7:00 PM
(In voice of wonder) Woooooooooow.

that's LILO boot manager

What in the world is that.

wonder why it is hangoing

What do I do now?

*hanging

7:00 PM
wait forever

try "debian"
I thought it automajically booted for me

I've got 32 MB of RAM allocated to the VM.
Maybe it doesn't like the video card...

gasp

not usually a problem.
wierd
try rebooting
host+r

Same thing.

7:02 PM
dunno what to say

@terdon Is an Hp Envy X360, Network Controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 [8086:095a] (rev61)

@Haguilar91 Don't tell me, put it in your question.

Ubuntu says, Wifi is Off but it never turns on, It comes with a -17 driver and the wireless page from Intel offers a -16 driver, same issue.

7:04 PM
@terdon Sorry, let me redo the question.

I may get better luck with qemu...

maybe. I used virtualbox

@JamesTobin Do you have the settings handy?

no sorry
I gave up on the thing :(
I got pretty far though. Just the initial setup simply bonked
It wouldnt recognize my mouse
and I couldnt get out of it
see if you can even get that far though lol

does anybody understand about how x handles input drivers
who i can talk to

7:09 PM
awkward silence

D:

lol

Good day, I have an Hp Envy X360 , I'm using Gnome Ubuntu 16.04.1, When trying to connect Network Manager says the WiFi is off you turn it on, and never turns on, These are the info I got: Network Controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 [8086:095a] (rev61)
And dmesg return this: [ 6.589899] Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux
[ 6.589901] Copyright(c) 2003- 2015 Intel Corporation
[ 6.591133] iwlwifi 0000:01:00.0: Unsupported splx structure
[ 6.624825] media: Linux media interface: v0.10
[ 6.747978] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 6.794945] acer_wmi: Acer Laptop ACPI-WMI Extras
[ 6.801600] input: Acer BMA150 accelerometer as /devices/virtual/input/input9
[ 6.906826] iwlwifi 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7265D-19.ucode failed with error -2

This isn't the main site

That is a very common problem. see askubuntu.com/questions/801074/… was where I had same issue.
One way to fix it would be to try 14.04 because it seems to work better with wifi drivers :o

7:13 PM
I see, I'm asking here, because I have 2 weeks researching and there's not a solution for the issue, I tried Fedora at one point but the same, I saw like 3 people with the same issue as mine, and there are not solutions :S Any help would be highly appreciated.

check out my link

@Haguilar91 We seem to be having trouble communicating. Please post your question on the main site.
That way it will be seen by many more users and you might get an answer. Chat is not for tech support, really.

So sorry for that, I did not know, I'll post it on the main site, sorry folks.

np@all

It works!

7:19 PM
nice :)

Floppy!

@JamesTobin Your solution worked out great!!! Thanks! I just saw the post, Do you mind me referring that post, for the other people that has the same issue?

@Haguilar91 go right ahead :)
also upvote it :D

7:23 PM
that's older than the one I used
so you need to do one at a time
do 1 first
hope it is not too different from the one I used. It is definitely older.

Yup.

this is how far some idiot winblows users will go
bet Bill gates wished he had that in the windows 98 demo in 1998

@NathanOsman That's a really nice explanation actually
wouldn't expect that from Debian 1.0
1996 o-O
@Seth another Note 7 giveaway androidcentral.com/…
Oh but it's a T-Mobile Note 7
hope that's OK

I can change that ;)

good afternoon people!

7:29 PM
good afternoon

how are you all doing?

very well thanks @IanC how about your good self?

@Zanna I'm good!! Finally graduated, had some good time on my parents house in my days off :)

So far so good...

now back to the working routine!

7:32 PM
@NathanOsman screenshots if you get it

congratulations :)

welcome back @zanna
good job @ian :)

Thanks!! Wasn't really excited about the graduation ceremony, but gotta say the vibe there was really good :D
and I could see some friends from my college fraternity, a bit brief but it was fun!

sounds like a lot of fun :)

@Zacharee1 Just making the bootdisk now. Installation finished.

7:35 PM
@nathan for what?

For booting the system.
Apparently it doesn't install a bootloader to the hard disk MBR.

darn wrong place sorry

wow I'm glad your graduation was fun... my first graduation was so dull I don't remember anything (I've got a nice photo with my class though) but the second was was kind of awesome @IanC

Hrm...
It's stuck in a bootloop with that floppy...

@NathanOsman funny.. I was able to do it on the next version

7:39 PM
And it won't boot from HD.

buzz
that's wierd

Aha. I can still manually boot to the HD with LILO.

@Zanna Nice! I think I took more pictures during the graduation than in the whole year!! My smiling muscles were giving up by the end of it hahaha
what are your graduations in?

We haz a login prompt!

what!!!
gee. that must not have installed anything...

7:41 PM

try buzz.

nothing good... contemporary photographic arts and science in education @IanC

@ian what were yours in?

