12:02 AM
good evening!

light-bulb moment I have a new indicator idea . . . I think I found something for myself to do over the weekend
@IanC evening

how are you today @Serg?

@IanC I'm alright. Yesterday had headache whole day, came home, ate and completely passed out. Much more refreshed today,though. It's snowing in Denver, so trying to stay indoors for the most part, but can't bring myself up to do homework

Getting late...

user136984
Goodnight folks! :)

@Serg sorry man, was talking to my dad on the phone. Snowing there? Here the sun is doing its thing, really warm weather, and I might have to face a few days without a fan.. Preparing myself psychologically :p

Q: Grub bypass Ubuntu installation

user3682983I have a win10 pc and I'm trying to set up a dual boot with Ubuntu using a pen drive with grub. The problem is when I select install Ubuntu from grub menu it has the same effect as if I click to boot Ubuntu directly from my pen drive, so the installation is not initialized but the Ubuntu SO is bo...

I'm using VirtualBox, is there a direct way to instrument it programmatically from the host?

what do you mean?

like boot it and then run a script from the host that sets it up.

@AaronHall you can use VBoxManage to configure the hardware aspect of things, boot, resize drive, etc. If you want to configure OS-specific settings, you might wanna consider setting up ssh server there
although if you can log into virtual machine from host . . . it makes no sense to ssh

1:11 AM
Is Oracle Virtual Box the best way of running Ubuntu 16.04 within Windows 8.1?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'd say yes. I personally never tried VM Ware, but VirtualBox works alright for me

My problem of not detecting specific wifi is still there. I think I found the problem.

Q: Can't find specific WiFi network (Ubuntu 14.04)

Paul BThere is one specific coffee shop WiFi network that I cannot connect to (doesn't even show up in the available networks listing) on my Ubuntu 14.04 laptop. I had previously connected to this WiFi network many times, and I can easily/reliably connect to the network using my iPhone or Mac laptop. ...

Is there any way I can tweak my ubuntu to detect wifi for every channel number?

ok, so I just sudo apt install sshserverorsomething?
and then execute it and ssh into it and... run my script through it?

1:30 AM
whoopsies looks like I was logged in on my sockpuppet when I wrote an answer. Oopsies.
@AaronHall It'd be a combination of SFTP + SSH
but yes.
On the VM: sudo apt-get install openssh-server
on the Client:
scp -oPORT=22 /path/to/script /home/user/
^ assuming you set up a specific user or a "root" password to logon as root. Though you'd have evils with just root so a temporary bootstrap user wouldn't hurt.
then you would ssh to the server, and execute the script, probably with sudo. ssh -p 22 user@vmipaddress sudo /home/user/script
and hope everything functions.

@AaronHall yep. So sudo apt-get install openssh-server on guest, configure bridged network on VM settings ( askubuntu.com/a/327512/295286) and . . . you might need port forwarding

Normally, I just create a VM and then store that as a template in my hypervisors or on disk, then reclone that accordingly whenever I need things to be identical to the setup
or I provision the servers, and then manage with Ansible or Puppet.

Oh, also you could do this: configure your VM to run the script stored in shared folder, and call it form /etc/rc.local
But Thomas will agree that's slightly insecure
OK, maybe not slightly . . .quite a lot actually

Sergly over here knows how I, an IT Security guy, think :P

@Man_From_India if your coffee-shop wifi uses 5 Ghz (a,c) type of wifi, and your card is only for 2.4 GHz (b,g,n), I think it makes sense that it doesn't find coffee shop's network
But other than that, i've no ideas

1:41 AM
hoo boy

I need coffee...
@Serg didn't you tell me you were gonna get me some coffee lol

@Serg Sorry for delay Serg. I'll try Virtual Box next month and let you know what I think.

@ThomasWard bfy.tw/8py

slaps @Serg for using LMGTFY

troll laugh
Well, if you're ever in Denver, I'll sure get you some coffee
Otherwise, I only have memes on my disposal
T_T meanwhile, I should probably go eat something. It's 6:49, I've class at 7:30, and I haven't had anything except two cups of coffee for the whole day

1:50 AM
^^^ Thomas plan for Serg's coffee

Also, OMG verilog takes forever to compile

oh well it's called Destructive Storage for a reason (RAM that is).
ok maybe it's volatile storage :)

2:05 AM
hah xD

2:25 AM
Its been a while, huh?

