Random thought: ubn.tt URL shortener for AU. Normal users can create links on *.askubuntu.com and mods can create links to anywhere in the web.
Substitute 'mods' with 'users who have more than a certain amount of reputation and mods'

Bash. Yuck.
Worst. Language. Ever.

@NathanOsman having issues with word splitting ?

I can't even return a string from a function!

y u h8 serg's best friend

Imma rewrite this either in Python or Perl.

4:08 PM
@NathanOsman echo "My String" . . . that's how you do it

@Serg That feels like such a kludge though.
@edwinksl I thought Awk was Serg's best friend?

hmm maybe you are right ;D

@NathanOsman well , both are my good friends , though i do find python's company quite interesting lately
return_string()
{
   STRING="root"
   if [ $(id -u) -eq 0  ];then
      STRING="$STRING user"
   fi
   echo "$STRING"
}
something like that

Sounds like Nathan is using the wrong hammer for the job tho.

Probably . . . .Maybe the job requires scalpel instead of hammer

4:30 PM
Well, just completed disc 3 of my audiobook Japanese course! :D

user136984
I only started this week with the audiobook, but I am already learning so much!

user136984
It manages to pack a lot in, each disc is 1 hour.

congrats :) I'm jealous

user136984
Sometimes a little over.

user136984
I was doing disc 3 yesterday, but it got to midnight and I kind of went to sleep half way through so I had to do it again today... :D

4:32 PM
@Serg sorry I have been very busy at work :) Yes, I know exactly what you mean. However, this has been a constant theme since about 2011 when I joined. This gets brought up all the time. I think what's happening is a sort of confirmation bias, where we only notice the instances where people are quick to vote to close, even though we're not so sure we agree, but not the vast, massive mountain of questions that get closed quietly and efficiently, and for good reason.

user136984
I'm thinking maybe I'll also do disc 4 today, but I normally just stick to one a day.

user136984
There are 8 of them, but this is just the foundation course. There is also an advanced course and I believe an extended vocabulary one, but I haven't got that one yet.

... Yes we're aggressive. But remember also that question can be re-opened after the author has edited them. (they're "on hold" these days). I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

user136984
Oh dear! It just struck me! There is a "disc" and a "disk"! But which to use? :D

user136984
I should really be using disc I guess because I am in the UK, but I really like the look of disk... :D

user136984
4:36 PM
I guess it probably doesn't really matter, the UK spell-checker is fine with both of them.

@ParanoidPanda this will be useful when you need to remember the stations on the yamanote line in tokyo youtube.com/watch?v=PKxxK9Cb6fk

user136984
@edwinksl: It's great! I love it! :D

the train plays a different melody for each stop
pretty cool

@ParanoidPanda "disk" usually refers to something fixed or "hard". "disc" tends to refer to something removable or "soft". Example: CD-ROMs are referred to as "discs" but an internal hard drive would be referred to as a "disk drive".
2
Yes, its confusing. :D

user136984
@edwinksl: What? They actually play these songs in the tube? :D

user136984
4:44 PM
But I think I'll live on one of the islands where those red おしり monkeys live and go bath with them in the volcanically heated water areas! :D

oh, not the song i posted. let me give you a link to what i mean. one sec.

haha to me the (arbitrary) distinction is if it appears round, it is a disc. If not, it is a disk

user136984
Ok :D

user136984
@NathanOsman A bit like Japanese then! ;P

user136984
4:45 PM
But I only get temporarily confused with that...

user136984
They just kept throwing too many words at me which all sounded the same and meant slightly different things... :D

user136984
You know that their counting systems differ depending on the shape and type of item you are talking about?

user136984
Are there are no real rules to each of them either, they will randomly just do something else.

user136984
So it's a fun ride! ;D

user136984
But this course does a pretty could job at making it less confusing I think, plus it gives you fake students who get it wrong all the time. :P

4:47 PM
Now how in the world do people figure these things out???

