9:00 PM
# perl -v

This is perl, version 4.0
O_o

wat
and DE yet?

I am still trying to get X11 to start.

hmm

What is an alternative to stat?
Ah, progress!
VGA2: Too little memory for virtual resolution 1024 1024

woot woot

9:15 PM
@NathanOsman I missed the beginning, what are you up to, in summary?

so you need more than.. what?

@Zacharee1 I'm not sure if it is referring to system or video memory.

@Zanna he installed Debian 0.9x in a VM

thanks

@NathanOsman I'm going to guess VRAM

9:16 PM
qemu was told to allocate 256 MB to the VM and it's only recognizing 64 MB.

VRAM?

No, system memory.
> "Default vram value, 16 MB"
That should be more than enough for a 1024x1024 monochrome display.
Oh my.
It's only recognizing 64k.

@Zacharee1 entered
@Zacharee1 seems ok
@Zacharee1 no not really.
you can add more to the answer, but not the question.

dat triple zach ping

each was a reply to a ping he sent me, so we're even :p

9:26 PM
it's the opposite of ping pong... verrrrryyy slooowww

lol

SUCCESS!
....er, almost.
I see the mouse pointer flash and then it complains "Cannot open mouse".

hahaha

9:45 PM
It just doesn't seem to recognize the PS/2 mouse...
Reminds me too much of this:
All long help threads should have a sticky globally-editable post at the top saying 'DEAR PEOPLE FROM THE FUTURE: Here's what we've figured out so far ...'
3

haha

hi all
I really need help
so, I'm out of space on my root partition
and everything is slowly stopping to work

That's not good.

....Ask a question, if it hasn' t been asked before

@NathanOsman so damn true

9:50 PM
it looks as though if I try to free some space on it, there's something that keeps on filling memory up
btw, I have a separate home partition and am using an LVM

(And this is why we tell people not to put /home and /var on the same partition as /, but anyway...)

/var/log is fine, nothing's exploded

@towc /var also has a tendency to slowly grow.
@towc What happened then?

/var/ is about 280MB, nothing weird for now

9:51 PM
@NathanOsman I have no idea. It can possibly be a virus?

@Zacharee1 --^

so, I tried running the disk usage analyzer (I'm actually in debian, but the unix chat was dead)

@towc du will tell you what is taking up space.

@NathanOsman I have mine setup with /home and /var on /, and I don't seem to ever have space issues. Where do you see the size that is allocated to /home and /var?

@Seth nice phone

9:52 PM
do you have it?

@Terrance df should list mounted filesystems and their sizes.

only If you will buy my current phone

@NathanOsman I see that, but I don't see how leaving /home and /var on / causes out of space issues.

@CodeX lol

@Terrance log and application storage explosion

9:53 PM
(which is?)

If either of them fills up, there is no room to write anything anywhere.
PID files can't be created, etc.
Lots of apps won't start.

Note edge
and htc one m7

@NathanOsman I get it now. I just have been lucky enough then to never experience that.

I did once - trust me, it was not fun.

anyway, I ran the disk usage analyser on /

9:55 PM
20% discount if you will buy in next 24 hours

@towc inodes full maybe?

beautiful disk usage analyser

@Terrance how do I check?

@towc df -i or I like to use df -hi

9:57 PM
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/dm-1                     610800 220635   390165   37% /
doesn't seem like it's used up

That seems OK

auto scroll broken .. Looks like I have to uninstall this chrome beta ..

I do get this on df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/dm-1                     9480420 9464024         0 100% /

RAID?

I mean, I guess I'll just have to expand my root partiton by a lot and see what's taking up so much space
unless any of you has better ideas

10:02 PM
OK, why is there only 8GB allocated for /?
That seems to be extreme minimum for a USB drive.

my machine has 1TB of memory
apparently that was default allocated memory for the root partition

WOW!
That is why you are out of space

1 TB of memory??? wow

and I didn't have any problems for 7 months now

or hard drive

10:03 PM
tried sudo apt-get clean, and it successfully removed something like 200MB, but they were quickly filled up
in less than 10 seconds

Updates can fill up that much space quickly

so, do you suggest I just make the / bigger? The behaviour is pretty weird
@Terrance I didn't set anything up to update

why dont you just use iotop and see which process is writing

you mean ps aux?
didn't see anything out of the ordinary
wouldn't necessarily know what to look for tbf

What is in your /home directory that is using 3.3GB?
Downloads maybe?

