Q: How to install Ubuntu's Firefox in Linux Mint?

Carl RojasI recently migrated my system to Linux Mint from Ubuntu, and am very dissapointed by the Firefox version of Linux Mint. Problems include bookmarks and the lack of autocomplete in the Google search bar (i.e. the one within the browser, at the right side). A re-installation didn't improve anything;...

Oli
(I'm a professional Python developer) You should jump at it. Ask to do it part time to begin with so you know you're capable of fulfilling their needs —and tolerating their demands— and see how it goes.

@Oli man, I love you, so much what I needed to hear.

Oli
But you're far more adept with Python than a lot of people I've worked with.

@Oli Thank you so much, feel much more secure now :)

3:03 PM
@JacobVlijm Believe in your skills - they are great ! :)

@Oli, @cl-netbox The fun part is, I can't say it started here, but definitely I learned to improve it here :)

@JacobVlijm sorry for late reply Was having some light snack.. I totally agree with Oli .. 1 thing to add that join them and you will be confident writing scripts outside :) Go for it

snakes?

@JacobVlijm "learning by doing" always brings the best results ! :)

@JourneymanGeek I mean to say snack :)

3:07 PM
@Hizqeel in German that means something "small" to eat ! :)

@Hizqeel I'll go for it :)

@JacobVlijm Good to hear .. Goodluck :)
What i am doing So many spelling mistakes ...

@Hizqeel no ... everything you do is perfectly fine ! :)

@cl-netbox Does it mean anything else in english :p :D In English that also mean "small amount".. :)

3:20 PM
@Hizqeel ah okay ... then I missed what you meant with "light snack" ... hope you enjoyed the "big fat pizza" ! :D :D :D
By the way ... pizza ... this leads me to ask @Rinzwind : Already had sushi today ? :D
Hi Rinzy ! :)

sometimes I hate python
@Oli can I steal your python knowledge?
@Oli trying to create a way to do module.foo.bar() as an acceptable command, failing to figure out how to do it.
where module is imported via import module

Oli
What is foo?

@JacobVlijm I am a "professional" python developer. At least, I get paid for writing programs and some of them are in Python. And I can assure you that your Python knowledge is far, far greater than mine.
Just to say that professional != good.

@Oli well, i'm basically trying to replicate the sh function's git.remote.update() command magic in standard python
and failing epically
because apparently sh + this project + Windows fail hard
so i need to replicate that style of command without issue.

@terdon WOW, thanks man. This doubt was the last thing that kept me from jumping in :)

Oli
3:34 PM
Okay, so foo there is another module. You need a directory layout, something like...

@Oli the fun fact is, sh isn't using a subfolder for git or anything
it's got some odd blackmagic
that somehow works as is

Oli
git/
    __init__.py  # empty
    remote/
        __init__.py # will come to this in a second
        whatever.py

I am a biologist and a bioinformatician by training. I've never had any programming training at all. Everything I know about computers and programming I've learned by myself. So I was also quite worried when I was first hired to work as a full time developer. But it turns out I actually know my stuff well enough to do it professionally. I have some serious holes in my knowledge, yes, but I know how to learn and that is the most important skill you can have.

Oli
It's that second __init__.py where you can do from .whatever import update. And then you can call git.remote.update.

So yeah, go for it. What you don't know, you'll learn. If all professional developers already knew everything, SO wouldn't be as big as it is ;)

3:37 PM
^ that should probably be the measure, the ability to learn

Oli
And in fairness, you could probably fake all that in git/__init__.py, you might just benefit from splitting things out if you're implementing a lot of stuff.

Yep. I was hired as a Perl dev and my boss asked me to start writing some things in Python. So I said OK, and learned Python.

@JacobVlijm How many more compliments do you need ? :D

@terdon ....but with scientist, they know you can learn :)

Very different fields though. And while many scientists are programmers, most of us are crap at it. We don't tend to care much about efficiency or ease of use or anything because the final product isn't the software, but the results of running the software.
It is a very different mentality when your final objective is to create a program and the program isn't just a tool you use to get to your final objective.

3:39 PM
@terdon literally what my daughter told me haha ^

:)
But yeah, I was quite intimidated at first but after a year of this, I've come to realize that hey, one way or the other, I've been writing code for more than 10 years. I must have learned something by now!

Your Perl knowledge (like many other languages) is impressive
...but you knew that already :)

Oh, no, it isn't. I know my way around a perl one-liner and I can write a decent Perl program but it isn't impressive. Not if you compare me to other people who know perl. I'd say it's sort of average to low. And this isn't false modesty, I know enough to know how much I know.
It just seems impressive because you don't know Perl :)
Oh, and when it comes to you and Python, I think you're suffering from impostor syndrome.

