Is that supposed to be punny? :p
j/k @Seth let's hear / see your pun

@WinEunuuchs2Unix oh I just found it on twitter :P

The US Army just banned Nickle-Back, Creed and another band today I heard on the radio.

@Seth dude, you almost made me lol in class
took me effort to suppress it

@Serg :D

You know what not punny? I just burned my bachelors soup. I hate to sound 1950 before I was born but woman who can cook are underrated.
I think this is an epic fail of our NATO society.
@Seth I Don't get it Seth fake news has been around since parting of Red Seas and walking on water but these are necessary to bring the alien believers into religion back then so the don't rape and murder each other because there was no CCTV. Today's fake news is all about justifying killing millions of muslims to save them from their government. Two different tthings.

3:16 AM

I don't know what you meme?

hahahaha, nice one ;)

I kind of snorted my beer out of my nostrils after I read what I wrote.
credit to @Serg for explaining meme sounds like "meam" or "meem" or whatever.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix it does.

I'm sure Serg appreciate validation :)
Maybe you said it and not him though.
Hmmm
back in a bit.

3:20 AM
"Vote Nathan for moderator! Free pop tarts for all!"

Gotta spread the knowledge ;)
@NathanOsman orly ?
me likey

But but but pop tarts are bad for you!

well . . . so is high blood pressure from yelling at the screen when I see a question about some poor soul who deleted their Python3 . . .
But at least pop tarts taste sweet :3

Oh man. I'm going through my starred messages. We've certainly had some fun times here. <3 you all.
Well, most of you anyway ;p (jk)

@Seth Quickly flips through papers... "They are *vegetable* pop tarts."

3:25 AM
@Seth And there's more fun times to come :D

@Seth The bookmarks? :P

@NathanOsman nibbles cauliflower poptart
@NathanOsman no my starred messages: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/201/…

hahahahaha, @Nathan's body armor:

3:27 AM
@NathanOsman I remember that lol

Depends what I'm fighting.

@Serg yes! It's not gonna stop anytime soon :D

I doubt that would work with a pack of lions.

Spam?
@NathanOsman remember when Roland and Mochan were around?

I think one would be more inclined to consume that armor , instead of wearing it

3:33 AM
remember the family tree Mochan made? hahahahaha

@Seth Yes.
@Seth And Amith's hasty Gimp skills :P

@Seth I'd like to read that. Where?

@NathanOsman BWAHAHAA. yes, that was even better xD

@muru oh man. it's been going on for a few days now. Let me see if I can find the start.

@NathanOsman oh that wasn't the one I was thinking of. lemme see if I can find it..
here we go, it was Roland, not Amith apparently:

3:40 AM
O_o
I am your father!
Lol. Lol.
(Upon closer inspection it appears that... I am your mother?)

xD
hahahaa, I just realized that AbrahamVanHelpsing is married to smartboyhw xD

Isn't that modern-day RobotHumans?

yup xD

It's amazing how many of those users are still around.

I wonder what happened to smartboyhw, he was lead of the ubuntu studio Q/A team for a while and then he just... stopped. Gone. Maybe it's buried in some IRC logs somewhere.
@NathanOsman 8 still here and 7 gone :/

3:47 AM
Hey.
I just had an idea.

Actually, not sure I can count jrg as still here :(

Y'know that ad for @ChattyCapybaras?

@NathanOsman I like ideas!
@NathanOsman yeah?

I could make it dynamic.
So that it always shows the latest tweet.

ooh

3:48 AM
Kinda like the bounty one.
Go has packages for image manipulation.

ImageMagick could probably do it too
Go is cooler though :P

And the rest of the app is in Go.

@Seth got a moment for some cleanup work?

@muru if it's quick

The entire comment thread on askubuntu.com/a/169384/158442 is pointless

3:52 AM
I should be going out here in a few mins

Meaningless bickering over friendliness of Windows vs Ubuntu
Thanks!

@muru trimmed it down. Some of those comments seem useful though.
Kinda on the fence about the trio about why Windows uses local. Seems useful and relevant, but slightly off-topic.