Q: Strange women and their strange ways of giving you phone numbers

dcfyjWhile Bob was walking down the street one day, he met a wonderful woman that was attractive and smart and a great conversationalist. After they had been chatting for a while the woman looked at her watch and quickly got up and scribbled something down while saying "I have to go, I'm running ver...

user136984
And why have I got Buddhist chants going round my head now? :D

@StefanoPalazzo oh, i am not concerned that much over it. I just don't like the type of attitude some people have: " I don't understand this question and don't think anybody else should deal with it , so close all the things !!! Except those that bring me sweet sweet reputation points " Maybe I am over dramatizing things . Just think with great close vote button comes great responsibility or something like that . . .

NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO

@Zanna excuse me ? O_o you ok ? should we call 911 ?

pretty sure it is not 911 in UK ;)

4:49 PM
it is not
11*

haha sorry, that was for Panda :)

forget the last digit

agree with you about VTC :)

Zanna, what's the emergency number in the UK ? 11... what ?

haha @edwinksl my brother and I have been enjoying your Droogans link all day

4:51 PM
@Zanna the paranoid one? :p

emergency number in UK is 999

user136984
@Serg: In the UK it is 999.

oh . . . well i was way off

user136984
111 is for smaller things with doctors, and I believe 101 (or similar) is for police, but not emergencies.

oh, 111 ! That's what it was . . . .I have heard it once on Cards Against Humanity with RPGMinx . . . they had British deck on

4:53 PM
In the Netherlands it's 112 for very serious things and 0900-8844 (which, mind you, is a PAID line) for police

@Zanna ;D

In Soviet Union and later in ex-Soviet countries it was 02, but with the mobile technology it has changed

@edwinksl Isn't it sort of a coincidence that 911 also marks a day that will live in infamy?

I have thought about this many times @AndroidDev

seems like an unfortunate coincidence

user136984
4:55 PM
I'm going to start devouring green tea cake soon! >:D

But 911 has a special property that it's still easy to remember but you can't dial it accidentally
on old phones
like, really old telephones

@grooveplex Yeah, sorta interesting.

@grooveplex yeah, well on the old cell phones they didn't think it through . . . my phone would dial 911 for some stupid reason, and i got 911 call me back like twice or something . . . i really hated it

@AndroidDev don't think it was a coincidence
Much like the 26 Nov attacks on Mumbai, big terrorist attacks pick a date to symbolize something.

@jokerdino <sigh>

Q: Machine boots straight to Windows have installing 16.04.1 along-side it

MehdiI installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 alongside Windows 10 but I don't see it when I turn on my laptop and it directly goes to Windows. What should I do?

user136984
He has no idea what anything is...

@ParanoidPanda Yep.
Well that was interesting....
AU chat wouldn't let me in.
I had to log out and back in twice.

anyone tried running python script on android ?
and hello

Q: Is there a way to run Python on Android?

e-satisWe are working on an S60 version and this platform has a nice Python API. However, there is nothing official about Python on Android, but since Jython exists, is there a way to let the snake and the robot work together?

5:15 PM
@CodeX I have QPython app installed there in case i need to sketch up something on my phone

I don't see any EFI partitions in disk management so I think it's Legacy BIOS. — Mehdi 13 mins ago

@AndroidDev thanks

Just because he doesn't know the Linux terms doesn't mean he isn't smart :)

@Serg I see

5:17 PM
@Seth Indeed.
I'm surprised he knew to look there.

I just discovered today that I can control my phone leds etc by altering files on android

that seems to be a funny video

@Seth Link's broken:
Did you install Linux after Windows, or vice versa? If the former, there should be a screen like this that appears first, letting you choose what to boot (that's GRUB btw). If it was the latter you will need to follow the steps outlined in this question: askubuntu.com/questions/88384/…Seth ♦ 1 min ago

grr. duckduckgo does that to you.

5:19 PM
(The picture link)

works for me though. Odd.

@AndroidDev yeah I know that app .. it doesnt disable leds while charging which I wanted

@Seth I get a 403.
@Seth

better?

@Seth 403 too

5:20 PM
in BIOS he needs to enable Legacy I guess

yes works now @Seth

great.

@Seth Yes.

that windows issue happens to me when I install Ubuntu enabling legacy boot in bios .. I can still use Ubuntu pressing F12 - boot menu

5:35 PM
@CodeX misread that as Live LG-Vista . . . ii thought that was some windows vista party or something

@Serg xD
upcoming party is windows 10 anniversary update on 2nd August I think

Isn't the anniversary update already out?
Oh - heh. I guess not.