@terdon I did a short start, but python is too tempting.

Yep. Unless you need to do text parsing. You can't beat perl for text parsing.

3:46 PM
@terdon That decribes exactly how I felt!

@JacobVlijm Thought so :)

...Jumping to Therapy haha

@NathanOsman do you have to rewrite the entire thing or just the front end?

I found a question that might be a VTC candidate -> askubuntu.com/questions/886164/… Am I right @terdon ? Please have a look. :)

heynnemaI've been taking some flak recently for posting duplicate/similar answers to questions that are similar, rather than noting that a duplicate answer may exist, and vtc. 3:54 PM
@cl-netbox VTC as what?

@terdon I voted as duplicate ... already has an answer. I asked the OP whether using 32-bit or 64-bit before ... :)

Sounds good 👍

Thanks :)

@JacobVlijm I asked myself the same ! :)

@cl-netbox haha, good to know I am not the only one :)

@JacobVlijm Also his answers often are hard to read and understand ... :)

cabbage all... For Ubuntu Server, is there a minimal version and a "bigger" version (with more packages/options) to download ? I have downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu Server edition (16.04.02) off the ubuntu site. (First timer to Ubuntu Server, though I have dabbled a bit in puppy/mint before)...

@WhirlMind Hi ! :) Check the alternative offerings here -> cdimage.ubuntu.com

I ask this because : the questioner in the following question mentions a Minimal Image. Even the minimal image has so many options in the Software Selection option, while mine has much fewer options (only DNS, LAMP, OpenSSH) etc.
@cl-netbox : Thanks for the link. From the directory listing I am unable to make out which is the minimal one and which is an elaborate one.
The question I mention :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/153265/what-does-the-basic-ubuntu-server-package-contain-in-software-selection-during

@WhirlMind Maybe I don't understand what you mean ... if you install the basic server without selecting any option from tasksel then you have the minimal server installed ... the ISO files are located here -> releases.ubuntu.com :)

No, I don't want to install a basic server. I would like to see more options (like the ones mentioned in the aforesaid question), but the installation process at that stage on my ISO (890 MB ISO), mentions only fewer options. Wonder which installation did that questioner use to be presented with so many additional options (such as LAMP server, Kubuntu Desktop and so on)...

user136984
Oh my god! So cute!!! :D

4:53 PM
err: The ISO size is 820 MB

@WhirlMind that is the standard normal ubuntu-server installation media in the screenshot afaik ! :)
@ParanoidPanda HA ! the big fat panda is back ! :D Nice to see you ... good afternoon my friend ! :)

user136984
Good afternoon @cl-netbox. :)

@ParanoidPanda Got my message from today ? :)

What about this :p

user136984
4:55 PM
@cl-netbox: Not sure.

user136984
@Hizqeel: That is most strange.

@ParanoidPanda then check ... :D

user136984
@cl-netbox: Ah...

@ParanoidPanda Hey o/ How are you doing?

user136984
I am fine. And you?

4:56 PM
@Hizqeel Is that guy an opossum playing dead? o.O

@ParanoidPanda I am good :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: You have become a woman now? O.o

@ByteCommander yes it is :D

user136984
@Hizqeel: Good :)

@ParanoidPanda THAT'S A GUY!

user136984
4:57 PM
@ByteCommander: Really?

@cl-netbox : Okay, I dunno why I would get fewer options. On another note, if I download Ubuntu Desktop ISO (as against a server one), would be able to install/start/stop Server packages (such as LAMP etc), by a click-click (no command prompt stuff) using Webmin or something ? In other words, does the Ubuntu Desktop ISO provide options to install server services ?

user136984
Looks like a fearsome woman in a bad mood to me... :P

Except the woman, the rest was right.

user136984
But then apparently my monster looks like a sock to some.

@WhirlMind yes of course ... install them manually or install taskel to install server meta packages. :)

user136984
Hey, I got a virus which plays non-stop gangman style in the background until it is deleted. :D

@cl-netbox : Okay, thanks for your time for a novice like me. Hope to make it big in the Linux world, LoL.

@ParanoidPanda From the rate at which you collect them, one could assume you're making them yourself... or you browse weird shady websites about the horizontal business all the time.

@WhirlMind You're always welcome ! :)

5:01 PM
Or are you working for <insert antivirus company name here> as honeypot?