@NathanOsman can you install a DE?

sudo apt update
oops no

7:42 PM
[root:~]# uname -a
Linux debian.local 0.99.14t #1 Wed Jan 26 14:32:48 EST 1994 i586

su apt update
dont think sudo was out back then

Thinks it's 1994 :D

@Zanna that sounds good to me! :)
You still do a lot of photography?

[root:~]# lol there's :~ there

@NathanOsman wait, it's not?

7:43 PM
@Zanna does BBcode or html work in here?

markdown

@JamesTobin No, just markdown.

what's markdown? never heard of it

And a limited subset of markdown.

@JamesTobin Chemical Engineer, but I'm not working in the area (and not even sure if I'll, I'm with a different focus at the moment)

7:44 PM
click the little help thingy ---->

@JamesTobin It's kinda sorta like reStructured Text.
Well.
bash: apt: command not found
So much for that.

is there apt-get?

@IanC nope, not at all

Nope.

not much

7:46 PM
I wonder if dpkg is here.

@NathanOsman hmm. dpkg?
oh
heh

Aha!

wish I could do full fledged html lol

dpkg is here.

yay

7:46 PM

wazzat

XFree86... wow.

lol

@Zacharee1 What happens when I type dpkg.

huh

7:47 PM
Which X11 do I install? "Xs" or "Xw"?

@JamesTobin There's actually a relatively wide variety of formats and combinations thereof that you can use.

@NathanOsman X11 is the one we use now right?

not a lot of commands though

@JamesTobin Commands? What would you call an HTML command?

/me sighs

7:49 PM
Oh, you mean irq style?

eeerek doesnt even have that basic stuff lol
no I dont mean that
I'm too used to that on other chat programs

Like what?

@Zanna fancy ;D

?
html gives me a lot of options
/kickban terdon haha
not saying that is html
the /me command is nice though

Yes, so far, you've only given examples of IRC commands.

7:51 PM
and skype
html? you really want me to paste html in here?

HTML doesn't have commands
HTML is code

Oh? Skype has implemented IRC codes now?

always did
@Zacharee1 excuse my miscommunicationalismeitionsnessealities

Since when? I've been using it for more than a decade and haven't seen anything like that. Haven't used the Windows version since, um, a long time though.

Skype has lots of commands

7:53 PM
problem with having html available is people can get your ip with that
@terdon the reason is you havent tried the darned commands!

But seriously, most things you might need are probably implemented. Either natively or through userscripts. If you'd give an example of the kind of thing you're after, I might be able to help.

@terdon I will tell you that I have skype on my Windows ME and that has commands
old version

@edwinksl thanks : )

@JamesTobin I'm sure it does. Last time I was a Windows user, Win98 was top of the line and I don't recall commands back then.
This is long before skype was bought by MS

I AM USING THE WINDOWS 98 VERSION ON WINDOWS ME

7:54 PM
THATS GREAT

windows ME is like exactly the same as 98 with just better driver support and easier to get LAN working

The Linux version of Skype used to accept s/.../.../ and would actually edit your last message.

@JamesTobin Please don't shout.

SORRY
lol
@nathan that's kinda nice ;)

Anyway, you can either give an example of what you're missing here, or keep complaining about it. Your choice.

7:56 PM
I already asked you if you actually wanted me to be a dummy and paste html here
hang on

@terdon pls dont use caps

<joke>my life</joke>
there's HTML for you

<object data="https://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/votd.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="300" height="190"><param name="movie" value="https://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/votd.swf">

<param name="menu" value="false"><param name="align" value="middle"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="never"><param name="quality" value="high">
<param name="wmode" value="opaque"></object>

@JamesTobin Can't you describe what you'd like to do? And you can paste HTML here, just use the "fixed font" button that appears as soon as you paste your text in the box.

7:58 PM
sigh
You can do just about aNyThInG with html

OK, no you can't display flash movies here (happily).

even BBcode is better than what you have here

i cant write linux in html

@terdon it isnt really a flash movie
but that type of code could do flash moview
*movies

we're a chatroom not a forum

7:59 PM
@JamesTobin No, it's pointing at one, I can see that.

I know

and why would we allow dynamic editing of page content? Wouldn't that just allow people to inject malware as they please?

@terdon it only changes once a day that particular one. stop telling me stuff about something you havent even tried

@JamesTobin ohmygod this is so untrue
markdown is so elegant and clean

what?

the darn thing only changes once a day

haha ikr @Zacharee1

@JamesTobin yeah, but that's not the point

@JamesTobin Wow. You're kinda confrontational, aren't you? The code you pasted points to a flash file. Whether you want to call it a movie or not is another thing. And yes, I did see that it posts excerpts from some holy book.

@Zanna :p

8:02 PM
@terdon you are ignored

That one we have implemented. Let me know if you need any help with it.

o_O

you can ignore mods?!

didnt know he was mod
but it let me ignore him. good for now

@KazWolfe apparently, but I wouldn't recommend it

8:04 PM
or is that against the rules?
:|

@KazWolfe Sure. We're just human and can be as annoying as the next person.

@terdon trust me, we know

:)

dunno how to unignore

@JamesTobin click their profile picture in the user list on the right and uningnore

8:05 PM
done

damn, I moved to this flat like 3 months ago, and I'm already considering looking for somewhere else

language!

