@cl-netbox Edited and upvoted and voted to reopen question...
@cl-netbox :) I dunno...

@Fabby Thank you very much ! :)
@Fabby Me too ... :D

Me neither... ;)
off to work!

@Fabby I also voted to reopen it ! :)
@Fabby Have fun ... hopefully ! :)
@Zanna : Can you please vote to reopen the question as well -> askubuntu.com/questions/873333/cant-resize-partitions-in-ubuntu/… ? :)

@cl-netbox personally I think the question is still unclear, as we don't know what the error message is

@Zanna I think he means that resizing gets refused ... as I often told many users : This does not work from within a running system ! :)
@Zanna FYI : these deployment topics are those about which I am having "some really advanced" experience and knowledge ... such as @Serg has with scripting ... so the question is fully valid and my answer very useful ... :)

10:17 AM
@Seth hahahahhaah nice

11:00 AM
Hey @terdon Good morning ! :) I am missing something ...

Yes?

@terdon The bounty -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34777472#34777472 ... I can't see it -> askubuntu.com/questions/871978/… ... maybe an issue with the SE system I am facing ? :D :D :D

@cl-netbox Better?

@terdon thought perl folks like you might appreciate reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/5oyl15/…

@terdon hahaha ... yes ... now I can see it ... thank you very much terdon ! :)

11:05 AM
@terdon I have an annoying user :P

@edwinksl heh :)
@cl-netbox You're welcome.
@Rinzwind So? I have hundreds. ;)
What's up?

@terdon I am glad that we solved the problem and the system is running properly ! :)

Q: Enable CD-ROM means How to re-enable

Vikram JadhavI disabled CD-ROM for security reasons but i need to re-enable it again for use. How can i re-enable it? I want to enable it again but i tried everything but still nothing is working..

@terdon ^
here is a list of a few of his PM's:
@Rinzwind Hello Sir, will you please help me to block the cdrom with commands which are working !!! — Vikram Jadhav 4 hours ago
oops
he claims 9 times command does not work and cuz I removed my answer ( :D ) he now claims he cant eject his cd :P
@terdon well you are a mod so that's understandable >:)

@VikramJadhav stop this! The people here are all volunteers. If they can help, they will but do not insist like this. Be patient and wait. Even better, edit your question and show that you tried the commands Rinzwind already gave you and what happened when you tried. But, whatever you do, stop leaving repetitive comments like this. — terdon ♦ 17 secs ago

@Rinzwind edit the answer ... tell him to use a screw driver and a big hammer ... @Fabby would do it ... :D :D :D

11:16 AM
@terdon thanks. what annoys me most is that I asked him to do something and completly ignores that.

Yeah.

he still has not shown the version of eject he uses :=D
but I am sure the eject in Ubuntu in 2009 already was able to lock the device

@Rinzwind I would expect that to depend on hardware though.

@Rinzwind this behavior I observed many many times ... :)

@terdon nope.
it blocks a udev rule if I remember correctly

11:24 AM
@Rinzwind No? I'm pretty sure I've seen drives that ignored eject, where eject couldn't actually do anything. And I know I've seen drives that didn't understand eject -t (or whatever the close tray command was)

" If eject does not work, it is
most likely a limitation of the kernel driver for the device and not
the eject program itself.
"
from the manual :=)

Considering that this seems to be a sysadmin with next to no knowledge (so, probably working for a public university/school) and, based on the name, probably in India, I wouldn't be surprised if they're running >10 year-old computers.
@Rinzwind Yeah, that's what they all say. :)
No, but that's my point: some drives don't support it.

from the manual @terdon ;=-)

Or some drivers, if you prefer.

some kernels >:)
I blame Linus

11:26 AM
kernel driver for the device
I blame the hardware.
The hardware manufacturers, anyway. Point is, you can't be certain that eject can deal with the drive.
The best solution would probably be to remove the driver, whatever that is.

yeah was my last comment :D
copy /dev/cdrom to another location, remove it and restore it when needed _O-
bit drastic sure D:
but then again
I have to ask WHY did he post the SECOND question?
cuz that one would imply it DID work :P
and another PM D::::::::::::::

Noob question: will 18.04 support repositories? I was reading this, and it says all Snaps-based

@Gallifreian yes.
the base system will be snap based.

The base system?

when you install Ubuntu it will probably use snaps.
when you install software it will use snaps
but you can add repo's yourself and install from there
and those could also be snaps :)

11:32 AM
@terdon I should be offended, but I'm totally agreeing.

But why, are snaps better in soe fundamental way?

@Gallifreian cause NIH ;p

@Gallifreian Both versions will be included : apt repositories and snaps ! :)

@JourneymanGeek huh?

and snaps will be the default :=)

11:33 AM
I do also think the apps are containerised somehow

@JourneymanGeek Offended? What I said would apply equally well to Greece! Public universities pretty much everywhere have crappy old computers.