No I think the one in news is on beta version
finally extensions can be installed in Edge browser
I am starting to like kubuntu

5:50 PM
@CodeX and Cortana can't be turned off.

of course she can be turned off.
every Cortana can be stopped with a hammer.
and an axe.
or both

@Seth you disable your microphone when you dont use it
She is adorable why would you want to turn her off xD

@Rinzwind or via wiping the disk and installing Ubuntu :D

the only one who can tell me a joke and sing songs

@Serg naah too risky. you might have a virus on the system level >:-D

5:55 PM
Anyone familiar with circuit design?

Em . . . sort of . . .

(says electrical engineering major student who failed most of his classes )

What component do I need to use there?
(Where I have the red circles.)

power socket ?

5:56 PM
Yes.
The hot wire needs to connect to eight relays.
So I've got a single wire coming from the socket and I need to split it into eight wires.
...safely :D

Em . . . each red cirle is single node, you could just solder them together . . . .

Is that... safe?

well you could add fuses for protection, because if one circuit fails, the other one will get more current
but theoretically it's safe
@NathanOsman what are you making there by the way ?

Let's see if I can find a picture here...

why not just use power extension .. which also has fuse .. and more safe way

6:01 PM
That's incredibly expensive.

@CodeX I think Nathan is trying to make a single unit there.

So there's a Pi and it connects to an 8-channel solid state relay.

@NathanOsman what pokemon did you find at those circles? >:-D

soldering 8 wires ..with 120 volts ..no way safe xD

That's kind of what I thought.

@CodeX if I have to disable my microphone to use an OS in peace, I am not going to use that OS.

@Seth I see

Well, that's better than one that forces you to enable it. I would be wary of such an OS :D

geeeeeeez. he even admits it

Q: bash and env: something: Permission denied

Paola CaptanovskaI am not Ubuntu user. I use openSuse Leap 42.1. But maybe someone here helps me. I had installed Skype long time ago. And it worked all the time. But recently it stopped start and when I run it from terminal I receive an error: env: /usr/lib/skype/skype: Permission denied I had googled this...

@Rinzwind Pikachuuuuuuu!

6:07 PM
@ByteCommander I got 5 of those :=D My Vaporeon I made today has a 10 gym win streak now

shrug

@NathanOsman i'm no expert and in theory power sockets are supposed to have balancing for different loads on the network. But you probably need some sort of fuse there so that you don't overload other circuits with current if one fails

/me does neither have nor plan to have PG.

@Serg I'm not sure I quite understand what would get overloaded...

@Rinzwind has an account on U&L but didn't post there -.-

6:10 PM
And in case it helps, the load on the circuit is going to be quite minimal - less than 400 mA.

@ByteCommander Ingress is cooler IMO; although I play neither.

@Seth Agreed.

@ByteCommander I can tell you the my friends dog never ever in its life has walked as much as the past 3 weeks. Her boys 13 and 15 have not seen the inside of a forest more than the last 3 weeks.

Although I play Ingress :D

I don't think it will overload .. unless he uses heater ..ac..iron .or any other .heavy power consuming appliances

6:10 PM
I'm connecting LED tree lights.

@Seth never heard of that

WHY

@NathanOsman you can't overload those can you>?

Literally everyone I hear talk about Pokemon Go has no idea what Ingress is..
What a shame.

@Seth I stopped asking that >:=D

6:11 PM
@Rinzwind did they almost get shot yet or walk down a cliff or into a tree etc?

@Rinzwind They are (1) a resistive load and (2) draw very little current.

you can use a thinner wire then

@ByteCommander ingress.com

it will be easy to solder too

literally around years before PG.

6:11 PM
@ByteCommander Holland? CLIFFS? you really think we have cliffs?

each relay has max current

@Seth I am equally puzzled.

@Seth the used the same stops from ingress in PG ;-)

I know xD

@Serg Right - the lights are well under that limit.
Well under.

6:12 PM
AFK

@Seth I do I do I do! :=) you it less everyone -/- 1 at leas
+t

@Rinzwind Oh, right... xD sed 's/down a cliff/into a pond/'

@Seth I can't wait until I try to capture a portal, someone says "playing PGO?" and I say "nope" but continue to stare at my phone and press buttons.

