Ohh it's a 500 point bounty more points than I made in a month and I'm in first place with an answer that is not an answer. I'm so hopeful yet so skeptical at my chances at the same time: askubuntu.com/questions/880965/…

why is it impossible to get Windows to accept any form of unicode input? really?!

12:09 AM
Windows uses a different character set than Linux even with file names from the limited amount I know about OS internals.

So easy in Linux.. Ctrl+Shift+U.

Q: KDE's run command is broken when using multiple monitors

monnefWhen running run command (shortcut or from desktop menu) it only works on one monitor. On all other monitors no window is shown (it is working, "just" window position seems to be broken, when I don't see suggestions it is kinda useless). In its options are just items which use for searching, not...

hi
i have a ubuntu 16.04 server
and want to access my server file via a ftp software like filezilla
how can i connect it
should i have to install ftp on it

and then make a user and pass because i hear ftp server too much
it seems that the vsftpd already installed on sever but how can i connect to it @muru

You don't know how to use Filezilla? Or you tried and it isn't working?

i tried and get this
Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Insecure server, it does not support FTP over TLS
Response: 331 Please specify the password.
that i specify it
in host i set my server ip
and using the username and password that i use to connect to server via ssh
the interesting part is that when i use ls command on my server terminal it doesn't show me the list of file
why
list of file and directory

@Serg I coded Minesweeper on my CASIO graphing calculator once. It was horribly slow though because my model only allowed you to interpret BASIC scripts, not to install compiled apps.

Hey @cl-netbox How are you? :)

Hello ! :)
@Hizqeel Better today - thank you ... got my main machine back from repair. What about you Hizqeel, how are you doing ? Good morning to you ! :)
@ByteCommander Good morning ! :) graphics still running flawlessly ?

@cl-netbox Thats good..! I am fine and Good Morning (Noon Here) :)

Hey @cl-netbox, @Hizqeel! Yes, everything fine here, and you?

@Hizqeel Glad to read that you are okay ... and then : Good afternoon to you ! :)

@JacobVlijm o/ Hi

yes, it was automatically upgraded after you applied all available updates, but if you want to use kernel 4.8 and the backported drivers from ubuntu 16.10, you have to opt-in to the hwe stack. By the way, this is what I'm running on my fedora workstation :

[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 25 (Twenty Five)
[cl@cl-fw-1 ~]$ uname -a
Linux cl-fw-1 4.9.10-200.fc25.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Feb 15 23:28:59 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

11:31 AM
@cl-netbox I like the way it spells out "Fedora release 25 (Twenty Five) " so you don't think 25 is really "four million three hundred and forty-eight thousand six hundred and sixty three" when you read the two digits :p BTW do you know anything about loading nodes in MAAS using grub? : askubuntu.com/questions/880965/…

11:49 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Hi ! :) no, unfortunately not ... I never tested MAAS. :)

I wonder if sending a feature request as I did in my answer on that question was the right thing to do?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes, why not ? +1 ! :)

shhhh on plus oney thingy....jacob might go ape again hehe
thanks though :)
I'm not sure if launch pad is appropriate place for feature requests but I saw another MAAS feature request there so I though why not?

11:56 AM
^ I rest my case :)

^^ You could consult to NSA :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I really hope not ... @JacobVlijm misunderstood something yesterday when I said "please wait a minute" ... I said it because I had a support session at the time when you asked me for nvidia recommendation ... I meant it takes a few minutes to check for the drivers which fit best and to write the commands to install them ! :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix He can feel us.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You're welcome ! :) I saw that you might get the bounty ... good luck for that ! :)

@cl-netbox I understand totally. However I've got to shower and get ready for work so I'll have to continue conspiracy theories and stuff after work :)

@cl-netbox yeah, I reread that later. Appologies for the misunderstood line.

@Hizqeel Can I get that image in a black flex fit baseball cap? I'm going to patch my rm wrapper script to not allow / as a parameter :)

Beware that you can still run it on /* instead to bypass all restrictions

Forgetting ~ or . in front of / is more likely than accidentally putting *after / but my wrapper will stop anything beginning with / like the root plus /etc, /home, /bin, etc. This was asked on a question to password protect rm by a user where I already posted my script but I'll update it there.
Good ole Thomas got 28 upvotes for saying you shouldn't do it. I got 1 vote for making it possible :p

But /tmp/something also starts with / - do you require absolute paths to have at least 2 levels then or how?

I'll never remove /tmp... don't think I can anyway when system is running as programs put stuff there all the time.

No, that was not my point.
Every absolute path starts with /
So do you forbid all absolute paths?

12:48 PM
oh you mean like /home/user/Documents/Deleteme

And your current directory could be /

I will take your great points in mind when I revise the script tonight :)

You should probably use something like readlink or realpath or whatever it was called to convert whatever path you get into an absolute path and then check that you have a path which is at least 2 levels deep or so

Yes your current directory could be / (which I never use) and you could do "rm bin" and the wrapper won';t catch it.
I put your last comments in my to-do list @ByteCommander thank you!

Therefore use the realpath (?) command to always get absolute paths from the input.
But check how it works with symlinks!
Could be that realpath interprets symlinks and then operates on the original file instead of the link.
You must check that first, I'm not sure.