@Gallifreian not invented here
@terdon oh the bit about indian sysadmins
probably underpaid too.

sandboxed yes :=D
But the idea about that is not security but easier to update (you basically replace the container to update a specific software)

From what I understand, snaps are identical to .exe and .mse in the way they include some dependencies.

F00D!

11:35 AM
@Gallifreian ehhhh, not quite

@JourneymanGeek I didn't mean Indian sysadmins don't know their stuff, I was just suggesting that a random public school in India is very likely to have old machines.

@Gallifreian no

@terdon I was completely suggesting (many) indian sysadmins don't know their stuff ;p
but I'm currently feeling entirely misanthropic about the entire IT industry from and of the subcontinent

Heh. That may well be true, but I don't have much (any) experience with Indian sysadmins.

or indian IT folk.

11:36 AM
@terdon Isn't @jokerdino one of them ? :D

A snap is a fancy zip file containing an application together with its dependencies, and a description of how it should safely be run on your system, especially the different ways it should talk to other software.

@cl-netbox @jokerdino is a geek, not a professional IT person ;p
(I'm ethnic indian, which is part of the joke)
@Gallifreian windows has this thing called dll hell, and sxs...
a snap essentially is a container with almost static dependancies

What about stuff sharing dependencies? Isn't this what made repos great in the first place?

(I just got turned down for an entry level sysadmin job, with training, for no apparent reason, and another company was trying to lowball me badly and was insulting. Both seem to be from the subcontinent, so I'm pretty mad)
@Gallifreian well, the whole "those who forget the past..."
though they do seem to dedup askubuntu.com/questions/787149/…
I've seen worse, but I'm not sure if my NDA covers that ;)

That's a relief
Last question then - what are the pros and cons of upgrading to 17.04 vs waiting for 18.04?

11:47 AM
eh, I tend to run LTS, otherwise, depends

Guess I'll just wait
Last I checked some packages hadn't even made it to 16.04

@terdon starred!

:)

12:05 PM
@Rinzwind and a duplicate as well: askubuntu.com/questions/874114/…
(duped the first onto the second)

Hi!
Wait, there is 17.04??? @JourneymanGeek Is it an LTS?

you should check ;p

OH, non LTS, Just boring. I use LTS. When does the next one come out?
Hello?
Can someone review my edit? askubuntu.com/questions/461417/…

@UbuntuUser no there is a 17.04 alpha or beta. No 17.04 yet

@Rinzwind Thanks!
I prefer LTS!

12:18 PM
Mainly because it isn't April '17 yet.

I dont. I love almost-bleeding-edge

@cl-netbox You're green again for me... Even with a different browser and no addons. Going to rant on Meta Stack Exchange about it...

@Serg thanks - the OP is confusing playlists with radio stations - playlists are songs ... radio stations cannot be exported via that plugin. Bit busy - feel free to knock up an answer ... I will eventually get around to it.

Q: One user's chat icon is sometimes displaying as default gravatar for me

Byte CommanderIn Ask Ubuntu chat, there is one user (cl-netbox) of which the user icon is recently displaying wrongly most of the time: His icon on all sites id a blue square with the white letters cl. "Linux is a mash-up of dinosaur parts and new animal parts!"
Hi @Serg

@UbuntuUser hi

But then Windows is a mammoth hamburger that became undead...

morning chat ! o/

morning derpwolf :P

1:23 PM
@ByteCommander Haha! Funny!

Derping my way to work. On train

I'm trying to resurrect a ancient beast via VMM!!! Evil Scientist laugh!

Had to leave my laptop because the damn Quartus still haven't downloaded.
5 Gb total, at 3.8 Gb so far after 5 hours
The freaking academic software is usually huge and bloated. At least i hope it will install properly

Yeah, I know...

I'm trying to get 95 on my VMM, 2000, xp, xp pro, vista, and newest, windows 10 (YUCK)

1:28 PM
Just had to download Microsoft Project a few days ago for project management classes. Over 2 GB for a piece of software than can sum up times and prices and move around a few bars...

Not to mention that it took at least as long to install as it took to download...

xkcd.com/995 HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

@ByteCommander literally Xcel spreadsheet

1:33 PM
also . . . it's 6:30 . . .my work starts at 7:30 . . . i got here too early o.o

@Serg Do you live in Europe?

@UbuntuUser USA

@Serg Oh, yeah! The earth spins the other way!

Yup, it sure spins, ain't flat

Yep!

1:40 PM
Flat things can spin too (baking pancakes)

@JacobVlijm Yeah, but the earth is not flat.

pancakes sound delicious though

.@Serg I prefer cured meats!

