@ParanoidPanda if you need help with a CMS, let me know. I know Rails is a good choice for that -- its tutorial is about making a blog, but you can easily do other things. You could also store the files (images uploaded, ex) on Amazon S3.

@edwinksl I don't even know how to flag this. . . . Had to flag for mod attention

@NathanOsman perl question. I have subroutine , and pass argument to it. Long story short, I need to use one of the variables as reference. This doesn't work: my $method_out = $object->$_[3]; What can I do to work around this ?
Nevermind . . . this works :
  my $method = $_[3];
  my $method_out = $object->$method;
F#### perl . . . Why does this work ?
print with sleep in while loop buffers . . . i mean, it just waits till loop exits . . .

Q: Getting UTF string from perl's subprocess

SergI am working on a simple script that gets and sets background in Ubuntu Linux ( version 16.04 , but that's irrelevant in this case ). The problem is that my folder names are UTF-8 encoded ( Chinese, specifically). Thus, getting path to current wallpaper fails , like so: my $user_background=qx/gs...

how do you make your USB @ƎpᴉʇʎXD ? I seem to recall I got something like that when I used fdisk instead of sgdisk (this is in the hazy distant past though) - for UEFI system
anyways, gotta go!

Bye then
I used RUFUS

@Rinzwind @terdon @NathanOsman how's this for two days of me perling ? gist.github.com/SergKolo/3360107fc15351c93852dd1daa603352
that script changes lockscreen background . By default , lockscreen shows user's desktop , but if you run like this: perl lock_screen_background.pl /usr/share/backgrounds/wetland.jpg - then you will have wetlands.jpg as your background image.
Perl version seems laggier when it locks than bash, though . . . But CPU usage is below 1% , which is cool

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD: What is that about? :D

user136984
@A.B.: Well, I tried Kubuntu 16.04.1 yesterday in a VM and let's just say that the installer was a little bit buggy... Well, in fact it was so buggy it killed my installation by disappearing halfway through and making me think the installation had finished and thus shutting it down. It also had some design issues, but I couldn't get it working properly after the half-installation so I had to delete it, I may give it another go and report some bugs if I get them again...

user136984
But shouldn't they really have got these sorts of bugs out of the release ISO by now?

@ParanoidPanda what coding languages do you "speak" ?

user136984
@Serg: Java

user136984
;)

8:47 AM
and that's it ?
I thought you also have studied some javascript

user136984
Oh yes, well, plenty of others, that's just my sort of primary one.

user136984
@Serg: So yes, also JS, Python, some Perl, Shell scripting, C... I think there might be some more but those are the only ones which came to mind immediately.

user136984
:)

user136984
When you said "speak" I thought you meant like I could actually talk in when having a strange conversation with somebody which was about fruit and not programming. :P

Oky . . . So far I'm most confident in Python and shell , I started Perl yesterday ( so figuring it out so far ). I've done some C and Java , but I'm gonna need to get back to these because I got rusty . That makes it sort of 5 . . .
Ruby is next, so that's gonna be 6
HA, I think that coversation would be exclusively made out of print statements

user136984
8:52 AM
I did Ruby a long time back, but I don't really remember it very well.

user136984
As I think I said before though, it only took me 12 hours to learn JS so...

user136984
If I need it, I'll just learn it real quick.

user136984
Also, something funny from the Olympic ceremony:

user136984

user136984

8:55 AM
Yeah, learning programming languages goes a lot faster when you know one or two languages already. I'm picking up Perl in these two days pretty well , I'd say. It sure isn't top notch, but at least I'm making something

user136984
The above images were taken at the closing ceremony of the Olympics... :D

ƎpᴉʇʎXDMy question has only upvotes but no answers, yet no comments. It's just a distant dessert I guess. Why is it so inactive?

user136984
@Serg: Yeah, where have you been living? It's been all around the media recently! :D

user136984
8:58 AM
Well, at least the Japanese media I read. :P

@ParanoidPanda i personally hate that argument. not everyone is interested in reading media

@ParanoidPanda under a rock XD I don't read news usually. I only go to askubuntu and facebook regularly on my phone.

user136984
@edwinksl: Well, it was sort of a joke, because it's only been in Japanese media and I'm probably the only one round here who reads that...

so i just had spicy sandwich . . . .at 3 AM . . . .So lets get one more ! XD
Well . . . . stackoverflow is really broken . . . People totally misread my question ( that's 1) and gave bunch of suggestive explanations without posting no answers ( that's 2 ).

@ParanoidPanda Hard to believe that this music from my youth is still being heard.

@Takkat Hey, at least he's not posting baby metal, for once! :P

lol

Definitely an improvement IMO :)

a huge improvement that is... next to hear should be "Supper's Ready"
or "Carpet Crawlers" (my personal favorite then).

@Takkat dancing with the moonlit king is from the Peter Gabriel years, right? Collins on drums?

user136984
11:09 AM
@Takkat: For me it's first going to be the The Battle of Epping Forest, but maybe what you suggest after that. :)

yeah those days when Gabriel made all the music and Collins was drumming only.

user136984
Those were the good days, after that though it didn't go too well, not awfully, but it lost the magic.

user136984
VTC this EOL question.

@ParanoidPanda quite interesting song . . . classic-style rock , very lyrical. Might not be something i'd listen over and over, but it would depend on the mood probably
alright, i'm gonna try to go to bed
too excited though

user136984
@Serg: What about this then? :)

That's like . . .Jazz ?
I like it :)

user136984
Yeah, it's a good band. :)

@Serg Weather report is one of the greatest Jazz Fusion groups of all time, comprised of some of the greatest Jazz musicians of the era.
And yes, it is most certainly Jazz.
@ParanoidPanda my boy, you're growing up! Very well done!
:P

user136984

Well , as you can see i've no clue about no jazz musicians , hehe . . . I'm actually too excited right now to even remember any jazz musicians which i may have known

user136984
11:26 AM
@Serg: What are you so excited about?