You mean since you've been in this room?

Yes.

ONEPLUS HYPE

About a week I think.

Alcatel One Plus?

2:32 AM

no

@Seth Eesh.
this is evil

2:46 AM
@Seth Hey! I bet that's the reason for the forced re-auth on Android today.
Oh wait - Google doesn't use CloudFlare :P

or do they?
That's actually a likely reason.
@ThomasWard Very.

CloudBleed - let the really stupid pun names return!

> "The underlying bug occurs because of a pointer error."
C development has just been set back three years... ಠ_ಠ
Opponents will jump all over this.

@NathanOsman It's probably time people stopped using memory unsafe languages anyway.
@NathanOsman not without undo reason. We're not all Linus Torvalds.

3:01 AM
It depends what we're talking about, I suppose.
Now that we tools like Rust and Go, we sort of have alternatives.
But even then, we're at the mercy of the implementation, which, at one point, must have been written in a memory-unsafe language.
We're faced with two less-than-ideal choices here: use a memory unsafe language or use one that provides safe memory usage with memory abstraction.

@NathanOsman yeah, which go does pretty well, no?

In the latter case, we take for granted that the implementation is correct.
It does, and I do believe it is the better of the two options.

btw, go is written in go so...

But still - the Go compiler can't be proven to be correct :D
@Seth Yes, but at some point, it originated in C.

(and assembly)

3:04 AM
And GCC has a Go frontend.
...which is written in C.

@NathanOsman fair enough.
Still much safer than writing everything in C or C++.

Whoa... hang on.
Don't drag C++ into this :P

@NathanOsman C++?
IIRC GCC were migrating to C++

It is possible to use C++ without pointers.
C++ includes smart pointers and things.
Things written in C/C++ - Linux kernel, web browsers, web servers, etc.
These are complex applications.
Few languages offer a suitable alternative.

fair enough. C++ never felt like more than a giant hack of C with OOP and a standard library, but I never got to know it that well.

3:11 AM
No, it's evolved to become so much more.
The template system is turing-complete :P

Sorry Nathan have to take Seth's side on this one.

Lol, it's okay :D
I'm on both sides of this - I like C++ and I think it still has valid uses. I also like Go and think people should be moving towards memory-safe languages.

I thought Seth was promoting C over C++... I wasn't referring to Go which I don't know.
If you want memory safe try COBOL :p

That's... a bit outdated :P

Yeah I know....I was kidding
But seriously there are lots of memory protected languages out there.
Perhaps C# is a nice middle ground between C and C++.
Anyway time to say goodnight :)

3:26 AM
C# is looking a bit more attractive now that dotnet core is open-source.
Python is nice but it has its own issues.

don't go dissing Python unless you want a war
Smokey's written in python lol

Smokey. Pffffffft.
My chat bot could lick Smokey with one glance.
:P

3:48 AM
waits for @Nathan to admit he failed because Smokey is a semi-sentient antispam bot and not just a chat bot

George is far more than a chat bot.
Hrm.

dead bot is dead lol

He's not dead.
I just can't seem to invite him to the room
And before anyone gets clever, no, the parameters to dig, etc. are not fed into a shell. Secondly, he is running in an isolated container, so the net yield of an exploitation is likely to be quite minimal.

Q: Help with cron and creating scheduler in ubuntu

tomI'm trying to work in and around API's , pretty new to it. Could I be suggested as to how can I create a scheduler to monitor specific website api's ??

5:31 AM
Huh... All this while I'd been thinking SO had higher rep requirements for privileges. Just checked and it's the same. So 100 more to go to be able to edit! \0/

haha lucky for them

5:44 AM
@muru I thought tag creation was higher, but maybe they've raised it everywhere else too.
yeah it's at 1500 there and 300 here.. Kinda wish they had raised it.

@Seth oh, yeah, it is. 5x more rep than elsewhere
Me too
Tbh, I only care about editing, commenting and downvoting privs. The rest are mostly nice-to-haves

yeah, those are the most important.

6:01 AM
what about close-voting?