@UbuntuUser i do too, but my favorite is noodles. Especially Asian noodles. i used to work in a Vietnamese restaurant, and we get shift meal for free. So, guess what i was having each time ? noodles

@Serg Oh, yum yum! I like wraps too!

1:47 PM
me too

however, are you really baking pancakes, as in cooking them in an oven?

How to add a custom compiled version as a systemd service under Debian 8?

You know, someone who's hungry should not come to AU . We're constantly talking about food

@Zanna Nono, more like this: Below Serg :)

@blade19899 somehow i doubt anyone who can answer is in chat right now. Post a question on Unix & Linux, that'll be smarter way

1:51 PM

@JacobVlijm pan frying ?
yeah , Ukrainian folks do that too

Hey @UbuntuUser ! :) All VMs running ? :D

@Serg Aha, is that the correct translation of pannekoeken?

Hi @JacobVlijm ! :) Hi @Serg ! :) All scripts up and running ? :D

Hey @cl-netbox yeah, I hope so :)

1:56 PM
@JacobVlijm hahaha ... in your case I'm quite sure they are ... in @Serg case not quite so ... depends on the percentage of vodka in coffee I guess ... :D :D :D

@JacobVlijm seems like

I've never seen another way of making any kind of pancake than something more or less like that (uncooked batter placed on flat unenclosed heating surface)

@cl-netbox only had one cup today, so i guess not enough to keep them running,haha

It is remarkably true though that with a glass of wine (1) coding tends to go remarkably smooth

@Serg Please have a look at the issue @ByteCommander is facing ... don't you have a sript for him ? :D

1:58 PM
Which issue?

@ByteCommander you don't know yet, but you have issues :)

@ByteCommander that one -> meta.stackexchange.com/questions/290050/… Good afternoon ! :)

@JacobVlijm No, I have too many issues to know which one was meant.

:) need to run, see you later.

@cl-netbox And how can Serg help with that?

2:00 PM
enjoy your pancakes @JacobVlijm :)

@ByteCommander I get the same problem now, it's not just you. Noticed it yesterday and it's happening again now.

@cl-netbox @ByteCommander yeah, it's probably out of my league

@ByteCommander no idea ... he is the scripting wizard of AU alongside with @JacobVlijm ... they write hacking scripts for and against everything - right @Serg ? :D :D :D

Everyone ready to set their clocks back 300 years?

also, feck, my id card isn't working, so i can't open the lab

2:04 PM
@TheXed My neighbour's notebook (Win 10) just listed an update installed on 1.1.1601. So... why not 400 years, while we're at it??

@terdon I see my avatar correctly everywhere on AU. :)

@ByteCommander because it is estimated that When Trump is sworn in, that the world will lose about 300 years worth of forward progress...

@cl-netbox Yes, this is a chat issue and, apparently, only affecting some of us. I am very glad it's not my job to debug this :)

@terdon yes ... sometimes little issues are taking way more time to get fixed than the wildest disaster recovery ! :D

i have to probably run to another lab accross campus ,feck

2:10 PM
@Zanna Thanks! I will

@TheXed Hopefully it won't happen ... :) Hi ! :)

@terdon And I am glad I'm no longer alone ^_^

God, the help desk is utterly useless

this whole two factor authentication is starting to piss me off
anybody thought that if my phone is stolen i can't sign into my gmail ? huh, Google ?

3:29 PM
Step one in google's instructions for recovering account: "Sign in to your account with your username and password." What kind of weed you morons are smoking ? If I cannot sign in on a computer because "this device isn't trusted" , I cannot sign in and fill out any form

Hi @Hizqeel ! :) Good afternoon ! :) How are you doing ? :)

This morning seems to squeeze more nerves out of me than necessary. First my damn ID card, now I barely accessed my Gmail. I better not touch any questions - I'll probably flip out on OPs

@cl-netbox o/ Hi :) Good After noon :) I am fine having a hectic day today..! What about you ?

@Hizqeel I'm fine too ... Thanks ! :) Just finished editing a question ... took some time ... what causes the hectic ? :)

3:41 PM
@cl-netbox I have the room to get VM up and running!
@cl-netbox But there is a problem....

@cl-netbox Good to hear about that :) Shooping :P

@Hizqeel ICK!

@UbuntuUser ? What ?

Any English grammar experts in here ? Or at least native speakers ?

@Serg ME!

3:43 PM
How does one disable OOM in Xenial?

@Serg English is my first language!

@UbuntuUser Ok. Question: "Not only it possess" or "Not only is possesses" ?

@Serg I think you have a typo... but the second one if the 'is' was and 'it'.

Yep, that was a typo

@Serg Haha!