I just got a new one Unity indicator working . . .Ooooo, gonna finalize it tomorrow and push to git . . .

user136984
Great! What does it do?

@ParanoidPanda you will find out once it's released . . . so pretty much tomorrow :D
Lets just say . . .it will make users like Unity Launcher a bit more . . .
@ParanoidPanda after you know what it does, let me know if you would like something like this for Gnome , because I think that totally could be done for gnome as well
Mkay, shutting down , \o bye folks

user136984
@Serg: Sure! Good luck and goodnight! ;)

Does anyone know the name of unity's screenshot tool? Gnome has gnome-screenshot, what's the Unity equivalent?

user136984
11:33 AM
Didn't even know Unity had one! :D

I don't know that it does, I'm only assuming so

user136984
I thought it got those kind of applications from the GNOME stack?

@terdon just use gnome-screenshot , it's the same
OK, now i'm really gone

@Serg Yes, but it's probably not installed and installing it would bring loads of Gnome dependencies. I have a user on U&L wanting to take a screenshot of Unity running in a VM. For some reason, the host system can't do it and I don't want to tell him to install what could be a few hundred megs of dependencies just to get a screenshot program.

@terdon it is installed , by default

user136984
11:43 AM
@terdon: I use Shutter which is pretty good.

@Serg It is? On a Unity-based system with no Gnome? Cool!

@terdon virtualbox, by the way, has a screenshot utility

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten about that. Thanks
You want some U&L reps?

I have a proprietary plug-in that I made for an IDE. I do have plans to make it open-source in the future, but not until I get some major updates in as I simply do not have the time at the moment. But I would like to set up a bug tracker for it for the time being. Do you guys know if LaunchPad would be an ok place or whether they only deal with actual packages that can go into Linux repositories?

@ParanoidPanda Why don't you just go to the launchpad site, click on the "terms of use" link at the bottom, then the "Project Licencing Policy" and read that?

user136984
@terdon: Well, I'm sure they allow proprietary projects there, I've seen them there before, such as their website and Skype. I'm just wanting to know if all things are welcome to use their bug tracker or if it's only packages which can go into repositories. And as mine is a plugin for an IDE I don't know if that would be fine there, but I suppose I could ask.

@ParanoidPanda Did you read the page I mentioned?

user136984
No, and seems I was wrong, which is strange, because how does Skype get away with it then and why do they have a "Proprietary" level for bugs?

@ParanoidPanda Well then, I suggest you do so. It explains what you're asking about quite clearly.
They allow projects that don't share their code, just not for free.

user136984
12:14 PM
Ah... Well, that's a little mean...

user136984
Do you know of any other bug trackers that would be free and fine with proprietary stuff?

I don't understand why in the world you're making this closed source.

user136984
Do you realise how many shopping lists will be hidden away randomly in that code?

user136984
12:38 PM
@terdon: No, that's not really the main problem at the moment, I don't think that there are many too strange and unprecedented things in my code. Just that the UI and the actual plugin are currently separate projects in my IDE and are not at all connected at the moment in the code for convenience purposes (running the plugin runs a new version of the IDE and takes ages, running the UI by itself is much faster and allows tests to be run easier).

user136984
So it's not really feasible at the moment to make it open-source. I also don't really have the time, but I would like to get a bug tracker set up.

I don't see the problem. Just open source it, you're not claiming it's clean. That's kinda the whole point of FOSS.

user136984
@terdon: I would kind of prefer it to be clean and stable before I open the source. It's not too far away, maybe another month or two.

user136984
But I've only got like 3 more major things to do.

1:30 PM
Recently, I acquired an old laptop. The windows system was incredibly unstable, so I installed ubuntu.
I'm experiencing an issue where sometimes wlan0 would randomly shut down.

user136984
@Unihedron: Which Ubuntu version and flavour?

user136984
The output of lsb_release -a will do.

@AbhishekBhatia We'll need more information. We can't know which of those you need. Do you have a printer, for example? If not, you can disable CUPS. Even better, try to figure out what is slowing things up. You can use a tool like bootchart and then add the results to your question.

you even referenced the dupe target in your post
flagging as dupe is better

I did that too, but kind of as an after thought.
I had had the problem before, so I posted the answer, then realised it probably had a dupe, so found it, posted in the link and then flagged.
I guess I shouldn't have bothered posting the answer, though.

i upvoted for your effort but the downvote might been happened because someone thought you copied and pasted from the dupe target

Quite possible.
To be honest, I don't remember where I originally got that solution.

anyway, it is no big deal

Nope. Thought about making a meta post about it, but then thought, "Duh, idiot. What's 8 points out of 1200 anyhow?"
I did think it was funny that I got a negative score on a post that solved the OP's problem. First time it's happened... to me. :)
In any case, don't dupes get removed eventually?

the downvoting might be reversed if the system thinks it is serial downvoting

cool

@Zacharee1 i am still annoyed that N didn't stand for nutella

that boring video might make you feel better

Q: How to change my SVN weak password from command line?

Billal BEGUERADJI'm familiar with git but totally new to svn, so forgive me for my ignorance. I have been given access to an svn repository but as I am paranoiac when it comes to security issues, I need to change the weak password I have been given. How to do that from command line?

@Zacharee1 Let's see how long it takes before OnePlus gets this out to OP3 users.

They don't even have factory images for Nexus devices yet...