12:52 PM
Thanks. Great points. I have to run to work now. See you and everyone else later :)

@Hizqeel I always thought it is the general chat room for discussions about ubuntu and linux topics. :)

1:52 PM
@cl-netbox It is indeed

@Hizqeel If is not too often, sure you can ... but in the last time it became more a room about critics (VTC here / VTC there) ... so it would be nice if that calms down a bit ... :) Please note that I don't mean you especially ! :) Just said it because you asked ... :)

@cl-netbox I asked this from everyone here :) as General soo Welcome your opinion :)

@Hizqeel When someone posts a rant for example, I really appreciate the notification, because that's not what we want here ... in such cases I also flag or vote to close it immediately ! :)

working on a 16.04 Ubuntu(64 bit) and using R studio on it. I am trying to run a code and while loading a certain file i am getting this error:

i have tried all the suggestions on this post unable to load shared object wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 but nothing seems to work. i know it is a cross compatibility issue but i cannot modify the file. is there a way to open this file in a 64 bit program? or any other solution?

@Hizqeel that's not answer, but is it rude ? :)

can anyone help me regarding my query?

@cl-netbox No I don't think that is rude but NAA

@Rehan Hi ! :) I would like to help you, unfortunately I can't ... I don't know what R Studio is supposed to do. :)
@Hizqeel true :)

Probably it's an IDE for coding in the R language - but I have no idea about it either

2:07 PM
yes @ByteCommander..@cl-netbox it's an IDE for running R language ...

@cl-netbox this will help you in understanding my problem better

@Hizqeel It doesn't actually make much difference to the mods. We see the flag, if there are multiple flags it just helps us see that multiple users considered something flag-worthy. But that doesn't really make much of a difference.

Got it

So pasting here doesn't really accomplish anything very useful.
Nothing wrong with it either, but it makes more sense for things that the community can deal with: voting to close, flagging as spam etc.

2:19 PM
@Rehan is it a 32-bit thing you are working on ?

@Hizqeel hilareous. That guy must have seen this movie

@cl-netbox yea and my system is 64 bit

@JacobVlijm hahaha :D

@Rehan aha ... as I assumed before : wrong version - you need 64-bit ! :)

Q: How can I break my computer's audio?

EMBLEMFor reasons I won't get into, I need to ensure that my computer: Cannot play audio Can only be made to play audio again by re-installing the operating system Can otherwise function completely normally I'm running Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.

2:23 PM
@cl-netbox but i cannot modify the file

@Rehan because : 'Cfunc.so': wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32

@AndroidDev not sure why?

@cl-netbox i want to reproduce the results of the file without changing the file
i don't want to modify it

@Rehan how did you install R studio?

@Rehan IMHO it is a conflict between 32-bit and 64-bit ... start there to solve the problem ... unfortunately I can't help you further with it, I don't have any experience with R Studio at all. :)

2:29 PM
@cl-netbox thanks for the help! @terdon i did it through deb package but now i have removed it and i am installing it 32 bit versions of R and Rstudio

@JacobVlijm Because it's impossible to do what OP wants without tons of hacks to the OS

Q: Remove software and PPA's entirely

Daniel ZvirI have a lot of software installed, from various sources, and I would like to start using Flatpaks instead of PPA's. @terdon it is pretty simple to do though
just create a script that sets mute every time it is unmuted D: D:

Doesn't look very ubuntuy...

I'm having a bit of graphic problems
I'm running ubuntu gnome 16.04 on a schenkar laptop with GTX 1060 on it
Whenever the machine wakes up, either from sleep or just blackened screen, the graphics are all glitched
If I do manage to log back in, the desktop background is glitched, but the rest seems OK (even playing videos etc)
But often I won't even be able to log back in, it just wouldn't respond.

8:30 PM
I'd VTC askubuntu.com/q/885885/367990 as no repro, because user thinks he got hacked and asks what might have happened, but already nuked the installation from orbit.

@MadaraUchiha Are you using Noveau or the proprietary Nvidia driver?

@NathanOsman proprietary

Hmm...

Noveau wouldn't boot last time I checked.

Like this?

8:31 PM
@ByteCommander Yes, similar.

Unfortunately, I'm the AMD guy.
I don't really have much experience with Nvidia.

I got that after waking from suspend with nvidia-378 drivers from the graphics-drivers PPA.

I thought it sounded familiar.

Purging that one and installing nvidia-367 instead solved the problem for me.

@ByteCommander Exactly.
@ByteCommander Will try, thanks

8:32 PM
There must have been updates to those which didn't go well.

inb4 HALP I HAZ NO GRAPHICS

The 375 also used to work, but started glitching after a recent update.

@MadaraUchiha HALP I HAZ NO GRAPHICS
I actually might not though on my phone

Well, the 375 booted to low-graphics mode (which even crashed, most of the times) after switching it to use the nvidia GPU instead of the intel onboard.
So you're actually not as far away from HALP I HAZ NO GRAPHICS as you might hope...
I've been there.

@ByteCommander correction
I'm already running 367

8:41 PM
Hrrm....

I thought I was totally up to date, I was not.

Then I guess you throw a dice and try another one... until you find one that Just Works™
That's what I did at least.

I see, lol

Also: are you using any PPAs (for Xorg, etc.)?

8:57 PM

@MadaraUchiha I just found out that nvidia-367 from the graphics-drivers PPA just got updated to become a transitional package that actually installs nvidia-375 under the hood. No wonder didn't it work for you, and the glitches on my side came back as well. Purging the graphics-drivers PPA now and taking nvidia-367 from the Ubuntu repo (cc @cl-netbox)
