@Zacharee1 not as weird as Pewdie

@Serg Haven't even tried watching that yet
But I did watch some JackSepticEye
curses everywhere, and with Irish accent

Jack and Mark are my favorites . I watch them regularly.

I subbed to Mark because of the MEOW video

Pewdie isn't quite my favorite. I can watch him sometimes, but i'm not even subscribed

and then he made WOOF, so it was worth it

12:01 AM
MEOW is hillarious XD
What brought me to his channel was horror games though

Somehow I get the sense that Gdk is not meant for tweaking already existing windows, it's only for those you create yourself :/

what was the Q?

@Zacharee1 lemme go find it again
The category was "It happened one night" and the question was "September 12, 1759: A British force under this general scales the cliffs below the plains of Abraham".
@Zacharee1 Not that I expect them to know every answer, but it is a weird feeling when you know the answer and none of them do.

idk what that is :p

oh crap what is the answer

1:40 AM
Major General James Wolfe (2 January 1727 – 13 September 1759) was a British Army officer, known for his training reforms but remembered chiefly for his victory over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Canada in 1759. The son of a distinguished general, Edward Wolfe, he had received his first commission at a young age and saw extensive service in Europe where he fought during the War of the Austrian Succession. His service in Flanders and in Scotland, where he took part in the suppression of the Jacobite Rebellion, brought him to the attention of his superiors. The advancement...

Is he related to Kaz Wolfe?

Henry WH Hack v2.0There is a rule that says "don't use/install more than one firewalls on one computer " (software firewalls to be exact) which means if you have a network and it has five computers you can only install/use one firewall on each computer in the network. @HenryWHHackv2.0 happens xD ..I think you can't use two software firewall because they will talk to the same hardware .. but this is my guess .. multiple hardware firewall is fine

@CodeX I figured that one out a long time ago.

A: What does it mean "bash < <( curl http://rvm.io/releases/rvm-install-head )"

Brian Campbell<(command) creates a named pipe with the output of the command (or uses an existing /dev/fd file), and substitutes the filename of that pipe into the command. < then redirects standard input from that given file. So yes, in this case, this is equivalent to curl http://rvm.io/releases/rvm-insta...

I never knew you could use <() to create a named pipe on-demand.
2

sort of, but named pipe is slightly different
this is process substitution
This stuff happens within the same command, so it happens relatively instantly. With named pipe, I can send something to pipe, walk away, smoke, drink a cup of coffe, come back and send everything to another process

I think apt looks more pretty than apt-get in a way. :D
Why can't I use espeak in python any more?

@edwinksl this is toooooo hilarious

apparently vim can view contents of tar.gz? and i think that guy is saying emacs can do that too
@Zanna put it into practice?

This is the second time I haven't been able to connect to a brand new server I spun up.

I switched datacenters. That doesn't really solve the problem but it lets me keep working.

Here the [architecture] tag should be removed right? I know it's out of context, but is there a case for leaving it as others may make the same mistake? askubuntu.com/questions/803587/simple-architecture-program

Yes.
The tag is intended for questions that deal with CPU architecture.
That particular question does not.

of course, but is there a case for leaving it anyway even though it is out of context?

7:00 AM
No, not really.

ok :) and it doesn't need the open-source tag either I think?

hi @Serg
you there ?
anybody help me with a scipy grid data question ?

If I throw an exception with a Java class, and then I use a try-catch statement, does throwing it before the try-cache override the try-cache or can I do both (I need to do both, one to get rid of an error where checks mean I don't need a try-cache, and then I do need a try-cache with the same exception for another part in the class)?

What?
A try-catch only catches the exceptions specified for it that get thrown inside its try clause.

user136984
Yes, but if I have already thrown the exception to deal with a previous error where I didn't need the try-catch statement, the try-catch statement isn't ignored it something is it?

You're speaking in riddles.
Example?