Only Anatoly's comment seems useful

@Seth you seem to be hedging your bets with muru ;)

The "I tried this, didn't work" aren't that useful

3:56 AM
HI @muru :)
Some times people say "I tried this" because they are uncertain what they should say but feel they have to say something. Other times they know they didn't try hard enough and are making a flimsy excuse.
And the other 10% of the time they really did try something :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix all true, but it doesn't help anyone in the comment section of an answer unless it comes with something that can be acted on

We can't get hung up on judging the crossing the t's and dotting the i's. we just do the best we can with our knowledge and you @muru seems to know more than 99%.

Like this one:
But I already have UTC=no in my /etc/default/rcS. I have UTC=no and have the problem. — Green Aug 2 '13 at 5:34
That comment has no utility now. Anybody who faces the same issue should be trying another answer.

Q: How reading command line happens in Ubuntu

hrushiI am a newbie to Linux/ Ubuntu. As I was doing a project, I came to know about how command line can be read using ncurses and GNU's readline library. However I could not find either in Ubuntu (16.04). I am curious to know how Ubuntu processes the command as the user types? For eg: how does it det...

UTC as in Universal Time Code or whatever? You linked Green's user profile which is 52% overall not saying much about him.
I agree there are lots of stale answers floating around here though.
Sometimes I think we should purge everything < 2013.
I still get tripped up by someone editing question from 2011 on my cell phone which has limited display capabilities.
Nothing worse than people correcting spelling mistakes from 2011 showing up when it's on a long dead question.

4:05 AM
askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/681018 doesn't seem to be accurate for the sd part

sd definitely doesn't mean "secure digital" because a scuzzy disk (scsi) is no more secure than any other disk.

Q: What has taken all free space on my server?

KolaynI've barely installed something on my new droplet on Digital Ocean but the freespace in HDD of 20 Gb has evaporated already. 0% is left. Audio is almost universally borked on every platform out there.
I spent a good chunk of time trying to get Linux and Windows to play nice with recording from a microphone and loopback at the same time.
Audacity won't record from more than one source at the same time.
Ardour insists on exclusive access to the soundcard.
I might give Jack a try next time.

@NathanOsman on Windows voicemeeter banana is pretty nice for wierd shit.

I'll take a look.

Eh. No matter how much they resemble that remark, calling Someone an idiot isn't proper decorum.
Oh god. Doxxed himself o0

:s/ i[a-z]* / spammer /

5:00 AM
I like 'person'
Or 'wannabe haxxor'

Nah, this qualifies as spammer, since they did sent unsolicited email(s)

@JourneymanGeek That looks exactly perfect.
It supports DirectSound, WASAPI, MME... wow.

Hmm. Can I flag a user for spam if they send me unsolicited emails? Does the spam have to be contained to the SE network?

5:16 AM
@muru Since I don't know how to send you an email I would say it's a concern.

@NathanOsman learnt about it from one of the tested podcasts.

Cool.

5:36 AM
@muru there's precedent for this but it mostly had to do with threats and attacks, not just random emails. Is your email visible? What did the email say?

@Seth the email was just a dump of the question, and the PII from the comments.
My email would be visible on Github (where it has a + comment) and my site, but not on SE itself, AFAIK.

@muru hm. Well your email is on your website, and it's not a threat or attack so I'm not sure there is much we can do. Consider asking on meta though and we can forward up the chain.
Strange they emailed you though.

@Seth Indeed, I had no visible interaction with that post from what I can see
Anyway, time I nuked the contact page from my site, I suppose.

@muru you are the top user on the user's page though.

5:44 AM
Maybe I can convince someone in SE to show the weekly stats by default. Then WinEunuuchs2Unix will get the spam. :)

I wonder if it was even the OP that sent it to you. Did they include a link or just the text?

Plus their phone number, which I didn't include in the screenshot

Mr. Kusim.... "I am working for her"
I think we need to sic @Zanna on this spammer.