@NathanOsman YASSSSS

@ByteCommander I saw someone run into a tree on a square where the square had 2 trees :P

6:13 PM
There's far more teamwork in Ingress. And, y'know, actual strategy.

Once I get a phone with more storage space I will probably install it.
Sounds like a fun day to spend in a big city.

Oh it is. But bring a battery pack.
Running a 3D-accelerated game with high-precision GPS and the screen on continuously doesn't exactly do wonders for the battery.

@NathanOsman turn of AR and my phone lasts for 6 hours

Hey, there's a live Ingress even happening 1 town over from me next week.

It is crazy hot here.

6:17 PM
Although I'm going to be gone that day.

my town is 55k people. But due to a outlet center we attract 4.5m Germans and about 1m Chinese(yes. actually chinese that FLY over to the Netherlands) so it is a massive pokemon area

@NathanOsman It was 30.5 here yesterday.

@NathanOsman it is now 20:15 here and 30 degrees celcius

@Rinzwind Sounds like you have some nice scenery there though.
@Rinzwind Feels like 40 here.

@NathanOsman most of those chinese girls look cute >:-D

6:18 PM
@Rinzwind ಠ_ಠ

lol
ok back on topic :=)

@NathanOsman kidding of course

I know that.
I'm feeling:

that's like Easter E.T. Alien.

@Rinzwind 23°C here ^_^

6:24 PM
@ByteCommander nice

yeah it is dropping quickly here too :) (sun is now on my window so it is a bit hot)
is that not a bit too ... ehm how do you call it?

Q: Why my spam flag has been decilined?

Pilot6I flagged this answer. For those who can't read the deleted answer I am posting it here I prefer to use virtual environments to install Ubuntu. You can use Vagrant or Docker. Both are excellent options. A 1 rep user posted two links to non-free services. The post is not an answer to the qu...

because it's not spam?

@Rinzwind desperate?

yes that's the one I was searching for :D

6:32 PM
Vagrant and Ubuntu . . . herp derp . . . I mean, Vagrant and Docker

@NathanOsman DOCKAAAAAAR :D

what a gif

Hello Everybody! :)

question! is this off topic: askubuntu.com/questions/764936/…
if so! then this off topic too? askubuntu.com/questions/804612/…

6:41 PM
Grr. It's so annoying when people complain about sellers in Amazon reviews, but no one actually says who they bought it from!

@Seth aren't you supposed to be able to read their minds? ;)

LOL poor Seth :D Yeah I so hate that too

@edwinksl that's unlocked at 500k reputation :P

are you saying jon skeet can read minds???!!!

no he can't. He posted BEFORE you think about askign a question

6:46 PM
so basically chuck norris
@Rinzwind i think both questions are better suited to SO imho

7:19 PM
Unsure if this unprofessional and joke question is on topic here askubuntu.com/q/804610/530811

@grooveplex that's an awesome question imho

The question itself is good, yes
But still I don't think this is appropriate in a professional office business meeting

i have been one of those who didn't know a particular screen was a touchscreen and i did f*** things up ;)

Disable the touch screen, okay. Make it say 'poke me', in a professional setting, not okay.

@Serg classic "removed some fluff" ;D

7:22 PM
What else to say?

@edwinksl not my edit , i just improved someone else's but didn't bother to remove their comment

well, I think it's totally appropriate ^_^
but more importantly I think whether we think what that person wants to do is appropriate or not is totally irrelevant. It's about Ubuntu as defined in help centre...
Except... 15.04??

That was probably mine
But I don't know what else to say
It's better than the recommended 'improved formatting' IMO and I got this from @DavidFoerster

@grooveplex yeah i just saw it was your edit which serg then improved; i didn't scroll down enough xD
@Zanna 15.04 is totally irrelevant to the question though. we may want to remove it in case people flag this as EOL

And I think 'removed fluff(y)' (like an ubunntu :p) sounds better than 'removed x characters in body' and 'improved grammar'

7:27 PM
yeah I agree that it is irrelevant, but we should probably tell them to update haha

sounds a little like a particular OS that we love to hate ;D

Brevity is the soul of wit . . . askubuntu.com/a/804629/295286

i saw
was going to say that is the eziest rep of your life

hmm, converting distutils to setuptools. This will be interesting.
@Serg YAS I WAS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO DO THAT

i recall disutils is basically deprecated?