10:07 PM
I deleted so much stuff initially because I thought I was somehow completely out of memory, then realized it was just the root partition
I had more than 60GB in that

memory

I wonder if my life will be better after I close chrome
brb
answer is no
but now I can't reopen chrome for some reason
while firefox still works
I DUNNO WHAT TO DO

how do you open chrome

not even sure how to expand my root partition
my setup is ever so different than mostly everything I've checked out

10:18 PM
@edwinksl nice

can someone walk me through resizing root?

I have no idea about resizing in linux

so, apparently dm-1 is my root partition
and I need to expand that

18
Q: How to extend my root (/) partition?

RamvigneshTill today I was using ubuntu 13.04 in my windows7/ubuntu dual boot. Just now I have upgraded to ubuntu 14.04. My software updater showed an updates available message. I proceeded with Install Now . Soon I got the following window. Then I tried sudo apt-get clean as recommended. Nothing happe...

saw that already, ofc
but again, pretty different setup
can't be safe

10:21 PM
So we have this center at our university, which helps victims of rape and stuff . . . which is cool . . . Usually i don't read their posters ( which hang pretty much in every bathroom ) but my friend did . . . Well . . . speaking of "Preaching to the choir . . .

backup and format then xD

#8 is the best

rape ? can be triggering subject for some

FINALLY.
X11 on Debian 0.91.

@NathanOsman Nice!

10:26 PM
@NathanOsman 0.91 ? Geez , that's ancient, which is why it's so cool . . .What kernel version it got ?

3 hours ago, by Nathan Osman
[root:~]# uname -a
Linux debian.local 0.99.14t #1 Wed Jan 26 14:32:48 EST 1994 i586
0.99.14t apparently.

holly shiz
1994 . . .

I'm going to start a new room so I don't bother everyone with screenshots.

Invitez, plz

10:39 PM
is root supposed to own ~/.cache/dconf ?
@Serg I'd like to explain this... forgive me if you already got it, but your comment makes me think you missed something a little bit
what it's about, is that women are used to be told how to prevent ourselves getting raped
we are expected to take such action
our culture tells us that it's our responsibility to do that
that's completely rubbish
by definition it's not your responsibility to stop people doing things to you against your will, right?
so that poster is flipping the cultural message, to say, actually, it's not the victim's responsibility
it's the perpetrator's responsibility, and everyone else who might be able to stop them
it's got a jokey tone, to point out to the reader how totally ridiculous it is to make the victim responsible

@Zanna don't think it is supposed to be owned by root
but mine is owned by root, and i think i know what happened

oh?
I thought I might have messed it up trying to reproduce other people's sudo GUI-APP foolishness

it is safe to just sudo rm -r though, i did it a few weeks ago before i got it again today

@Zanna If it's really the case of "flipping the cultural message" , it's doing very poor job. Especially when it comes to such subject. From the perspective of a rape victim who reads this poster, it will undermine the Center's credibility.
Satire can be fun , but not in such context . . .
That is, if it is satire and not really really r8tarded author

^wrong chat :P

10:50 PM
2 messages moved to Debian 0.91

11k emails in my hotmail . . . oh,boy, that's gonna be a fun day cleaning it all

it's... not... satire... it's not meant to be fun... it's meant to undermine the message we get that rape is our fault
it's a classic feminist meme... you can find versions of it everywhere. Seeing it makes me feel like a giant rock was lifted from my back

@Zanna maybe it undermines something , but I don't think it does any good service

well... I've said what I needed to say and this topic uses up my spoons, and I need to sleep
I rm ed the dconf cache, thanks! :)
see you later xxx

@Zanna go ahead, get some rest. Good night ! o/

11:04 PM
later! :D

mkay , back go cleaning emails

if someone has starred your github repo, do they get notified of releases?

@Serg no