What was this user doing? Trying to break their Ubuntu installation?

hi @cl-netbox

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, I do suppose that I've made a few which hang around my system in order to liven things up a bit. But playing bad pop music on a loop non-stop isn't one of them. :P

You normally never want --allow-remove-essential - except if you seek the challenge of fixing a totally messed up system. — Byte Commander 10 secs ago

If any of you have editing privileges on U&L, please remove the Ubuntu tag from all of these questions posted here.
The is the U&L equivalent of the version tags here. It should only be sued if the question is somehow specific to the Ubuntu project and doesn't apply to any other distribution.
In two years, I think I have quite literally seen only one case of a question posted here that was correctly tagged as Ubuntu.
So yeah, if you happen to have editing privileges on U&L, please remove that infernal tag.

Q: What is the simplest way to have remote GUI access to Ubuntu 16.04 "server" from Ubuntu 16.04 "desktop"?

4xyI'm trying to figure out what is "lightweight" way to configure my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS server to have access via GUI (over SSH as option). I would like to reach it from my Ubuntu 16.04 workstation. My professor from CS2 just walked in, and usually I keep pretty calm, but i kinda got nervous
not in a negative way,though
@ByteCommander whoa,whoa,whoa !!! You've transformed from a wolf into anime dude !

See my profile/about-me.
And no, it's not a woman.

I didn't say it was a woman, clearly a dude. Although i can see where that could come from

6:46 PM
I just had two people asking me who she is today...

@ByteCommander "she" is nice ! :)

Two people isn't too much , i wouldn't bother about it

Isn't "she" @Serg ? :)

@cl-netbox . . . .
well, does look cute

@Serg yes indeed ! :)

6:48 PM
@Serg it's definitely a guy by definition though, so what does that say about you?
:P

@ByteCommander Doesn't say anything specific. I'm pretty much OK with everything and could to some extend be considered bi-sexual :p

that wasn't really meant to go into detail, but ok, whatever...

Although I said from the beginning that it's a dude . . .so at least my eyesight is OK

anyway, not sure whether I would leave that statement in the public. not everybody is okay with such things nowadays yet

/shrugs . . . to some extent you're right . . .
although i don't particularly care

7:03 PM
Hi folks!
Do you know for what the SSH key section in UbuntuOne is? login.ubuntu.com/ssh-keys

@DavidFoerster probably SSH based logons for Canonical services
such as, say, sftp for dput and such

Hm… that makes sense. I've only seen it on Launchpad.
Though I thought dput uses GPG signatures for verification.

@DavidFoerster that's to verify it's uploaded by a valid key for signing

Sometimes I wonder why I bothered with 16 GB of RAM. Then I fire up Android Studio and I remember :D

you still have to get past the sftp (SSH tunneled FTP) part
which is the SSH key

7:10 PM
@NathanOsman Anything Java really. :-D
Chrome/Chromium tend to be incredibly hungry too.

@ByteCommander That's their problem.

Is this answer acceptable? OP advices to use a 14 days free trial version of a software he is affiliated with (which is not clearly disclosed in the answer) askubuntu.com/a/886243/367990
@terdon I just wanted to say it because I don't want Serg to possibly get bullied because of a bad comment I made.
BBL, Doctor Who is on air.

USB 3... why...

@ByteCommander If anyone here is being bullied because of their sexuality, no matter what it is, please alert a mod.

@terdon And then we bring forth a tool that makes people go *squish*

7:16 PM
@ByteCommander wait really? not the new season surely?

@ByteCommander I added a comment requesting the disclosure of that affiliation.

so... let's try to install kernel 4.9 on ubuntu 16.04 without nuking everything.

So I just loaded a 49.5 MB page in my browser.
Load time: 1.6m.

Edit I'm making in .php files are not directly visible? There is a delay? Anybody experienced that before?

@Seth season 9 episode 8 (the zygon invasion part 2)

@ByteCommander Oh that episode is AMAZING

Hmm... /shrug

There's like 10 minutes in it that should be saved forever, for future generations and everyone going into politics.

I couldn't shout it that loud. What exactly do you mean?
Oh.

8:09 PM
Did you finish it?

Yeah, well, it has a good message in it for sure.
I watched the whole episode, yes.

Cool.
I was just really impressed with the plot there. So much real world applicability.

Opera 12 was awful though.
I actually said that?!

Hrrmm... I keep getting answers suggesting me GUI PDF editors to go through my document manually, although I'm clearly asking for an automated way to process it. Hopefully my bold edit makes that more clear and does not scare people away. askubuntu.com/q/885923/367990
I would also consider rewarding a good answer with a generous bounty, depending on how much time it saves me to get that document printable.

Apparently it has an API for manipulating PDFs.

Boah, that page is huge...

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder if that will work.

But from skimming through it, it looks more like a library than a tool.