@muru yeah there's nothing we can do about that. He didn't violate any rules, he just annoyed you.
If you don't want the emails you'll just have to make your email less accessable. Sorry.
@KazWolfe doesn't seem like a spammer.

speaking of, time for an answer :D

5:55 AM
Yay answers :D

@Seth yeah, that's what I'm wondering, are there any rules about this

@muru there's precedent where if a user emails you and violates be nice wrt you on SE then we can act like it happened here, but not this. Just a typical result of having your email easy to get to, and having a lot of reputation (probably).

Q: Yet another offensive email from another new user on Stack Overflow

NeekuSo, I previously had asked a similar question regarding a harassing and offensive email I received from an S.O. user who didn't like to have high-quality posts! A: Use different address after every 20 requests

Kaz WolfeNope. What you're asking for is literally impossible. Due to the TCP protocol (which HTTP, and by proxy metasploit, uses), changing the source IP address will make it impossible for the server to send HTTP status messages back to you. Therefore, even if you do change the source IP address, it'l...

Lol that moment when you're trying to figure out why you can't upvote a comment, wondering if maybe the post is locked, then you realize you wrote the comment -.-

@Seth let me upvote it for you! :P
In other news, I cleaned up my site's git history, and reduced it from 36MB to 1.3MB.

6:06 AM
Wow lol
That's quite an improvement.

silently quipping the asker in the answer 10/10
also, wow smokey is doing a good job at nuking spam nowadays.

@KazWolfe yeah, it does

@NathanOsman my work has a drawer full of pop tarts and rice krispie treats.
remind me to send an image tomorrow
@JourneymanGeek it's annoying. i can't even get flags in anymore.

@KazWolfe Did you sign up for auto-flag?

6:10 AM
that, TBH is the biggest issue I see

@NathanOsman yep, i've cast a few on AU so far.

There's little point in organic spam flagging other than the strange stuff
and it makes it really hard to get marshall without auto flagging

that's why i got it before auto-flagging was fully rolled out

On the other hand, a good chunk of spam is pre-filtered already, and smokey still allows for a user to kill it off.

6:13 AM
also, fun fact. USB-C devices can cause kernel panics on Ubuntu.
(or at least my current dock)
On a related note... does anyone know how I can move closer to the kernel bleeding edge than the proposed PPAs?

@KazWolfe compile yourself :p
grow dat beard man

@Seth lol
@KazWolfe me? will editing help?

i can not mount to my driver

i also used ntfsfix

6:23 AM
@KazWolfe could be the dock. Or the devices

Now that you mention it.. I'm sure something could be edited on it.

@Zanna no, it was a joke

of course i fix some of my drive with this command but i don't know one of my volume doesn't open and get this error

@JourneymanGeek dock, probably. it's not fully compatible yet

Error mounting /dev/sda2 at /media/hussein/4C2229B82229A7C2: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000" "/dev/sda2" "/media/hussein/4C2229B82229A7C2"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount.

Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume

i also went to windows and shut it down

6:24 AM
@AndroidDev sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda2

did it
@KazWolfe

@AndroidDev normal shutfown on windows 10 is hybrid sleep

several times

there's a command for properly completely shutting down

then.... shrug
i tend to avoid ntfs for exactly this reason, lol

6:26 AM
@KazWolfe yeah me too... it's a joke that I edit everything
otherwise I'm pretty useless

but really...
> A startup utopeen in newdelhi.Employer is MR.Kusum from delhi itself.
"delhi itself." well, wow. that person is so important because they're in Delhi. I need to drop everything and help right now!

@Zanna eh. Good editing dosen't have a reward but it makes the site better ;)

@JourneymanGeek +2 rep

@JourneymanGeek thanks :)
> Zanna had 212 edit suggestions approved, and 7 edit suggestions rejected

@KazWolfe to a point ;p
+2 rep isn't all that much

6:29 AM

Q: ufw logs too much stuff, how can I disable that?

So I'm basically rewriting NitroShare in Java...
Before anyone starts throwing large composite poles at me, this is for Android.
I am not (I repeat not) using this as the reference implementation.
It's also a bit simpler in Java because Android is a (mostly) homogeneous platform.

Stack Overflow is down. Should be back momentarily.
We're back up now. Apologies for the downtime. Deployment related issue which we're still investigating.

