app I installed O_o

Aha.
So it was likely a global thing.

What on earth is going on with google ?

No idea.

11:43 PM
I appear to still be logged in..

Check for updates.
Maybe it's a Play Services update that's slowly rolling out.

user136984
My Google account spontaneously logged me out on this system yesterday so maybe something is going on...

Did see any mentions of update on their twitter
(and yes, google play has twitter account)

Maybe it has something to do with the SHA1 collision :P

O.o googol haz been hackz'd , wer all doomd
(Gotta spread the paranoia )

11:51 PM
The day the truth starts floating around the net instead of the usual fake news is the day they shut it down.

Puts on tinfoil hat...

now you need to find a tinfoil girl

is that a girl though? ^^^

Technically a woman . . . but every woman is a girl, regardless of the age . . . and its forbidden to ask a woman's age . . . so every woman is automatically a girl

11:55 PM
Just as some men want to pretend to be rich some women want to pretend to be girls.

I'm a pro in that department . . . I am still trying to remember my girlfriend's age, and I am too afraid to ask XD

If that's a woman there should be one more bachelor in the world to keep things in balance :p