8:38 PM
I wonder what Document Viewer uses.

A Poppler library probably.
Anyway, thanks for the link, but it looks like reading those docs and getting familiar enough with that library to build a program which does what I want would actually take longer than removing the pages manually, I fear.

should I cancel my gym membership ?
I've not been there in a while

If you ask your doctor, no.

30$ / month though
kinda eggs-pensive

@Serg No. Start going more.
For the unmotivated there's nothing like losing money to get you to go more. I would say cancel it and go biking/running/something else but if you're anything like me you would start, do it a few times, then stop.

8:48 PM
eh . . . if only I had more time for that
I pretty much have time only on weekends, Friday and Sunday
Biking is a good idea though

I don't have time either, but I also don't need to worry about a membership...

@Serg that's what I said and you know what it got me? I've been too sick for a month now to go to school and I've barely touched my homework. Even now I barely have enough energy to be here. Don't neglect your body!

I agree with Seth, get someone there to help you come up with an addictive routine or something
Actually the best thing about my gym for me is playing mahjong on the cross trainers haha, that's what makes me go there, trying to get out with no reshuffles on every level

@Seth I don't think that neglecting your workout ties you to your bed/home for months though...

@ByteCommander no, I'm not saying it does, but it ties into overall health.

9:02 PM
And I have been in a similar situation as well, but exercising more wouldn't have changed a thing there either.

AMD Ryzen seems promising... they unveiled the R7 lineup today

Exercise is very important for your health. That is my only point. Don't tell yourself you don't have time to be healthy.

This ^

I agree, it's important. Just trying to figure out how to best approach it
Money play a factor , too
Well, I'll figure it out somehow

@Seth just that others don't care what you have time left for when demanding you to have time for them

9:12 PM
Also that ^

@ByteCommander nobody is going to take care of you for you. You have to do it yourself.

But many are going to prevent me from it.
University is not really a healthy thing after all...

Both extremely lame excuses.

So, effectively, I work 30 hours a week, and the rest of the time I take classes, pretty much 7 days a week on campus. I've some time on monday afternoon to go to gym, or I've some time on weekends. That also probably will need to take into consideration homework.

Better health -> more energy -> getting your stuff done faster :D
@Serg ugh :(

Q: How to configure vi in Ubuntu

Levent DiviliogluI am using vi with set ts=4 set number configuration and I am tired of settings these each time I open the vi editor on command line. How can I compare two text files to see whether the second contains all lines of the first (or more)?

diff file1 file2

And if I'm only interested in a truth value whether file1 is a subset of file2?

10:28 PM
So what you're really doing is contains_string(entire_file, part_of_file)?

No, the file1 does not have to be represented as continuous block in file 2. Just all the information must be there, optimally in the same order, but not necessarily continuous.

11:10 PM

@Serg all good man?

@IanC kinda
tired
and you ?

@Serg also tired, but quite happy. Went early to the flat to clean it, still some stuff to clean tomorrow, lots of stuff to work out, but I'm looking forward to getting my things there :)
I even felt like it was a good day for a beer, I'm barely drinking but I stopped by to get 3 beers (which for my old self is barely anything haha)
so cheers!

Cheers lol
i hardly drink lately
although sometimes i think i should lol

11:22 PM
@Serg I too barely drink at all here, I probably will drink on a visit I'll pay to my college frat in a couple weeks, and today just for celebrating a bit :)

@ByteCommander Thanks for edit on grub halt answer. I was on my phone during lunch break when I wrote it and was planning on updating it after work, but you beat me to it and probably did a better job to boot :) (no pun intended).
Hi @Serg and @Ian :). How are you feeling about the new place Ian?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hi there

@WinEunuuchs2Unix quite good! Was a bit shocked at first because the place was a bit dirty (the previous owner had worked on it, so there was lots of dust, some stuff left behind), but after giving it a good clean, it looks nice, and I feel really good about it! I can see it as a promising place :)

11:43 PM
@IanC The nice thing is you have it all to yourself and can decorate it however you want... You can even use cardboard boxes and cover them with used fabric as temporary tables.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix First thing I'm thinking of is a good rack with space for at least 4 surfboards :D
like a wood rack, only if I could do some wood working

You could use wall brackets for bookshelves and cover them with sponges and cloth and lay your boards on them instead of the normal wood that would go there.
^^^ a nice even 8k :)

Nice!
I'm 50 away from 25k. Need to find something to answer >:)

I have you to thank in part for that @Seth... your cool giffy thingy support :)
It gave the answers polish and made me look brighter than I am :p
^^^ Castro's 250 point bounty was incredible ^^^