7:32 PM
@edwinksl basically.

@Serg IMHO this is really a comment.

dat OP's username though

updating the last PC in the house to Windows 10 too. And then installing Linux for my sister :D
At least Windows 10 has 1 good thing about it. It makes people switch to Linux :D
@NathanOsman blank screen?

@grooveplex was going to post it as comment but the i was like . . . this is the only possible solution. Ain't nobody is going to recompile unity just to add that one feature to it . . .i don't know other way anyway

7:35 PM
@Seth You mustn't have your speakers on :D

they're on..

Hrm... it's supposed to verbally tell you what browser you're using.

yeah, I read the source.
Maybe my UA isn't as expected.

It will still use "your browser".
So you must have the speech synthesis API disabled or unavailable.
Are you using Chromium?

Oh that is more likely.
Also, JS Fiddle has come a ways since I last used it o_O
@NathanOsman ya

7:37 PM
Maybe they only enabled it in Chrome then.

@NathanOsman i tried it on chrome and it said something that i didn't understand xD

@grooveplex it's an answer, not a comment... there's a post on meta "what do I do if a comment is sufficient to answer a question" (the question links to a post where the OP is like "I do this and the terminal says 'permission denied' what do I do??") and the answer is just answer the question

hrm, is there a more direct way to install atom than through webupd8? They don't update it very fast.

@Seth i do it manually with the deb at github.com/atom/atom/releases
i also use the beta channel which i think webupd8 doesn't put on its PPA, so i am basically on my own

huh, does snap find fail with connection refused for anyone else?

7:43 PM
@Seth nope, werks for meh

huh.

works for me too

me too joins the chorus

I wonder what is broken for me.
grr

Q: kvm use entire disk device

user2499241Is it possible when creating a virtual machine with virt-install to specify the --disk flag with something like /dev/sdc (assuming a hard drive on my host is at that location) instead of mapping it to a .img file? currently my command looks like: sudo virt-install --name ubuntu-test \ --ram 512...

Speaking of snaps , does anyone here make snap packages ? I wonder if I could create snap package for my indicators

huh, reinstalling snapd fixed it.
yay, an atom snap.

oh but it's on the beta channel..
@Rinzwind not my snap unfortunately :(
snappy still hates me.

better than the omega channel :+

you need to love snappy for it to love you

that's also y I no arch

never used atom Serg?!

7:49 PM
nope

pretty sure serg uses ed

:O

vim actually

@Serg you should probably use the webupd8 PPA instead.
GitHub says the atom snap doesn't work well.

Wait a second, what's the difference between snap and snappy ?

7:50 PM
Because snappy is only half baked.
@Serg snappy is the colloquial term for Ubuntu Core, snap is the .snap package.
but now people kinda use snappy for both..

that could be an AU question for confused peeps like me

@Serg Oh that's not bad.

em . . . weird, very weird . . . i sudo apt-get install snappy , and my snap is gone now
$ snap
/bin/mksh: snap: not found

snapd is what you're looking for.

@edwinksl I'll join you in that confused club

7:53 PM
snappy --help
Usage:
  snappy [OPTION...] <media file> - Play movie files

niceee always good to find fellow confused people

/facepalm . . . .what did i install ???

lol serg wrong package
Package snappy

xenial (video): Powerful media player with a minimalistic interface [universe]

@Serg noob! D:

@Rinzwind - Huh?
Version 1.0.85 is what it says in 'About' is all I can tell you — Lisa Jayne Pollard 2 hours ago
Old Ubuntu version confirmed!

7:54 PM
sorry? @AndroidDev whats with that?

@Rinzwind Read the comments

on it
geez wtf :D

@Rinzwind I know, right?
@Rinzwind - Do you have any explanation?
That isn't even a version of Ubuntu....
The first was 4.10

i have no clue what software that version number is for

@edwinksl Oh well.

7:57 PM
not even for windows ;-)
could be bluetooth version

googling "bluetooth 1.0.85" gives me trash