11:22 AM
A scenario with a new feature (around Accept-Language) took Stack Overflow offline. We're drastically simplifying a lot of code now.

@JourneymanGeek @KazWolfe Uhhhmmmm... What the heck??? I never posted those chat messages
Did my account get hacked?
Hmmmm...
Oh, wait. I found the problem. There's another user with the same name, but without a space in between.
@Seth Can we so something about this?

You could change your name :S

@NathanOsman What about thisisnotarealwebsite.com ?
@Zanna I guess I could

or ask them to, nicely haha
can't think of anything else

@Zanna Your username is really creative BTW :)

There are dozens of users with that user name @AndroidDev :)
And as many again without the space.
That's only on SO, let alone network-wide.

1:54 PM
@terdon But what about AU?

Just one, but chat names are system-wide.

So should I change my name?

Not unless you want to. Just don't be surprised if we get random visitors with the same name as you.

@AndroidDev haha thanks ;)

@AndroidDev erf. Looks like a varient of the bob problem.

Q: How do I ping the right bob?

Journeyman Geek We have two bobs at the moment. Bob (with the fox avatar) is a long time user, and bob, with the green avatar. I'd like to ping Bob, without bothering bob with my pings. I see two ways to do this - It's trivial for me to get the username - so could we have a way to ping a user by user id numbe...

The bob problem
Also known as the Tim Problem I suppose

lol no answer!

Just tab complete the name people!
No wait, what? Is this new?
Dang!

hello :)

tab completion is confused

@Hizqeel Hi Hizqeel - nice to meet you ! :)
@Zanna waves back to you ! :)

Didn't look :)

2:25 PM
@terdon I guess not ... hahaha ... good afternoon terdon ! :)

@cl-netbox She is doing well and in a good health

@Hizqeel Well, that's great news ... glad to read it ! :)

:)

@Hizqeel Are you running ubuntu 16.04.2 and opted in to the hwe stack or are you running ubuntu 16.10 ? In case yes - newest kernel 4.8.0-39 already installed ? :)

@cl-netbox I am running 16.04.1 :)

2:38 PM
@Hizqeel just execute sudo apt-dist-upgrade to upgrade to 16.04.2 and if you want to get the backported drivers from 16.10 and kernel 4.8 - then afterwards run sudo apt-get install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 to opt-in to the hwe stack ! :) More information -> wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

@cl-netbox I was looking at the same page, So you are on 16.10?

@Hizqeel I recommend to do it ... many bug fixes and improvements ... I supported a friend who has 16.04 and it worked flawlessly without any issues ... and yes, I'm always running the latest stable edition, so as of now 16.10 ! :)

@cl-netbox Then i will do that tonight :)

@Hizqeel good idea ! :) please report back the results tomorrow ... :)

Just curious, do we have any professional python developers in our midst?

2:48 PM
@cl-netbox But i will not upgrade to 16.10 right now

@JacobVlijm With me you have exactly the opposite ! :D Good afternoon Jacob ! :)

Hey @cl-netbox!

@JacobVlijm hey .... How are doing o/ :)
@JacobVlijm Rails Developer at your service :p :)

@Hizqeel no - you misunderstood ... upgrade to 16.04.2 and opt-in to the hwe stack to get the goodness of 16.10 ! :) Simply execute : sudo apt update | udo apt-dist-upgrade | sudo reboot | sudo apt-get install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 | sudo reboot ! :)

@Hizqeel Hey Hizqeel!

2:54 PM
@Hizqeel Too bad that we can't correct typos after a few minutes ... so once again the commands :
sudo apt update | sudo apt dist-upgrade | sudo reboot | sudo apt install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 | sudo reboot

@Hizqeel odd question, probably no one can answer. Thing is, I get messages on a regular base for job offers in python (full time). Since I am a musician, I usually thank them for the effort, but no. One is very persistent however and asks me if I can take a job for even one day per week. Writing scripts here, I feel quite secure, but since I am a total autodidact however, I feel kind of .... nervous... to do the same outside. No clue how my level is in an absolute sense.

Oli
@JacobVlijm Yeah