@Zanna very important, but we were thinking of sites other than your "home" sites, if you will.

ah yes... it's not the same when you feel kind of like a guest. I have hardly ever flagged any questions to close on U&L for example, but I am impatient to be able to edit... 101 points to go :)

6:28 AM
Do we have any questions in which are actually about
User-mode Linux (UML) enables multiple virtual Linux kernel-based operating systems (known as guests) to run as an application within a normal Linux system (known as the host). As each guest is just a normal application running as a process in user space, this approach provides the user with a way of running multiple virtual Linux machines on a single piece of hardware, offering some isolation, generally without affecting the host environment's configuration or stability. == Applications == Numerous things become possible through the use of UML. One can run network services from a UML environment...
I always see that tag in posts for all sorts of userland tools, but never in anything about virtualization

6:52 AM
Hey everybody

Hello.

Anything happening?

@muru starts retagging

Or could one of you guys take a look here askubuntu.com/questions/886629/… (eager to get ubuntu working on my new system)

@Zanna maybe we should ask for burnination

6:57 AM
@Thijser Before or after the first SHA1 collision was discovered and CloudFlare disclosed that private data leaked from their reverse proxies?
:D

@Thijser have you tried nomodeset?

Yes I tried nomodeset

@muru seems like a valid tag if people would actually use it correctly :/ There are only 59 questions also...

@NathanOsman hmm I heard about SHA1 but not about cloudfare yet

7:04 AM
@NathanOsman hmm that doesn' t look very good...

But this is really cool:
That thing with the wheels is insane.
@Seth If you haven't seen that one yet, you should --^

7:34 AM
haha found a valid one askubuntu.com/questions/796512/user-mode-linux-on-xenial @muru not much of a question though

Ah.. so much for burnination

hmm... well I guess we don't need a tag for every package...
this is probably the worst-used tag I've ever seen >_<
fortunately, time to go to work

7:58 AM
Java really isn't all that bad (as a language).
The type safety is similar to Go - no automatic coercion (branching statements require boolean expressions, so if (numBytes) must be written if (numBytes != 0).)
I like that.

@Zanna The answer you criticized is from 2015 ... I don't see it as the highest priority to re-check my old answers for improvements all the time ! Also, I used the asterix for years when it comes to disk and partitions and it never ever lead to any trouble. When I accidentally come across an old answer, I will change it nevertheless from now on. But I think there are answers from other users which would need to be improved a lot more ... by the way, I deleted this old thing : too much trouble !
@Zanna And another thing ... I always try (and tried) my best to help other users here as good as I can and it makes me very sad to get criticized for whatever I do ... cl-netbox don't do this ... cl-netbox don't do that ... don't ping to say hello ... and so on ... don't you think that I deserve a little more appreciation and respect for my work on Ask Ubuntu ?

@cl-netbox Why are you taking suggestions for improvement as criticism?
If people are suggesting ways you can improve that is a show of respect and appreciation. If you were not respected and appreciated nobody would care to suggest anything.
For the pings, would you have preferred it if I had said nothing? Just silently get more and more annoyed at you without letting you know that it bothers me? That would, in my opinion, show a profound lack of respect.
I would only do that if you were someone I really didn't care about at all.
Nobody has ever posted a 100% perfect answer. The good answers are those that attract suggestions for improvement. The bad ones don't attract anything at all.
2

^ Wow

@terdon Because this is how I feel in the last time ... I wrote a few 100 answers and it isn't necessary that @Zanna "suggests" the same thing over and over again, that makes a suggestion getting annoying !
@terdon No, it was good that you explained it to me ! :) But I mean the whole situation ... generally ...

10:55 AM
Well, I don't know the details but I tend to appreciate it when someone takes the time to point out a way to improve my answer.
I've got quite a few that were basically crap as posted and became good because of the people who pointed out my mistakes or possible improvements in the comments.
I get that it can be annoying after a while, but it is also often very useful and it is always a show of respect, not lack of it.
You only bother to suggest something if you think the other person will hear you.
If you respect them enough.

@terdon This one -> askubuntu.com/questions/692249/… @Zanna missed the update in the answer and suggested to write what already was visible.