@Serg hahha

@UbuntuUser Ok, what about this one: It doesn’t only possess a hundred-year history, elegance and romance, but also enjoys the fame as the “Oriental Champs-Elysees
I need eye bleach and brain destresser
I've lost 15 minutes of work this morning because of the stupid card, which means I lost my money. It's 9.5/4 , but still it's BS of A

@Serg Grammer is my least favorite topic, but I think it makes sense, also if you're a kid trying to get me to do their homework, you should feel guilty. That is what got Trump elected in the first place.
Mind if I do an experiment?

@UbuntuUser I'm 27, so far from being a kid, and it's not homework. I'm editing a power point right now
@UbuntuUser Depends on what that experiment involves

@Serg seeing if there are length rules to a chat message.

There are

I just found out!

3:53 PM
Eh, just let me get my python shell up and running

@UbuntuUser Which one ?

@cl-netbox Ah you're here! Well, VMM says I can't execute any iso file. ANY OF THEM!

@UbuntuUser Yes I am ... hello CUU ! :)

So how do I make an ISO file executable?

you don't
>_>

3:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek Are you talking to me?

@UbuntuUser I don't know what you mean ? This is not Windows ... an ISO file has to be booted or mounted ! :) I already explaind this to you yesterday ! :)

do we have a chili555 for audio? >:)

why in the heck this computer won't open chrome's python extension ?

@UbuntuUser eh. what would that executed?

3:57 PM
@cl-netbox that is my problem, but how do I choose a usb stick? I only get a folder.

did you mean a self extracting ISO?

@Rinzwind what is that?

you don't use a usb stick to boot a VM
we went through this yesterday

@cl-netbox hey you -can- create an executable, hide the ISO in it and then have it extract the contents over a partition :=D Dangerous yes. but possible

@JourneymanGeek Sorry, I'll mount an ISO, and boot that.

3:59 PM
@UbuntuUser Unfortunately you are speaking in riddles ... it gets more and more hard to understand and help you with all this ... :) Please do learn some basics ... please ! :)

I would do that too ;-)
If you use virtualbox you can store the ISO on disk and point to it. Vbox will mount it for you

I'm sorry for all the trouble. I'm newish at linux, and have a hard time figuring stuff out.

@Rinzwind : Please don't complicate the situation ... we had an hourly long discussion about this yesterday (roll back the chat) ... he uses qemu and virt-manager ... :)

@cl-netbox that's my goal in life though >:-D

@UbuntuUser You don't need to be sorry ... just do what I told you : one thing after the other ... not jumping from one topic to the next within seconds ! :)

4:03 PM
multi-tasking <3

@Rinzwind hahaha ... you are sooo cute ... :D
@UbuntuUser : The links to my answers I gave you yesterday ... did you read them ? :) When you understood the content and used the instructions, you might be a bit further up on the road ... :)

hi

Can i say "Oversized display" instead of "Huge display" ?
It's kind of a formal presentation, and "Huge display" sounds a little too informal

context would help

@cl-netbox I had mounted an ISO and copyed all of the files, the @JourneymanGeek told me I couldn't and yeh.

@UbuntuUser So ? :)

I'll redo that part since I used my USB and formated it.

@UbuntuUser So ? :) What are you trying to accomplish now ? :)

something's not right with this computer. It doesn't let me run any python IDE for chrome

4:27 PM
@Serg maybe you killed it with a "itsy bitsy sergy script" ? :D :D :D

@cl-netbox O_o I didn't even get to type a script yet
@JourneymanGeek context is simple: using large scale displays for advertisement on the streets

Lol, the inauguration live stream on youtube has more disklikes than likes

Oh, it's livestreamed ?

@Serg I believe you have answered that already askubuntu.com/q/874221/367990

4:36 PM
@Serg - Did you ever recover anything from your SSD?
Or did it kick the bucket?

@AndroidDev It actually works alright as usual. I'm not quite sure what's going on

@cl-netbox eating a pizza.

They're reading way too many Christian prayers there

@UbuntuUser Bon Apetite ! :)

Probably intentionally trolling Obama ?

4:41 PM
@cl-netbox No lol!
@cl-netbox I'm trying to mount an ISO file and put it on a USB as on your answer.

@UbuntuUser good idea ... alternatively mount the pizza to your mouth ! :D :D :D

@cl-netbox I'm not eating pizza. I wishh though! :)

@UbuntuUser Maybe I should go back to school and re-learn my English ... must have misunderstood this -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/34908278#34908278 ;P

:p
@cl-netbox Actually he is eating a pizza while not eating a pizza :p

Somebody just walked in and asked about a room number which isn't on the building plan. Rooms completely missing
O_o

4:49 PM
@Hizqeel ah ... yes ... that's the way it might supposed to be read ... thanks a lot ... saves me some money ... no English lessons needed fortunately ! :D

"Ultra bright display which is available in sunlight" Would it be better to use "Ultra bright display which is viewable in sunlight" ?

@cl-netbox hahahah :D :D :D

@Hizqeel :D