@ByteCommander it is about Java so what did you expect? >:-D
spam! :+)

user136984
10:06 AM
@ByteCommander: When I declare the class I put a throws IOException at the end, but then within the class I need to have a try-catch statement which catches that exception because I have two places, one where I shouldn't have a try-catch statement and that's why I'm throwing it at the beginning, and then I have a bit where I do need the try-catch statement. So does throwing it affect a try-catch statement with it in any way later on?

gone! >:-)

user136984
Actually, I think it's fine...

user136984
But I do have another question, I need to load something from a file, now my IDE is telling me that I need to use the FileInputStream, but shouldn't it be the FileOutputStream? Or is the Properties class just different in some way?

@ParanoidPanda If you declare a class as "throws xyException", that just means that the compiler allows uncaught exceptions in this class.

How is this 'unclear' and why has it got two downvotes?

@ParanoidPanda I don't know!

@AndroidDev Thanks but you don't need to ping a moderator for off topic questions. The community can deal with them just fine. It already has three close votes.

1:41 PM
@StefanoPalazzo I can't see close votes, so I wouldn't know.

Right :)
Of course
Well in any case. Mods really don't have to close questions. High reputation users do this.

Voted but like Stefano said there's no need for pinging , just leave it in the chat, and users will deal with it @AndroidDev
@ParanoidPanda your question went to 3 downvotes and back to 0 very quickly :p

@Serg OK.

@AndroidDev Also, between you and me, I don't mind if questions aren't closed right away. If a question gets answered before it's closed, I'm not gonna complain.
pokerface :|

@StefanoPalazzo Understood.

1:45 PM
@StefanoPalazzo it seems to me that close vote privillege is being over used, is it not ?

@Serg By mods you mean? Or by users?
Or in general

@StefanoPalazzo by high-rep users . Sometimes it seems like a stampede race just to close as many things as possible and argue all over in the process. Maybe it's just me but lately it seems it's been getting worse

I am assuming that I can have both the old and the new version of Skype on the same machine running side-by-side (they come from different repos)?

This user, askubuntu.com/users/864/steve-beattie , oddly reminds me of my professor in college. Except that this guy is in portland
Coincidentally , both are security experts

1:55 PM
@ParanoidPanda It's not their origin that matters but whether they're using the same files or package names or are marked as conflicting.

@ParanoidPanda em . . . at least according to that article, you probably can't, because you will be notified of upgrade, and upgrade will probably get rid of old skype and get you new and shiny one
@ParanoidPanda consider installing that skype in VM first . . . just to test out

Q: Why do some distros come with LAMP installed?

Edward Sammut AlessiUbuntu comes pre-installed with PHP, MySQL and Apache. OSX does also. Whats the reason for bundling them with the system?

user136984
@Serg: Well, they are installed from different repos, so won't that make a difference unless what @ByteCommander says is true for this?

Of course what I say is true.
Always.
How can you doubt this?

@ParanoidPanda what byte says is true - origin doesn't matter. There's different versions of packages from same ubuntu repositories. But they can get into conflict because they need different libraries installed.
in any case, you can keep old andnew skype , i think, but I could guess that the preinstall script in new skype's deb file will have lines that remove old skype
though i haven't looked at the package itself , that's just a guess

2:05 PM
I don't think I would even want new skype.
After seeing the Windows 10 Skype, that makes me cry.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I meant true as in the boolean for this matter, that is whether it is the case or not for this matter. Not whether it is true or a lie in this matter. :)

@ByteCommander what's so terrible about it ?

user136984
@Serg: Is the new version using the same core as the other one or are they redesigning anything there? That is, because it is Alpha, should we expect any security issues or is it just feature lacking at the moment?

user136984
Also, do you think it will try to spy on our other activities at all? Like I hope with Windows 10's reputation it won't try to claw into my system and assert itself there.

@ParanoidPanda I am no skype enthusiast , but i think skype always spies on you. I heard there was something in wiki-leaks or Snowden's leaks about skype

user136984
2:12 PM
Really? I'd be interested to know more about that.

user136984
I don't really like Skype so much either, as you know I use Tox. But I may need Skype for business reasons some time soon so I'm just investigating if I can get a Skype which has more features but is not more likely to have security issues over the old one I currently have.