I've also gotten tired with long comment threads for trivial changes, I'm not saying I don't understand it, but I do usually welcome such things and have never considered them to be a lack of respect.
@cl-netbox What update? You are still using sd**

@terdon the comment "Maybe better to explain how to boot live and then edit the file, or reinstall grub if that doesn't work"

@cl-netbox Yes. That was a polite and helpful suggestion that would improve your answer. What's wrong with it? It wasn't criticizing you in any way!

@terdon The first comment was deleted and this comment makes no sense because we can see : Update as response to you comments ... If you only want to bring back the GRUB boot loader menu reinstall GRUB.

11:02 AM
@cl-netbox That won't help if the timeout has been set to 0. The OP hasn't lost grub, they just don't see it. So reinstalling it will make no difference at all.
And the first part of the answer also won't help since the OP can't get into grub.
So her comment is quite right and still relevant after the update.
But why are you taking it personally? That's what is confusing me. You posted an answer, somebody saw an error and was helpful enough to point it out. Great! Drinks all around!

@terdon okay okay ... the thing is deleted ... best solution for all of us

As you wish.

Oli
@terdon It does say to use the installation media, but that's not until the update at the end of the post. I agree with the suggestion to move that right to the top.

@Oli yes, but to use it to reinstall grub which won't change anything since the OP has set the timeout to 0 in /etc/default/grub
The OP would have to boot a live session, mount the local drive, edit the local /etc/default/grub then reinstall grub.
Which isn't really clear in the answer.

Oli
I think that is the idea of first half of the answer, but yeah, could be clearer.

11:09 AM
@terdon Unfortunately you seem to not get my point ... I very much appreciate (positive) suggestions as you know yourself from your own experience with me personally ... but I am used to express my true thoughts and I am feeling the way I said before generally. :)
@terdon I admit that it just might be the wrong day today when @Zanna wrote the first (deleted) comment and something exploded inside of me. It started with : As discussed many times ... (or something like that)
@JacobVlijm The new way to say hello ? hahaha ... Good morning Jacob ! :)

@cl-netbox Hey @cl-netbox

@cl-netbox No, I get it. I was just trying (and failing, apparently) to convince you that this sort of thing is a sign of respect, not disrespect. However, if you feel that way, you feel that way, and trying to "logic you" out of your feelings is not likely to work. That's a lesson I really need to learn at some point.

@terdon You misunderstand it : You DID convince me to take it NOT as criticism, rather than constructive suggestion to improve something ! What annoyed me was the fact that I was getting told for the xth time to change the asterix to something else starting with "as discussed several times" ... Do you expect me to re-check all my posts at once ? I guess not. You know that I am constantly trying to improve everything here - don't you ? :)

11:24 AM
Of course.

@terdon Thank you :)
@terdon You wrote crap ? hahaha ... can't believe it for a second ! :D

@cl-netbox Oh really?
Some examples:
ARGH! I take it all back, my apologies. I was thinking about the [[ ]], not [ ]. I'll delete our previous comments since they are irrelevant and I was just being an idiot (I'm leaving this one so you don't think I'm deleting just so people can't see that I was being an idiot) :) — terdon ♦ Jul 16 '14 at 14:41
@ZeroPiraeus and there I go, feeling like an idiot again. Yes, I figured that out just before reading your comment. Thanks to both you and HaukeLaging. Answer edited, should work as advertised now. — terdon ♦ Jun 9 '13 at 23:56
The first version of askubuntu.com/a/794014/85695 was completely wrong.
Believe me, I post crap just as often as the next idiot.
And don't get me started on my first shell answers on U&L, ugh.
If people like Stéphane and Gilles hadn't taken the time to completely destroy helpfully point out problems with my answers, I wouldn't know a third of what I know today.

11:44 AM
@terdon Now I show you that I am willing and able to learn from what you told me ... I improved the answer and un-deleted it -> askubuntu.com/questions/692249/… ! :) What do you say now ? :D Better now ? cc: @Oli @Zanna

If I'm not wrong, to force grub to show, you actually need to comment, not uncomment GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT... Also important to make sure GRUB_TIMEOUT=[some integer > 0]
For example 10, the default...

@terdon upvote for that ! :)

I force it myself, since pressing shift on boot does nothing, and Atm I need to boot some mouldly old kernel as the latest one is giving me trouble

@Zanna Please wait ... I check it - but I am in fedora right now ... I boot into ubuntu ... back in a few minutes :)

@cl-netbox I just edited so that you set GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 (show grub immediately), GRUB_TIMEOUT=8 (wait 8 seconds before booting the default option) and GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true (show remaining seconds before default is booted).
Should be fine now, +1 and thanks!