@terdon okay then! i hereby ignore @NathanOsman for the lulz

haha

8:07 PM
@KazWolfe Considering how funny he tends to be, that seems counterproductive.

@Zacharee1 damnit people need to stop asking these answers. WE ARE NOT A FORUM AND I AM GOING TO REPEAT IT UNTIL I DIE

The dude that "administer" the place is really annoying, I get a complain about something stupid every week

@KazWolfe No, the answerer
@terdon @KazWolfe is the true Disruptor

that's a hilarious answer

@KazWolfe Asking.. these.. answers...

8:08 PM
@Zacharee1 aw be nice to @KazWolfe -_-

:D

once it was because I brought a friend to get him a haircut, another time because I rested my surfboard (dry and clean) on the couch, or because there was some minimum water on the bathroom floor after a shower, now he claims I left the kitchen dirty when I cleaned everything after using it

lol

and it pisses me off how he just man up through cellphone texts and talks like he is the only adult on the conversation, dude has some issues

Okay, I think I have a method here for getting Debian to read from the mini-repository I have here.

8:10 PM
are there even GUIs for Debian 0.96 or whatever you have installed?

X11 apparently.

so, what can be done?

if you install redhat the 1998 version you get like 7 of them

rec_len is too small for name_len
ext2 errors :(
Imma try formatting it with the fdisk on here.
In some ways, it's kinda cool just how little Linux and the GNU utilities have changed.

@Zanna, why did you stop photographing? Just palled (is that the word?) it?

8:21 PM
There, let's try that again...
UH-OH.
MINIX-fs: unable to read superblock
EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
MSDOS bread failed
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root
That's not good.

Through the camera \ world's flat. Circumnavigate \ your experience

Oh whew.
I see what I did wrong.

@Zanna good advice! Specially on a time where people worry so much about taking pictures of stuff they forget about living the moment
one of the things most surprised me (not in a good way) was how many people were holding their cellphones on the olympics closing ceremony. I mean, you can take a few pictures, but then just put your phone down and enjoy the party with the people around you

photography is great though, I just don't have the patience required :) And can't get interested in the hardware. I trained using film, darkroom, medium & large format cameras

only place I saw a darkroom was on movies :p
any quality difference about pictures revealed on a darkroom? (I don't understand nothing about photography as you can see haha)

8:32 PM
I still kind of feel digital printing is missing something. The cameras are just about there, and using GIMP or equivalent is much easier, more effective and more flexible than darkroom work (you need 30 years to learn that), but the printing is just... not quite... somehow...
Anyway, I take lots of pictures, they're just nothing special :)

it's funny how sometimes we get so far with technology but can't surpass the quality of a handmade process
do you post them somewhere?

xsvga's ghost

file and stat don't exist...
I retract my earlier statement.

back

8:38 PM
it's probably a matter of taste... I find the grain of the old style prints beautiful, because they speak to me about the awesome randomness of photons, while blurry pixels offend me because the loss of information is ordered.There's no rationale for that, it's just my quirky taste (I don't blog my pictures or anything no)
heh I just saw @JacobVlijm is #1 in rep leagues this week... not such a slacker after all

so you must be #2

@Zanna a minute ago you were #1 just got an upvote :)
@Zanna ah, no you're still #1 someone vote for me, quick (kidding)

I didn't see that I was #1 haha I just upvoted this askubuntu.com/questions/815032/… which is sublime
I'm way behind you - you got 345 and I got 288 (week)
but month I am #1

@zanna Thanks! this kind of questions is always fun :)

hahaha

8:46 PM
as @dino mentioned earlier, I got some extremely cheap points

@zanna who doesn't?

@Zanna I think I get what you mean! Might even relate to that idea on things other than photography
well, I gotta start getting ready for work
have a good evening you all!

haha yeah we all get cheap points :) but I dream of being able to write answers like that lid standby control one! I will learn all the things...
have a good day @IanC

# XF86_SVGA
Fatal server error:
No config file found!

obrigado :)

8:50 PM
Oh yes, that's back when we needed a config file for X.

@Zanna I am afraid my #1 answer took me... (literally) 5 seconds. I was the first one to see it, had no time because I was just starting to teach. Threw the "short answer".

@JacobVlijm lol that mkdir answer is indeed... short

haha I've seen that one
mkdir takes multiple args?!?! who knew!!??

where?

@edwinksl as short as it gets :)

8:54 PM
brevity is the soul of wit

wjandrea bagged a similar prize with cat file1 file2 today
that made me laugh
I really like my top answer now, but for a long time it was something embarrassingly basic about how to run a java program
I guess those cheap points make up for the answers you slave over that barely get an upvote (except from @edwinksl who misses nothing)

Almost got X11 working.

yay

I just need to figure out which xserver I need to install.
And that depends on what qemu virtualizes.

sounds familliar

8:58 PM
@Zanna yeah, it proves the relativity of the reputation system. Rep cannot be compared. Not between the questions/answers of one person, not between persons.

@JacobVlijm very true