@ParanoidPanda No idea what you're talking...
@Serg I haven't seen as many ads in a whole month as in a single hour of using Skype for Win 10.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I meant that I was talking about it being 'true' for the matter at hand rather than a question of you telling the truth. Just to avoid any confusion.

That did not make it any clearer what you mean.

user136984
There are third-party adverts in Skype?

2:15 PM
@ByteCommander welcome to 21st century - everything relies on adds.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, what did you think I meant originally? Or do you not know? :D

I have no idea. And the longer I try to think about it, the less do I care...

@Serg just because that's the way it is doesn't mean we should accept it ;)

user136984
Ok, then just forget about it! :D

user136984
It is not important.

2:16 PM
@ParanoidPanda There are. Tons. Let me screenshot.

@Zanna I am personally OK , with ads . True they are annoying sometimes, but i know this is the revenue that goes to app developers ( and i am talking about app devs in general, not Skype specifically ) . Also youtubers - lately i skip adds much less than before , because i do want to support my favorite youtubers

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, maybe I will change my mind about getting the Alpha then... Are they present there too do you know? And is there no way to turn them off (I guess not)?

well I'm totally OK with you being OK with it :) but I am not OK with it! ;)

@ByteCommander Could you recommend a good internal one?

user136984
Maybe if we complain enough they will change how they do it...

user136984
2:20 PM
Can't they just pretend to show adverts so that they get money but nobody actually has to see them? :P

user136984
Like perhaps they could get the bot inside Skype to look at them for you.

And that ad in the right changes every 2 seconds.

at least it's some variety XD

user136984
Ok, that is not nice... And there is no way around it?

Don't use Skype.
6
Simple.

user136984
2:23 PM
Well, I'm going to need to use it for a little while so...

I only know the windows one, and the only way to disable them is to set up the URLs they come from to localhost in your hosts file.

You guys realize, right, that the "new" Skype for Linux app is really just a webkit wrapper for their web app?

user136984
I think I'll just stick with the old version then... :D

@ByteCommander sneaky

Oh, and I do not only get car ads.

user136984
2:24 PM
Are the ads at least based on what you type?

I also get beauty products, vacations, etc - the full spectrum.
No.

user136984
Actually, that would be worse! :D

user136984
You don't get any inappropriate adverts though?

user136984
Ok, need to do my Japanese audio course now... :)

@Seth so they finally got that web-skype thing working huh ? I heard even chromebooks can use it now

2:26 PM
yeah

user136984
HTTPS is used to secure your connection, but there's something else you're meant to use as well, what's it called again (it's another acronym)?

Lovely. Maybe at some point i'll get myself a chromebook and use it as laptop for testing stuff or for working on stuff outside of house

@ParanoidPanda A VPN maybe?

user136984
No, it's a longer one with Hs, Ls, and Ts in it I think... It's to prevent some sort of attack that HTTPS doesn't cover.

user136984
I read about it somewhere in a few places recently... But I don't remember where...

2:47 PM
@Zanna @ByteCommander do you have any requests for me to fix my existing indicators or make new ones ?

currently not, no :)

sorry @Serg I may have missed updates on GitHub --- is there a new readme? The last version I got does exactly what I want - it only indicates caps-lock, and all I see is one red or green icon. I'm finding it extremely useful :)

@ParanoidPanda Maybe you ate so much that the mass you accumulated now bends spacetime around you and you experience gravitational time dilatation...

but I want to accept your answer to my question... is the indicator behaving in the expected way or does it still need refinement?

3:02 PM
@Zanna i will spin up my Mate VM and make sure it works, will add new screenshots. yea, i updated readme file. I haven't made any new changes to code so i would expect it works

it works fabulously for me... I added it to my path and everything is glorious. But in your video it does some other things? And was I dreaming or were we supposed to pass some options to control it? like to tell it which keys not to indicate? Or does it just detect that I have no num or scroll lock keys?