11:58 AM
I commented on your answer so that you would edit it to the point where I could upvote it. You know I hate unanswered questions
Thanks @terdon :)

Oli

@terdon Thank you very much terdon ! Very kind ! Really ! :)

@Oli There are many of him passing by it seems :)

And they all approve! ZOMG!

here is the content of my file ->

@terdon :)

@cl-netbox Yeah, commenting should be the same as setting it to 0, but I think you'll still need to set GRUB_TIMEOUT=3 to a non-0 value.

@Zanna Satisfied with the answer now -> askubuntu.com/questions/692249/… ? :)

@Zanna say no, say no (kidding)

@JacobVlijm hahaha ... very very funny :D :D :D

Yes now it's good, thanks a lot

12:07 PM
@Zanna disapointing, really disappointing

@Zanna And I thank you ! :) Now the comments are obsolete, can you remove them ? :)
@JacobVlijm What is disappointing ? :D

@JacobVlijm Don't you like when I get positive feedback (sometimes) ?

@cl-netbox removed mine already and flagged the old ones

@JacobVlijm ;)

test: aha
@terdon AHA, great :)

By the way, there's a tiny little "help" link way on the right hand side of the screen and chat formatting is explained there. it really isn't very easy to spot.

Ah, I see, I should raise my screen a bit; an area I never look.

Yeah, you and everybody else. I don't know why they didn't make that a bit more visible.

@terdon I think I found a better example which can explain better why I feel the way I described before ... every now and then @muru edits my answers and "improves then essentially" by removing a space (it's a part of a fun game as I take it normally) ... but do you think he leaves an upvote like you did ? no, not ! And sometimes these things summarize up and lead to pure frustration. Can you unstand me better now ? :)

12:17 PM
Um. No, a bit less now actually :) That someone takes the time to edit an answer doesn't mean they also think it deserves an upvote.

In case this hasn't been posted yet, Cloudflare has an official post on the "cloudbleed" bug

@cl-netbox when I edit punctuation, it doesn't mean I also took the time to understand it technically and check it

^ the combined conversation is starting to look like the average birthday party

@muru okay ... :)

@cl-netbox if I upset you, I am sorry. Please don't take it out on muru

12:21 PM
@terdon I mainly meant that I was criticized for doing the same - for making minor improvements. :)

You were? That's news to me.
In that case, I can only quote Oli:
22 hours ago, by Oli
I still think public spankings were a good idea.

@terdon yes I was ... some time ago @muru told me to stop editing other users post and instead better improve my ones.

Oh.

@cl-netbox I believe I objected to you "improving" grammar by adding mistakes
There's no reason you couldn't learn from the correction and improve both your own and others' posts

@muru I didn't take it as offense ... but I think that we all have our "styles" ... I am not a native English speaker, but I think most of my edits improve posts a lot ... hope you agree. :)

@cl-netbox don't stop, but, do improve your own.

@muru wow ... :D
@Zanna everything fine now ... I took what @muru said some time ago only as an example to explain my general feelings to @terdon. :)

Nov 14 '15 at 10:14, by muru
I'm not looking to discourage you, @cl-netbox, but when changing the form of a sentence, be sure you are improving it. :)
You even got a smiley haha
But I am literally the worst person ever at taking criticism

@Zanna hahaha .... yes, but that was the beginning of that discussion -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/201?m=25400881#25400881 do you see a smiley there ? I was quite new that time, especially when it came to chatting ... :)

I will turn into a 3y/o immediately if anyone so much as politely suggests I could do something better

12:36 PM
@Zanna That's really something you could do better at.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Ah! Hammer!
Damn, getting old.

@terdon hahaha ... wise old terdon :D

@terdon I'm not sure ... we both grew up with Led Zep and Floyd ... :D

12:39 PM
@terdon cries and leaves the room

@Zanna My nefarious plan worked!
@cl-netbox Yeah, but I am younger than they are :P

Lol

@terdon okay then we convert ourselves in "young farts" :D :D :D @Fabby do you hear me ? :D :D :D

Speak louder

Hearing is the first thing to go

12:42 PM
@muru hahaha ! :D

@cl-netbox Oh man, the temptation to make a horrible, bad taste joke about "farts" and "hear" and silent is almost overwhelming.
Guess I'm not quite as old as I look.

Anyone else get the CloudFlare memory leak email?

@terdon Fabby created it ... he once said : We old farts have to stick together ! :D

Nope
But the email they sent me was incredibly direct and transparent
It's still February right

Q: PulseAudio doesn't clean after itself

Can anyone recommend me a great site for troubleshooting (I got nasty errors) my ubuntu installation from winxp.

@skan You found it. Kinda. Just post a question on the main site, describe the error(s) you are seeing and see what we can come up with.

Thanks, I will, but 'sometimes' my processor doesn't start at all, to boot from CD. so also where can I know this hardware troubles too? I had multimeter and I am thinking about SMPS

@skan If you processor doesn't start at all that is most certainly a hardware issue, yes.
Those are off topic here. You can try on Super User instead.
But there's not much you can do if the processor isn't starting.
Does it make any noises? Beeps? If so, check you motherboard's manual for what they mean.

Thank you, I will try superuser too

Is it very old? Dirty? Try cleaning it and replacing the CPU's thermal paste.

1:30 PM
its a 7yr old

Does the power (PSU) work OK?
@skan laptop/desktop?

OK, good, easier to clean. have you ever cleaned it?

Yes

I was thinking of power issues
from SMPS, I don't know exact voltage levels of cables
can i ask them on superuser?

Yeah, it could be all sorts of things. Beeps would be helpful. If you don't get any, you could try a new PSU but we've reached the end of my very limited hardware expertise.
Yes, hardware stuff is on topic on Super User. The usual caveats apply: search first, show your research etc.
It could also just be a faulty case, everything is fine but the power button itself isn't working. Make sure the ATX cables are all well connected.

Sure. I will search and ask if needed on superuser first, then will return back here on installation issues.
Thanks and bye

You're welcome, and good luck!
Hmm. Now I wonder how old my desktop machine is.
$ for i in a1 a2 c1  b3; do echo "/dev/sd$i : $(sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sd$i | grep created)"; done | sort -nk8
/dev/sdc1 : Filesystem created:       Mon Nov 29 19:02:30 2010

Oldest file system is from 2010, but the tower itself was bought in 2001 or so. Still has a floppy!
I'd guess the sound card and maybe the network card are almost as old.

Oli
I'd go from SMART data

Ah, good point.

But even then, if you're like me, components follow me around between builds.

Yeah, exactly. The disks are far from the oldest piece of hardware in there.

Heh, remember sound blasters?
> Sound Blaster Live! (August 1998) saw the introduction of the EMU10K1 processor, a 2.44 million transistor audio DSP, rated at 1000 MIPS. The EMU10K1 featured hardware acceleration for DirectSound and EAX 1.0 and 2.0 (environmental audio extensions), a high-quality 64-voice MIDI sample-based synthesizer, and an integrated FX8010 DSP chip for real-time digital audio effects.
So yeah, that and the floppy are probably the oldest things there. Neither of them is used any more but the SB should still work.
So probably since 98-99 or so.

Oli
I can't remember the last time I had a discrete sound card.

Well, I had an external one more recently and will have one again as soon as I get around to it, but that's only for recording and the like.

Oli
I feel like even my P2 (RIP) had onboard sound.
@terdon Hmm fair point, I do have a USB DAC for my headphones.

1:45 PM
Yeah, I really need to get a DAC.
But first I need to get decent speakers. Not much point otherwise.
Good grief! Here's another blast from the past I have in there:

Your computer appears to be a museum for antiquated interconnects. Ooo a midi port. Ooo a 9600baud serial card.

Heh, no, those are probably the oldest. Well, and the floppy, but that isn't connected so I can't get its info.
But yes, I used to keep lilo on a floppy to boot this machine. I remember that much.
It's only job is to be a NAS anyway so. . .
My laptop is a tad more modern

Very! :) Only had it 3 weeks or so.

:) congrats
my dad wants me to do some work for him and I think he's going to give me an ancient Sony Vaio to use for it. So I might be getting a "new" toaster :D
